Presidents Report December The noughties are rapidly drawing to a close and the club continues into its fourth decade of existence! Thank you all once again for re-electing me to the office of Club president again - looking forward to continuing enjoyment of all your company.

In case you were not able to attend the AGM – One of our newest members, Rob Hurst, was elected to the position of club secretary and one of longest serving members, Keith Wilcox, took up the position of club treasurer, Joy Unno took up the position of Editor, Tom Minto as Social Organiser, Josan Moss continued as Trips Coordinator, whilst Alex Hurst, Tony Richards, Ian Johnston, Jim Wilcox and Keith Low took up positions as general committee members. Thank you to our newer members for seizing the opportunity to get stuck in and involved and to our long serving members who continue to serve and give back to the club. Thank you to our outgoing committee members, Rob and Wendy Griffiths especially; who persevered on despite the considerable health difficulties experienced through the year and, to our trip leaders for taking us all around the country.

As it happens Rob Griffiths and Karl Boeing are still going to be contributing significantly to the club by providing a significant enhancement to the club’s website to make it easy to register for, organise, manage and report on trips and to make it an excellent portal for non members to get to know about the club and to join us on trips. We look forward to seeing how it unfolds.

Looking forward into the new year we have a number of exciting trips and social activities already planned for the early part of the year – one of which being Simon’s “Take Another Bight” trip in April which I personally am looking forward to as it will be the first long rolling trip I have had the opportunity to join. We continue to look for good opportunities and ideas to get away, so if you have an idea but are reluctant to lead it, put it forward to the Trip/Social Coordinators or to any of the other club officers and we will see if we can give it legs.

TRIP CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT December

Looking back I see that we are about to be treated to the Christmas Lights show at Rob and Wendy’s planned for last year, so unfortunately I will miss the event. Hopefully there will be many photos of lights and smiling faces taken to record the event.

Wishing you all a Happy (and safe) Christmas and New Year.

Cheers, John Cahill

Thank you to the club for allowing me to be the Trip Coordinator for a second term. I hope we can all enjoy another successful year of well attended trips. I am pleased that no trip was cancelled, so thank you to all our enthusiastic and supportive members.

Thank you also to all the Trip Leaders that make it all happen, and to our one and only first timer Tom Minto, who lead his first trip earlier in the year. May there be many more first timers next year!

Finally, thanks also to the other committee members for helping.

If you are going away for the traditional holiday season break, I hope you have a very happy, safe and relaxing holiday. Take your diary and this magazine with you so you can plan your first quarter of 2010!

Here is the latest event list so you can plan well ahead:

Sun 10th Jan – Beach Trip, Myalup – Peter Andruszkiw (see page 12)

Sat 23rd to Tue 26th Jan – Extended long weekend, Lucky Bay. Trip Leader - Keith Wilcox. Note, Tuesday is the Public Holiday (page 8).

Sat 13th Feb –Karakamia Wildlife Park, Australian Wildlife Conser-vancy. A twilight walk has been booked – see promo next page.

Sat/Sun 20th/21st March - Gingin Observatory, camping overnight at new campsite nearby. Trip Leader - John Cahill.

Good Friday April 2nd/ Sun 11th April Take Another Bight! See promo page 13. The trip is nearly full, so please let Simon know if you are planning to go. Due to the nature of the itinerary Simon is not able

Page 5: 2009-12

to have it combined with a 4 day trip, so we hope to organise a 4-day Easter trip in the new year, so let me know if you have any ideas.

Hope you can all make the Christmas Light Show Party, but if not, have a very merry Christmas and see you in the new year!

See you out there...Josan

KARAKAMIA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY SATURDAY FEBRUARY 13TH.

Time to be confirmed in Jan magazine, but expect to be ~ 6.45pm.

View Australia’s Unique Wildlife in the Wild!

If you haven’t seen a Woylie, a Quenda or even a Tammar Wallaby before, then come to Karakamia for a guided twilight walk on a balmy summer’s evening.

Under expert guidance we will hope to see these protected nocturnal creatures venture out for their night activities in their natural habitat.

The walk is approximately two hours along bush tracks. It is recom-mend wearing comfortable walking boots or shoes with good non-slip soles, as some of the terrain can be slippery.

There are tea and coffee making facilities to enjoy after the walk.

Karakamia is managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, and is located approximately one hour’s drive from Perth CBD.

There are two ways to get there – via Great Eastern Highway – turn left in to Old Northam Road, turn left in to Northcote Road, then turn first right in to Lilydale Road, and the sanctuary is 4.25kms down this road.

Or, from Toodyay Road – approximately 3kms past Gidgegannup turn right in to Lilydale Road, travel 5.5kms and the sanctuary is on the right hand side.

Cost: $18 per person; $12 concession; $50 family payable by cash, cheque or credit card.

