THE FARMERS’ MUSEUM HEIRLOOM SEED PROJECT

The Farmers' Museum will again offer interested 4-H members new varieties of heirloom seeds to grow. As in the past, 4-H members are required to grow the seeds and then exhibit the mature specimens at the Farmers’ Museum Annual Autumn Harvest Festival in September. Specimens exhibited at Harvest Festival will be judged and given awards.

Watch for complete details regarding ordering and specific offerings in the February 4-H Facts Orders will be due by February 19.

4-H TEEN WINTER WEEKEND

Lewis County 4-H may once again be sponsoring Teen Winter Weekend, February 12-14 at Camp Oswegatchie in Croghan. Teen Winter Weekend is open to teens ages 13 and up in grades 7 through 12. We are waiting for complete details regarding the cost and program. Each county can only send 10 participants, so get your registration in today.

Contact the 4-H Office for an application. You must provide a chaperone. Applications and money deadline is January 22. Call the 4-H Office to get more information on this program or to reserve your place.



THE FARMERS' MUSEUM CANDLELIGHT EVENING

DECEMBER 20, 2009 - 3:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M.

4-H clubs or families interested in caroling in this holiday event should please call or e-mail Meg Preston at (607) 547-1452 or [email protected] before December 5th if you would like to participate in this traditional holiday event!! We encourage your participation. Sign up to sing for either a 1/2 or an hour.

4-H CAPITAL DAYS, ALBANY, NY

FEBRUARY 28 - MARCH 2, 2010

This trip is for two 4-H'ers who are at least sophomores in high school. Delegates from each NYS county meet in Albany for this two day government awareness program.

The goals are: to achieve a better understanding of the scope of NYS government; to create an awareness of career opportunities in state government; to gain a better understanding of our county as it relates to NYS; to provide the opportunity for delegates to meet with their legislators and other 4-H’ers from across NY State.

Applications for this event are due to the 4-H office by January 8. So don’t delay, call or email JoAnn ([email protected]) at the 4-H office today for your application. The cost of the trip will be $50 per participant which is due with the application. The 4-H office covers the remainder of the cost.

TRACTOR SAFETY DAY

We will be offering a Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program to youth and adults 14 and over on April 20-22. We invite and encourage all farm and non farm youth and adults who will be working on or around machinery to participate in the program. Watch for the February-March 4-H Facts Newsletter for more details.

VET SCIENCE PROGRAM In cooperation with Oneida County 4-H will be offering vet science program. The program will be based on level one. 4-Her’s who are in 3rd–5th grade are eligible to participate. Watch the February-March 4-H Facts for more details.

The District Horse Bonanza Contest (Horse Bowl, Hippology and Communications) will be held on Saturday, March 13th in Morrisville.

We are still waiting to hear if there are any youth interested in participating in Dairy Quiz Bowl. If you are interested in participating or volunteering to coach a team, call Jenn ASAP so practices can be set up.

The District Dairy Bowl Contest will be held on Saturday, March 20th location TBD.

4-H HORSE AND DAIRY QUIZ BOWL

HOLIDAY BOOK TREE Cornell Cooperative Extension of Herkimer County will be collecting books again this holiday season for needy children throughout the area. These books will be donated to the Even Start Program. New or “gently-used” books for young children are requested. If you have any books that you would be willing to donate, please drop them off at the Cornell Cooperative Extension office at 5657 State Route 5 in East Herkimer during business hours, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

2010 NYS 4-H FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Eligibility. The NYS 4-H Foundation and generous sponsors are pleased to provide scholarships to members for their accomplishments as a result of 4-H experiences, and to support future educational goals.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicant must be eligible for 4-H enrollment. Youth who have reached their nineteenth birthday before January 1, 2010 are not eligible to apply for scholarships.

Applicant must have been a 4-H member in New York State, or participated in a Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Program for at least one year.

Applicant must be enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited university, college or technical school.

Applicant must have a current grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale unless otherwise stated for specific scholarships.

Applications can be sent electronically as an attached file to [email protected] or mailed to NYS 4-H Foundation, 220 Herald Place, Syracuse, NY 13202. The application and all required materials are to be received NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 15. Notification of scholarship awards will be made in June. Distribution Procedures. Awards will be distributed upon completion of the first semester of enrollment at the university, college or technical school.

4-H FOOD & NUTRITION/HERO PACKS WORKSHOPS

Mid Winter Recess - Another whole week off from school! If you’re looking for something to do inside, why not join other 4-H’ers from across Herkimer County for the day?

Food and Nutrition Workshop

We have many food and nutrition projects to choose from: Muffins and More, Pyramid of Snacks, Kitchen Science for Kids, Cooking with the Three Sisters, Healthy Heart Snack Choices, In-Touch Science: Foods & Fabrics, Six Easy Bites, Food Mysteries, Tasty Tidbits, You’re the Chef, Foodworks, Shopping for Food & Making Meals In Minutes, Preparing Foods & Planning Menus, Making Bag Lunches, Snacks & Desserts, etc.

