Individually in the national rankings:
Brandi Personett is ninth in the all-around with a
Regional Qualifying Average of 39.465, and also
sits tied for sixth in the nation on vault with a
Regional Qualifying Average of 9.920 and ranks
fourth in the country on floor with a Regional
Qualifying Average of 9.930. Whitney Bencsko
ranks tied for 17th on vault with an RQS of 9.895.
Penn State & NCAAs This is the first team appearance for the Nittany
Lions since the 2005 season, and only junior Brandi
Personett has NCAA Championship experience as
she qualified as an individual all-arounder in each of
the last two seasons. Penn State finished 10th in the
country in 2005 and since 1993 under head coach
Steve Shephard, the Lions have nine NCAA team
berths, including a seventh-place finish in 2000.
Last season, Personett earned NACGC/W First
Team All-America status on beam and finished fifth
in the nation on the apparatus.
What’s Age Got To Do With It? The 2009 Penn State squad has no seniors. Of
the 13 members, six are juniors, three are sopho-
mores and four are freshmen. At the NCAA
Regional Championships, 11 of the 13 members
contributed to the second-place finish with only jun-
iors Rosie Smith and Lindsey Montross sitting out
due to injuries.
Regional Honors Head coach Steve Shephard was named the
NCAA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year, it was
announced after the NCAA Regional
Championships on April 4. In addition, assistant
coaches Jessica Bastardi and Randy Monahan
shared NCAA Northeast Regional Co-Assistant
Coach of the Year honors, and junior Brandi
Personett was named the NCAA Northeast Region
Gymnast of the Year.
Personett Stays At The Top With her second place finish in the all-around at
the NCAA Regional Championships in Raleigh, N.C.
on April 4, junior Brandi Personett has finished
among the top two in each of the 12 meets of the
season. She has nine scores of 39.000 or better,
including a career high 39.600 against Ohio State
and Alabama at Rec Hall on March 1.

Personett, Bencsko, ShephardPick Up Big Ten ConferenceHonors At the Big Ten Championships in
Champaign, Ill., on March 21, junior Brandi
Personett was named the Big Ten Gymnast of
the Year, the first honor of her career and the
fifth for a Nittany Lion gymnast since Penn
State joined the Big Ten for the 1992 season.
Head coach Steve Shephard earned his third
Big Ten Coach of the Year accolade, sharing
the recognition with Illinois’ Bob Starkell. Ohio
State’s Taylor Jones was named the Big Ten
Freshman of the Year. Both Personett and
freshman Whitney Bencsko picked up All-Big
Ten honors, with Personett earning first team
recognition and Bencsko receiving second
team accolades. The awards mark the 42nd
and 43rd total All-Big Ten accolades for the
Nittany Lions since joining the league for the
1992 season.
Personett Defends Big Ten Title Junior Brandi Personett defended her Big
Ten floor title from a year ago, tying with Illinois’
Sarah Schmidt and Michigan’s Kylee
Botterman for this season’s title with a career-
high-tying 9.950. She fell just shy of her third
straight Big Ten all-around title, tying for second
with a 39.475, her fourth-best score of the sea-
son. Freshman Whitney Bencsko placed 15th in
the all-around competition with a 38.900. In all,
14 Big Ten gymnasts posted all-around scores
of 39.050 or better. Minnesota’s Carmelina
Carabajal claimed the Big Ten crown with a
39.500.
Personett Named GOW ForNinth Time Junior Brandi Personett was named the Big
Ten Gymnast of the Week on March 16 for the
fifth time in 2009 and the ninth time in her
career. Personett led the Nittany Lions to their
second-highest team road score of the season
as Penn State scored a 196.126 to defeat
Arizona. Maryland and Yale. She captured her
seventh individual all-around title of the season
with a 39.425. Personett placed fifth on vault
with a 9.850, third on bars with a 9.825, first on
beam with a 9.850 and first on floor with a
9.900, her ninth first-place floor finish this sea-
son
Brockway Brings It Junior Alexandra Brockway competed in her
first all-around of the year in Penn State’s quad
meet with Rutgers, New Hampshire and
Bridgeport on Feb. 21. Brockway, who was
already scheduled to compete vault, bars and
beam, stepped up to fill in for an injured Rosie
Smith on floor and made her mark on the meet.
She was named the Ann Carr Award winner as
the most inspirational gymnast of the meet, tal-
lying a career-high 39.175 in the all-around,
anchored by a personal-best-tying 9.825 on
beam. She also put up 9.750 on vault, a first-
place 9.875 on bars and a fourth-place 9.725
on floor to finish third in the all-around.
Personett Goes For Two Straight Junior Brandi Personett picked up her sec-
ond straight and eighth career Big Ten
Gymnast of the Week honors on March 2.
Personett earned the Ann Carr Award for the
most inspirational gymnast of the meet, helping
lead Penn State to a first place finish over No.
11 Alabama and No. 19 Ohio State on March 1
after posting a career-best 39.600 in the all-
around. Her score marked the highest all-
around total since the 2003 season. The Katy,
Texas native tallied a first-place 9.900 on vault,
a first-place and career-high 9.925 on bars, a
sixth-place 9.825 on beam and a first-place and
career-high-tying 9.950 on floor en route to the
all-around crown, her fifth individual all-around
title of the season.
On Feb. 23, Personett picked up her fifth
individual all-around title and her seventh top-
three all-around finish with a 39.450 in Penn
State's second quad meet of the year against
New Hampshire, Rutgers and Bridgeport. The
junior earned her sixth vault title with a 9.900.
On bars, Personett finished second with a
9.850 and on beam, she placed fifth with a
9.825. Personett captured her sixth individual
crown on floor with a 9.875.
Southard Makes A Comeback Junior co-captain Allie Southard competed
against Pittsburgh on Jan. 10 at Rec Hall, put-
ting up an eighth-place 9.675 on beam and a
seventh-place 9.575 on floor. Those routines
were the first competitive performances for
Southard since the 2007 season as she suf-
fered a broken back after peeling off bars dur-
ing summer training in 2008. She did compete
in exhibition once during the last meet of the
2008 campaign, posting a 9.675 on beam
against Nebraska, Maryland and Rutgers on
March 21, 2008 and earning the Ann Carr
Award as the most inspirational gymnast of the
meet for her efforts. (Please visit