LUCKY BAY - Australia Day LWE 23-26 January 2009

With Australia Day being on a Tuesday it was decided to make a long, long weekend for those ‘lucky’ enough to be able to get the Monday off. Lucky Bay is situated between Port Gregory and Kalbarri about 2 hours north of Geraldton. Camping will be behind the beach in the sand dunes. The area is handy for snorkeling, swimming or fishing. Nearby is an extensive sand dune system on which we will have a play and you may wish to bring a sand board or fly a kite. You may also wish to bring drinks and snacks to watch the sunset.

You will have to bring everything for a camping LWE, as there are no facilities or water at Lucky Bay. Suitable for camper trailers but not cara-vans.

Depart: Saturday morning 7.45am for an 8.00am prompt start

Meet: Gingers Roadhouse (Gull Service Station), Great Northern Highway, Upper Swan

Fuel: Full tank at Gingers, refuel at Geraldton

Bring: Everything for camping, food, water, camera, recreation gear

Cooking: Gas stove

Contact: Keith Wilcox 9344 6830, 0413 266 245

Keith will provide directions for those people who have not previously been to Lucky Bay and are interested in coming on this occasion.

Acknowledgements:

Thanks go to Keith Wilcox for providing the interesting photos, of the shenanigans at Lancelin Dunes on the 22-11-09, which appear in the trip reports (pages 16 & 18).

Full marks to those who noticed that there were, in fact, 21 cars lined up on the Lancelin sand as shown in the photo on page 19.

There were some comings and goings of Subarus during the day which accounted for the varying car numbers recorded in the Lancelin Dunes trip reports.

Carey Brook – March LWE – 27/28 Feb and 1 March

2010

This is a DEC camping ground “discovered” during the Club trip to Yeagarup at Easter last year.

From the DEC bro-chure for this camping ground:

“Carey Brook offers

both vehicle based

camping and walk in

camping amongst lush

forest on the crystal

clear Carey Brook. A

3.5km walk trail mean-

ders along the Brook

connecting the camp-

ing sites. At the nearby

Donnelly River boat

ramp you can launch

your boat or canoe for a trip to the river mouth. Use Carey Brook as a base to ex-

plore the beautiful surrounds.”

There are 2 camping loops – Grass Tree Hollow (5 campsites) and Snotty Gobble Loop (9 campsites). I would like to stay at Snotty Gob-ble Loop. The camp sites are tucked away amongst peppermint trees. These sites are not suitable for trailers. There is also a group camping site and a shared camp kitchen facility for all to use.

However, you cannot make a booking for any site at Carey Brook, including the group camping area. It is all first in, best dressed. So, if any intending participant is able to go up on the Friday and is willing to try and reserve individual sites and/or the group camping area for the Club, could you please let me know.

Destinations we can visit include Lake Jasper, Black Point, Beedelup Falls, Yeagarup and the Karri Forest Explorer Drive (88kms)

BEACH RUN 10 JAN 2009

Our annual beach run is on again second Sunday in January. Again it will be in the area between Tim’s Thicket ( Mandurah end) and Binningup ( Bunbury end). My thought at this point in time is to go down towards the Bunbury end and work our way up.

This run is always a good opportunity to practice some beach sand driving.

Meeting spot: Former end of Kwinana freeway ( Baldivis Rd) in the vicinity of the service station and Fast food out-lets. Take Safety Bay Rd exit off Freeway ( if you are not sure ring me).

Meeting time: 9.00am

What to bring: usual picnic lunch, sun protection gear bathers (if you wish to go for a swim- we will make time for this), tyre gauge and pump ( not needed if you are a visitor or first timer), camera and what ever else you think necessary.

Pets: OK on the beach, but your responsibility.

Difficulty: suitable for everyone, novice upwards.

Finish time : Depends on how much fun we are having, what the weather is like and what you feel like. I would like to be around the Dawesville area by around 3.30pm. If you need to leave early that’s OK too.

Please ring me if you have any queries

TAKE ANOTHER BIGHT.

Easter plus. Friday April 2nd to Sunday 11th 2010.

The plan is a continuation of a trip some years ago cut short by bad weather and the wheels falling off! Hopefully this time

neither will occur.

We will leave on Good Friday and travel to Caiguna on the

Nullarbor, then south to the cliffs on the Bight. We will then travel west along the old overland telegraph line and the beaches to Esperance.

Spectacular scenery, the huge cliffs on the Bight, Toolina Cove, 100m high Bilbunya Dunes and the magnificent bays and beaches of Cape Arid and Le Grande National Parks.

Total distance is around 2250km with over 500 on Bush Tracks and Beaches. Bush camping all the way. Possible 2 nights in Esperance at Best Western Motel at the end of the trip.

