With a population of 1.8 million and counting, Las Vegas/Clark County is one of the fastest growing areas in the United States and a perfect example of modern urban living. Located in the nations seventh-largest state, the city of Las Vegas (Spanish for the meadows) was discovered by Spanish explorers and fi rst settled by a Mormon expedition in 1855.

Today, the city is the unquestioned hub of the scenic Southwest. The world-famous Hoover Dam is visited by more than a million people each year while the Lake Mead National Recreation Area is annually host to 9 million visitors for fi shing, boating, hiking, camping and water sports. Las Vegans can just as easily head to the surrounding mountains (Nevada means snowcapped in Spanish) as Mt. Charleston offers snow skiing from an elevation reaching 12,000 feet and Red Rock Canyon boasts outdoor activities amid breath-taking views.

Las Vegas offers unmatched excitement but the renowned Entertainment Capital of the World has also quickly developed into a fi rst-class community offering families a year-round high-quality standard of living.

Adam Candee begins his second season at the micro-phone with the Lady Rebels and his third overall with UNLV athletics, sharing duties with Bob Blum on Rebel baseball as well. A former Las Vegas Sun sports reporter

and columnist, he was the Lady Rebels beat writer in 2004 and 2005, and also reported extensive-ly on the UNLV mens and womens golf programs. Candee also covered the Northern Arizona womens basketball program from 1999 to 2001 while working as a reporter and columnist at the Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff, Ariz. Candees previous broadcasting experience includes two seasons as a play-by-play an-nouncer with the NAU mens basketball team and two seasons as the lead play-by-play announcer for prep football and basketball on KVNA-AM in Flagstaff. He also worked for nearly two years

as a news reporter and disc jockey at KMGN-FM and KAFF-FM in Flagstaff. He has received awards for his work from the Golf Writers Association of America, Nevada Press Association, Arizona Associated Press Managing Editors and Arizona Press Club. After attending high school in Las Vegas, Candee graduated from Northern Arizona with a degree in broadcast journalism and now lives in Henderson.

UNLV TO APPEAR ON THE MTN. & CBS COLLEGE SPORTS THIS SEASON The Mountain West Conference television package reaches a national audience through a combination of telecasts on The MountainWest Sports Network (The Mtn.), CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV) and VERSUS. The Mtn. has been available to cable subscribers in the MWC foot-

print since it fi rst aired in 2006-07 and is now available nationally on DIRECTV. In 2009-10, UNLV womens basketball will make at least four appearances on The Mtn. and one on CBS College Sports as well. On Aug. 26, 2004, College Sports Television (CSTV) and the MWC announced a visionary partnership that revolutionized the college sports landscape. The landmark agreement was the fi rst NCAA Division I football and mens basketball conference-wide deal for CSTV and provided the network exclusive rights to all conference events, including cable and satellite television coverage, national over-the-air and satellite radio, video-on-demand and online broadcast rights. A succession of events since the fall of 2004 has improved the television model, including CSTVs merger with Comcast SportsNet to create The Mtn. MountainWest Sports Network and CBS Corporations purchase of CSTV. On Feb. 12, 2008, CBS

incorporated CSTVs cable, broadcast and online activities into its world-famous brand. The Mtn. is co-owned by CBS C and Comcast SportNet. The relationship with Comcast SportNet also delivered another national broadcast partner in VERSUS. The MWC was the fi rst exclusive college programming provider for the Comcast-owned entity, with football and both mens and

womens basketball games. The CBS C/MWC partnership has guaranteed greater levels of television exposure for all league sports and has resoundingly met the fundamental goals of more exposure and preferred start times and dates. In the summer of 2006, the centerpiece of this historic relationship was realized with the launch of The Mtn. the fi rst sports network dedicated to serving a single col-legiate athletic conference. The Mtn. provides sports fans blanket coverage of MWC ath-letics across multiple sports, including football, mens and womens basketball, and mens and womens Olympic sports. Along with live games, fans get a comprehensive array of news, features and analysis about their favorite MWC teams and players. In 2008-09, more than 250 MWC events were shown live on The Mtn., CBS C and VERSUS. CBS C is currently available in over 84 million homes, while VERSUS is in more than 74 million households.

