Last season (2008-09) was one of the most incredible seasons in UW-Stevens Point Swimming and Diving history. We won our 15th WIAC Conference Title in 12 years, also marking the 10th consecutive Conference Title for our Men’s team. We sent 15 athletes to the NCAA Championships, the most in school history, and we basically re-wrote our re-cord board. More importantly, last year’s team truly understood what was really important. They took care of each other, worked hard together, and had a lot of fun. It was the kind of year that makes you realize that the relationships formed within this team transcend the pool. I watched as this team became a family over the course of time, supporting each other through some pretty rough times as well as some pretty fun times. We have an incredible group of freshmen joining us this season as well. It is easy to be excited about what we can accomplish this year.

At Point, we believe that swimming is truly a team sport, that if we all truly care about each other, throughout the pro-cess of a year we create something much larger than the sum of its parts. If we stay focused on what is really important, our goals have a way of coming to us.

Fitness Center

The Pointers train in a facility which contains an eight-lane racing pool, a separate diving well, and a movable bulkhead so training can be done in both meters and yards. The diving well also features two underwater windows. The facility, built in 1991, features a Colorado Timing system with an eight-lane readout. Durafirm diving boards were installed in 2001. The pool also has four power racks for sprint train-ing. The facilities are the best in the WIAC and hosted the conference championships in 2000, 2003, and 2007.

UW-Stevens Point boasts an incredible strength and fitness center for use of all athletes and students. The NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars formerly used the strength and fitness center for their preseason training camp. The strength center is continually in the process of becoming larger and better and a cardio room was recently added. The center boasts numerous free weights and universal machines. Athletes are given a discount on membership to these outstanding facilities.

Each year the Pointers make a winter training trip to a tropical location to train for two weeks. It is a chance to focus intensely on training and preparation for the end of the season, away from the cold weather of Wisconsin. Previous trips have featured Hawaii, Barbados and the US Virgin Islands. There are many ways to make the trip affordable. The team does fund-raisers at the university, such as teaching swimming lessons and working security at campus events. Practices are usually held twice a day, once in the early morning and once in the evening. This leaves ample time for a wide variety of activi-ties during the day. On the trip, team members have the opportunity to go surfing, snor-keling, hiking, climbing, swim in some monstrous waves or even jump

off high cliffs into the ocean. Of course, the main emphasis is swimming and diving.

Training on these trips is intense, and becomes more specific to each individual’s end of the year goals. When the trip is over, team members are likely to be in the best condition of their lives, while having had a great time in the process.

THE POINTERS enjoy a day on Makaha Beach on their winter training trip to Oahu, Hawaii.
