VOLKSWAGEN OFFERS INNOVATIVE CLEAN DIESEL
TECHNOLOGY IN TOUAREG V6 TDI One of the most fuel efficient and cleanest SUVs in the world
HERNDON, Va. — Volkswagen’s new technologically innovative and environmentally
responsible Touareg V6 TDI is one of the most fuel efficient and cleanest SUVs in the
world, and it will be available for U.S. consumers in Spring 2009. The Touareg V6 TDI
defines a completely new generation of extremely economical and low emission SUVs
and reinforces Volkswagen’s leadership in Clean Diesel technology with the most
sensible alternative fuel powerplants available today.
The Touareg V6 TDI Clean Diesel is powered by a 3.0L, turbocharged six
cylinder engine that produces 225 horsepower and an impressive 407 lbs-ft. of torque.
Utilizing third generation common rail injection and the most advanced catalytic
converter system in the world, it meets Tier 2, Bin 5/ULEV II standards and will be
available in all 50 states.
Helping the Touareg V6 TDI meet the most stringent emission requirements of
the world is its advanced DeNOx system, just one of the vehicle’s many technical
trademarks. The Touareg V6 TDI is one of the first SUVs in the world to have this
advanced type of catalytic converter on board. Its job is to convert nitrogen oxide (NOx)
components of the exhaust gas into nitrogen and water without forming any undesirable
side products. The nitrogen oxides are converted in the DeNOX catalyst using a

synthetically produced aqueous solution of urea known as AdBlue, which is transported
on the Touareg V6 TDI in a four and a half gallon auxiliary tank located under the spare
tire. The urea-based solution is continuously sprayed into the exhaust gas stream
upstream of the DeNOx catalyst. It is metered according to the mass flow rate of the
exhaust gas, and the engine management system provides for precise control based on
information from a NOx sensor downstream of the DeNOx catalyst. Finely atomized by
a screen, the urea is transformed in the hot exhaust gases upstream of the DeNOx
catalyst. In the DeNOx catalyst, it reacts with the nitrogen oxides and splits them into
nitrogen and water, reducing the NOx emissions by up to 90 percent. The AdBlue
additive is nontoxic, odorless and biodegradable.
The third-generation common rail fuel injection system makes the Touareg V6
TDI one of the most fuel efficient SUVs in the world. With a new high pressure pump
design, the system builds up a pressure of 2,000 bar or approximately 29,000 psi. The
piezo fuel injectors also have been modified for the Touareg V6 TDI. Their smaller
eight-hole nozzles inject fuel into the combustion chambers in miniscule volumes. This
new design and high-pressure pump make fuel injection even more precise and dynamic,
a major factor in the engine’s fuel efficiency.
The Touareg V6 TDI delivers excellent fuel economy figures. On the highway it
attains an impressive 25 mpg according to EPA ratings. With a fuel tank capacity of 26.4
gallons, that equates to a driving range of more than 600 miles to the tank, all while
emitting fewer emissions.
The 2009 Touareg V6 TDI can be equipped with two new technologically advanced
safety systems. An optional Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system automatically brakes
(to a complete stop if necessary) and accelerates the Touareg V6 TDI within a speed
range preset by the driver. The forward collision warning ACC system lightens the
driver’s work by active braking and acceleration, which enhances driving comfort —
especially during long expressway trips. Once set, the ACC setting can be temporarily
deactivated as soon as the driver depresses the brake pedal.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found in a study released last Spring
that forward collision warnings, like ACC available on the Touareg, showed potential to
avoid or mitigate crashes. The Institute said such systems could be relevant to more than
2 million frontal crashes that occur each year and account for more occupant fatalities
than any other kind of crash.
Another driver assistance safety system being offered is the optional Side Scan
lane change assistant. This system monitors areas behind and next to the Touareg TDI
via radar sensors in the rear bumper, one sensor on each the right and left side of the rear
bumper, and signals a potential collision via a warning light located in the outside mirror
housing. If the Side Scan system detects a critical situation to the left or right of the
Touareg TDI without the driver having activated the turn signal to indicate a lane change,
a warning lamp in the mirror housing is lit. If the driver does activate the turn signal to
indicate a lane change and the system detects that the lane is occupied, the lamp flashes
four times to draw attention to the potential hazard.
