Dear Friends,

We cannot thank you enough…

When times were difficult this year, you stepped up to assist your neighbors in need. Your support helped the Community Chest allocate more funds than ever before -- $557,731 to 40 local agencies, programs and Concord-Carlisle public schools. And we could not have done it without you. Your donations, your sponsorships and your valuable time helped us build and sustain our community.

As we pass the Community Chest baton from last year’s president to the next, from Beth Knauss to Valerie Kolligian Thayer, we want to share with you the many ways you enriched our efforts:

Beginning with our annual appeal in October, we raised over $625,000 through donations, sponsorships and events. We are grateful for so many new and sustaining donors.

Next, our online auction in March featured over 100 terrific prizes, most of which were donated by generous local businesses. On its heels, the biennial spring gala in April attracted 200 guests who enjoyed celebrating the end of a long winter. Amidst fresh flowers, elegant food, cocktails and an exciting raffle, patrons helped us raise more than $40,000.

Finally, our annual Challenge event attracted teams from several local agencies, businesses and nearby towns for a fun relay race. With the Old Manse and the Concord River as a backdrop, more than 200 participants and volunteers gathered to cheer on teams of all abilities.

Culminating the Chest’s 63rd year, agency awards were given at our annual Celebrate Giving event on June 15th to help sustain and expand local services. We would like to thank the allocations volunteers who helped us determine the best way to distribute annual campaign funds to so many deserving agencies.

As you can see, our success hinges on the many volunteers and donors who enable the Chest’s mission. We hope you will continue to give your time, talent and treasure to the Community Chest and encourage your friends to join in too. With a single contribution, you are supporting nearly 40 different programs and services, and building community right here where you live and work.

With sincere appreciation,

get to know us, get involved and make a difference!

Did you know?

The Concord-Carlisle Com-munity Chest was founded in 1947 and has spent the last 63 years raising money and then

distributing it to human service organiza-tions. The original intent was actually to raise money in Concord and then send those funds to the Boston Red Feather Society. It quickly became clear that need was right here in our own towns and with nonprofits establishing rapidly, the dona-tions were distributed locally.

Not only is the Community Chest the biggest provider of funding to many of these 35 organizations but we also go way beyond the scope of just providing finan-cial assistance. We spend a lot of time communicating with our organizations, providing seminars, collaborating, and our allocations teams made up of all volunteers are available to assist with valuable best practices.

Being on the front lines with local sup-port allows the Community Chest to react quickly to a crisis or unmet need, we can convene all the significant stake holders to get a problem solved and offer professional advice to all types of organizations and individuals seeking support. This is where some of our biggest impact can be. In the last two years we have started three Field Of Interest Funds that go beyond our usual yearly funding and in to different areas, such as the environment and the arts. All of this is done with part-time staff and a dedicated group of volunteers.

We rarely look beyond what we know but there is so much happening right here in Concord and Carlisle. Whether it is looking at the amazing individuals and organiza-tions established here and working hard to solve and support need, or the many families and individuals who need our help today. Get to know us, get involved and make a difference!

Astrid Williams, Executive Director

As we approach the next fiscal year, we will be unveiling a new

Community Chest video illuminating the excellent work being

done by the agencies we help support. These human services address

issues at every stage of life and across a wide spectrum of needs

right here in Concord and Carlisle. You will be able to view our new

video by visiting our website at www.cccommunitychest.org.

Chief Wetherbee’s Long Reach

We broke the barrier

between civilian groups

and police to address

domestic violence,

Many residents know that Concord police chief Len Wetherbee served the

community for 33 years. He joined the force from the police academy, rising through the ranks to become chief of police in 1993. His retirement on January 29, 2010 coincided with his 55th birthday when he moved to New Hampshire to “enjoy all things outside.”

But what may not be as well known to the community is Chief Wetherbee’s integral role in establishing two critical human service agencies: Domestic Violence Services Network and Communities for Restorative Justice. In an interview just before his retirement, Chief Wetherbee shared his positive experiences working with these local programs.

Domestic Violence Prevention

In 1991, Chief Wetherbee attended an FBI academy in Phoenix, Arizona where he learned about a new type of victim advocate program where police and community advocates worked together to prevent domestic abuse. With

grants from the Community Chest and the Federal government, a domestic violence prevention program was launched in Concord. “We broke the barrier between civilian

groups and police to address domestic violence,” said Chief Wetherbee.

When Federal funds dried up, the Network for Women’s Lives stepped in to help reshape the program while the Community Chest continued to provide critical funding. Today, that program is called Domestic Violence Services Network led by Jacquelin Apsler. It has grown to encompass ten surrounding

towns as well as Hanscom Air Force Base. According to Chief Wetherbee, “Nothing is stronger than working together – advocates and police – in preventing abuse.”

Restorative Justice

Twelve years ago in Concord, a community forum was presented on the concept of a community-police partnership offering a “circle” process of justice to those affected by crime. Local response was tremendous with 230 people in attendance. Chief Wetherbee and community advocates Jean Bell and Joan Turner launched the first restorative circle in 2000 in Concord. Carlisle soon joined the process and a community-wide program was created with funding from the Community Chest.

Today, nine towns participate in C4RJ, bolstered by more than 100 volunteers. “This is the most important program I’ve been involved in during my 33

years here,” said Chief Wetherbee. “I wish every resident could see one circle in action… it’s phenomenal.”

