The York College women’s basketball team enters 2009-10in a manner different than any other season in the history of theprogram. The Spartans are coming off a year which saw themgo 27-3 with a regular season Capital Athletic Conferencechampionship, an NCAA Tournament appearance, a berth inthe Sweet 16 and a school-record 25 game win streak.

While the Spartans had the greatest season in program his-tory, they graduated a six player senior class that ranks as themost successful four-year class ever. This year’s edition of theSpartans features two returning starters, a core of seven return-ing players and seven newcomers that will be expected to makean impact on the Spartan fortunes in 2009-10.

Spartan head coach Betsy Witman is very aware of the ac-complishments of last year’s team, however, the Spartan men-tor is ready to move on.

“Last year was incredible,” says Witman. “There is no doubtit will go down as one of the most enjoyable years I have everhad in coaching. But, last year is over and we are very excitedabout this year’s team. We know that we will have some differ-ent challenges as we will be very young but I am ready to seewhat this team can accomplish.”

Witman will build her squad around a solid group of return-ers including All-Capital Athletic Conference guard AprilSparkman and starting center Jaimie Sapp. Also returning forthe Spartans are senior guard Jamie Polan, and juniors GayleExley, Caitlin Byrne, and Val Hudson in addition to sophomoreMandy Parshall.

“I feel good about the returners that we have,” states Wit-man. “They have the experience of a highly successful seasonand they also bring strong leadership to a very young team.”Sparkman had a tremendous sophomore campaign as the guardaveraged 15.8 points per game, which ranked her second in theCAC. Sparkman, who was a first-team conference pick and anall-regional selection, shot 51.6% from the floor, 42.2% fromthree, in addition to grabbing 5.9 rebounds and handing out 2.2assists per game. Sparkman hit two huge game-winning shotslast year and brings the ability to shoot the ball consistentlyfrom a deep three to a short jumper.

“April really blossomed into a great offensive player lastyear,” states Witman. “Her ability to get herself a quality shot isa strength while she shoots the ball at a high percentage. Thething about April is that she is also an outstanding defensiveplayer. She was a great shutdown defender last year and we expect those same things this year. April is also a year more experienced and I believe she will be a better on-the-floorleader for us this year.”

Sapp came on strong as the season progressed and she is

poised to become an all-conference caliber centerfor the Spartans. Sapp averaged 7.3 points and 4.1rebounds per game last year. However, Sapp’s lastseven games of the year she averaged 12.1 pointsand 6.0 rebounds per game. She shot 55.7% fromthe floor while also blocking 30 shots for the year.

“I am really anxious to see how much betterJaimie can be this year,” says Witman. “She wassuch a huge force at the end of last year and wasreally playing as well as anyone on the roster thelast third of the season. Jaimie understands thatshe can be a dominate player in our conferenceand I look forward to watching her continualgrowth as a player.”

Witman will turn to Polan, Exley and Byrne toget more experience on the floor. Polan will seemost of her time as the two-guard with the abilityto move over and play some point guard ifneeded. She finished last year averaging 1.8points and 1.3 rebounds per game. Those numbersdon’t truly reflect her ability as she played behindAll-American Keli Ward and third-leading scorerAmanda Andrews.

“Jamie has the ability to be a key contributorthis year,” says Witman. “She has become a confident player that has the ability to shoot theball from the perimeter while she can also get tothe hoop. I also think Jamie brings a great attitudeto a young team. She will be an outstanding captain for us.”

Exley is a player that will get the opportunityto crack the rotation for the first time in her career. She is a talented player that will see timeat both the three and four spots. Exley is a talented passer and a solid shooter from the

perimeter. She is strong and should put up solidnumbers with extended playing time. Exley isalso one of the smartest players on the team andbrings a great understanding of the game to thefloor.

“Gayle is someone who I expect to take advantage of the chances she will get this year,”says Witman. “She has a great ability to pass theball and has outstanding court vision. It’s notoften that you have a small forward that can passlike Gayle can. I am excited to see what she cando this year.”

Byrne brings a presence to the post for theSpartans. She has the ability to play the powerforward and center positions for the Green andWhite. Byrne, who averaged 2.3 points in limitedtime last year, has a soft touch around the basketand the ability to finish in the paint. She is a physical player that gives York a player that willbe aggressive in the paint.

“Caitlin has a load of potential,” says Witman.“Much like many of our returners, I will be interested to see how she performs with extendedplaying time. I think that Caitlin can make a positive impact on our rotation this year.”

Hudson is another player looking to earn away into the frontcourt rotation. She has battledinjuries over her two years in the Green andWhite but Hudson is healthy coming into the yearas she hopes to take advantage of her opportuni-ties and earn a spot in the rotation.

“Val is a hard worker but she has had somebad luck with injuries during her career,” statesthe Spartan mentor. “She is someone who couldreally come on and provide us with another front-court option. Val has a nice touch from 15-feetand in while she continues to become a better defensive player.”

Parshall returns for her second year in theGreen and White as one of the most talented athletes on the squad. She saw time in 18 gameslast year and brings an amazing work ethic to theSpartan program. Parshall will work to earn minutes at the shooting guard and small forwardpositions for York.

“Mandy is a player that has come a long wayin a year,” says Witman. “She works extremely

hard and her incredible attitude is such an asset toour program. Mandy continues to improve on thefloor and she will battle to earn a spot in the back-court rotation.”