In the second meet of the season, Southard
continued to make an impact, capturing her first
career collegiate event title at Illinois on Jan.
19, tying for first place on beam with a career-
high 9.850. She then put up the highest beam
score for the Lions this season with a career-
high 9.900 on Feb. 21.
For the year, Southard is averaging a 9.771
on vault (six meets), a 9.747 on beam (nine
meets) and a 9.644 on floor (nine meets). She
missed the Nebraska meet with an injury.

collegiate individual event title at West Virginia
on March 9 when she scored a career-high
9.850 for first on beam.
Bencsko Breaks Through Freshman Whitney Bencsko made a splash
in her first collegiate meet on Jan. 10 against
Pittsburgh at Rec Hall. She finished second in
the all-around with a 39.125 and was named the
Ann Carr Award winner as the most inspirational
gymnast of the meet. Bencsko captured a third-
place 9.800 on vault, a third-place 9.775 on
bars, a fourth-place 9.750 on beam and a third-
place 9.800 on floor.
For the season, she has competed in the all-
around in 11 of 12 meets, finishing in the top
five in nine contests. She is averaging a 9.798
on vault, a 9.539 on bars, a 9.692 on beam and
a 9.815 on floor for an all-around average of
38.839.
Ettl Starts Steady Freshman Natalie Ettl has remained steady
on bars in her nine collegiate meets, averaging
a 9.806 and posting six top-five finishes. She
missed two meets due to injury.
Ettl recorded a career-high and third-place
9.825 in Penn State’s quad meet on Feb. 7. For
her efforts, including returning from multiple
knee surgeries, Ettl was named the Ann Carr
Award winner as the most inspirational gymnast
of the meet. At Michigan on Feb. 13, Ettl posted
another career-high, this time a 9.850, on bars
to claim her first collegiate event title. She also
posted a 9.850 to place fourth against Alabama
and Ohio State on March 1. At the Big Ten
Championships on March 21, she recorded a
sixth-place and career-high-tying 9.850.
Personett Named GOW ForSecond Time In 2009 Junior Brandi Personett was named the Big
Ten Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 9 after cap-
turing all four individual event titles and her
fourth all-around crown of the year. Personett's
unblemished five first-place finishes aided the
Nittany Lions to a season-high team score
196.150 and the team title at the Penn State
Quad. Personett fell just shy of her season high
on vault, scoring a 9.925 for her fourth title of
the year. She posted a first on bars with a
career-high 9.900, on beam she tallied a first-
place 9.825 and recorded a first-place 9.900 on
floor. Personett's all-around score of 39.550 was
just shy of her all-time best score of 39.575 and
was the second-highest all-around score of her
career.
Take Me To Your Leader Juniors Rosie Smith and Allie Southard are
the team captains for the 2009 squad.
Smith Hit Her Stride Junior Rosie Smith was a mainstay in the
Lion lineup this year, competing on vault, bars
and floor in six meets before suffering an injury
on Feb. 21 during warmups. She had five scores
of 9.800 or better on vault for an average of
9.813, she recorded a career-high 9.850 on
bars in Penn State’s quad meet on Feb. 7, and
she had an average of 9.800 on floor, including
a second-place and career-high 9.900 on Jan.
24 versus Michigan State at Rec Hall.
Personett Named Big Ten GOW Junior Brandi Personett was named the Big
Ten Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 26. It was the
fifth career honor for Personett and the first of
the season for a Nittany Lion women’s gymnast.
Personett captured all four event titles, the all-
around crown and the Ann Carr Award as the
most inspirational gymnast of the meet in Penn
State’s win over Michigan State at Rec Hall.
Personett recorded a career-high 39.575, the
seventh-highest individual all-around score in
Penn State history, to take the title. She also
posted a season-high 9.925 on vault, a career-
high-tying 9.875 on bars, a season-high 9.850
on beam and a season-high 9.925 on floor.
BTN Broadcasts The Big Ten Network broadcast two regular-
season meets involving the Nittany Lions in
2009. Penn State faced Michigan on the BTN
on Friday, Feb. 13 in Ann Arbor and the Lions
hosted Ohio State and Alabama on the Network
on Sunday, March 1. The Big Ten Network also
broadcast the 2009 Big Ten Women’s
Gymnastics Championships live from