Reflecting on his 33-year career on the police force, Len Wetherbee said he “feels good about what I’ve done because of who I’ve done it with in Concord. I feel really good about my retirement knowing these critical programs will continue.”

I wish every

With support like that of the Chest,

this ancient world-wide practice

of dealing with conflict and harm

has found firm footing here in our

Abundant Agency Support

Human services abound in Con-cord and Carlisle, supporting resi-dents of all ages and stages of life.

Whether addressing hunger, mental health, aging or domestic violence, the Community Chest funds a spectrum of local need while offering collaboration and education to member agencies.

This year, the Chest will provide $557,731 to 40 local agencies, programs and Con-cord-Carlisle public schools. An invalu-able volunteer committee comprised of 32 residents reviewed applications for funding last spring, conducted site visits and made financial recommendations to the Chest. Our board of directors voted on final fund-

ing and awards were presented to agencies in June at our annual Celebrate Giving meeting.

From young to old, Chest-supported hu-man service programs help contribute to the well-being of every age. For example, Carlisle’s Council on Aging offers many programs to keep seniors socially engaged and healthy by offering exercise classes, theater trips, cultural programs, podiatry clinics, congregate luncheons and inter-generational programs. The COA is led by (new) executive director Debi Siriani and outreach coordinator Angela Smith to meet the needs of more than 1100 seniors who comprise 20% of Carlisle’s population.

“We have many opportunities for seniors to dine together and socialize - congregate lunches at three local churches, as well as men’s breakfasts and women’s breakfasts. And we are adding a ‘spa day’ and lunch at Nashoba Valley Technical High School this fall,” said Siriani.

You help us serve seniors who need us as a social service agency, as well as those seniors who are looking for educational and cultural activities to enrich their lives.

Debi Siriani, Director, Carlisle COA”

At the other end of the age cycle, elementary-aged children ben-efit from the Chest’s backing of

the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) program, whose government funding was drastically re-duced. S.A.F.E. is administered by the Concord Fire Department and is designed to pres-ent a comprehen-sive public fire and life safety program to public school students. Blocks of education are given by firefighter Sean Murphy.

“Our goal is to effect a change in behavior, enabling students to avoid dangerous fire

and life safety situations. If the situation is unavoidable, we teach students how to react to turn the situation into a more positive outcome and minimize danger and injury.” Chest funds are used to purchase

all program materi-als that reinforce the lesson plans deliv-ered in the schools.

Even through the ef-fects of a difficult lo-cal economy, human service agencies and programs continue to positively impact

hundreds of residents. The Community Chest is committed to helping meet the growing demand for local services through the generosity of its donors, sponsors and volunteers.

Our goal is to effect a change in behavior, en-abling students to avoid dangerous fire and life safety situations.

Field of Interest and Cornerstone Funds Fuel Additional needs

Three years ago, the Concord-Carlisle Community Chest established Field of Interest Funds (FOIF)

to give donors the ability to fund projects outside of the Chest’s normal allocations cycle and/or scope of mission. The Community Chest currently has three funds: Community Impact, Environment and Scholarships.

the Cornerstone Fund, established in 1995, provides initial or a maximum of three year support to nonprofit organizations; primarily focused on the youth and elderly.

During the 2010 cycle, each fund received a $5,000 contribution voted on by the board of directors to be disbursed over three years. With additional gifts from generous donors, grants were made to the following

organizations:

From the Community Impact Fund

• $1,450 to the Concord Clergy Laity Group to help individuals

with emergency needs for rent, utilities and other

unforeseen expenses

• $2,500 to Open Table for school supplies and calculators

From the Environment Fund

• $2,500 to The Farm School/Battle Road Farm for curriculum

development

From the Scholarship Fund

• $10,000 to Concord Recreation for METCO summer camp

scholarships

• $1,000 to Emerson Umbrella

• $1,000 to Concord Conservatory of Music

• $1,810 to Minute Man Arc

• $1,000 Community Outreach Coordinator

From the Cornerstone Fund

• $10,000 to Be the Change program at CCHS

I took my daughter to the ER at Em-erson Hospital and she was in a lot of pain and very scared. The nurse pre-sented her with a bag full of goodies that you all made possible. This was such a turnaround for her… you were able to provide us with the perfect mix of items to distract her from her pain, calm her worries and comfort her. Denise Reid, Hudson

Fundraising Springs Forth

Dozens of donors, volunteers and sponsors joined forces with the Chest last spring to help raise funds for local residents in need. An exciting online

auction ran for three weeks in March and April with lots of competitive bidding and many fantastic prizes awarded such as tennis lessons, a wine tasting party, a family pool mem-bership, summer camps and tickets to Wicked. Almost all items were donated by supporters and businesses resulting in more than 100 lucky winners who helped the Chest bring in $26,000.

On the heels of the auction, the Chest hosted its biennial gala on April 10th at 300 Baker Ave in Concord. “Simply a Cock-tail Party” attracted 200 guests for an evening of mingling over hors d’oeuvres served by local teen volunteers, an open bar, beautifully arranged fresh flowers and a fantastic raffle. Lucky participants won items like an L.L. Bean kayak, Red Sox tickets, a vacation in Northeast Harbor Maine, ladies golf at the Concord Country Club, a BMW cruise bike and a painting by local artist Christal Bjork. Guests recon-nected after a long winter while helping to raise $40,000.

Our springtime fundraising events not only support the Chest’s financial goals, but also help attract new volunteers, donors and sponsors. Through the lens of community sup-port, we are always delighted to welcome new friends to the Community Chest.
