MUSS sign-up crashes server
Conference aims to fight Middle East’s rising cancer rates
Chile study-abroad trip goes ahead
The MUSS New Plan! The alphabetical group A-H will now register on
Sat, March 6th at noon. The groups I-R will register Thurs, March 4th at
noon and S-Z will register Fri, March 5th at noon. Seating will still be de-
termined on how close to noon you register. We apologize for this inconve-
nience but we want to be certain that the server will work so we will give the
IT department one more day to fix the problem.
Brandon Brown will one day be enough? the muss had a GD
year to get the problem fixed
Dan Gerszewski Last year the servers were bogged down for
hours so you think they would have prepared better for this given a
whole year... I’m pretty sure the same thing is going to happen tomorrow.
Faris Bin Khaled YEAH THANKS MUSS!! PLAN??!! this blows
I was waiting for an hour in front of the countdown screen you guys
should’ve seen it coming! it’s not a plan it’s more like a server down!
Corey Wright haha yeah i bet it will crash tomorrow too. What is the
plan for that? There is definitely other solutions you could have done. Work with IT to rent more servers, outsource the servers to someone
with more capacity for signup day, etc.
Riley G. Devereaux thanks for the update, I hope this works, I
don’t want to be skipping a ski day for nothing...
Rob Totten is laughing at everyone complaining about MUSS registra-
tion like it was the MUSS’s fault. In case you didn’t know it, no one from
the MUSS manages a UNIVERSITY website, turns out it the University
manages the University website, if you have complaints, direct them to the
University IT department.
IT dept installed, tested new server; registration to resume

Law must be upheld for in-state tuition
G U E S T C O L U M N
“As Utah law stands now, we are subsidizing [illegal immigrants’] education and preparing them for jobs they legally cannot hold.”
“Legislature could expand cut to 22%”
(Michael McFall, March 3, 2010) News
Karren Nicholsposted 3.3.10 @ 11:59 A.M.How about they add a “sin tax” to fast food, junk food, coke products, and anything else that is deemed bad for a persons helath and use it for funding public and higher educa-tion. ... the result would be more money for education and less money spent on health care due to obesity and other health related problems that are the result of poor diet.
www.dailyutahchronicle.com
the differenceposted 3.3.10 @ 11:06 A.M.Your arguments are full of fallacy. Regardless of the lawmakers intentions, the fact remains that smoking cannot be compared to other “sins.” Second hand smoke impacts you without you having a say in the manner. Furthermore, smoking has negative impacts for the smoker themselves, and since many smokers have health problems later on, chances are the gov-ernment is paying for some of those costs. It stands to reason to tax something like smoking
Bradposted 3.3.10 @ 2:38 P.M.@Robert P, @Cam, and @The difference: All of what you said may be true, I agree with much of it. But the author makes a good point that taxing them to death isn’t going to stop them from smoking. I’ve never heard from a single person who was fortunate enough to kick the habit because the price got to high. Therefore it doesn’t make very much sense to say they deserve the tax because of X,Y,Z; when X,Y,Z aren’t going to be solved by the tax. The au-thor does give an alternate positive way of helping people kick the addiction, even if it doesn’t solve our tax woes.At least if you’re going to argue, make the one rea-sonable point that higher tobacco costs may dis-courage teens from getting started to begin with.
Colorado Robposted 3.3.10 @ 6:35 P.M.Heads up folks - taxing tobacco products really has nothing to do with Utah, Mormons, or religion in gen-eral. Someone nailed it - it’s not a sin tax, it’s a stupid tax. Living in Utah often means you see things through an LDS/NonLDS window. It ain’t always the case.
Camposted 3.3.10 @ 11:01 A.M.Other “sins” don’t make me choke when I’m just walking outside. They don’t make me have to buy a $200 air filter to keep MY apartment clean while my neighbors indulge themselves. And you don’t find garbage left over from them everywhere you look. I’m having a hard time mustering up much in the way of sympathy here.
Art Broomposted 3.3.10 @ 1:57 P.M.Samsonite, where do you propose to fund this utopian state? With the possible excep-tion of Wyoming (do you really want to live in Laramie?), I can’t think of many states that aren’t worse off than Utah. At least here you have natural beauty unparalleled throughout most of the US.
Samsoniteposted 3.3.10 @ 11:59 A.M.My wife and I are both educators. We’ve been considering it for a while, but if this cut happens, it will very seriously be time to move to another state. One that does more than just talk about the importance of educa-tion while continually finding ways to underfund it.

NOTICE OF PROPOSED TUITION INCREASE
The University of Utah is proposing to increase student tuition, beginning Summer Term 2010. The proposed increase would consist of a first-tier increase as mandated by the Utah State Board of Regents and a second-tier increase as proposed by the University. The University is proposing a second-tier increase in the range of 7.5% to 9.5%. At this time, the likely increase in second-tier tuition would be approximately $185 per semester for a resident undergraduate student taking an average load (12 credits). Actions taken by the Legislature subsequent to the publication of this announcement may make it possible to address the proposed total increase in tuition (first plus second tier) at the meeting identified below. The University Administration will explain the reasons for the proposed second-tier increase, address the total increase in tuition to the extent possible, discuss expectations for allocating the increased revenue and field comments regarding the increases at this public meeting to be held:
Wednesday, March 17, 2010, from 2 - 3 PMGould Auditorium, Marriott LibraryAll concerned students and citizens are invited to the public hearing on the proposed increase.
