About Hebron
Hebron, "The Brick City", has a population of roughly 700 and growing.
We are located in the center of Southwestern North Dakota. North Dakota is in an economic boom. We are the nations number one producer of flax, canola, dry peas, certain wheat, all dry beans, sunflowers, barley, honey, and light sweet crude oil.
Hebron's history goes back more than 125 years. We have a modern brick factory that has been producing top quality brick since 1904. Many of the hard working farming and ranching families have been here for more then 100 years. Yet we have an easy going atmosphere. It's not uncommon for two vehicles to stop in the middle of the street to talk a spell.
We have a post office, movie theater with a modern projection system, restaurants, credit union, bank, gas stations, auto repair shops, and a grocery store with bakery that will deliver groceries to you each Friday during the winter monthes.
We also have a swimming pool, an outstanding library, K-12 school, campground/motel, city parks with lighted areas, a nice museum, and a weekly newspaper (The Hebron Herald).
All this in a rural setting two miles off I-94 exit 97.Hebron is surrounded by National and State Parks, populated by mostly older homes, connected by fiber optic cable and
DSL. It's just 30 minutes to Dickinson and electricity costs 9.56 cents a kilo-watt.
History of Hebron
The first settlers of Hebron arrived by rail in 1885 when the Northern Pacific Railroad deposited German immigrants from Chi-cago, a group under the auspices of the colonization and encourage-ment of the Evangelical Synod of North America. Two young Ger-man adventurers, Ferdinand Leutz and Charles Krauth, who were instrumental in creating what would become Hebron, preceded this first colony. Before the time of railroads, this region was a trackless wilderness of grass and treeless prairie inhabited by Dacotah, Ari-kara, and Mandan tribes and the occasional trader or explorer. The name, Hebron, was a reference to the Biblical vale of Hebron in Pal-estine and in translation means “fellowship.” By 1910, all the evi-dence of a thriving community prevailed with a public school, three churches, elevators, mercantile establishments, a flourmill, creamery and a brick factory. Today, Hebron Brick Co., Inc. remains an anchor business and bricks and agriculture are the primary economic indi-cators. While the population peaked to approximately 1,300 in the 1950’s, current estimate is about 700 residents. Listed on the Na-tional Register of Historic Places, St. John Church, chartered in 1885, played an important role in establishing the Hebron communi-ty.
Community Events
Hebron hosts a number of events each year.
Generally the first weekend in July the HBC (Hebron Business Club) sponsors Wa-termelon Days which features free watermelon for the community as well as turtle

The Fall Festival is generally held the second weekend in September and is fun for the entire family. The festival usually includes a parade, quilt show, farmers market, FFA auction, inflatables for the kids, cow
drop, games for the children, tuff trucks, and many food vendors. A street dance usually occurs Saturday night featuring one our local musical talents. The weekend ends with a roping for cancer event at the rodeo grounds.

Community Fort Sauerkraut Ft. Sauerkraut was built in in November 1892. Hebron was founded in 1885 by two German men who represented Germans from Russia...Charles Krautz and Fernandine Leutz. The city grew slowly over the next few years bring-ing in many immigrants from Russia. The growth was also made possible by the end of the Dakota Sioux's rebellion end due to being forced to reservations...the Sioux wanted no part of the reservations...
The Old Red Trail is a scenic byway which travels right through our town. The mission of the Old Red Trail Committee is for recreational, historical and eco-nomic revitalization in the communities along Highway 10 from Mandan to Dickinson, ND, by creating awareness of the Old Red Trail as an alternative to Interstate travel in western North Dakota.
It is a great way to stop and visit all that small town North Dakota has to offer.
An event that the Old Red Trail Committee sponsors is a 100 mile rummage sale which encourages all communities along the route to participate. This is held 1st Sat. in June and brings many visitors. It is a great way to clean out the house or get out and tour Old Ten. You can find out more information on Old Red Ten by visiting http://www.oldredoldten.com/
Custer had died about 20 years previous and very few uprisings happened however, in November 1892 rumor spread that a large number of Dakota Sioux had broken out of the reservation and was heading their way up to cause mischief...this sent immigrants into a panic and quickly decided to build a fort to pro-tect themselves and their community...due to the lack of trees and the inability to order lumber ahead of time they used the materials they had on had….. Sod.
The Fort was only occupied about two to three weeks...the information received proved to be false and the townspeople returned to normal life...the original fort stood for a time and then either fell down or was destroyed.
How Fort Sauerkraut received its name is not known for sure but it has been passed thru the years that kegs that had held sauerkraut were used in the construction of the fort and Another version says that dur-ing construction, one settler, not accustomed to manual labor, remarked “Die arbeit kommt so sauer” – (“The work comes so sour”).
In September, 2004, the Hebron Business Club, assisted by a group of hardworking local volunteers, re-constructed the fort on the original site. The portion reconstructed depicts the inner sod shelter of sod walls with railroad ties for a roof.
