• UNBC achieved its highest ranking ever in the annual Maclean’s ranking of Canadian universities, placing second among 21 small universities.
• A national study resulted in UNBC being named a Research University of the Year. Over the past five years, no university in western Canada has seen a greater increase in research funding. Last year, UNBC topped the $100 million mark in research funding to date.
• UNBC started a $15 million bioenergy program that will reduce UNBC’s carbon footprint by up to 85% and serve as a platform for regional R&D.
UNBC in the Northeast
A New NorthIn May, Dawson Creek hosted nearly 70 municipal leaders from across northern BC in a workshop aimed at increasing research on the particular needs and opportunities of the North. The event was the first regional consultation for the New North Foundation, a concept focused on connecting communities and industry to researchers. A feasibility study is currently underway. See www.unbc.ca/new_north for more info.
A New PresidentEven before he was officially on the job, UNBC’s new president visited the Northeast region. George Iwama attended the convocation ceremony in Fort St. John as part of a 3200km tour of northern BC. He is interested in strengthening relationships between the University and the region and plans to be a frequent visitor. Dr. Iwama comes to UNBC from Carleton University and is a specialist in zoology.
