Who has the advantage?

UTAH vs. SJSU

QUARTERBACKUTAH!Starter Jordan Wynn has missed the past two games with a sprained thumb on his throwing hand that he injured in the !rst half of the opening game against Pitt. Wynn !nished the game and put up impressive numbers, throwing for 283 yards and three touchdowns against a highly rated Panther defense. In Wynn’s absence, the Utes have gone 2-0 with Terrance Cain leading the way. Cain’s consistent play—six touchdowns, no turnovers and a 76.7 completion percent-age—and a strong running game have eased the loss of Wynn.Wynn is listed as day-to-day heading into Saturday’s game. He started throwing this week in practice for the !rst time since the injury.

SAN JOSE STATE!Senior signal caller Jordan La Secla has completed 68 percent of his throws (51-75) and has two touchdowns and two interceptions. At home against Southern Utah last week, La Secla completed back-to-back passes in the last two minutes of the game for 12 and 26 yards to set up the winning score. La Secla is pass-ing for an average of 168.7 yards per game. Backup Matt Faulkner has played at least one series of every game so far in 2010, with all but one coming in the !rst half.

RUNNING BACKSUTAH!Thanks to mass substitutions and a "eet-footed thrower, it was a quarterback and not Eddie Wide or Matt Asiata who led the Utes in rushing against New Mexico. Third-string QB Gri# Robles rushed for 64 yards in the game to a combined 57 yards by the duo. On the year, Wide has rushed for 149 yards and two scores on 32 attempts to Asiata’s 136 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries. Both backs fumbled last week against the Lobos, a recurring issue for the Utes so far in 2010. Wide’s fumble on the opening drive was recovered by the defense. Asiata’s fumble came in the red zone but was recovered by tight end Brad Cli#ord, leading to Asiata’s !rst score of the year two plays later.

SAN JOSE STATE!Brandon Rutley is the leading rush-er, with 130 yards on 36 carries. His only touchdown of the year came against Southern Utah. Spellback Lamon Mudrow scored the game-winner against Southern Utah and has 14 rushes for 42 yards—second best on the team. As a team, the Spartans are averaging 67 yards per game on the rush.

EDGE: UTAH

OFFENSIVE LINEUTAH!Zane Taylor is listed as probable because of a knee injury. If he cannot play, Tevita Stevens will take his place at center and Wal-ter Watts will take Stevens’ spot at right guard. The starting unit on the line still has yet to yield a sack—Gri# Robles was sacked at New Mexico with the second stringers in for the only team sack given up.

SAN JOSE STATE!San Jose State is tied for 27th nationally for fewest sacks—one—given up per game. Against No. 1 Alabama, the Spar-tans’ line gave up just one sack and two against Southern Utah. The San Jose line, however, is fairly inexperienced. Left tackle David Quessenberry, right guard Nicholas Kaspar and freshman center Reuben Hasani—all projected to start Saturday—have only nine combined starts.

EDGE: PUSH

LINEBACKERSUTAH!Gone are the times when this linebacking crew lived in the shadow of Stevenson Sylvester, Kepa Gaison and Mike Wright. To-gether, Chaz Walker, Matt Martinez and Chad Manis are making a case to be considered the best backer trio in the MWC. Walker’s 35 tackles are good for seventh best in college football. Manis had a career game against New Mexico with eight tackles (two TFL).

SAN JOSE STATE!Tiuke Tuipulotu is tied for the team lead in tackles with 20 and had a personal-best nine stops against Alabama. Tuipulotu is tied with fellow backer Vince Buhagiar, who is the !rst freshman to start at linebacker for the Spartans in six years. Buhagiar is the leading freshman tackler in the nation going into this game.

EDGE: UTAH

SPECIAL TEAMSUTAH!After a two-fumble opening game, Shaky Smithson has won MWC Special Teams Player of the Week and National Punt Re-turner of the Week for two consecutive weeks. Smithson returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown in week two against UNLV and scored again on a 73-yard return on New Mexico. His punt return average (26.6) is ranked fourth nationally. Placekicker Joe Phillips has made his past 12 !eld-goal attempts dating back to 2009 and has a 92 !eld-goal percent for his career. Phillips tied a school record when he was eight-of-eight on PATs. Sean Sellwood is ranked third in the MWC in punt average (47.4) and has three 50-plus yard punts.

SAN JOSE STATE!Freshman kicker Harrison Waid is two-of-four on !eld-goal attempts with makes from 31 and 35 yards and misses from 41 and 43. Waid handled all kicking duties until halfway through week two, when Jens Alvernik replaced him at punter. Alvernik has remained at punter and is averaging 31.3 yards per attempt on sev-en punts. As a team, the Spartans have placed four punts inside their opponents’ 20-yard line. Return specialists Brandon Driver and Ronnie Yell both average just more than 21 yards per attempt on kick returns.

EDGE: UTAH

DEFENSIVE LINEUTAH!The 12-man rotation on the Utes’ defensive line is led by captain end Christian Cox, who has 17 tackles (two TFL and one sack). Starting tackles Dave Kruger (10 tackles) and Sealver Siliga (eight tackles) are second and third in tackles on the line. Senior end Der-rick Shelby missed the game against New Mexico because of an ankle injury but will play against the Spartans.

SAN JOSE STATE!Stopping the run has been an issue for San Jose because it gives up an average of 182 yards per game on the ground, which ranks 89th in the FBS. Defensive end Travis Johnson leads the line in tackles with 15. Tackle Anthony Larceval had seven tackles and a pass breakup.

EDGE: UTAH

RECEIVERSUTAH!Second-year starter Jereme Brooks has been Mr. Consis-tent, with 15 catches for 263 yards and four touchdowns through three games. In the Mountain West Conference, Brooks is third in receptions and second in receiving yards per game. DeVonte Christopher caught three passes—one for a touchdown—against New Mexico after a no-catch game the week prior. Christopher is leading the MWC in yards per reception (19.8) and has 11 catches for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Two tight ends—Kendrick Moeai and Dallin Rogers—caught passes in week three, and Rogers’ catch was for six.

SAN JOSE STATE!Jalal Beauchman had his best game of the season against Southern Utah University, collecting 73 yards on !ve catches—three of which came on the game-winning drive. Chandler Jones leads the team in receptions with 20 for 170 yards and a touch-down. Jones became the !rst San Jose freshman in 15 years to gain more than 100 receiving yards when he caught eight passes for 113 yards in week two against Wisconsin. Noel Grigsby is second on the year with 13 for 168 yards.

DEFENSIVE BACKSUTAH!All-American candidate Brandon Burton has lived up to expectations so far. He is second in the MWC with three pass break-ups and 14 for his career. Across from Burton, corner Lamar Chapman earned MWC Defensive Player of the Week against New Mexico. Chap-man led the Utes with eight tackles (seven solo) in the game and a sack. On the year, safety Brian Blechen has 17 tackles, two pass break-ups and an interception.

SAN JOSE STATE!Cornerbacks Peyton Thompson and Bene Benwikere each have one interception on the year. Thompson’s four pass breakups tie him with sophomore starting corner Ronnie Yell for the team lead, and his 13 tackles are third best. All four of Yell’s pass breakups came against Southern Utah, tying San Jose’s single-game record.

Senior forward Lauren Hair takes a shot on goal during the first half. The women’s soccer team beat Utah State 2-1 Thursday night.
