welcomeWelcome to Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. You won’t fi nd another place that offers such a perfect blend of elegance, style, fun and adventure – all in the beautiful Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania.

The Hardy family journey began in 1987 with the purchase of the Nemacolin Resort property. It began with a vision: to create a world-class resort unlike any other. To create a getaway designed for couples, families, corporate gatherings – “a little something for everyone” destination.

Twenty plus years later, we’re proud to offer guests AAA Four-Diamond lodging, dining, amenities, activities with superior service throughout the resort. We’re equally proud of the newest in our line of luxury accommodations – Falling Rock, named to prestigious Five-Diamond status 2007, 2008 and 2009. One of only 93 hotels in the country to receive Five Diamonds. And Lautrec is also a recipient of the AAA Five-Diamond award in 2008 and in 2009, the restaurant received both AAA Five-Diamond and Mobil Five-Star. The combination makes Nemacolin one of only nineteen resorts in the world to boast Five Diamond lodging and dining.

Our vision, our dream, has been realized. We strive each day to bring something new – something fresh – to the experience. This brochure will provide information that will make your stay with us more enjoyable. And if there is anything we can do to be of additional service, please ask.

We look forward to sharing a memorable visit with you.

Sincerely,

Maggie Hardy MagerkoOwner & President

In 1740, a trail was carved through the rugged Laurel Highlands between what is now Cumberland, Maryland, and Brownsville, Pennsylvania. The trailblazer was a native Lenae Lenape Indian Chief named Nemacolin. Assisted by frontiersman Thomas Cresap, Chief Nemacolin plotted what is still considered to be the most direct route from East to West.

Nemacolin’s trail was later widened and used by Colonel George Washington and General Edward Braddock during the French & Indian War. Fort Necessity was constructed near the trail and remains a nationally renowned point of interest today.

In the mid 1800s, Congress established the fi rst National “High Way” utilizing Nemacolin’s trail and extended it westward. Until the railroads became prevalent some fi fty years later, this highway was the major means of East to West transportation. Today, this highway is known as U.S. Route 40.

During the 19th century, the Laurel Highlands became a popular and fashionable retreat for wealthy Pittsburgh industrialists and merchants. Attracted to the natural beauty of the mountains, they built vacation homes throughout the area. The Kaufmann family of Pittsburgh department store fame built the area’s most popular home, Fallingwater, in the 1930s. Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece, remains an outstanding example of Wright’s genius and talent.

In 1968, Rockwell International decided to construct a Tudor-

style lodge to accommodate their vacationing business associates and friends. Architect C. W. Balling of nearby Fairchance, Pennsylvania, designed the building for Willard Rockwell, his former college roommate. The original structure, with ten guest rooms, quickly proved to be insuffi cient. Twenty-three additional rooms were added and decorated by Mrs. Rockwell. The property was stocked with a variety of game birds and various breeds of imported and native deer. Weekend hunting retreats were arranged for Mr. Rockwell’s business colleagues. A trap shooting area and quail walk completed the hunting reserve.

Since guests came to hunt primarily in the spring and fall, a golf course and tennis courts were added for summer recreation. Lake Louise and Lake Carol were built in honor of Mr. Rockwell’s daughter and daughter-in- law at the same

time. For convenience, an airstrip was added. Off-property, Beaver Creek was being developed into the excellent trout stream it remains today.

Mr. Rockwell sold the property in 1979 to Cordelia Mellon Scaife. Ms. Scaife operated the Inn as a private conference center for two years, then closed it in 1981. In 1982, Ms. Scaife sold the Inn to Kent Rockwell, Willard Rockwell’s son.

Kent opened the Inn to the public as a conference center. He added an outdoor swimming pool, the fi rst Golden Trout restaurant and the Maples condominiums. After a fi nancial reversal, the bank took possession of the property in 1986. The Inn remained closed until 1987, when it was placed on the auction block. Nemacolin was sold at auction to Joseph A. Hardy III, the founder of 84 Lumber. From the date of purchase to present day, Mr. Hardy and his daughter Maggie have been, and continue to be, committed to evolving the property into a world-class destination.

golfThe golf experience at Nemacolin is as thrilling as it is relaxing. The resort features two distinctly unique courses: Mystic Rock and The Links. Both provide a challenge; both offer spectacular scenery and layout. Enjoy!