Bob Blum, the dean of West Coast broadcasters, returns for his 25th season as the Voice of Lady Rebel Basketball. Blum will handle radio play-by-play action for every contest during the 2009-10 season, including any postseason action, on KSHP

1400 AM and via a worldwide Internet link on unlvrebels.com. With over 60 years of broadcast experience, the California legends voice has graced broadcasts for Major League Baseball and National Football League professional sports franchises such as the San Francisco Giants, the Oakland Raiders (fi ve years) and the San Diego Chargers (two years), in addition to college football and college basketball broadcasts in the San Francisco

Bay Area. His production company, Robert J. Blum Productions, produces Las Vegas 51s Baseball of the Pacifi c Coast League (AAA affi liate) along with Lady Rebel Basketball and Rebel Baseball broadcasts. Blum has worked more UNLV games behind the microphone than any other sportscaster in school history, and was recognized for having broadcast his 1,000th career game at UNLV in the Lady Rebels contest at Wyoming on Feb. 4, 2006. For that reason, it was no surprise that the longtime Rebel supporter was voted into the UNLV Athletic Hall of Fames Class of 2000 as a distinguished contributor. More recently, Blum was named as the 2002 Nevada Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscaster and Sportswriter Association. In 1998, Blum was honored at the All-American Football Foundation Banquet as its recipient of the Lindsay Nelson Sportscaster Award. The award honors individuals for lifetime achievement in the fi eld of sports broadcasting.

For the seventh consecutive season, every Lady Rebel game can be heard on KSHP-1400 AM, with Bob Blum as play-by-play man while Adam Candee serves as color analyst. Brittany Halberg and Mark Wasik will also be on select broadcasts.

Kathy on the Radio: Head coach Kathy Olivier will join Harvey Hyde, former UNLV head football coach and local radio host, this season on KSHP-1400AM for the Lady Rebel Update. The segment will air each Thursday night at 6:30 pm during the basketball season, beginning on Oct. 30.

KATHY OLIVIER AND THE KATHY OLIVIER AND THE LADY REBELS PLAN ON LADY REBELS PLAN ON

MAKING SOME NOISE IN MAKING SOME NOISE IN 2009-102009-10

As for those who will step up to lead the Lady Rebels on the court, look no further than this trio of players: junior guards India Chaney and Erica Helms, and sophomore forward Jamie Smith, the 2008-09 MWC Freshman of the Year. We see Jamie being more of a leader this year, shes worked so hard on her game, has come back this season stronger and quicker. Shes so proud to be a Lady Rebel, and that pride and her leadership qualities carry onto the court. India came into the preseason in the best shape weve ever seen her. She has the

mindset that shes ready to be a starter from the fi rst day and to take control of that role. And Erica inspires the team with her intensity on the court, her

play makes everyone on the court improve their effort. Its not just the returnees that has Olivier excited for her second season at the helm of the Lady Rebels. One of the highest rated recruiting class the program has seen in years comes to Las Vegas this fall, with key players at each position and most notably in the post. With Hamptons presence gone from the paint, sophomore transfers Sandrine Nzeukouand Markiell Styles will look to fi ll that void down low, while several freshmen are being looked at to fi ll the backcourt slots.

