Welcome to the Fair

Dear European Career Fair participants,

As the organizers of this event, we would like to extend a warm welcome to you!

This thirteenth edition of the fair builds on the foundation laid down in previous years. As a result, the fair continues to attract both high quality employers and outstanding candidates, despite the recent economic turmoil. In times of global financial hardship, it is all the more important to find the right people for the right places, for which a fluid job market is very important. The ECF has proven valuable to achieve this fluid-ity, thanks to its long standing reputation in bridging the Atlantic by connecting the best candidates from the US with the top-echelon of employers from Europe. In addition to our predecessors, we are indebted to our partners. We value our collaboration with the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives in organizing the fair. Furthermore, we are proud to partner with the European Commission for the third year in a row. Our synergistic efforts have led to a strong increase in the number of non-profit employers from academia and research, underscoring that the potential of the European job market does not merely lie in an advanced, innovative and globally oriented industry. Our alliance with the IKOM career fair in Munich, Germany, allows us to improve the career fair even further based on our mutual experiences.This year, we welcome a number of affiliated activities to the ECF, such as a panel discussion on entre-preneurship in Europe and a workshop on transatlantic careers sponsored by Sciencecareers. In addi-tion, we see that several countries wish to profile themselves beyond the fair in separate information sessions. We believe that these activities, and the additional resources provided by Nature Network Boston and Sciencecareers that are accessible through our website, will prove valuable for all attendants of the event.The European Career Fair continues to be the largest event in the US with a clear focus on Europe. This year, we attracted over 110 employers and received more than 4100 resumes from candidates. We expect many hundreds of interviews to be conducted on the second and third day of the fair. All this, together with the logistics of the fair, would not be possible without the dedication of our team of highly motivated volunteers, all of which have a full time job or study next to ECF. They are essential to the success of the fair, and we are grateful for their efforts.

European innovation and entrepeneurship workshopA workshop to point out the strengths and opportunities of the innova-tive and entrepreneurial European countries, followed by an informal lunch. Registration is required.

Employer exhibitionEmployer representatives meet face-to-face with candidates and will invite exceptional candidates for interviews on Sunday and Monday. Candidates are encouraged to bring their resumes.

Employer presentationsEmployers give informal 30-minute presentations, that are an excellent opportunity to get to know more about employers of interest. The sched-ule of presentations will be posted at the fair, and will be available on handouts. Each presentation will be announced at the fair.

Scheduled interviews On Sunday and Monday employer representatives will meet with pro-spective employees preselected on the basis of their submitted resumes, as well as highly-qualified candidates identified at the fair. The ECF team will coordinate the interviews that take place in interview booths and rooms at the hotel and invited candidates are required to check in at the information desk. By invitation only.

MIT European ClubThe MIT European Club would like to extend a warm welcome to our 13th European Career Fair! We are a student-run organization affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology having a membership of nearly 3,000 people who come from almost every part of the world and share a common interest in Europe. Over the years, the MIT European Club has established itself as a reference point for many European scholars, academics, and professionals coming to the Boston area. It is one of MIT’s most active and diverse student groups, and organizes activities ranging from athletics to cultural events, along with excursion for hiking and whitewater rafting in the summer, foliage tours in the autumn, and skiing in the winter. Our staple social event is our weekly Thursday Pub Tour, when we gather at a local pub to mingle and chat.

The European Career Fair is our most visible event on campus. It is the main activity we hold to further the professional development of our members and people interested in working in Europe. The fair is the largest of its kind in the United States, providing domestic, foreign, and multinational companies access to some of the top talents from the world’s most renowned academic institutions. It is not only designed to provide information and personal contact with recruiters, but also to allow them to schedule job interviews on the days immediately following the fair.

All the events sponsored by the Club are organized by our members, who volunteer their time, ideas, drive, and skills. Their dedication and efforts are essential for the club’s success and at the core of what we do. In order to remain dynamic and active, we are constantly seeking new members to assist in running the Club. We encourage you to join us, come to the planning meetings, and above all, have fun participating in our activities!

MIT International Science and Technology InitiativesMISTI is one of MIT’s leading initiators of international collaborations. Through its France, Germany, Italy and Spain Programs, MISTI has established strong partnerships with many of Europe’s leading companies and research centers. We welcome the participants in the 2009 European Career Fair as partners in the pursuit of this common mission.

InternshipsHosting an MIT intern is one of the most effective ways for companies and research labs to establish a direct link with MIT. To our students, these internships offer an opportunity to experience first-hand other work and research cultures. Each year, MISTI places over 300 MIT students in three to 12-month internships abroad. Over half of these internships take place in Europe.