MYSTIC ROCKGolf lover? A round on the PGA tour-tested Mystic Rock is a must. Having challenged some of the best players in the world – John Daly, Vijay Singh, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson – “The Rock” stands ready to do battle.

Designed by the legendary Pete Dye, Mystic Rock plays 7,526 yards from the tips. On any given hole, players will likely encounter Dye’s strategically-placed bunkers, boulders and water hazards. A par-72 course layout – with a 78.3 rating and a 152 slope – “The Rock” has garnered top honors from Golf Magazine and Golf Digest.

Even better, golfers can play from one of several tees on each hole. A great way to test your ability, while playing to a suitable length.

THE LINKSThe Links is Nemacolin Woodlands’ original golf course and provides a stark contrast to Mystic Rock. A tricky par-70, The Links’ small, undulating greens are set against the picturesque mountain setting of the Laurel Highlands.

At 6,658 yards from the tips, reaching most of the holes is not a problem…but that’s where the fun begins. Putting these problematic greens can give even the most accomplished player fi ts!

The Links provides a fi rst-rate golfi ng experience that is sculpted through the Laurel Highlands where rocks and water naturally come into play on several holes. Deep woods, high rough and lakes surround the beautiful fairways with majestic views of the Alleghenies.

THE NEMACOLIN GOLF ACADEMYThe Nemacolin Woodlands Golf Academy/Nike Tech Center offers a unique balance of golf instruction and club fi tting designed exclusively to help your game. Our PGA Instructors (led by PGA Master Professional and two-time Teacher of the Year, Dennis Clark) have over 50 years of teaching and club-fi tting experience and are sure to fi nd a cure for your golfi ng woes.

Our Teaching philosophy is simple: No two swings are alike, so no two lessons should be either. All our instructional programs are individualized based on your swing faults. We will not put you in a mold or try to make you swing like the pros. We will take the swing you bring, work with it, help you understand it, and have you hitting better golf shots in no time. We understand that, in most cases, you are not interested in qualifying for the PGA or LPGA Tour; you just want to play to your skill level. Now is your chance to do just that!

12 13

We have the latest in computerized club-fi tting. Our Nike 360 system is designed to determine precisely what golf clubs are right for you. A complete 45-minute to one-hour fi tting session will let you know your exact club specifi cations.

Finally, every student receives a personalized, take home DVD as a reminder of all the things you learned about your game, and what you’ll need to work on for next time.

Whether you just want a quick one-hour tune up or a complete refresher in one of our mini-school programs, you owe it to your game to take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity. No trip to Nemacolin Woodlands is complete without a stop by our state-of-the-art Golf Academy.

The venue features 30 shooting stands (on two courses), towers, “fun stations,” and fi ve stand

Additionally, The Chateau and Lodge house six Nemacolin Rooms, six Sequoia Rooms, The Hardy Boardroom, Joseph’s and the Club Room – each designed to provide a customized experience.

Those seeking the utmost in luxury and group accommodations are invited to experience Falling Rock, an AAA Five Diamond Award recipient. A 42-room boutique setting, Falling Rock caters to the corporate community – with the hotel’s intimate Malachite serving as an executive “boardroom away from the boardroom.” A few steps away, guests will fi nd the grand Horizon Point, a 17,200-square-foot meeting and social venue designed with the same Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired décor of Falling Rock.

To break up a day of meetings, guests are encouraged to participate in the resort’s team building programs. Perhaps a competitive round of Survivor? A trip through the ropes course? Each activity helps foster teamwork; each “event” brings creativity and enthusiasm to the most serious of corporate outings.

And after the meetings adjourn for the day? All resort amenities are available to group guests. Why not a round of golf on the PGA Tour-tested Mystic Rock? A dip in the pool? A treatment in the resort’s award-winning Woodlands Spa? Sporting clays? Off-Road Driving? Fly fi shing?

One can only imagine the possibilities.