While Witman has a number of quality return-ers, she will also need a six-member freshmanclass and a sophomore transfer to contribute to theteam in 2009-10. The class features point guardCinthia Ruiz, guard Loreta Tonuzi, forward JennyKaufman, forward Jess Kramer, guard MeganLanigan, and guard Kara Snyder. Sophomoreguard Khadija Mitchell joins the Spartan programafter transferring from Notre Dame (Md.).

Ruiz is an athletic guard that will likely be incontention to start at the point for York. She is aquick player that feels as comfortable playing uptempo or running sets for Witman. Ruiz is a hard-nosed player that brings a toughness to the Spar-tan lineup. She has the ability to be a consistentthree-point shooter while she can also penetratethe lane and create havoc for opponents.

Mitchell will also work for time at the pointguard position as she brings a year of collegiateexperience to the Spartans. Mitchell has been im-pressive in early practice sessions and should giveWitman quality options at the one. Mitchell canshoot the ball from deep while she also does agood job of putting her teammates in positions tobe successful.

Kramer is a left-handed post player that willhave a chance to earn significant playing time inthe frontcourt for Witman. Kramer is an outstand-ing athlete who can run the floor and play an uptempo style. She is a great rebounder and post de-fender while she also shoots it well from 15 to 20feet on the perimeter.

Tonuzi is another hard-nosed player for theSpartans. She is a left-handed guard that owns theability to shoot the ball from the perimeter whileshe isn’t afraid to mix it up in the paint. Tonuzi isa hard worker that should have the opportunity tomake an impact on the Spartan lineup as a fresh-man.

Kaufman is an athletic small forward who isan aggressive, physical player that will have thechance to earn some time in the Spartan rotation. She is an above average defender that is a great

rebounder and finisher around the basket. Lanigan comes to the Spartan program as a

player with a good work ethic and the ability todo a number of things well. She is a good three-point shooter that is also a solid defender. Laniganis a very unselfish teammate that also has greatcourt vision. She will have the opportunity tocompete for a spot in the Spartan rotation.

Snyder is a freshman walk-on that impressedthe coaching staff with her play early on in prac-tice. She is left-handed point guard that is a veryaggressive defender that provides York with qual-ity depth at point. Snyder can shoot the ball fromdistance while she also can distribute to openteammates.

Witman likes the talent distributed among theseven newcomers.

“This is a strong recruiting class,” says Wit-man. “We will need a few of these players to stepup and be important parts of the rotation. They allbring a high level of skill and they all have uniquetalents that should fit in well with what we do as ateam. I am excited to get to work with these play-ers. Not only are they very good players but Ithink they are also great kids.”

Witman is happy to have started practice andbegin preparing her team for the upcoming sea-son.

“We have a very hungry team,” says Witman.“Our returners have had a taste and want morewhile the newcomers have heard all about howmuch fun it was from our returners. I am countingon the upperclassmen to lead as they have beenled in the past.”

York College Overview York College of Pennsylvania is a private-sector, independent institution of higher education, which focuses on offeringbaccalaureate degree programs in the arts and sciences, business administration, education, public affairs, and nursing. Students may also enroll in courses leading to the associate degree and master’s degree. The College draws its 4,600 full-time undergraduate and 1,500 part-time and graduate students from some 30 states and36 foreign countries. Typically, 50% of York’s freshmen hail from Pennsylvania; 30% from New York and New Jersey; and15% from Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, and Connecticut. Others come from states up and down the East Coast andfrom abroad. Most of York’s part-time and graduate students reside and are employed in the greater York Area. The College occupies a 190-acre, park-like campus, just beyond the York city (pop. 50,000) limits, in the rolling hills ofthe south central part of the state. Close to the heart of “Pennsylvania Dutch” country, York is one hour from Baltimore; twohours from Philadelphia or Washington, DC; and four hours from New York City, Pittsburgh, or Richmond. Nearly half ofits undergraduate students reside in college housing in the vicinity of the campus. York College envisions itself as a center of affordable academic excellence and has received favorable national recogni-tion for its success in offering a higher education program of high quality at a tuition rate substantially lower than the ratescharged by institutions of similar type, scope, and distinction. York’s effective control of tuition costs stems principallyfrom the long-term, generous support of the College by its friends in the York community and its alumni. This support hasprovided both superior debt-free physical facilities and permanent endowment resources sufficient to fund institutionalscholarships and financial aid for needy students. York uses this fiscal strength in turn to provide a kind of “scholarship” toeach of its students in the form of relatively modest charges for tuition and campus housing. York College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges andSchools and has specialized accreditation for its business, nursing, allied health, and recreation programs. York College isproud of its ongoing efforts in gender equity. As per the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act of 1994, information regardingYCP’s gender equity statistics is available for review in the office of the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation. Students can request a copy of the report from the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation.

The Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center The York College campus officially grew on April 29, 2006, as the College unveiled the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness

Center to the public. This 160,000 square foot complex is the centerpiece for student life on the College’s West Campus.

Bordered by McKay Hall and Grantley Hall, and a quadrangle of new dormitories, the Center features the Charles Wolf

Gymnasium, a 1,712-seat arena hosting varsity competition in men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and wrestling.

Other features include an eight-lane competitive pool with instructional areas and 1- and 3-meter diving boards, a three-

court field house, spacious locker room facilities, and a state-of-the-art fitness area that spreads out over 7,600 square feet.

Two new Sport Turf fields sit directly south of the Grumbacher Center. Graham Field is home to the men’s and women’s

soccer and track & field teams while Kinsley Field is the home of the field hockey, men’s lacrosse, and women’s lacrosse

teams.
