Over the past 28 seasons, few coaches have been as successful as current Texas A&M-Corpus Christi head cross country/track and fi eld coach Shawn Flanagan.

Beginning his 28th season in col-legiate coaching — including fi ve as an assistant coach, Flanagan’s athletes have performed well at the highest levels of competition, both at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and in his other coaching stops at the University of Texas and the University of Texas-San Antonio.

In his coaching career, Flanagan has guided over 50 competitors to national championship meets in

both track and fi eld and cross country. His success has continued while building the Islander track & fi eld and cross country pro-grams from scratch.

In his 10 seasons at A&M-Corpus Christi, Flanagan’s teams have won multiple independent titles in cross country and have won the last two Southland Conference crowns in women’s cross country. The men were second and third the past two seasons. This past fall Anne Ronoh became the fi rst female cross country runner to reach the NCAA Championship meet after a top 12 fi nish in the region.

Flanagan also mentored dis-tance runner Shadrack Songok, who was an All-American on multiple occasions and won three national titles in his ca-reer. Songok won back-to-back titles in the 10,000-meter run in 2007 and ’08 and won the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Championship. He com-peted in consecutive NCAA Championship meets in cross county after winning the South-land Conference and NCAA South Central Region titles in 2006 and 2007. In all, Son-gok competed in seven NCAA Championship meets in his time as an Islander.

Songok wasn’t alone at the national meet in 2008. Hickel Woolery returned for the sec-ond year to compete in the discus, while Kassandrea Son

and Hannah Manieus advanced to the regionals. Over the sum-mer, Woolery won the Jamaican National title in the discus. In the summer of ‘07, Woolery advanced to the NCAA Championships in the discus becoming the fi rst Islander to reach the meet in a fi eld event. That summer, Woolery went on to place second at the Jamaican National Championships and ninth at the Pan Am Games in the discus.

Prior to joining the Southland Conference, Flanagan’s Islanders won four Independent Championships in cross country for women and three for men. The coach earned Independent Coach-of-the-Year honors each time. The cross-country teams have been ranked regionally on a regular basis for several seasons.

As an independent, Flanagan led the women to four Indepen-dent Championships including their fi nal season as an indy in 2005. The fi nal title in cross country in 2005 allowed the women to rebound from a second-place fi nish the prior season en route to seventh at the South Central Regional meet. Yvette Rodriguez missed all-region honors by one spot for the women, while J.R. Pulido followed up a second-place fi nish in the men’s Indepen-dent Championship race by becoming the fi rst men’s all-region performer. He was the top men’s runner in 2004 fi nishing eighth at the Independent Championship.

During the 2003 campaign, both the Islander men’s and women’s cross country teams posted three top-fi ve fi nishes, including wins at

the Independent Championship. In 2002, the Islanders posted an impressive campaign, as the Islander women won four titles (including the Texas A&M Invitational) and the men won back-to-back titles late in the season. Both teams captured the Houston and Southern Indepen-dent Championships.

After competing in their fi rst cross country season in 2000, the Islanders made tremendous strides in 2001. Both teams defeated Texas-Pan American twice and Texas-San Antonio and the men broke into the re-gional poll at No. 10.

Flanagan came to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi after serving as the head cross country/assis-tant track & fi eld coach at the University of Texas during the 1997 to 1999 seasons. Prior to joining the Longhorns, he was an instrumental component in the beginning of another Divi-sion I program at UTSA. After serving as assistant coach for

four seasons, Flanagan inherited the Roadrunner program and quickly established it on not only a regional, but national level. During his time at Texas-San Antonio, Flanagan’s teams captured 19 Southland Conference and Trans American Conference team championships.

In 1996, Flanagan piloted the Roadrunners women’s cross country team to a fi rst-place fi nish in the region and 19th at the NCAAs. They were the fi rst school not previously affi liated with the former Southwest Conference to win the region.

Aside from his duties and responsibilities as a coach, Flanagan has been involved in the operation and planning of numerous athletic events and associations.

A two-time honorable mention All-American at Wisconsin-Platteville, Flanagan served as the associate meet director of the track & fi eld portion of the 1993 U.S. Olympic Festival held in San Antonio and also handled the duties of vice president of the USA South Texas Track & Field Association from 1990-94.

Following graduation, Flanagan served four years in the U.S. Army (1978-82) before taking the assistant position with the Roadrunners. Flanagan completed his master’s at UTSA in 1982.

Former Texas A&M-Corpus Christi distance standout, J.R. Pulido is in second season with the Islanders as a graduate assistant after completing his eligibility in the spring of 2008.

