IEW The women’s basketball team would like to think more

about the first half of last season and try and sustain that success for a complete season as the calendar turns into a new decade. The Bulldogs were sitting pretty with eight straight wins and an 8-1 record on December 16, 2008. Once the team got into the teeth of their MIAA schedule it was tougher sledding as they dropped six of their last seven games to finish last year with a 14-11 overall record and a 7-9 conference mark.

The team entered the MIAA Tournament as the seventh-seed and dropped a 74-60 decision at second-seeded Saint Mary’s. The team returns seven players from a year ago and a strong guard-laden nucleus. Senior Anita Stamps (River Rouge, Mich./Inter-City Baptist H.S.) is the go-to option on offense and was the team’s leading scorer in 2008-09. She was rewarded for her efforts by being named Second Team All-MIAA. Stamps averaged 13.5 points per game as a junior and became a player who could create off the dribble. She showed her versatility by also leading the team in three-pointers (37) making 37 percent from the arc. Stamps ranked fifth in the league in scoring, sixth in assists and third in steals.

The senior guard duo of Jennifer Perrin (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake H.S.) and Elysia Norris (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Ea-ton Rapids H.S.) bring two years of starting experience to the backcourt. Perrin has run the point for most of the last two years and Norris is the third guard used in a three-guard lineup by head coach Kathy Morris. Perrin is a good com-pliment to Stamps on the offensive end as a solid shooter. She ranked seventh in the MIAA in scoring at 11.7 points per game. Perrin shot 46.4 percent from the floor and 77.5 percent at the free throw line in 2008-09. Norris played in 25 games and made 22 starts a year ago. She is a hustle player who averaged 3.9 rebounds and 4.8 points.

The frontcourt will be thin in terms of depth as senior Ashley McClarren (Waterford, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes H.S.) and sophomore Jenn Headley (Hicksville, Ohio/Hicksville H.S.) are the only returners who have varsity experience. McClarren was the fourth leading scorer on the team last year at 6.0 points per outing. She shot 45.3 percent from the floor and ranked second on the team with 4.3 rebounds per game. Headley came off the bench to play in 23 games and averaged 14 minutes per game. She shot 55.7 percent during her court time and grabbed 78 rebounds.

Sophomores Kayla Fowler (Logansport, Ind./Logansport H.S.) and Katie Ross (Clawson, Mich./Clawson H.S.) gained valuable experience as freshmen and will look to continue their maturity on the floor. Fowler can play guard and forward spots and is listed as a guard on the roster. She played in 24 games for an average of 9.2 minutes. Fowler made 37 percent from the field and was 3-of-6 from the arc. Ross had the second-most three’s on the team (26) and will look to connect on a better percentage (31.0) in 2009-10. She filled in at point when Perrin was on the bench but is a better fit at shooting guard. Ross shot 67.7 percent from the free throw line and averaged 4.7 points per game.

The season gets underway on November 20 as Adrian hosts its Tip-off Classic. The Bulldogs will play cross-town rival Siena Heights on November 24. The team will also travel to Florida a week before Christmas for the Cruzin’ Classic in Fort Lauderdale. Adrian will play Marymount and Millikin on back-to-back days on a neutral court.

HeadCoachKathy Morris18th [email protected] - Muskingum College (1989)(517) 264-3975

Kathy Morris begins her 18th season as head coach of the Adrian College women’s basketball team. She is second in school history in coaching wins with 190, trailing only Nancy Walsh (223 victories from 1964-86). Morris is also second in Adrian history behind Walsh (1964-86) in seasons coached and games coached (427).

Since 1997, Morris has guided the Bulldogs to three seasons of 15 wins or more (`97, `99, `02) and four appearances in the MIAA Tournament semifinals. The 2007-08 Lady Bulldogs defeated Calvin on the road in the tournament quarterfinals as the fifth seed before falling at Albion.

One of the most successful campaigns came in 2002, when the Bulldogs finished third in the conference with a 17-10 record. In the 2002 MIAA Tournament, Adrian defeated Saint Mary’s in the opening round before falling to Kalamazoo in the semifinals. Morris coached a First-Team All MIAA player (RaSheida Edwards), a Second-Team MIAA player (Sarah Vincke) and two honorable mention players (Lisa Butts, Annie Morton).

In all, Morris has coached 11 First-Team All-MIAA players in her tenure, including two MIAA scoring champions in Tricia Clark (1997) and Ann Terpstra (1998). She has also coached three 1,000 point scorers (Vincke, Terpstra and Renae Huyck). Vincke is second on Adrian’s career points list with 1,486.

Morris is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM). She was a regional NCAA committee member from 2000-03.

Before coming to Adrian, Morris served as an assistant basketball coach and head soccer coach at her alma mater, Muskingum Col-lege from 1989-92. In 1991, Muskingum’s basketball team advanced to the NCAA Division III championship game before falling to St. Thomas (Minn.). The following season, the Muskies advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.

A 1989 graduate of Muskingum College, Morris played four seasons on the women’s basketball team, serving as a captain during her junior and senior years. During her senior season, the Muskies finished 29-2 and were the first team Ohio Athletic Conference history to go through the regular season and conference tournament undefeated. Muskingum advanced to the NCAA Elite 8 before falling to eventual national champion Elizabethtown (Pa.). Morris is currently third on Muskingum’s all-time scoring list with 1,560 points. She was inducted into the Muskingum College Hall of Fame in Oct. 2000.

Morris earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history, physical education and secondary education from Muskingum College. She also received a Master of Science degree in physical education, health and sports science at Ohio University in 1992. Morris (formerly Lee) has three older brothers who are prep coaches in Ohio. Dennis Lee is the head football coach and girls basketball coach at Bluffton High School. Mike Lee is the assistant principal and boys basketball coach at Minster High School. Greg Lee is the assistant girls basketball coach at VanBuren High School. She lives in Adrian with her husband Charlie and three daughters, Ashley, Lindsey and Abigail.

AssistantCoachKyle Wilson2nd [email protected] - Hanover College (2005)517-265-5161 ext. 4004

Kyle Wilson will enter his second season as the assistant coach for the Adrian College women’s basketball team.

Wilson comes to Adrian after working in several capacities for the Hanover College athletic depart-ment since August 2003. While a student at Hanover, Wilson was a member of the event staff for various athletic events and also filled the role of student assistant women’s basketball coach. He is also a Certi-fied Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

After graduation, the native Hoosier stayed on with the Panthers as an athletic department intern dur-ing the 2006-07 school year. Wilson served as a game-day administrator for home athletic events while also assisting with the hiring and scheduling of event staff. Wilson has also been an assistant women’s basketball coach for the Panthers since August 2006.

As a prep player at Franklin County High School, Wilson was a three-year team captain and recipient of the 2001 Coaches’ Award for Leadership and Work Ethic. The Wildcats also had their first two winning seasons while Wilson was on the team. During the sum-mer immediately after graduating high school, Wilson was a member of the Indiana All-Stars team that played in the 2001 Down Under Hoops Classic.

A May 2005 graduate of Hanover College, Wilson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education. Wilson also holds a Master of Education in sport administration from Xavier University.

ADRIANCOLLEGEAdrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian.

On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degree-granting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church.

For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus.

Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.
