Opportunity: a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something. In May 2002, After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles began offering out-of-school time programs and services. Starting with just 93 students, to now serving 3,000 students per day throughout L.A. County, we have always been committed to providing unique opportunities necessary for our students to be inspired to greater heights; essential to enlightening their young minds; and needed to educate their thoughts and outlook on the future. Over the past nine years, we have helped transform the attitude of tens of thousands of youth towards the learning process; toward their city; toward their schools and communities; and most importantly, towards themselves! Celebrate with us as we witness our All-Stars not just do something, but do something great! All through the power of opportunity!

Founded by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2002, After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles (ASAS-LA) is a leading after-school program provider whose programs educate, enlighten and inspire thousands of elementary, middle and high school students each day. Activities are centered around health, fitness and nutrition; the visual and performing arts; and youth leadership and community service learning.

The programs educate, enlighten and inspire young people by providing dynamic and exciting opportunities for success, while cultivating self-esteem, leadership and respect to help build healthier communities.

In partnership with the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Unified School District, Montebello Unified School District, Mountain View School District, and charter school organizations such as Value Schools, The Alliance for College-Ready Public Schools, and other independent charter schools, the program offers students from low-income families comprehensive out-of-school-time educational programs that are inspiring and fun during the critical hours of 3 p.m and 6 p.m. Deemed the “Danger Zone” by law enforcement, this is a three hour time period where youths are more likely to join gangs, or experiment with drugs, alcohol and sex.

Since its inception, After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles has launched programs in 21 schools in at-risk communities within LA County, with 10,000 students enrolled.

A message from the Chairman of the Boardremember how opportunity changed your life?

Dear Friends and Supporters,

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” the opening line of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, describes the tumultuous times we all experienced last year. In the 2008-2009 school year, After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles served a record 16 schools and had 10,000 students enrolled in the program. Along with their daily academic tutoring and engaging activities, our students also had the opportunity to ride in Ferraris, perform at extreme sports events, and hang with NBA champions Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol. On the other hand, the toughest economy many of us have experienced is forcing our organization to cut budgets and evaluate programs at a time when kids need after-school activities the most. What we choose to do today will resonate throughout the 2009-2010 school year, and for many of our students, for the rest of their lives. To continue doing what we have been doing to make the hours of 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. a highlight for our students rather than the riskiest hours of the day, we stand here together to accomplish our mission: to educate, enlighten, and inspire the lives of future generations. The challenges will be great as we enter the next decade, but the opportunities are even greater. On behalf of the Board of After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles, I look forward to strengthening our organization and making sure we provide the best after-school programs to the youth of the Los Angeles community.

Warmly,

Sabrina KayChairman of the BoardAfter-School All-Stars, Los Angeles

Research on youth development suggests that after-school programs provide a valuable context

for children to initiate positive relationships with adults.

These interactions provide a strong foundation of knowledge and support that encourages children to explore their communities, identify their own contribution to society

and pursue positive relationships with others.

handson!After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles provides learning opportunities that complement the regular school day. We provide these learning opportunities through classes and activities deemed “Countdown” and “Blast-Off“.

Countdown classes provide students with learning opportunities through homework support, while offering students additional cognitively stimulating activities.

Blast-Off classes provide students with learning experiences by way of enriching and engaging extracurricular activities that often times extend beyond the regular classroom.

a year full of great opportunities! In the summer of 2010, five All-Star students had the phenomenal opportunity to travel to Europe! Made possible through a partnership with Liberty Education Tours and the Reagan Legacy Foundation, the students were selected for the trip through their educational accomplishments at school and achievements with the ASAS-LA program. The All-Stars joined 13 other high school students from across the nation in the opportunity to study the words and actions of President Ronald Reagan and other great leaders while visiting sites significant to the history of freedom and democracy in the United States and central Europe. The Liberty Education Tour kicked off June 19 when the American high school students traveled to the Czech Republic and Germany to explore the history of Communism and the events that led to its demise. In Germany, students visited the Brandenburg Gate where President Reagan delivered his famous “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall” speech in 1987, the Holocaust Memorial, the Jewish Museum, Stasi Prison and Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Students visited historical sites, listened to educational speeches on communism, democracy and tolerance. an

NBA champion Kobe Bryant is an international superstar. In particular, he has multitudes of fans throughout Asia, where his popularity was furthered by his participation in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. On the Los Angeles home-front, Kobe Bryant has been working to find ways to help American youth better understand the importance of the U.S. - China relationship. During the second semester of the 2009-2010 school year, the NBA Champion’s Kobe Bryant Family Foundation launched Mandarin language and culture programs in conjunction with After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles.