Pulido earned multiple All-Southland Conference honors in cross country and track. As a senior he placed fi fth at the SLC Cross Country Champion-ship meet. He was the fi rst Islander to earn all-region honors in cross country with a 22nd-place fi nish in 2005 after placing second at the Independent Championship. A native of Columbus, Pulido graduated wtih a degree in kinesiology.

Three-time national champion Shadrack Songok returns to the Islander family this season as a graduate assistant.

Songok won a national title indoors in the 5,000-meter run and won a pair of national titles in the 10,000-meter run. He fi nished his Islander career as a 6-time All-American and as the Islander record holder in multiple events.

He graduated from A&M-Corpus Christi in the spring of 2008 with a degree in chemistry. Last fall, he began his masters at Texas A&M while he fi nished his eligibilty earning All-America honors in cross country and led the Aggie team to an NCAA Championship appearance.

Philemon Tanui begins his fi rst season as a graduate assistant for the Islanders after spending two seasons on the coaching staff at his alma mater Wyoming.

Tanui was a fi ve-time All-Mountain West Conference performer, twice during the outdoor season in his patented event of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, once during the indoor season and twice while running cross country. He also qualifi ed twice for Regionals in the steeplechase.

Tanui is working on his MBA at A&M-Corpus Christi. He is also a USATF Level I Certifi ed Coach.

With the deepest rosters in the history of both the men’s and women’s teams, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cross country teams are looking forward to strong campaigns high-lighted by hosting the Southland Conference Championship for the second time in three years at West Guth Park.

The women have 17 runners on their roster with a solid mix of returnees and newcomers. Leading the returnees for the Islanders is Anne Ronoh, who became the fi rst TAMUCC female to compete at the NCAA Champi-onships. Ronoh, who was second to Mecke in the conference meet, advanced with an 11th-place fi nish at the South Central Region meet.

All-Southland runners Caitlyn Aram-bula and Courtney Johnson provide depth amongst the other returnees. Also back are Sarah De Los Santos, Sheila Salil, and Kris-tine Torres. A lex Bu l -lard is also back for her sophomore season, but may redshirt due to inju-ries.

Meghan Lemke and D a n i e l a Prado are back after redshirting last season. Faith Barlow will see her first action a s an I s -lander after training with the team a season ago and missing the year as a transfer from UTSA.

“We have tremendous depth with 17 runners and I am really optimistic with what we could accomplish,” said Flanagan. “Anne looks better at this point this year than she did last year and so does Sheila. Caitlyn and Courtney have been solid, but Kristine may miss a period of time with an injury.

“Meghan has been hampered by her ankle, but I expect her to be ready. Thus far, Sarah has been the best surprise. She is running better than anyone.”

Several newcomers could also fi gure into the mix. Breanna Briggs, Shelby Nicholls and Melissa Jones have all looked ready to make

an impact in training. Emily Jones and Cara Patterson will likely be redshirted.

“Breanna has run well in training,” said Fla-nagan. “Shelby and Melissa have also been in good form. They should be able to step up if the returnees struggle.”

With the added depth, Flanagan is hoping to win his third straight Southland Conference title in women’s cross country and improve its

regional ranking.“Stephen F. Austin may have the top two

runners this year so for us to be successful we need to place fi ve to seven runs between their second and third runners,” said the coach. “If we can get one of our top runners to get in between their fi rst two, I think we will be in a position to have a banner year. It would put us in a position to crack the top four in the region and compete for a spot in the national meet

as a team.”The men will be looking to improve on their

third place fi nish a season ago and have a core of four returnees they are counting on. Scott Vance is the top returning fi nisher from last year’s SLC meet placing 11th to just miss all-conference honors. Ari Perez, Kirk Dalheim and Eloy Zertuche also return with experience.

“Thus far, Ari, Kirk and Eloy have come back looking strong in practice,” said Flanagan. “Scott has struggled and is coming around slowly. I am hopeful he will come around when it counts.”

A group of newcomers have caught the veterans eye.

“ Jo r-d a n V a l l e has run as well as any-b o dy, ” said Fla-nagan . “Patrick K i m e l i arrived l a t e f r o m K e n y a but has l ooked v e r y g o o d s i n c e

getting off the plane. Curtis Patton, Daniel Barlow and David Wells have also trained well.

“We have a handful of other newcomers that we may redshirt, but am not sure if we will need them. With the depth that we have on the men’s side, I think we have the best men’s team we’ve had from top to bottom.”