Like the rest of the Touareg line-up, the Touareg V6 TDI interior creates an
environment that is visually pleasing, modern, and as meticulously detailed as anything
found in the luxury utility category.
High quality materials; tactile, low-gloss surfaces; and rich luxurious colors are
combined with superb fit and finish. While pleasing and modern to the eye, the interior
also follows the traditional Volkswagen design philosophy that form must always follow
function. An instrument cluster with an optional color enhanced display screen provides a
wealth of information and customization for the true driver.
Luxury seating with a standard 12-way power driver’s seat makes it easy to find
just the right seating position for optimum driving comfort. Individual controls are
intuitively grouped and incorporate manageable buttons and controls, a fact clearly
conveyed in the compact center console arrangement that includes a standard dual-zone
system that can be set at constant temperature.
Like all Volkswagens, the Touareg V6 TDI includes the Prevent and Preserve
Safety System, consisting of more than 45 safety features. As standard equipment, the
Touareg V6 TDI includes six airbags (dual-stage front; dual front side thorax; and side
curtains); seatbelt pretensioners at all outboard seating positions; and three-point safety
belts with emergency locking retractors at all seating positions as well as load limiters in
the front. An advanced tire pressure monitoring system also is standard equipment as is
an intelligent crash response system.
The Touareg V6 TDI comes standard equipped with the Electronic Stabilization
Program (ESP). This is important because the National Highway and Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) has reported that ESP results in 35 percent fewer single-vehicle
crashes and 30 percent fewer single-vehicle fatalities in passenger cars. Volkswagen is
one of the only original equipment manufacturers to provide an electronic stability
control system on its entire product line as standard equipment — ahead of NHTSA’s
deadline requiring vehicles in the 2012 model year to include stability control systems.
ESP compares the driver’s intended course with the vehicle’s actual direction; if ESP
detects a discrepancy, ESP automatically brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or
reduces engine power as needed in certain driving circumstances to help maintain
directional control.
The 2009 Touareg V6 TDI comes with 24-hour Roadside Assistance for three years
or 36,000 miles (whichever occurs first) plus new vehicle warranties including:
• Five-year/60,000 mile (whichever occurs first) Powertrain Limited Warranty.
• Three-year/36,000 mile (whichever occurs first) New Vehicle Limited Warranty
with wear and tear items and adjustments.
• 12-year unlimited distance Limited Warranty against corrosion perforation.
The Touareg V6 TDI, like all 2009 model year Volkswagens, is included in the no-
charge Carefree Maintenance Program. Under this program all of the Touareg’s
scheduled maintenance, as described in its maintenance booklet, is covered for the length
of the New Vehicle Warranty — three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
Since all current Volkswagens, including Touareg, use synthetic oil, combined with state-
of-the-art German engineering, a 5,000 mile oil change no longer is necessary. This
means that like all current Volkswagen owners, Touareg drivers can drive farther
between oil changes.

exhaust emissions by up to 90%. In this regard, the air that the engine exhausts is cleaner than
the air it breathes in.
The TDI engine features the most successful efficiency technology in the world. Volkswagen
has more than 30 years experience in the development of diesel engines. The ultra-low sulfur
fuel that powers the engine was introduced nationwide in 2006.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has determined that the United States could conserve
more than 500 million barrels of crude oil per year if just one third of all passenger cars and light
commercial vehicles were equipped with modern diesel engines. Leading market research
companies such as JD Power predict a share of the U.S. market of between 12 and 15 perfect for
diesel engines – a large increase when compared with the current share of sales of about 5
percent.
In the end, diesel is good, clean fun:
• Better fuel economy than gasoline engines means high mileage.
• About 25% less greenhouse gases than gasoline engines.
• NOx reduced by 95% and particulate emissions by more than 90%.
• About 30% higher torque than gas engines.
• Towing power and endurance.
