Construction and function of a Slewing Ring

Slewing Rings consist of an internal external ring (1) and (2) with an integrated raceway system and optional internal or external gear (3). A functional seal (4)

protects the raceway system on the upper and lower sides. Slewing Rings are designed for grease lubrication which is carried out via grease nipples (5). In Slewing

Rings, the rolling elements (6) carry the loads between the inner and outer ring. The load capacity of the raceway system is determined predominantly by the raceway

design, the hardening depth, and the number and size of the rolling elements. Spacers (7) separate the rolling elements and minimize friction and wear. The rolling

elements are inserted during manufacture through the filling plug hole (8), retained by the filling plug which is then secured by a pin (9). The force is transmitted to

the mounting structure by bolts. Through holes or threaded holes (10) can be provided in the inner and outer rings for these bolts.

INNER AND OUTER RINGS (1) (2)

The bearing consists of an inner and outer ring made of medium carbon steel. Such as: 42CrMo, 50Mn, C45 and so on. Each includes at least one precision raceway

arranged to transfer loads and relative motion from one structure of equipment to the other, the raceways are selectively hardened to the required surface and depth

necessary to transit high stresses imposed during operation of the equipment. In one location around the raceway, there is an unhardened area referred to as the

hardness gap or soft spot. This area is relieved to minimize the ability of the rolling element to apply stress on it. Only one side of each ring is manufactured to be

mated with the supporting structure. One or both rings may include an integral drive mechanism such as gear or sprocket teeth to enable the mechanical advantage

necessary to overcome rotational resistance and provide relative motion through the bearing.

    GEAR (3)

Slewing ring can be supplied with gear teeth as an integral part of either the inner or outer ring. They are typically a standard full depth or stub involute spur gear

    having a 20

pressure angle with provision for backlash and confirming to AGMA Q6 quality. However, where required, modifications of the basic tooth forms, pressure angels, and quality can be provided. For assembly purposes, the maximum point of gear

runout is identified with paint. Alternative methods may be applied upon request.

    SEALS (4)

A seal is included on each side of slewing ring for retention of lubricant and protection of the bearing from dust and small particle contamination. The seals are made

of an elastomer material compatible with most general purpose lubricants having mineral oil and greases using lithium or calcium thickeners. If conditions require

different sealing, NBF can provide details of additional options upon request.

    GREASE NIPPLE (5)

At least one grease nipple is supplied in one of the slewing ring for periodic lubrication of the raceway and internal components. On designs with integral gear teeth,

it is located in non-geared ring. The number supplied typically increases with bearing diameter. More or less may be included upon request.

    ROLLING ELEMENT (6)

Precision rolling elements enable relative rotation and transmit load between the inner and outer rings. Hardened chrome alloy steel balls or rollers may serve as the

rolling elements. They are sized appropriately for the anticipated stresses and closely matched to provide uniform load distribution between the rings and minimize

    rotational resistance.

    SPACERS (7)

Spacers separate the rolling elements and are designed to minimize friction, skidding, and jamming during rotation. These conditions occur as a result of load

distribution and distortion of the mounting structures and bearing rings during operation of the equipment. Spacers are generally made of a plastic material

compatible with typical lubricants and operating environments.

FILLING PLUG AND PIN (8) (9)

The rolling elements in slewing rings may be inserted through a hole drilled radially through the non-geared race and then plugged. The plug is retained mechanically

with a pin to assure proper orientation is maintained.

    MOUNTING HOLES (10)

The ideal hole pattern for attaching both rings of theslewing ringis a full circle of uniformly spaced through holes. It is recognized, however, that the equipment

designer cannot always accommodate this type of arrangement and may require tapped holes and even special bolt patterns in one or both rings for assembly and

    maintenance reasons.

Installation and maintenance instructions for slewing ring.Introduction of slewing ring

According to JB/T2300-1999 and JG/T66-1999 standard in China, our company brings in the advanced technology in home and abroad. We

can design and produce all kinds of slewing rings from diameter 90mm to 10000mm.We can also produce the non-standard slewing ring

according to the customers special requirements.

With the development of special design and manufacture, the available range of slewing rings is increasing. The slewing rings are main

used in cranes (truck cranes, tower crane, marine cranes and marine operating cranes), construction machinery (excavators, loading machines,

stetch wrapping machines and so on), transport machinery, material processing machinery, metallurgical machinery, foodstuff processing

machinery, military and space equipments (tanks, anti-aircrafts, missile launchers, radars, satellites ground-based receivers and so on), medical

equipments, research equipments and so on.

Slewing ring usually bears the axial load and radial load; it can also bear the axial load, radial load and the tilting moment at the same time.

The rotating speed of slewing ring is very slow, it will be below 10 times per minute.

    .Handling, transport and storage

    1. Handling of slewing ring

After finishing the production, the slewing ring should be put in the horizontal position and commodious room to pack. Please pay moreattention to the followings when handling the slewing ring:

First, mount more than three lifting bolts (figure 1) or mount according to the product types and using lift straps to connect all these lifting

bolt chains together; then put the product in the proper position by crane.

    9

    10/30

To avoid the damage of raceway and surface, the slewing ring should be gently handled .This will avoid to damaging the goods or reducing

    the useful life.

    Figure 1 Figure 2

    2. Package of slewing ring

The slewing ring should be put in the horizontal position and commodious room to pack. It should be inspected and covered the

    rust-preventative grease before packing.