GUARDS Though the Lady Rebels graduated a pair of starting guards, Olivier is very excited about the potential of the backcourt for this season, especially due to that fact that UNLV returns last years starter at the point in Helms, and Chaney is expected to take over at the No. 2 spot after splitting starts at the three guard. Add in two experienced backups along with several top incoming freshmen, and UNLV has plenty to look forward to from the group. Erica really grew up in the position in her fi rst year as a starter, said Olivier. Her quickness on the court is a huge advantage to us, especially when were in our transition game, and as the season went on last year her decision making improved. While Helms averaged 10.3 points per game last year, third-best on the squad, her biggest impact came both with her passing, as she led the team with 91 assists, and with her three-point shooting. One year after making just eight treys, Helms knocked down a team-best 43 while shooting at a 35.5% mark from behind the arc, which gives the Lady Rebels not only a big outside threat, but only helped to open up the play inside for the UNLV post players. Chaney, meanwhile, started 13 of 32 games for UNLV, but made a bigger impact at the end of the year when she took over after an injury to Dominique Harris in the regular season fi nale. Chaney started all three tournament games for UNLV, averaging 12 points and three rebounds while shooting 45% over the three games, bettering her season average of 7.3 points and 37.4% shooting. One of the most explosive players on the team with her quick burst of speed and ability to elevate on her shots and when taking it to the basket, Chaney has the potential to be one of the top scorers for the team this season. India has great explosiveness and athleticism, and her ability to create her own shot on offense is a huge advantage for her, said Olivier. Backing up the two juniors will be senior Allison Holiday and junior Kalie Scanlon. Holiday has started several games in her three years on the team, and brings a steady hand while running the team from the point. When Allison comes in off the bench, she gives us another outside threat, but just as important is the stability we have with her running the offense from the point, we dont miss a beat, while shes one of the best passers on the team as well,

Last year, it was A New Era for the Lady Rebels. As in the fi rst year as head coach at her alma mater, Kathy Olivier directed UNLV to a six-game win improvement and a thrilling run in the conference tournament, with the team making the semifi nals for the fi rst time in four years. Take a strong group of returnees that now have a year of the new coaching system under their belts, add in one of the top recruiting classes in the Mountain West Conference, and you have a UNLV team that will be Making Some Noise in the 2009-10 season. Olivier is very upbeat about the teams attitude entering the preseason. The success this team had at the end of last year has them excited about the upcoming season, noted Olivier. They gained the confi dence that we can beat any team at this level, and that has really helped build a good foundation for us to continue to work on and improve this year. While the Lady Rebels had several highs in 2008-09, which included upset victories over New Mexico, Utah, and TCU, one of the teams main goals will be to compete at a more consistent level and bring out that high level of play every night. The biggest challenge facing the squad, however, will be fi nding a way to fi ll the void of having graduated fi ve seniors, including three starters. Most notably, UNLV will have to replace one of the top centers in the league, three-time all-conference center Shamela Hampton. With Shamela gone, well be missing not only her inside scoring, rebounding and toughness in the paint, but perhaps even more importantly her competitive drive. She really inspired the other players on the court, now well have to see who can step up and fi ll in that role. Despite the loss of the fi vesome, Olivier fully believes that team chemistry will be a big plus for the Lady Rebels. The only question is if that will result in more stops on defense, an area the Lady Rebels struggled with at times. Both our returnees and our newcomers worked out very hard in the preseason, played together during the summer, and they really came back prepared and in-shape for this year. Olivier also feels that UNLV should be even more of a threat in the transition game this year, something that will be needed to help offset an expected dropoff in three-point production (last years seniors combined for 84 of the teams record 193 made shots from three-point range).

said Olivier. Holiday connected on almost half of her three-point attempts as a junior (14-of-29), while posting a 42-26 assist-turnover ratio in 2008-09. Scanlon, meanwhile, made 25 appearances for UNLV last season. Kalie devoted her summer to getting herself in outstanding shape. She is ready to come in and make an impact on the fl oor in her junior season. After adding just one freshman to the team last year, the backcourt is loaded with fi rst-year players this season. Oliviers biggest concern could be to fi nd minutes for her talented freshmen. Key among the newcomers is Kelli Thompson of Compton, Calif, a four-year starter for Long Beach Poly High, one of the top teams in the nation, and Las Vegas native Mia Bell. Kelli has a very high basketball IQ, she knows the game extremely well and excels at getting to the basket and drawing fouls. I also expect her to be another long-range threat for us. With Mia, she gives us another fast guard that is very explosive on the break and will help our up-tempo game as well. Also new to the backcourt is junior Deanna Mayfi eld, a practice player for the Lady Rebels last year who has earned a walk-on spot this season, and freshman Ashley Kroneberger from Springville, Utah.