The program objectives for the All-Star students were language acquisition and orientation to Chinese culture. They also learned the ancient martial art of Wu Shu; the most popular national sport in China. World Champion Wu Shu practitioner, Master Hu served as teacher Programs are planned to continue with the Alliance High Schools for the 2010-2011 school year.th

On October 29th, the Staples Center hosted over 1,000 students from all ASAS-LA schools to an exciting professional hockey game when the LA Kings played the Vancouver Canucks. The students bundled up to enjoy the game and were excited to see the Staples Center center arena display their involvement with ASAS-LA.

Before the start of the game, two All-Star students from Bret Harte and Kranz Intermediate joined the hockey teams on the ice to drop the puck during opening ceremonies. At half-time, ASAS-LA student, Diana Romano from Vista Middle School got the chance to ride the popular Zamboni ice-smoothing machine! Diana had fun during her ride, waving to the crowd and her fellow All-Stars in the stands. The ASAS-LA logo and students were featured on the jumbotron throughout the night, creating much excitement. After the game, all 1,000 students came on the ice to take a picture with the LA King’s lion mascot.

In the fall of 2009, Kobe Bryant and video game company, 2K Sports hosted a video game tournament for a lucky handful of students. Joining Kobe were Lakers Derek Fisher and Sasha Vujacic, also Clippers players Eric Gordon and Chris Kaman.

There was a four-team tournament of two-on-two teams playing video game, NBA 2K10. The All-Stars that competed in the tournament were all part of ASAS-LA digital media and gaming programs. A happy student exclaimed: “it was so awesome playing with the Lakers! They were really good at the video game and very nice to us too.”

Kobe and 2K Sports later presented a check to ASAS-LA: the $25,000 donation helped to fund ASAS-LA’s Mandarin language and culture programs, which launched in January 2010. There was extensive media coverage of the event, including ABC News Los Angeles, Fox Sports, NBC News Los Angeles, and the LA times. This was the first time in which After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles visited the Lakers’ practice facility in El Segundo.

reaching for the stars

2010 galaThe third annual “Reaching for the Stars” gala dinner was held on evening of Thursday, February 18th at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel. Proceeds raised benefitted After-School All-Stars’ programs, providing opportunities to at-risk youths throughout LA County.

During the dinner ceremonies, After-School All-Stars founder, Governor Schwarzenegger addressed the 600 esteemed attendees, educating the highly regarded crowd on the importance of comprehensive after-school programming.

Guests then enjoyed an incredible performance of the National anthem when All-Star student, 12 year-old Noelia Goodman of Porter Middle School, as she delivered the patriotic song with composure well beyond her years. Several All-Stars in Bell Gardens Intermediate’s dance programs later wowed the crowd with their amazing Latin-inspired jazz and hip-hop dance routines.

The event also recognized three honorees whose commitment to After-School All-Stars has been a dedicated effort to improve the lives of at-risk youths in their communities. The evening’s honorees included: Henry Cisneros, Former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, who received the Enlighten award; Dr. Sabrina Kay, Chief Executive Office of Freemont College, who accepted the Educate award; and Todd Wagner, Chief Executive Officer of 2929 Entertainment, who received the evening’s Inspire award. Through their involvement, the lives of thousands of youths have benefitted in tremendous ways.

After-School All-Stars was grateful to all attendees, sponsors and donors that helped to make the evening a success. Through their support, they helped to ensure that all children… in spite of where they live, are given the tools and encouragement needed for a brighter future.