The Touareg 3.0L TDI In Detail: Clean driving the Volkswagen way
The worldwide trend toward increased individual mobility and environmental sustainability,
demands efficient, environmentally friendly transportation solutions. Volkswagen engineers are
working on a variety of powerplants from hybrids and fuel cells, to the latest in Clean Diesels.
Diesel developments can present what at first appear to be contradictory requirements – reduced
fuel consumption, fewer emissions, more power, more torque, and better responsiveness. With
its new TDI diesels, Volkswagen has reconciled these requirements – realizing reductions in
emissions while at the same time boosting performance and efficiency. This has been
accomplished by effective integration of engine design, engine management, injection systems
and exhaust gas after-treatment.
The 3.0L TDI
A durable powerhouse of an engine operates under the hood of the Touareg 3.0L TDI. In the
style of the classic American small block, the three liter V6 produces an impressive 221 hp and
407 lb/ft of torque. The diesel engine produces 137 lb/ft per liter of displacement – a level that
far surpasses that of the gasoline engine. This maximum level of pulling power is available at
1,750 to 2,750 rpm – providing the driver with a spirited power surge in all ranges.
The four valve engine is extremely compact – measuring only 440 millimeters (17.3 inches) in
length. The cylinder housing that features a 90 degree cylinder angle is constructed from high
strength vermicular graphite cast iron, which is 15 perfect lighter in weight than conventional
cast iron. Despite its unsurpassed strength, the powerful TDI engine weighs a mere 498.2
pounds. Its auxiliaries and camshafts are driven by maintenance free chains that run in a space
saving position in back of the engine. Low friction roller cam followers with hydraulic valve
clearance compensation work in the cylinder head. The four-valve technology ensures optimum
filling of cylinders in every situation. Quickstart heater plugs are adapted to extremely cold
temperatures – they heat up to more than 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit within the space of two
seconds, helping make starting easier.
Common rail system for quiet operation
The heart of this clean, highly efficient engine is a common-rail fuel injection system that uses
fast, precise electronically controlled piezo electric fuel injectors, rather than a traditional
mechanical system. The fuel is pressurized along the common rail and is fed directly in to the
combustion chamber. This technology allows higher injection pressures (pressure output
measures 2,000 bar/29,000 psi) which better atomize the fuel, enhance performance with more
efficient combustion and make it easier to control emissions.
The common rail system relies on highly precise rapidly switching piezo injectors, which have
75 percent fewer moving components and mass, allowing them to switch at two times the speed
of previous solenoid-valve injectors. This allows the piezo injectors to significantly lower diesel
emissions, increase the achievable engine power and noticeably lower engine noise achieved by
an even pressure and temperature increase in the combustion chamber.
The injectors in the common rail system employ the piezo effect (the production of electricity
when stress is applied), in which an electric voltage is applied to a special ceramic, altering its
crystal structures. This results in a certain amount of expansion, which is transferred directly to
the injectors. (The word piezo is derived from the Greek piezein, which means to squeeze or
press.)
Multiple injection events per cycle
With piezo injectors, the number of injection processes per cycle can be varied and optimized
almost at will. In the lower speed range, additional double pilot injection occurs in addition to
the main injection process; in the medium range there’s a single pilot injection. Simple post
injection occurs up to around 2,500 rpm and under partial load. This strategy reduces emissions
and ensures a smoother combustion process, which primarily benefits the engine’s acoustic
behavior. The 3.0 TDI produces a quiet, cultivated and harmonious sound. The hard “knocking”
and metallic rattling at partial load is history.
The V6 TDI features a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry on board. This improves
propulsive power at low rpms. Its vanes are guided by an electric servo motor.. Two large
intercoolers reduce the temperature of the compressed air in order to increase the overall
efficiency.
Ultra low emission system
The ultra low emission system combines a complete package of innovative features, including
the new common rail system with piezo injectors and optimized turbocharging, described above,
plus highly efficient exhaust gas recirculation all of which reduces engine emissions.