Some old and not so old historical sites such as Baxter Cliffs, Rossiter Bay, Torsion Bar Hill and Slightly Damp Camp.

Register your interest now by emailing

[email protected] for the selection criteria and addition information sheet.

Trip Leader

Simon Newton.

PLEASE NOTE.

This trip is filling fast, will take names for 12 cars and waitlist in case of cancellations. If you would like to go but not in your own car you may be able to pair up with someone traveling alone and save costs.

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORTS

Hooning in the sand at Lancelin-22/11/09 In this day of instant celebrities and lightweights it is interesting to note that some old fashioned promises are still kept. A case in point is the mission statement of the Subaru 4wd Drive Club of WA which states, as one of its aims, to educate family groups in the capabilities of Su-baru vehicles in a structured and informative friendly manner. I had the opportunity to see this first hand in the sands of Lancelin

The day started well with a beautiful day in the offing and my Forester packed and ready to go early. Digging my son out of bed proved to be the hardest part of the packing process. This achieved, we made the rendez-vous at the Light Horse memo-rial car park 4 km north of Joon-dalup drive to learn that two strings of 7 cars had already

been despatched to shorten the convoy. The third convoy of which we formed a part showcased the amazing array of vehicles that bear the Subaru name. There were ‘tricked up’ L series, old Subarus with a new lease of life and a rather striking lifted Subaru WRX.

After a meeting at the bakery car park in Lancelin proper, 20 cars set sail for the Lancelin dunes area, a veritable sea of white, stretching as far as the eye could see. Large dunes resembled waves rearing up from the flat bed of the dunes, all dotted with snarling, air-borne dirt and quad bikes and of course a convoy of Subarus,

Page 17: 2009-12

Page 17

SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC

with a commodore at their head, flying a high red flag, like an admiral’s standard. We had split into two groups, the learners or beginners group and a prancing all singing, all dancing group of more experi-enced drivers. Both had a leader. I chose to be in the beginner group to gain experience in the sand.

Attempting less challenging dunes at first with our tyres let down to 15psi, we gained confi-dence on the nursery slopes un-der the sharp eye of the admiral, Peter Andruszkiw. He ‘chunked’ information into small manageable bits and coached drivers through with a very organised and impressive style. After a series of more difficult moves, we broke for lunch and an informative theory session on running gear. I found the whole day great fun and educational, which is what I wanted from the day. My son is still grinning from rebel yells from his dad at the wheel as we crested dunes and swept around in sweeping arcs in the little car with a grin from ear to ear.

On some previous excursions I have found the trip leaders to be a little ‘gung ho’ in handling their cars with skill perhaps not matched by the fledgling drivers following in their wake. Peter’s patient approach was perfect for a template of what a trip leader should look like.

We ended a very enjoyable day and headed back to the ‘smoke’ only to be delayed by what looked like a fatal accident involving a large road bike. Police had closed the road and the traffic was soon banked up by ways. We also had to dodge the petrol heads from the V8 cars at Bar-bagallo raceway, but eventually reached home after a great day out. A big thank-you to Admiral ‘Patient Peter’. Well Done! Richard and Scott le Serve

Lancelin Sand Dunes– a 2nd view: 22/11/09 The day loomed bright & bold & lo & behold 19 vehicles (10 members & 9 non members) turned up at the 10th Light Horse Memorial Car Park (no sign of Phar Lap), on time & were enroute by 8.30am. For those technically inclined the bulk of the fleet were Foresters, 2 Brumbies, 2 x 1.8L station wagons (1 raised), 1 WRX. Evidently Matt in his Jaffa (raised Liberty) caught up to take the final number to 20.

First stop Lancelin Bakery at 10.00am where it is amazing what you will eat at that time of the day regardless of whether you have already had breakfast.

Peter’s briefing under the verandah (surrounding the local toilets) was very succinct & two groups were established – the ten ‘Beginners’ under Peter, with Jim riding shotgun & the more experienced ten ‘Hoons/Extremes’ led by Tony with no nominated outrider; there’s confidence for you.

Second stop was into the carpark at the base of the Dunes for the obligatory photo-shoot & more importantly reducing tyre pressures down to the critical 15 psi.

From there each group went their separate ways & in the case of the Beginners, were put through a series of inclines & declines which be-came progressively steeper & softer. Apart from the loss of one black sump-guard there was relatively little drama. At one point the white Brumby refused to start but this was quickly rectified with the com-ment that the gauge of wiring was only just adequate for the task.

Without any further drama we got to the ‘Valley of Eden’ for lunch at 1.00pm; the reverie of which was affected by the Knott’s who went too quickly down the slope arriving with a bang. I kept telling Barb to get her hand off my knee.

There being no scribe for the Hoons one can only reflect on hearsay & like all good aspiring journalists speculate on what came via the informal grapevine.

