Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church is a parish in the Diocese of Knoxville,which was established September 8, 1988.

Bishop Anthony J. O'Canadi was appointed bishop on May 27, 1988, and hewas ordained as our bishop on September 8, 1988.

Bishop Joseph IL Kurtz was appointed as second bishop of the Diocese ofKnoxville on October 26, 1999, and he was ordained on December 8, 1999.

Bishop Richard Sdka, third bishop of the Diocese of Knoxville, was *ordainedon March 19, 2009.

The Diocesan Shield was designed to show the mountains and riven of EastTennessee. The three red crosses represent the Dioceses in Tennessee-Memphis, Nashville and•Knoxville. The gold cross in the center is

from our Pope's shield; the dogwood dominates the hills and valleys ofthis region of Tennessee and the miter worn by bishops is the insignia

• of a diocese of the Catholic Church.

Pope Benedict XVI is the Spiritual Leader of the Catholic Church on earth.• He replaced Pope John Paul II, who had been pope since 1978. •

Holy Water Fonts are at the entrances of the church. Holy water may be used' by all and the water is to remind us of our baptism or our coming

baptism. There are 3 focal points in the SANCTUARY of evely Catholic Church- theALTAR, which represents Christ (and is the reason that We bow); the PULPITwhich proclaims Christ and the PRESUME'S CHAIR which celebrates Christ

As you approach the sanctuary, the CHOIR is to your left, and theBAPTISMAL FONT-where the Sacrament of Baptism is received-is toyour right. We believe that baptism brings us into the Body of Christ,washes away our sins, and calls us to ministry.

The large candle that is by the Baptismal Font is called the PASCHALCANDLE. The Paschal Candle represents Jesus' life, death,resurrection and ascension into heaven. It is also called the EASTERCANDLE and is blessed at the Easter Vigil. JESUS IS THE LIGHTOF THE WORLD!

ALPHA AND OMEGA is usually on the Paschal Candle and depicts JesusALWAYS WAS, IS AND WILL BE, and the incense in the form of a crossrepresents Jesus' 5 wounds.

celebrating mass with us.

The pulpit to the left is where the Wool of God is proclaimed. At theweekend

masses there are 3 Scripture readings—one is usually from the OldTestament; one from the New Testament and one from one of theGospels. A Psalm is sung in response to the first reading. We stand forthe Gospel reading and ask God to always be in our minds, on our lipsand in our hearts.

We now proceed to the SACRISTY which is the room where the vestmentsand sacred vessels are kept

The color of the vestments follow the liturgical calendar—blue for ADVENT,purple for LENT, white for CHRISTMAS AND EASTER. Red is usedwhen the mass being offered is for a martyr. And green is forORDINARY TIME.

Because the altar represents Christ, we bow before entering a pew, or cominginto the sanctuary or when we pass the altar in our duties.

On the right is the BLESSED SACRAMENT CHAPEL where theTABERNACLE—in which a ciborium is placed with the Hosts orBlessed Sacrament to provide Communion for the sick and the dying—is on a marble table. Kneelers and chairs are around the room wherepeople may come at any time to pray. A RED SANCTUARY LAMPburns which indicates that the Blessed Sacrament is in theTabernacle.

CHURCH FURNISHINGSWe gather in our parish church to celebrate the eucharistic liturgy andto praise God. Special areas and furnishings in our churches remind usof Jesus' presence and help us to celebrate the sacraments.

The focal point of every church building is the sanctuary, the areawhere the altar is placed and where the Eucharist is celebrated.

• Although usually found at the front of the church', the sanctuary mayalto be centrally located. It is ordinarily an elevatAd platform.

The altar stands by itself so that ministers can move about it freely.And it'. is so placed that the celebrant faces the people wbile celebratingthe Eucharist. The altar is covered with a linen cloth, arid on it Or nearit are placed candles and a crucifix, though not in such a way as toobscure the celebrant at Mass. VESTMENTS

In the early years of the Church, ministers at the altar wore clothessimilar to those used in ordinary life. But when popular styles changed,the minicters continued to wear this dothibtof the early years, and itbecame liturgical clothing, or vestments. Today bishops, priests, anddeacons continue to wear these special yeshnents at Mass and otherliturgical celebrations. Priests and deacons wear a long white robe calledan alb. Over the alb, around his heck, the priest wears a long strip ofcloth called a stole. (A deacon also wears a stole Ike a sash over theleft shoulder.) Over the alb and stole, the priest wears a large mantle-likevesmaen't called a chasuble. (On solemn Occasions, a deacon wears asimilar vestment called a dalmatic.) The color of the vestments varies

• according to the seasons and feasts of the Aturgical year. The colors andtheir uses are as follows. • ,

Green: A sign of hope, green --en is used during the seasbn of Ordinary

Time.

Purple: A symbol of penance, purple is used during the seasons ofAdvent and Lent.

Red: A symbol of the sacrifice of life out of love for God, red isused on Passion Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost, and thefeasts Of-apostles, evangelists, and martyrs.

Rose: In place of purple, rose may be used-on the Third Sunday

of Advent and the Fourth Sunday of Lent as a sip ofcoming joy during a time of penance.

White: A symbol of joy, purity, and completeness. white is usedfor the seasons of Christmas and Easter, and.the feasts ofOur Lord, the Blessed Virgin, angels, and saints ityho arenot martyrs. In the U.hited States, iitite May be 'Used in

addition to purple and black in Masses for the dead.

The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testinghim. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted a husband towrite a bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote

you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason aman shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they areno longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." In thehouse the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. 2364 The married couple forms "the intimate partnership of life and love established by the Creator andgoverned by his laws; it is rooted in the conjugal covenant, that is, in their irrevocable personal consent."
