Philosophy The historic Spanish variety, Tempranillo has found a successful home in the vineyards of Paso Robles. Like its home in the Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions of Spain, Paso Robles offers hot summer days, cool nights and little rainfall. Our 2017 Tempranillo tempts you with beautifully layered fruit, exotic spice highlights, and a long complex finish. It never fails to amaze with its affinity toward a wide variety of foods. ¡Que aproveche! Vintage Notes The 2017 vintage started with a cold, wet winter that replenished the dry soils throughout Paso Robles after five years of drought. Warmer weather in March encouraged a slightly early bud break late in the month and a few well-spaced showers added to the season’s precipitation totals. May was warm and with the generous moisture in the soils, heavy vegetative growth on the vines prompted careful and early canopy management to balance vine development for the coming season. Things turned very hot in June and July with record breaking heat that caused an early veraison toward late July. The hot weather continued throughout August pushing ripeness levels and causing some concern with early ripening varieties. Things cooled off nicely early in September, balancing maturity and ripeness levels by slowing things down a bit and normalizing our harvest which ended early in November, a bit later than normal. Vinification Fermentation: Stainless steel closed top tank with UV43 yeast, twice daily pump overs. Maturation: Barrel aged for 22 months in 100% French oak (44% new) Tasting Notes by Jim Gerakaris, CWE - JUSTIN Winery Sommelier Appearance: Dark ruby purple core lighter at the rim. Moderate-plus viscosity with light staining on the glass. Aroma: Moderate intensity aromas of muted strawberry and cherry fruit leather with vanilla, dried potpourri, leather and a little exotic sandalwood. Palate: Dry, moderate-plus bodied with red and black fruit character like the wine’s aromas, mixed with oak and barrel spice on the entry. The mid-palate shows sustained fruit with dusty leather, dried flowers and firm tannins that bundle everything together into a long, clean finish accented with a little olive and exotic wood notes. The 2017 Reserve Tempranillo is versatile wine that offers a great alternative when you are looking for something different in a red wine. With its exotic aromas and flavors, it pairs well with Mediterranean and middle eastern cuisines like a Moroccan lamb or tagine, or a slowly roasted pork roast seasoned with herbs and a little garlic served with roasted potatoes.
