For Rose Higgins, graduation day at the Quesnel campus “was the best day of her life.” An exaggeration? Maybe, but not when you consider Rose’s story. She quit school in grade 6, was married at the age of 14, and had the first of two children at 15. She always planned to go back to school but when her husband had a stroke at the age of 30, she had to focus on taking care of him and the kids. It was UNBC’s new business leadership certificate that finally provided the opportunity she wanted, while also being relevant to her career as manager of the Barkerville campground. “Getting the certificate was the best experience I’ve had and I have a new love of learning,” says Rose. What’s next? She’s exploring her options, but it might be UNBC’s MBA program.

Research Centre NamedThe University’s Quesnel River Research Centre has been named in honour of UNBC’s founding Vice-President Research, a champion of the importance of connecting research to regional development. Dr. Max Blouw worked with the community of Likely and others in the region to have the former federal fisheries research station transferred to UNBC. The facility now supports research on fish ecology, the sustainability of river systems, and climate change. Dr. Blouw is currently the President of Wilfrid Laurier University.

A New PresidentEven before he was officially on the job, UNBC’s new president visited the North Cariboo region. George Iwama attended the convocation ceremony in Quesnel as part of a 3200km tour of northern BC. He is interested in strengthening relationships between the University and the region and plans to be a frequent visitor. Dr. Iwama comes to UNBC from Carleton University and is a specialist in zoology.

UNBC Milestones: 2008/09• UNBC achieved its highest

ranking ever in the annual Maclean’s ranking of Canadian universities, placing second among 21 small universities.

• A national study resulted in UNBC being named a Research University of the Year. Over the past five years, no university in western Canada has seen a greater increase in research funding. Last year, UNBC topped the $100 million mark in research funding to date.

• UNBC started a $15 million bioenergy program that will reduce UNBC’s carbon footprint by up to 85% and serve as a platform for regional R&D.

UNBC to Enhance Business SkillsUNBC is part of a new federally funded program that will seek to expand business opportunities for local First Nations. The program will see business development services expanded in communities and an increased number of local courses that will lead either to a degree or to certification of students as Native Development Officers. The program will begin this fall.