    2.1. Export package

The type of export package: fumigation-free wooden case package (figure 2.). First, pack the slewing ring with wrapping belt or wrapping

paper after passing the inspection of the finished goods. Second, put the products in the fumigation-free wooden case and fixing them. Third, fasten the wooden case.

    2.2. Domestic package

The wooden case is usually not used as domestic package. But we can supply if the customer require the wooden case package.

    3. Transfer of slewing ring

    Please reference the handling provisions

    4. Transport of slewing ring

    4.1. Export transport

We usually use the fastened type wooden case (figure 2) or ring-shaped wooden case as export transport. This can avoid to damaging the

goods in the long time transport. We will transport the goods according to each contract.

    4.2. Domestic transport

We usually transport the goods by truck as domestic transport type. Several goods can stack together if the goods are not in wooden casepackage. For putting the goods on before stacking, three or more same height and fastened blocks (or other material chocks) should be put in the

truck. These blocks couldnt damage the goods. There also needs three or more same height intermediate layers with adequate strength to

support the weight between the slewing rings when stacking.

The height of stacking can not be more than the calculative height of the slewing ring diameter.

    5. Storage of slewing ring

    5.1. Location

Either with the wooden case package or not, the slewing ring should be put in the horizontal, commodious and ventilative room. It should

be away from the water pipe, steam pipe, heating plate and the chemicals with the damage to the goods. The slewing ring without wooden casepackage can be stacked together. Please see the [Domestic Transport] about the stack methods and provisions.

    5.2. Humidity and temperature

    11

  • 8/8/2019 20090513085239377

    12/30

The slewing ring should be put in the room with no more than 60% relative humidity and the temperature shift from 8to 30.

    5.3. Inspection

The slewing ring should be regular inspected to avoid to rusting when they are in long time storage.

We usually cover the rust-preventative grease before delivery the slewing rings. The validity of the rust-preventative grease is approx. 3 to 6

months. But the validity will be approx. 8 months if the slewing rings are stored in an undamped warehouse and follow the temperature

requirements of the warehouse strictly. The rust-preventative grease should be covered every 5 months to avoid the grease invalidates when the

slewing ring is in storage. The slewing ring should be repacked or taken other store methods for rust-preventation.

.Installation and maintenance instruction for slewing ring

    1. Installation should be done in the commodious room. Open the package, and cut the package paper or package belt with special tools, pleasebegin with the inside of internal ring or outside of the outer ring. Pay attention to the product and anti-dust system, cutting on the point ofanti-dust system is forbidden.

    2. Use standard industrial solvent, chlorinated solvent is strictly forbidden. Do not let the solvent flow into seal device or raceway (figure 3).Before installing grease nipple or connecting pipe, take off the plug first (figure 4).

    10. To ensure the smooth running of the slewing ring, the pinion and the gear ring should meet the requirement of running accuracy, running stability, contactingprecision and working backlash as required.

    11. After installing, remove extraneous material and rust. The supporting surface of slewing ring should be coated with corrosion protection. And the raceway andgears should be lubricated.

    Maintenance and Lubrication

    1. The slewing ring has been lubricated with a small amount of lithium grease according to GB/T7324-1994. The slewing ring should bere-lubricated according to particular working conditions before use.

    2. The slewing ring should be lubricated regularly according to the types of slewing rings. The requirements are as follow:a. ball-type: re-lubrication of the bearing every 100 hours for relatively rotating.

    b. roller-type: re-lubrication of the bearing every 50 hours for relatively rotating.

Under the particular working condition like tropical zone, high humidity, much dust, great temperature difference and continuous duty. The

slewing ring should be lubricated in the lower circle time. The gears should be lubricated every 150 hours under normal operation. And the gears

should be lubricated every 75 hours under abnormal operating operation. (NOTE: the gears must be wiped up before lubrication.) Idle

equipment should be re-lubricated before use. The raceway should be filled with grease till the grease flow over the raceway every time. The

slewing bearing should be rotated slowly during regreasing to ensure the uniform distribution of grease (figure 12).

    3. The slewing ring should be cleaned regularly in use process. The seal should be non-aging, non-crack, non-breakage, and non-separate.Otherwise, please exchange the seals in time. To protect to raceway from impurity and the lost of grease, the raceway should be lubricated with

relevant grease to avoid jammed and rusty.

    4. Considering the composite factor in using process, the customers can choose the proper grease according to the actual situation. For instance, graphite grease No.3 and No.4, industry grease, grease No.203, high and low temperature bearing grease No.7002, aluminum base grease and so

on.The bolts should be checked for preload after first 100 hours for regular rotating. And then do so every 500 hours to keep the sufficient

    preload.

    5. After the equipment work 2,000 hours aggregately, the bolt and its neighbors should be exchanged if the torque of unfasten bolt is below80%. All of bolts should be exchanged if 20% the torque of unfasten bolts is below 80%. After the equipment work 14,000 hours aggregately, all

bolts should be exchanged new. (Our company advise customer to refasten the fasten parts two to four months after first using. And then check

    the fasten parts every year).

    6. Pay attention to working condition such as noise, impact, power change suddenly. Please stop the equipment immediately and solve theproblem, and reinstall if necessary.

    7. In order to protect the raceway, cleaning the slewing ring with water is forbidden. Hard things should be forbidden to touch gear meshingzone.