Another technical breakthrough is the cleaning system in the exhaust gas system, which reduces
nitrous oxide emissions by up to 90 percent. AdBlue, a liquid 32.5 percent urea solution, which
is sprayed in small amounts into the DeNOx catalyst, aids this process. In the hot exhaust, the
solution breaks down into ammonia, converting nitrogen oxide (NOx) components of the exhaust
gas into nitrogen and water without forming any undesirable side products. The urea based
solution is metered according to the mass flow rate of the exhaust gas; the engine management
system provides for precise control based on information from a NOx sensor downstream of the
SCR catalytic converter. The urea additive is non-toxic, odorless and biodegradable.
The complete system consists of the DeNOx catalyst, a dosing module and the AdBlue tank.
The solution has a freezing point of 12 degrees Fahrenheit, which is why the tank system is
heated in extremely cold conditions. The control sensors are also highly elaborate: two NOx
sensors measure the concentration of nitrous oxide, which all functions are monitored with
pressure and temperature sensors. The AdBlue tank is located under the spare tire.
Total convenience for the customers
The biodegradable AdBlue solution is refilled at the dealership at a regular maintenance interval,
without requiring the customer to concern themselves.
TDI engines feature high propulsive power
The greatest strength of TDI diesel engines is their tremendous torque. Their propulsive power
makes these diesel engines clearly superior to any comparable gasoline engine. This mighty
power is also available at extremely low revs – just a little over idle speed – as a smooth but
insistently applied impulse that requires only the slightest pressure on the accelerator.
In sharp contrast to many stressed, high revving gasoline engines, the propulsive power is always
available when it’s needed – and this contributes to a highly composed, relaxed style of driving.
TDI engines are quiet and comfortable
The modern direct injection diesel engines from Volkswagen are hardly perceptible to the ears of
their passengers – their operation is virtually indistinguishable from that of a gasoline engine.

Electronic Stabilization Program Technology Backgrounder
All 2009 Volkswagens come standard equipped with Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP). ESP has been called the most important safety device since the safety belt and the most important safety advance of this generation. To paraphrase one auto writer, “it’s like having a guardian angel as your co-pilot.” ESP Snapshot
• Helps prevent oversteer and understeer (fishtailing). • Uses technology applied in the Stealth aircraft to keep it aloft to measure the spin
of the vehicle. • Applies computer technology to help the driver maintain control. • NHTSA research found ESC could save 10,000 lives a year.
ESC Advantage
Multiple studies from the U.S., Europe and Asia have concluded that vehicles equipped with ESC have in the range of 35 percent fewer crashes. NHTSA studies conducted specifically in the U.S. concluded that passenger cars equipped with ESC experienced a 30 percent reduction in fatal single vehicle crashes. The same study concluded that SUVs equipped with ESC experienced a 63 percent reduction in fatal single-vehicle crashes. The NHTSA research saw a reduction in crashes that also involve a rollover by more than 70 percent. The studies conducted by NHTSA and others reached similar findings when it came to reducing the incidence of crashes overall: vehicles equipped with ESC saw a significant net reduction in crashes. The agency predicts that ESC could save 10,500 lives and prevent between 168,000 and 252,000 injuries every year. That equates to more than $40 billion savings in economic losses in the U.S. alone. One independent study conducted in 2006 by the prestigious Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) concluded that ESC could prevent nearly one-third of all fatal crashes and reduce the risk of rolling over by as much as 80 percent. ESP takes advantage of the great advances in electronics that have occurred in the past 20 years to be in the vanguard of active or primary safety systems. ESP is the sum of three functions — antilock brakes that enable individual braking and control at the four comers

of the vehicle, traction control which affects acceleration, and yaw control that addresses the spin of a vehicle.
ESP is a vehicle control system comprised of sensors and a microcomputer that continuously monitors how well a vehicle responds to the driver’s steering input and selectively applies individual brakes and modulates engine power to help keep the vehicle traveling along the path indicated by the steering wheel position. If an unstable condition develops — such as a sudden evasive maneuver or going too fast through the curve of a freeway exit ramp — within a fraction of a second, ESC intervenes via engine electronics and the brake system to help align the vehicle with where the driver is pointing the vehicle.