International Seed Funds MISTI also supports MIT faculty and their European counterparts in cross-border collabo-rations with research institutes and universities in France, Italy and Spain.

The 7th Research Framework Programme

The seventh European Research Framework Programme will provide funding of more than 54 billion Euro over 7 years (2007-2013) to increase Europe's growth and competitiveness, recognizing that knowledge is Europe's greatest resource.

FP-7 consists of four specific programmes:

COOPERATION – to fund collaborative projects between research teams.

IDEAS – to fund excellent individual researchers in cutting-edge frontier science through European-level competition. Grants for starting independent researchers as well as experienced researchers. Applicants may be of any nationality. The work must be carried out in Europe.

PEOPLE – to fund training, mobility and career development of researchers. Includes fellowships for Europeans and non-Europeans to work in Europe and grants for Europeans returning to Europe after 3 years abroad.

CAPACITIES – to enhance research and innovation capacity throughout Europe.

European Research Council

The European Research Council The European Research Council (ERC) is a newly-created European funding initiative, designed to support the best scientists, engineers and scholars in Europe.

The ERC's mandate is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-initiated frontier research across all fields of research, on the basis of scientific excellence.

Grants are awarded and managed according to simple procedures that maintain the focus on excellence, encourage creativity and combine flexibility with accountability.

The ERC, which is established by the European Commission and funded through the EU’s Seventh Research Framework Programme with a budget of € 7.51 bn for 7 years (2007-2013), complements other funding schemes in Europe, such as those of research funding agencies operating at the national level and those within the EU’s Seventh Research Framework Programme.

The ERC consists of a Scientific Council and a Dedicated Implementation Structure. It operates under conditions of autonomy and integrity, guaranteed by the European Commission, to which it is accountable.

ERC Grant Schemes

What kinds of ERC grants are available?

Two types of ERC grants are available to support researchers in carrying out frontier research projects:

ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant (ERC Starting Grant)

The ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant (ERC Starting Grant) aims to provide adequate support to researchers at the stage at which they are intending to establish or have already established an independent research team or, depending on the field, developing an independent research programme. Researchers applying for an ERC Starting Grant must be able to demonstrate their potential to perform world-class research.

ERC Starting Grants allow the most promising (young) investigators to make the transition from working under a supervisor to an independent research leader at an early stage in their research career.

The ERC Starting Grants may last up to five years and provide a total of up to 2.0 million for a five-year grant.

2.1.2 ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (ERC Advanced Grant)

The ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (ERC Advanced Grant) aims to encourage and support excellent, innovative and investigator-initiated research projects carried out by leading investigators. This funding scheme complements the ERC Starting Grant scheme by targeting researchers who have already established themselves as being independent research leaders in their own right.

ERC Advanced Grants allow exceptional established research leaders in science, engineering and scholarship to pursue frontier research of their choice.

The ERC Advanced Grants may last up to five years and provide a total of up to €3.5 million for a five-year-grant.

At Vivia Biotech we focus on the discovery of new indications for existing drugs for rare diseases, in the most direct way possible: analyzing with a pioneering technology the effect of thousands of existing drugs directly on a patient's standard blood or bone marrow sample within 48 hours from its extraction.

Initially focused on haematological cancers, we are expanding our research to other diseases. The BioMedical Materials program (BMM) is a public-private partnership of academia, industry, and the Dutch government that focuses on research in the field of biomedical materials. This is based on the vision that biomedical materials will play a key role in achieving medical breakthroughs that will enable the functional repair and regeneration of tissue, and, in the future, possibly organs. BMM will create opportunities for education and careers in academia and industry for highly talented professionals, post-docs and PhD students.

Five research areas have been defined within BMM, each focusing on the research and development of materials and their therapeutic application:

• Biomaterials for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and the functional restoration and regeneration of arteries, heart valves and myocardial tissue.

• Biomaterials for the functional restoration of degenerative musculoskeletal tissues, in particular spine and articular joints.

• Biomaterials for the prevention and treatment of kidney dysfunction, including reduction, refinement and replacement of haemodialysis therapy.

• Coatings for (implantable) medical devices, to prevent and/or treat inflammation and infections, and/or to improve cardiovascular and musculoskeletal interventions and therapies.

• Biomaterials for the targeted drug delivery in oncology and controlled drug release in chronic diseases.

These research areas have been selected on the basis of their impact on public healthcare and on the economic and societal relevance. All research projects are supported by specific competences in materials research, cell biology and clinical application. Each project comprises a multidisciplinary research effort, including clinical researchers, materials scientists, (cell) biologists, technologists, etc. Partners throughout the value chain will work closely together to ensure that innovations will find application in a clinical setting.