Flanagan’s goal is to fi nish in the top two.“Lamar is favored to win the men’s title

again and SFA will be tough again,” said the coach. “But I am optimistic that we can

compete with them. Lamar will be in the running for a spot in the national meet and if things go really well we could compete with them. How-ever, that being said we will have our hands full with SFA and UTSA.”

“I am excited for both the men and women,” said the coach. “The newcomers have impressed on each side, while the returnees appear to have done their work over the summer to be ready for the new season.”

The goal of the Center for Athletic Academic Services is to provide services that enhance the academic experience, assist in the retention and development of student-athletes. CAAS promotes the department’s CHAMPS/Life Skills and CHOICES programs and the fi ve com-mitment areas (commitment to academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development, career development and service). Among the services offered are study hall, a computer lab, tutoring, as well as learning assistants. Scholastic su-pervisors work with the department, stu-dents, coaches, faculty and staff to co-ordinate an athlete’s schedule, academic eligibility, and provide support.

The CAAS is located on the second fl oor of Classroom East is directed by Jennifer Baker. She is assisted by Bailey Wilson, Kayleigh McCauley and Alfonso Ramos.

Along with starting a new intercolle-giate athletic program from ground zero, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi began building its athletic training program during the 1999-2000 campaign to help care for the student-athlete. Under the direction of Jerry Hilker, the Director of Athletic Training, assistant athletic trainers Julie Ellena, Dan Huffman, and graduate assistants Elissa Jaime, Liz Laird and Tracey Oakes, Island-ers receive the best care in the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries. Support is provided by a handful of team doctors and student athletic trainers enrolled in the athletic training program.

The athletic training facility will be moving into Island Hall in May of 2010 providing state-of-the-art 3,500-sq. feet of space, a Hydroworks hydrotherapy pool, increased offi ce space and numerous other ammen-tinties for the care of student athletes.

Dr. Flavius C. Killebrew became the tenth President of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi on January 6, 2005, appointed by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.

Dr. Killebrew came to the University from Canyon, where he was Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at West Texas A&M University (WTAMU). He was born and raised in the Texas Panhandle town of Canadian, where he worked the family ranch alongside his father and three brothers. He earned bachelor’s degrees from WTAMU in 1971 and a year later was awarded his master’s degree.

In 1976, Dr. Killebrew received a doctorate in zoology from the University of Arkansas. That same year he re-turned to WTAMU as a Professor of biology and moved through the faculty ranks, achieving tenured professor rank in 1988. He was named Director of the Graduate School, a title that changed to Dean of the Graduate School and Research in 1991. He was appointed interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1994 and the fol-lowing year, the appointment was made permanent.

The author of more than 60 journal articles, Dr. Kille-brew is still an avid researcher and frequent presenter at conferences and conventions. Based largely on his efforts and expertise, the Cagle’s Map Turtle Graptemys caglei has been recommended for listing as a threatened spe-cies.

Dr. Killebrew is active in several educational organi-zations, including the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Texas International Education Con-sortium and the Council of Public University Presidents and Chancellors. He is also on the Advisory Board of the Texas A&M University Press and the editorial review boards of several academic publications. In addition, he serves on

the boards of the USS Lexington, the South Texas Institute for the Arts, and the American Bank Advisory Board.

Dr. Killebrew is married to the former Kathy Bartley, and they have a daughter and granddaughter.

Timothy Fitzpatrick was named the third athletic director in the history of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi athletic de-partment on Wednesday, Aug. 19 after spending the past four seasons in a senior leadership role in the Indiana Uni-versity athletic department. He fi lls the position that had been vacated since 2008.

Prior to joining the Islanders, Fitzpatrick had served since January 2005 as the senior associate athletic director at Indiana. With the Hoosiers, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construc-tion and facilities management, and had oversight of the football and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including market-ing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, department website, and publications.

During his tenure, he helped the department negotiate a $21,000,000 contract with Adidas and worked extensively with Learfi eld Sports/IU Sports Properties and the Big Ten Network, who brought a combined $9,000,000 in revenue to the program each year. He also saw his area help gen-erate $1,971,183 in ticket sales revenue in excess of bud-geted projections, a 15-percent improvement.

Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous fi ve years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick direct-ed a fundraising effort that saw Army’s donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and funds grow from $500,000 to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt WEPN-AM 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000.

Fitzpatrick arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external affairs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte re-sulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-per-cent increase in planned gifts.

Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving.

Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He

was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs na-tionally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue.

He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commis-sioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpat-rick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local televi-sion syndication efforts.

Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92.

A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his mas-ter’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.