FORWARDS Highlighting the Lady Rebel forwards is Smith, who as an unheralded recruit last year not only became the first-ever first year player to lead the MWC in rebounding, she also was the nations top freshman rebounder. Smith didnt just excel on the boards, though, as she was one of the most versatile players in the league, ranking among the leaders in more than 10 categories, including scoring, rebounding, steals, blocks, and three-point percentage. Her workman efforts on the boards were obvious, as she averaged 3.4 offensive rebounds a game, which also led to several offensive putbacks a game, but

she also possessed a good shooting tough from long range, knocking down 36% of her three-point attempts (41-of-114). Jamies ability to do all of the little things on the court is one of her best traits, and she never stops playing hard until the fi nal whistle, said Olivier. Returning for UNLV for her third year is junior Karla Gergelov. Karla is a strong and physical player for us, and well need her aggressiveness inside the paint this season, said Olivier. Gergelov played in 19 games before suffering an injury to her hand near the end of the season. Amanda Anderson is the Lady Rebels second top-100 rated freshman recruit (along with Thompson). Hailing from The Woodlands, Texas, the 6-0 forward is another versatile player who will fi ght for the ball inside while playing strong defense, but can also knock down the ball from 15-20 feet.

CENTERS Here is where the Lady Rebels will be the most inexperienced, as the squad will have to replace Hampton, a three-time All-MWC selection who led the team in scoring with 14.9 points while also pacing the league with 14 double-doubles last year. To fi ll that void, Olivier will be looking at a trio of players, redshirt senior Latoya Hunt, and sophomore transfers Sandrine Nzeukou and Markiell Styles. Latoyas biggest strength is her experience, not only in our system but in Division 1 as she begins her fi fth year with the team, said Olivier. She plays with a lot of toughness and has gotten stronger since last year which will help her defensively inside. Hunt played in 23 games last season while backing up Hampton. Nzeukou will be on the court for the fi rst time for UNLV after transferring from UT-Arlington and sitting out the 2008-09 season. With a year of experience from practicing with the team last year, Olivier expects Nzeukous leadership skills to be a plus on the fl oor. Sandrine is a very good fi nisher and runs the ball well, while shes a strong fundamental player at the same time. Styles was honorable mention all-conference after averaging 10 points as a freshman at Ohole JC. A big presence in the post, Styles will provide a challenge for opposing defenders. Markiell is a strong player who demands attention in the post with her size. She has quick feet and should be key to our defensive effort in the paint.

SCHEDULE Although the Lady Rebels boast a very young team this season, with seven underclassmen and only two seniors, Olivier did not think twice about putting together a very challenging schedule. The 2009-10 slate is highlighted by home games against North Carolina and the Duel In the Desert, which should be one of the top in-season tournaments in the country. Theres no doubt this will be challenging for our team, but I feel it will do a great deal in preparing us for our conference season, especially in playing teams like North Carolina and Nebraska that play similar styles to some of the top teams in our league, noted Olivier. The season will begin on Nov. 13 at Southern Utah, while the home opener comes two days later against Nebraska. After the contest against UNC on Nov. 22, UNLV will host the Lady Rebel Round-Up, with this years fi eld made up of Boise State, Bradley and Washington State. A three-game road swing follows, with trips to San Diego (Dec. 3), Nevada, Reno (Dec. 6) and Fresno State (Dec. 12). The return of the Duel In The Desert, a three-day, eight-team tournament to be held on Dec. 19-21 brings fi ve teams that played in the postseason last year, including preseason top-25 squads Florida State and DePaul, while Arkansas, VCU, and Kansas State will also make the trip to Las Vegas. We feel the Duel In The Desert will be one of the top events in the nation this season and we hope to build this into a yearly event that brings out both the fans and some of the top womens basketball teams in the country, said Olivier. Following Christmas will be a home contest against Northern Arizona (Dec. 29), and then the fi nal non-conference game of the season, at Utah State

on Jan. 2. UNLV will begin the MWC portion of the schedule on Jan. 6 against BYU. For the fourth straight year, the MWC Tournament will be played in Las Vegas, as the 2009 tournament will be held in UNLVs Thomas & Mack Center on March 10-14.