What is the CEA? The CEA is a national research institution in France that

conducts cutting edge research for the advancement of

non-greenhouse-emitting energy sources, including

nuclear energy; defence and global security; and

information and health technologies. Within these three

fields, the CEA relies heavily on its excellent activity in

fundamental research. As a result, the CEA is at the heart

of the 21st century’s science and technology challenges.

What are CEA’s major activities in fundamental research? Fundamental research is the root of the CEA’s scientific

expertise, leading to the development of a remarkable

number of new concepts and technological breakthroughs.

The fundamental research divisions focus their scientific

activity (in physics, chemistry, materials science, biology)

on four main areas: climate and environmental sciences,

fusion energy, fundamental laws of the Universe and

nanoscience and condensed matter. More and more

breakthroughs resulting from fundamental research in

these areas are transferred to applied research for the

development of new technologies. In addition to the

development of new technologies, the CEA continuously

publishes results in the leading scientific journals and

participates in all of the major international research

conferences.

What are CEA’s main technological goals? Energy

With regards to energy, France favors a sustainable energy

“mix” that includes nuclear energy as its basis, as well as

renewable energy sources such as hydropower and new

energy technologies. In this general context and in the

framework of international cooperation, the CEA conducts

research for the development of future nuclear energies.

These include both fission, and the creation of a 4th

generation reactor prototype, as well as fusion, and the

ITER project.

The CEA also works on the development of new energy

technologies with the goal of broadening the “mix” of

energy sources that do not emit greenhouse gases. These

include biomass and hydrogen production, fuel cells, solar

photovoltaics, electricity storage, and new components and

systems that consume less energy. This research is the

subject of strong partnerships with industry and other

national and international research organisations.

In the energy field, fundamental research is conducted in

order to understand the physical phenomena at the root of

alternative energy technologies, as well as the impact of

human activities on climate change. The CEA also strives

to obtain the data necessary to evaluate the performance of

waste incineration in innovative nuclear systems and to

attempt to answer major questions regarding matter and

the universe.

Information and Health Technologies

The CEA has access to high-level technological research

in the micro- and nanotechnology sectors with, for

example, the influential role of the MINATEC

international nanotechnology cluster. There are several

prospects for these strongly emerging technologies

including telecommunications, wireless networks, chip

cards, embedded systems, sensors, signal processing and

virtual reality. The applications cover the automotive,

aeronautic, defence and health sectors, among others.

The CEA also endeavors to help the health sector benefit

from technological advances in the nuclear field. By

contributing innovative concepts and tools, CEA’s

research is forging new paths both in diagnostics and

therapeutics with the development of biochips, functional

and structural genomics, and biomolecular engineering.

One particular example is the work done in brain

neuroimaging thanks to the high-performance MRI at the

new NEUROSPIN platform in Saclay.

Defense and Gloval Security

The CEA’s mission is to guarantee, in the long-run, the

reliability and security of various components of nuclear

deterrence, which since the definitive end of testing, rely

on simulation programs. Within this objective, the CEA is

developing new physical models and has acquired

computational and experimental research tools such as the

TERA supercomputer, the AIRIX radiographic machine

and the Megajoule Laser. The CEA also contributes, at the

national and international level, to the improvement of

global security by the means of specific technological

research projects in the nuclear, radiological, biological

and chemical domains.

What is CEA’s mission at the European Career Fair? The CEA is looking to meet young and talented students

and scientists looking to expand their research experience

to international frontiers. A variety of research

opportunities are being offered ranging from short-term

internships to post-doctoral fellowships and visiting

scientists positions. The CEA maintains a strong interest in

attracting undergraduates looking to spend a summer or a

semester abroad to develop their own research project.

Such experiences are highly valued by CEA’s research

programs as they often evolve into longer-term

collaborations or doctoral thesis opportunities.

Undergraduate students of all physical science and

engineering backgrounds are thus encouraged to meet and

discuss with the CEA representatives at the European

Career Fair. Furthermore, the CEA continuously looks to

attract talented international candidates for post-doctoral or

young research scientist positions. The European Career

Fair is therefore the perfect occasion to meet young

scientists, discuss their research ambitions, and propose

unique career opportunities in France.

Cluster of Excellence “Engineering of Advanced Materials” Preferred backgrounds

Academic, Research Institute

The Cluster of Excellence ‘Engineering of Advanced Materials – Hierarchical Structure Formation for Functional Devices (EAM)” is the only cluster in Germany to focus on material sciences and processes. Its work centers on the fundamental and applied aspects of designing and creating novel high-performance materials. The EAM was established in November 2007 within the framework of the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments.

