president’s message ı thomas nondahl 2009 Annual Meeting, ECCE, and You M any of us have grown familiar with the for- mat of the Industry Applications Society (IAS) Annual Meeting: tutorials on Sunday, nearly 400 techni- cal paper presentations on Monday through Thursday, the awards lun- cheon on Tuesday, and the president’s banquet on Wednesday. It is a format that has worked well for us for more than 30 years. However, the 2009 IAS Annual Meeting will be much differ- ent. One change is that tutorials will be moved to Wednesdays and Thurs- days. Another change is that four of the largest technical committees will not be presenting papers at the 2009 IAS Annual Meeting. The Electric Ma- chines, Industrial Drives, Industrial Power Converter, and the Power Elec- tronic Devices and Components Com- mittees will be presenting their papers at the first-ever Energy Conversion Conference and Exposition (ECCE) 2009. IAS and the IEEE Power Electronics Society are joint sponsors of ECCE 2009. ECCE will combine portions of the traditional IAS Annual Meeting with Power Electronics Specialists Conference (PESC) to form North America’s premier conference in electrical power conversion, components, and electrical machines. The combination of these two groups will provide a more focused venue for researchers and practitioners to present and discuss the advancements in power- conversion technology and control. ECCE 2009 will be held in San Diego, California, on 20–24 Septem- ber 2009. The preliminary schedule shows six half-day tutorials on Sunday, a plenary session on Monday, technical paper presentations from Monday to Thursday, poster sessions on Monday and Wednesday, and an exhibition with 50 vendors at various times on Monday through Wednesday. The general chair of the meeting is Tomy Sebastian, a very ac- tive IAS member, whose technical con- tributions and serv- ice are well known to many of us. The organizing commit- tee estimates that there will be 1,000 attendees and 600 papers presented at the meeting. Ab- stracts and digests of papers for ECCE are due on 15 Jan- uary 2009. More detailed information about the meeting can be found on p. 79 and on the conference Web site at www.ecce2009.org. The IAS Annual Meeting will be held in Houston, Texas, on 4–9 October 2009. There will be ten IAS technical committees participating at the meet- ing: Industrial Automation and Con- trol, Industrial Lighting and Displays, Appliance Industry, Metal Industry, Mining Industry, and five committees in the Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Department. It is antici- pated that there will be approximately 250 attendees, 200 technical papers, and some ten tutorials. Abstracts are due on 15 January 2009. The format for the Annual Meeting will be different from previous meet- ings. The preliminary schedule shows technical sessions Monday through Wednesday and tutorials on Wednes- day and Thursday. One area of expansion for the new Annual Meeting will be in the area of tutorials, with both invited and submitted tutorials, for a better focus on continuing educa- tion for the practic- ing engineer. The annual meeting will also include both a formal banquet and a ceremony for pre- sentation of major awards; details of how these will be arranged during the week will be avail- able later. Bruno Lequesne, the IAS president-elect, will be the general chair. For more information, see p. 78 and the conference Web site at www.ieee. org/ias2009. Prospective authors and attendees need to be aware of the changes in the IAS Annual Meeting in 2009. Authors who have traditionally sub- mitted papers to the IAS Annual Meeting will need to consult the Call for Papers on the Annual Meeting and ECCE Web sites to be sure that they send papers to the proper venue. Those of us who have attended the IAS Annual Meeting for many years will have to check the content and schedule carefully before we make our travel plans. It will also be of big help if we tell our coworkers and colleagues about the new format at every oppor- tunity. This is a big change and suc- cess is not guaranteed. With your help, we can make this transition a smooth one.