When UNLV searched for its next womens basketball coach that would bring the school back to its status as one of the top programs in the nation, it didnt have far to look. The school turned to one of its own by hiring former Lady Rebel All-American Kathy Olivier as the eighth full-time head coach in UNLV womens basketball history on April 22, 2008. After one season with Olivier at the helm,

theres no doubt that UNLV made the right choice. The Lady Rebels immediately showed their renewed enthusiasm for their new coach with the fi rst 3-0 start in seven years, and the team was the talk of the conference after an inspiring run to the Mountain West Conference Tournament semifi nals as the seven-seed. UNLV would fi nish the year with a six-game win improvement, end long time losing streaks to TCU and Utah, and win two games in the league tournament for the second time in conference history. UNLV had hoped to fi nd a coach that had both success on the national level and was a strong recruiter, and Olivier showed her recruiting skills right from the start. Almost exactly one month after she was hired, Olivier signed her fi rst recruit, Jamie Smith, who 10 months later would became the fi rst-ever Lady Rebel to be named MWC Freshman of the Year. Olivier and her staff continued to shine on the recruiting trail during her fi rst season, as the teams 2009-10 recruiting class was ranked in the top 60 in the nation. Olivier came to UNLV after serving as head coach at UCLA for 15 years (from May 3, 1993, to March 11, 2008). While head coach of the Bruins she helped produce two Pac-10 players of the year, three Pac-10 freshmen of the year, a Pac-10 team championship, a Pac-10 tournament championship and a trip to the 1999 Elite Eight. She steadily built the Bruin program to refl ect her own positive, upbeat and outgoing personality, and is already on her way to transforming the Lady Rebels into a conference contender. From 1998-2000, she led UCLA to a school-best three straight NCAA tournament appearances. In her last 11 seasons as head coach, Olivier guided the Bruins to seven top-four Pac-10 conference fi nishes, a total bettered by just one other conference foe. In her 15 seasons as UCLA head coach Olivier posted a 232-208 overall mark. Her teams favored a running game on offense. But defense is also a Olivier strong point. Seven of the 10 all-time UCLA top marks for lowest opponent fi eld percentages belong to Olivier-coached squads. In 2008, forward Lindsey Pluimer earned honorable mention AP All-America, as well as fi rst team All-Pac-10. Also, UCLAs win over second-ranked Stanford marked the programs fi rst ever over an opponent ranked higher than fourth in the AP poll. Oliviers 2006 squad fi nished the season strong, placing third in the Pac-10 regular-season standings and then winning the conference tournament for the fi rst time with wins on consecutive days over California, Arizona State and Stanford. The Arizona State victory gave Olivier her 200th career win. The Bruins advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and fi nished with a 21-11 record. Olivier coached three AP and WBCA/Kodak honorable mention All-Americans in Quinn, Nikki Blue and Lisa Willis. The trio also earned fi rst team All-Pac-10 honors, Quinn and Willis second and Blues fourth, which made her just fi fth four-time fi rst team All-Pac-10 selection in conference history. Blue became the fi rst Bruin player to lead the Pac-10 in assists, while Willis, the Pac-10 Tournament MVP, led the league in steals for the third-straight season. UCLAs 10-2 record in Pauley Pavilion (.833) was the highest home court winning percentage posted by a Bruin team since the 1980-81 squad went 15-2 (.882).