The integrated Graduate School: “Advanced Materials and Processes” is organized in eight interdisciplinary classes according to research areas.

The CTMM bundles academic and industrial molecular medicine expertise. Increasing insight is obtained into specific processes at the cellular and molecular level, which leads to the origin of diseases, but also provides clues for potential cures. The Office for Science and Technology of the Embassy of France is a multidisciplinary team of 36 faculty members, senior researchers and staff scientists under the leadership of a science counselor who reports directly to the Ambassador. The Office is distributed between headquarters at the French Embassy in Washington, DC, and 5 satellites offices in the Boston (MA), Chicago, (IL), Houston, (TX), San Francisco (CA) and Los Angeles consulates. The role of the Office incorporates three strategic missions:

• To monitor advances in science and technology to stakeholders, decision makers and scientists. • To establish and/or strengthen partnerships in science and technology.• To promote exchanges of students, researchers and entrepreneurs.

Every year, the Office for Science and Technology develops programs in the following areas: information technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, life sciences, nanotechnologies, agronomy, environment and sustainable development. The Office organizes major bilateral events such as an innovation day and several cultural events dedicated to science as a basis for mutual understanding.

The action of the Office for Science and Technology is strongly coordinated with other diplomatic offices, such as the Trade Department or the Cultural Services. This situation allows the Office for Science and Technology to efficiently handle the many economic and social implications of today’s science and technology.

The German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG) is Germany’s central, self-governing research funding organization that serves all branches of science and the humanities by funding research projects and facilitating collaboration among researchers.

The DFG portfolio of programs offers various possibilities for funding of either individual researchers – among them programs with a special focus on young researchers – or groups of researchers in coordinated programs. Not only German nationals can be funded by the DFG, but also researchers from abroad, if they want to carry out their research in Germany and assure that they plan to carry on their research career in Germany.

The »FUTURE OCEAN« cluster of excellence started in 2006. This clusterinvestigates the changes in the oceans including risks and opportunities. Thescope of research covers fields such as ocean acidification, marine geneticand microbiological resources and gas hydrates as possible energy sourcesof the future. These fields are to be subjected to integrative, comprehensiveand multidisciplinary investigations using marine biological, economic, legaland medical approaches as well as innovative technologies in oceanic observa-tion. Cologne Graduate School for Biological Sciences In May 2006, the University of Cologne established an international, broadly based graduate school in the biological sciences. Centred on the molecular analysis of biological processes, the scientific base of the programme is broad, providing students with opportunities for training in fields ranging from ecology and evolution to medicine, and including all of the major microbial, plant and animal model

organisms. Based on a phase of systematic experimentation in previous, small-scale graduate programmes in which we have developed and tested methods for an improved graduate training, we developed a structured programme, building on the extensive experience and infrastructure from the existing programmes. These are partially unified and a core programme is available for graduate students in all areas of biology.

The GSfBS is supported by a selective, international English language Fast Track Masters/Doctoral Programme, which is in place since winter semester 2006/07. The School fosters the excellent scientific connections between research groups in the medical and basic science research institutes in the University the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIZ) and exploits them for the benefit of the graduates.

The GSfBS also serves as an umbrella for specialized graduate programmes such as the North Rhine Westphalia International Graduate School from Embryo to old Age, development health and disease IGSDHD (see ad on next page), the International Max Planck Research School ‘Molecular Plant Sciences’ (IMPRS) at the MPIZ, The Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Programme Molecular Medicine (IP MM) and the Ph.D. Programme in Pharmacology.

University of St.Gallen (HSG)

The University of St.Gallen (HSG), Switzerland, was founded as a “Business Academy” in 1898 – in the heyday of St.Gallen embroidery – and offered its first lectures in 1899. The HSG continues to pursue the goal of providing its more than 6000 students with a practice-oriented education, guided by an integrative view of business, economics, law and social sciences.

Research Research at the University of St.Gallen is centered around the 30 institutes and research centers, which are an integral part of the University. The directors of the institutes double as HSG professors. Bringing theory and practice together, the institutes provide an important input for teaching at the University and play a significant role in furthering the careers of young academics.

InternationalityThe University of St.Gallen (HSG) sets great store by international students and faculty, as well as by the international orientation of the teaching it provides. Students are encouraged to take advantage of our network that consists of more than 150 partner universities for student exchange.

SimTech is an association of experts for funda-mental research. The cluster focuses on the multidimensional analysis of any kind of material, ranging from human tissue via technical components up to rock formations, and on material modelling.