Scuttlebutt has it that their fearless leader very early in the piece was pushing his luck & ended up stuck on the crest of a dune. Apparently ‘a heavy 4x4 from an emergency response unit was nearby & the two occupants saw it as an opportunity to practice recovery procedures & were starting to unpack snatch straps. They looked slightly disap-pointed when 5 or 6 of the group recognizing his potential embarrass-

Page 19: 2009-12

Page 19

SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC

ment valiantly climbed the dune on their hands & knees to help push his car back far enough, so it could be reversed down the dune’.

Not content with this, ‘descending into the biggest dune of the day, turned into a bit of a nightmare, because whilst the leader was able to find a way back up a few brave souls attempting the same challenge

had mixed outcomes. Almost all of these involved the use of shovels/snatch straps/Daniel’s Maxtrax etc’.

The luncheon break was therefore very welcome & informative with Peter aided by Jim & Adrian demon-strating the recommended range of equipment options which was ex-tremely informative & appreciated.

With the exception of the grey L se-ries which refused to start until

helped, the exit from the dunes was uneventful & everyone pro-ceeded back onto the bitumen before parking in the shade to pump up their tyres.

Thereafter the return to Perth was made more interesting by a mas-sive traffic snarl just south of the Guilderton turnoff which resulted in a number of vehicles turning round & travelling north to Bennies Road & eventually either cutting back onto Lancelin Road or alternatively going home via the Brand Highway.

It was a great day & our thanks to Peter in particular for organizing it so well. The large number of non members was also a tribute to the efforts of those members who manned the stand at the Four Wheel Drive Show.

Day 28 (Friday 26 June) 2009

We must have been camped at least 400 metres from the Highway, but the sound of vehicles and trucks still carried clearly in the night air. Thankfully though, the noise didn't cost us too much sleep.

Up at our usual hour, had breakfast and then packed up. Unfortunately, I managed to some-how lose my wedding ring out of my pocket and it took some time to find - thank you Simon (he moved the car forward and there is was, hiding underneath!). As a result, Jeanette and I left a little later than the others (at about 7.30), but

soon caught them up - in the turbo it took no time at all, especially as we were travelling along the “90 mile” straight!

Going through Cocklebiddy, we all arrived at Caiguna at 8.25 and filled up. A short distance out of Caiguna, some of us stopped at the Caiguna Blowhole for a look-see. I thought that I could feel some air coming out. Worth the stop.

Back on the road, all was reasonably uneventful until we saw a guy ap-proaching us riding a monocycle, apparently travelling on his own! Riding on two wheels on the high-way is probably dangerous enough. He was really pushing his luck riding on one!

Our next stop was Balladonia, which we reached at about 10.40. We all had showers @ $3.50 each, followed by morning tea. We left Balladonia at 11.25 bound for Norseman. We arrived at Norseman at 1.20. Filled up again and bought some food for lunch which we ate at the petrol station.

Page 21: 2009-12

Page 21

SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC

From Norseman, we had planned to take the Hyde-Norsemen Road, but unfortunately it was closed (flooded). We pushed on to Cool-gardie instead.

Jeanette and I travelled ahead to investigate accommodation options. We arrived at Coolgardie at about 3.30. The motel attached to the Caltex had rooms, as did the “Denver City” hotel. Jeanette and I, Dave and Keith stayed at the hotel. Others stayed at the motel.

We all agreed to meet at the hotel for dinner at 6.30. Until then I re-laxed a bit and watched TV, taking in the news about the death of Mi-chael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett.

Dinner was good. I had a T-bone steak for $25. Most of the others had fish.

Even though we were in fixed accommodation, we still went to bed early.

Day 29 (Saturday 27 June) 2009

Slept very well. Got up, packed and headed off to Simon & Anne’s motel room for breakfast.

Soon we were on the road again and we arrived at Southern Cross at 9.45. We all filled up with petrol and had morning tea.

From there, we headed off on the final leg to Perth. Along the way we got some rain. We had intended to stop at Cunderdin for lunch, but with dark skies approaching, we decided to push on.

We eventually stopped at Meckering for lunch. While

there we took in the Earthquake Memorial. Some interesting memo-rabilia, including bent rail lines! Took a group photo.

From there it was non-stop to home. Good to be home.

On behalf of the group, our sincere thanks to Simon and Anne for leading an unforgettable trip. We are looking forward to the next one!

Tony Richards.

Note: Missing returns from the Swan Valley trip were payed by Tony / Keith. Suggestion to have club bear the loss were rejected as both felt that given neither could remember what happened to the money it was right that they should make up the loss.

- Overall this year (like last) has ran at a loss, so we need to keep an eye on money over the coming year.

- May need to look at raising subs for next year.