Oliviers best season at UCLA came in 1999, as she guided her team to the schools fi rst-ever Pac-10 Conference championship and a best-ever Elite Eight fi nish in the NCAA tournament. A 26-8 record marked UCLAs fi rst back-to-back 20-win seasons since a three-peat in the 1977-79 campaigns. The 26 wins were the most by a Bruin team since the 1981 squad went 29-7 and the third-highest in school annuls. The fi nal ranking of No. 7 in the nation was the highest ever for a UCLA team in the USA Today coaches poll and the best fi nish in any poll since a similar ranking in the Associated Press poll in 1981. In 1998 she directed a Bruin team that featured two Pac-10 Freshmen of the Year to the schools best-ever conference fi nish at the time (second, 14-4) and the best winning percentage (20-9, .690) in 17 seasons. It was the fi rst 20-win season for a Bruin team since its last NCAA team won 21 in 1992. The season also marked the fi rst time a Bruin team had been ranked in the regular season

In 2005 Blue garnered her third straight fi rst team All-Pac-10 honor, and Willis earned fi rst team recognition for the initial time. However, the Bruins lost Quinn, the leading scorer and rebounder at the time, to a knee injury midway through the season and fi nished sixth in the Pac-10 after posting non-conference wins over then-No. 4 ranked Texas and then-No. 14 Purdue. Quinn earned honorable mention all-conference and Pluimer was named to the all-conference freshman team. In 2004 Oliviers Bruins earned a NCAA Tournament berth and fi nished with a 17-13 overall record and a third-place Pac-10 fi nish. The team boasted the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, Quinn, and a pair of all-conference performers in Quinn and Blue. Olivier led the 2003 Bruins to 12 conference victories, a total surpassed by only two other seasons in UCLA history. The 12 wins included fi ve on the road, a total bettered by only one other school that season. In 2002 Olivier guided a team, which lost its two leading scorers during the season, to the quarterfi nal round of the Pac-10 tournament. During the 2001 season, she guided a team, which was playing without eight of its top nine scorers from the previous season, to a winning record at home in Pac-10 play and to wins over two nationally ranked opponents. Oliviers 2000 squad earned a NCAA Tournament berth for the third straight year and set a home attendance mark with an average of over 3,700 fans. The team battled injuries and a schedule that saw them tangle with three of the eventual Final Four teams and two others which advanced to the Elite Eight.

Associated Press poll for more than a weeks time since 1982-83. Prior to taking over as the head coach, as an assistant Olivier was instrumental in landing two-sport standout Natalie Williams, recognized as the Pac-10s Athlete of the Decade in a 1996 vote of conference offi cials. The dynamic Bruin coach originally joined the UCLA staff in the summer of 1986. In her seven seasons as an assistant, the team enjoyed fi ve winning years and reached the NCAA Tournament in two of the fi nal four years. In 1991-92, the Bruins compiled a record of 21-10 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Olivier began her coaching career at her alma mater, UNLV, as a graduate assistant in 1981-82. From there it was on to UC Irvine as an assistant coach (1982-83), and then USC, where she was on the Trojan staff for three years (1983-84 through 1985-86) as an assistant. USC, led by sophomore Cheryl Miller, won the NCAA title in Oliviers fi rst year (1984) and reached the championship game in her third season (1986). The former Kathy Ricks, Olivier was a standout player at Cal State Fullerton and then at UNLV. As a freshman (1977-78) at CSF, she averaged 15.6 points and 9.2 rebounds her fi rst season and raised her scoring average to 19.3 as a sophomore. Making the move to Las Vegas for her fi nal two seasons, Olivier earned All-America honors while averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in the 1979-80 season. The team fi nished with a 22-8 record under coach Dan Ayala and advanced to the AIAW Regionals in San Jose, where UNLV lost to USC 78-77 in overtime. In her fi nal year (1980-81), she led the Lady Rebels in scoring (20.2) and ranked second in rebounding (9.2). She still ranks on several all-time lists at UNLV, as her career 18.1 ppg average is the second-highest in team history. She is also eighth in career free throw percentage (76.8%), and her 20.2 ppg her senior year ranks as the 10th best in a season for the Lady Rebels. Olivier played one year on the tennis team as well, in 1979. A native of Placentia, Calif., Olivier comes from an accomplished athletic family, as her sister Mary Ricks played on UCLAs national championship softball teams in 1984 and 1985, and her brother Tom Ricks played on USCs baseball team from 1975-77.
