The International African Inventors MuseumIAIM, formerly the International Black Inventions Museum is a traveling museum that has travel around the world highlighting the contributions that Africans and African people in the Diaspora have made to the areas of Science, Technology and everyday inventions, we now take for granted today. Seen by over 10 million people world wide this museum promised to delight and enlighten all who pass through its displays. Now permanently located in Canada, curators Mr. & Mrs. Francis Jeffers have further developed the exhibits to now include a dynamic array of African Canadian Scientists and Inventors who have made a significant difference in the lives of everyday Canadians and people around the world. IAIM has over 250 exhibits and over 100 miniature artifacts on display. This is a must see exhibit that will have your students talking for weeks to come and will open a new understanding of African people contribution to the world of Science, Technology and Inventions.Level: Grades: 6 – 12University / College / Corporate

Traditional African & Caribbean StorytellersThis presentation of Traditional African storytelling is sure to delight the child in everyone, no matter what the age. Presented by a variety of artist who are a collective of seasoned performers with over forty years experience. The Sherehekea Celebration brings together Griots, Storytellers, Poets, Spoken-word, and Conscious rapping together under one program formatting for student and adults of all ages. Experience the great tradition of African Storytelling at its best as we presents African stories that are hundreds of years old, some dating back five hundred years or more from the continent. African DrummingThis presentation brings Traditional African Drums and Drumming to students. Students will delight as they listen to the intense rhythms of the Talking Drum, Bongo and Djembe played by these experienced drummers. Students will become transfixed with the music of the African drums as they sway to the rhythms of music. Listen and feel the love of the rhythmic beat of the African drums as it rolls through your student’s soul. This feature also comes with a short lesson on the drums for select student and a “DRUM OFF” with as many students possible. This is an interactive presentation that will encourage students to explore African music and culture. Listen with your heart, while the music takes you to Africa.Level: Grades: 5 – 12University / College / Corporate

African DancingThis group of the presenters will bring students to their feet. The dancers in this section are seasoned performers who have been performing for over ten years. We are sure this will enchant all students with the many African Dance Beats and Techniques that will be showcased and will have your students wanting to get up and dance too. A brief session will be held to teach a number of students who volunteer some very simple moves and then a free dance will be offered to everyone who wants to participate. African dancing is one of the most exhilarating dances in the world; all will surely enjoy the music and movement.Level: Grades: 5 – 12

African Dance WorkshopsThis one-hour program is designed to introduce all students to the wonderful world of Africa Dance. This program is structured to give your students a solid introduction to the basic movements of dance. Children are exposed to a broad spectrum of sound including music Styles of African dancing: Travel the various regions of Africa including such countries as Somalia, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Nigeria to name a few.Level: Grades: 1 – 12

International Dance WorkshopsThis one-hour program is designed to introduce young students to the wonderful world of International Dance. This program is structured to give children a solid introduction to the basic movements of dance. Children are exposed to a broad spectrum of sound including music from Africa, India, Latin America, China, First Nations, Europe, The Middle East and a range of music from within those regions including such countries as Somalia, Ethiopia, Iran, Israel, Morocco and Ukraine to name a few.Level: Grades: JK – 3

Voice of a Generation – Spoken WordsWith its blend of hip-hop stylistics, political empowerment, anger and beauty, spoken word has become a voice for America’s youth, activists, and those typically seen as voiceless. Spoken word, at its simplest, is nothing more than the oral tradition of poetry. But in the coffeehouses and bars across the country, where poets step up to microphones to speak memorized verses of personal truths, this scene becomes the nexus of art, activism and culture for an entire generation. Lecture Series with Akwatu KhentiLegacies of Black Civilization This 3-part series is only available from December 2006 to March 2007. Each session extends from 60 to minutes and involves a multi-media presentation. You may choose sessions of the program that are more relevant and/or timely for various classes or student interests. Exploring the Legacies of Black Civilizations is a workshop/presentation series that consists of the following 3 sessions and learning objectives:

The Meaning of Kwanzaa: Values to live by throughout the year. Participants: Learn and experience the cultural history of the celebration; Explore the meaning of the various rituals, symbols and values; Gain appreciation for the lessons for daily living embodied in the Kwanzaa celebration

Black Contributions to the World of Science and Civilization. Participants: Learn about the emergence and evolution of architecture, medicine and mathematics in

Africa; Explore the development process of various technologies related to agriculture, astronomy

and the calendar; Gain appreciation for the unique approaches to common human problems that emerged in

Africa as well as African ideas that can inform contemporary scientific challenges to humanity.

The Black Experience in Canada. Participants: Learn about the various historical experiences of Canadians of African heritage, including

enslavement, the arrival and experiences of Black Loyalists in the 1780s and the Underground Railroad in the 1800s;

Explore the various survival strategies employed by African Canadians as well as the inter-dependence of local Black struggles with geo-politics, the Canadian positions and American and British responses.

Gain appreciation for the uniquely Canadian aspects of the Black experience in this country. The program fosters appreciation and understanding for the tremendous diversity and inter-

dependence of human culture and history, science and world civilization. The program also aims to broaden thinking and analytical skills around issues related to diversity, humanities, and science and current events.

Lecture Series with Akwatu KhentiFundamentals of Afrocentricity: the Evolution of Black Identity and Western Civilization. This 90-minute workshop is only available from January 1 to February 28, 2008.  The workshop is designed to meet several important learning objectives.  Participants will:

Gain greater understanding of the socio-cultural forces that contributed to modern Black identify

o African cultural traditions o Negative and positive stereotypes going back to Greco-Roman times o Indentured servitude and the rise of the Atlantic slave trade o Patterns of resistance to slavery

o The human rights struggles of the 20th century

o The emergence of the Afrocentric movement Appreciate the contributions that Black people made to Western Civilization o Black legacies that have influenced developments in Western Civilization o Black literary and scientific contributions o Capitalism, slavery and colonization o Ongoing struggles for place and recognition

 This program fosters appreciation and understanding for the complexities underlying current debates on Black identity, academic achievement and racial barriers.  It highlights the social and curriculum gaps that give rise to the need for educational alternatives as well as the historic context of current debates.  The workshop emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach to the current issues and a critical role for the Black struggle in to the progress of Western Civilization. It also builds thinking and analytical skills around issues related to diversity and current events.  Level: Grades: 8 – 12University / College / Corporate

Lecture Series Mr. Marc Auguste Jr.This fun interactive presentation is a great way to excite and encourage young minds to think "outside the box”. They can tap into their extraordinary power to create and invent things everyday. Combining impromptu musical examples with the art of inventing, participants will explore ideas on how to create, learn about the inventing process and reasons why we invent. It will also entertain and teach kids on the role of past and present inventions in their daily lives. This workshop is an absolute must for all young minds to experience CURRICULUM COVERED Identify ways to tap into the imagination Develop observation & inquisitive skills - Working in groups Identify elements that lead to inspiration which foster the creative aspect in students Demonstrating how and where inspiration comes from – Using individual talents to invent Foster cooperation with peers – Appreciation of historical achievements and innovations Understanding of the range of human creativity Level: Grades: 4 - 8 English or French Maximum: 300 students per session

As assistant curator of the International African Inventors Museum (IAIM) and co-creator of the Canadian International Multicultural Inventors Museum (CIMIM), Ms. Elliott’s goal is to promote the positive images of ALL people and to showcase, highlight and dispel the pervasive thought that People of Color have not contributed to the world.