What we need now is a volunteer who is willing to facilitate this workshop. The 4-H office will provide all the materials. If you would like to help plan and facilitate this workshop, please call JoAnn by the January 15th deadline.

Operation Military Kids Hero Packs Workshop

This session will consist of a community service project of filling backpacks with comfort items to be given to children who have family members deployed.

Adults or teen leaders to help supervise are urgently needed. Exact details regarding these workshops will be determined by the volunteers who offer to assist with the planning. If we do not get enough signed up by the deadline, only those who have registered will be notified of any changes in these plans.

Pre-registration is required by January 15. Due to planning requirements, only those pre-registered by this date will be allowed to attend.

Unfortunately our Annual 4-H Member/ Volunteer Recognition Event was cancelled due to lack of registration. NY STATE FAIR On September 7, members of the Little Falls Friends 4-H Club staffed the Herkimer County booth at State Fair. They interacted with the general public making “squeezies” from the Simple Gifts project curriculum.

WINTER WEATHER Herkimer County is such a wonderful place to live, we offer the following information regarding Cornell Cooperative Extension and 4-H.

1. If a meeting is going to be cancelled, we will call the following radio stations to announce the cancellation: WLFH 1230 AM; WIBX 95.5 FM.

2. Sometimes the weather is bad in one part of the county and not in others. Use your own judgment when deciding to travel.

3. Sometimes it’s too late to cancel a meeting when the weather turns bad, again use your own judgment.

4. If the Cornell Cooperative Extension office closes, evening meetings are cancelled.

5. If you decide not to travel to a meeting, please call the office ahead of time if possible.

If the Herkimer County Office Building is closed, the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office will also be closed. Canceling and trying to reschedule meetings is very difficult, so if at all possible, meetings will be held. Again, use your own judgment and do not travel if you do not feel safe.

The Barnyard Buddies 4-H Club of West Winfield promoted National 4-H Week on October 2nd with this display located at the corner of North Street and Stone Road in West Winfield.

The Cow Belles 4-H Club met at the Jordanville Library on September 26, 2009 to prepare for an upcoming book sale to be held at the library on October 10th. The members of the 4-H Club, Kalyna and Alexandra Rogers, Evona Mower, Natasha Mower, Michayla Mower and Wasayla Mower, Milleta Oldick, Kristy Hammont, Tess Hitchcock, Ellen Perkins, and Susie Miner contributed their efforts to prepare the discarded books for the Librarian Jacquie Empey. They separated the books into fiction, nonfiction, and children’s categories. Each 4-H’er happily participated and earned community service hours and participated in National 4-H Week.

The Fields of Clover 4-H Club met on Sunday October 4th at the Ainslie Farm in West Winfield to set up their display for National 4-H week. They painted four round bales in the shape of a clover and decorated with cornstalks and a pumpkin. In addition, they had a sign using the slogan “The Power of Youth” with the members’ handprints on it. This display was located on the corners of Stone Road and N. Winfield Road in West Winfield.

The Foxy Trotters 4-H Club got together and decorated the gazebo at the "Village Green" in West Winfield in honor of National 4-H Week. We had our 1st business meeting of the month and are looking forward to a fun-packed year.

The Little Falls 4-H Friends 4-H Club visited the City of Little Falls Mayor and the Town of Manheim Supervisor on Wednesday, October 7 where they received proclamations declaring 4-H Week in their city and town.

Twenty-seven Herkimer County 4-H members from six 4-H clubs recently attended the countywide 4-H Officer Training workshop held at the Herkimer Reformed Church. 4-H clubs have elected their officers for the 2009-10 4-H year and this workshop provides them with the proper initial training to help ensure a successful 4-H experience. These sessions better prepare the 4-H club officers to conduct more efficient meetings. Training young people to understand their role in a group and operate an effective meeting according to parliamentary procedure is an investment in life long skill development. This helps them to become cont r ibu t ing members o f soc ie ty . On October 4, all 11 members of the Fields of Clover 4-H Club met at the Ainslie farm to decorate the National 4-H week display. They will meet on October 12th for a tour of the Windy Hill Orchard and farm stand. New year forms were filled out and the following officers were elected: President McCaylia Plungis, VicePresident Lily Land, Secretary Jenee Lusby, Song/Recreation Leader Britney Tucker, Treasurer McKenzie Plungis, News Reporters Claire and Leah Livingston.

During our meeting in September, the Little Falls Friends filled out yearly report forms to hand in to 4-H office; discussed summer 4-H activities including Herkimer County Fair, and New York State Fair; elected officers: President, Dylan Hapeman; Vice President, Mary Kathryn Connolly; Secretary, Philip Mosher; Treasurer, Joseph Bacher; News Reporter, Mathew Treusdell; Song and Recreation Leader,

Abigail Mosher. Other members in our club are Laurel Brodkord, Hilary Creater, Shelby Creater, Sarah Piana, Allison Lee, Claire Connolly, Keegan Connolly and Warren Hapeman. We also planned activities for National 4-H week. We discussed cheese sales, attending the Leadership Training workshop in November and the importance of signing up by the deadline for this and all future 4-H activities.
