Income exceeded expenses by $197,742.58. A portion of this additional income was applied to 2008 deficit spending, while most was received from grant funds for designated 2010 project expenses.

From the Director

2009 was a hard year, and a good year, for the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute. It was hard financially. At PCEI, we cut budgets to respond to a decrease in grants that we began to see in 2008. By being frugal and with an incredible outpouring of community support, we were able to retain all staff and keep doing the good work you expect from PCEI.

It was good for the environment and for community building. A surge in environmental awareness and concern has led people to change their habits to include more biking and walking, waste use and recycling, and energy use. The costs associated with non-sustainable habits has surely been a factor! And the hard times financially have brought people together to work together for the basics of living and of living sustainably.

The high point of the year for me was seeing so many people stretch their means to support the sustainability of PCEI’s work for the community and the environment. It is gratifying to be able to report that our annual fund reached $152,246.47—enough to cover the decline in grants and weather the financial storm. With foundation portfolios recovering and grant opportunities beginning to reach into the private sector, PCEI is well positioned for a long and productive future.

Income exceeded expenses by $197,742.58. A portion of this additional income was applied to 2008 deficit spending, while most was received from grant funds for designated 2010 project expenses.

From the Director

2009 was a hard year, and a good year, for the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute. It was hard financially. At PCEI, we cut budgets to respond to a decrease in grants that we began to see in 2008. By being frugal and with an incredible outpouring of community support, we were able to retain all staff and keep doing the good work you expect from PCEI.

It was good for the environment and for community building. A surge in environmental awareness and concern has led people to change their habits to include more biking and walking, waste use and recycling, and energy use. The costs associated with non-sustainable habits has surely been a factor! And the hard times financially have brought people together to work together for the basics of living and of living sustainably.

The high point of the year for me was seeing so many people stretch their means to support the sustainability of PCEI’s work for the community and the environment. It is gratifying to be able to report that our annual fund reached $152,246.47—enough to cover the decline in grants and weather the financial storm. With foundation portfolios recovering and grant opportunities beginning to reach into the private sector, PCEI is well positioned for a long and productive future.
