the most significant contribution Nye has madeto Penn state and eastern collegiate golf history cameat the end of the 1995-96 season, when he led the Nit-tany Lions to the NCAA finals with a ninth placefinish in the NCAA east regional.

With their triumphant finish at the east regional, the Nittany Lions became the first team from eitherof the NCAA's eastern sections - district i or ii - toadvance to the finals since the regional format wasestablished in 1987.

in 2004, his Nittany Lions rocked the collegiategolf world by nearly winning the NCAA eastregional, finishing second out of 27 teams, of whichseven teams were ranked in the nations top 15. oneof the teams finishing behind the Lions was the No. 1ranked florida Gators. the Nittany Lions then wenton to finish 15th among 30 teams at the NCAAfinals, making Penn state golf history with its highestteam finish ever.

"the 1996, 2004 and 2008 teams were very spe-cial, said Nye. More importantly, those were verytough minded and believed they could be successfulagainst the higher ranked teams.

  • Since assistant coach Jon Dunlap joined the pro-gram in august of 2005, the Nittany Lions haveproduced some outstanding results highlighted byachieving a program best #6 national rank in theGolfweek Magazine sagarin system in the fall of 2007.the Nittany Lions have qualified for three consecu-tive NCAA Championships (2007, 2008, 2009), andadvanced to finish 25th at the 2008 NCAA finals.the Lions have claimed eight team and 10 individualtitles since dunlap joined the program.

Head coach Greg Nye relates that, Coach dunlapjoined our team at a time when our team practice facil-ities and golf course were under heavy construction. itwas a big challenge to even conduct practice for a fewyears. He was instrumental in helping us perseverethrough that four year period. What was real specialabout that period was the performance of the teamseemed to go hand-in-hand with the improvement ofour facilities, and Coach dunlap had a big hand inmaking that happen.

since fall 2005, Nittany Lion golfers have receivednumerous accolades including two GCAA All-Amer-icans, one Golfweek All-American, three AcademicAll-Americans, four All-Big ten selections (first orsecond team) and one Big ten freshman of the Year.the program has also continued its success in the class-room with the program maintaining an average GPAabove 3.0, including 18 Academic All-Big ten selec-tions. Additionally, during dunlap's first season, themen's golf team finished first in team G.P.A. out of allthe Penn state men's teams.

dunlap handles a large share of recruiting evalua-tions, correspondence and visits, is involved heavily inteam practice, player development and coaching dur-ing events. Additionally he co-directs Penn statesannual home event, the rutherford intercollegiate.

Coach dunlap is involved with nearly everyaspect of our program here at Penn state. He has andbrings a high level of energy to the team every day, andconsistently guides our student athletes through theexpectations we as a staff have set forth for our pro-gram, said Nye.

Before arriving at Penn state, dunlap was theHead Coach at Kennesaw state University (GA) forfour seasons.

during his tenure at Kennesaw state, dunlaphelped the owls to a program best, 7th place finish atthe 2002 NCAA division ii National Championshipand 2nd place finish at the 2002 Peach Belt Confer-ence (PBC) Championship. He coached three GCAAAll-Americans, two Academic All-Americans, onePBC All-Conference selection, two GCAA PiNG All-region selections and four PBC Presidential Honorroll Honorees. Under dunlaps guidance, Kennesawwon three tournament titles while four different owlsclaimed individual titles. Additionally, dunlap spentone season as the assistant coach during the 2000-01season.

While at Kennesaw state, dunlap continued toplay competitively as a professional in Georgia PGAevents and worked as the first assistant golf profes-sional and director of the Junior golf program at theBridgeMill Athletic Club.

dunlap, a native of toronto, Canada played colle-giately at Coker College (sC) and Kennesaw stateUniversity (GA). After graduation, dunlap continuedplaying competitively as an amateur. some of his ama-teur highlights include the 1999 Canadian Amateurand Monday qualifying for the Canadian toursontario open in 2000.

A graduate of Kennesaw state in May 2001, dun-lap also completed his Masters degree in BusinessAdministration during his first two seasons as headcoach in June of 2003.

the Penn state golf family is still healing from theloss of Mike Carter the spunky and colorful sopho-more player from Westfield, N.J. who passed away onfebruary 13, 2002.

Carter, who was known around the course and acrosscampus for his upbeat attitude and engaging personality, was returning home when his car lost control and went offthe roadway.

Penn state was devastated and the Nittany Lions golf family mourned and remembered theirfallen teammate with unity and grace. the mens team wore pink pants as a tribute to Carter atthe 2002 rutherford invitational, the Big ten Championships and the NCAA east regional.

He was a very bright light on our team and we will always remember how he lived each dayto the fullest, said Coach Nye.

to ensure that the memory of Mike Carter lives on in perpetuity, the Penn state golf familyand the Carter family have taken two significant measures. in the spring of 2002, the Penn stateteam and coaches planted a red maple tree near the 18th hole on the home Blue Course in stateCollege, Pa. and dedicated it, with a plaque, to Mike Carter.

in 2003, Michael and Mary Lou Carter endowed a grant in the name of their son to beawarded annually to the golf program.

flowers and a pictorial were placed in memoriam atthe Penn state Golf Course Club House.

As a tribute to Michael, the 2002 mens golf teamwore Carters signature pink pants at the rutherfordinvitational and in post-season play.

facing the best teams in eastern golf, the Nittany Lions came off the teebox with first round ferocity, finishing in a five-way tie for seventh place af-ter an opening round 310. senior Adam decker (left) led with a two-over 74.

in the second round, Penn state improved its team score by six strokes, but fell into a three-way tie for 15th below the cut line that qualified thetop 11 teams for the NCAA finals. decker fired a 71 to keep the Lions incontention.

the Lions berth in the finals was not only monumental for Penn state, but for the entire eastern region as the Lions became the first team in therelatively short history of both districts i and ii to reach the finals.

for the first time since 1987, Penn state headed to the NCAA finals, held in 1996 at the challenging Honors Course in Chattanooga, tenn. Pennstate played well, but failed to make the team cut after two rounds. Ayersled Penn state individually, making the individual cut and finishing in a tiefor 47th place overall after an opening round 71. Penn state placed 29thoverall as a team, which at the time was the top finish of any Big ten teamat the finals.

the Lions berth in the Finals was not only monu-mental for Penn State, but for the entire eastern re-gion as the Lions became the first team in the historyof both Districts i and ii to reach the Finals.

  • finding a more complete set of on-campus golf facilities that sur-pass what Penn state has to offer is pretty difficult. With two18-hole courses and an array of practice facilities, it's easy to seewhy Penn state golfers have the opportunity to develop their games.Penn state sits at the center of what may be the finest group of golfcourses near any campus. the University's Blue and White Courses, toftrees resort, Centre Hills Country Club, and elks Country Clubare conveniently situated within 10 minutes of campus. Coach Nyerelates, "Although we play the bulk of our rounds at the University, being able to practice on other courses that match up well withupcoming sites really helps our overall preparation. Having all of thegolf courses we play so close to campus helps our student-athletesmanage their time with relative ease."

Penn states Blue and White courses have recently undergone reno-vation with the majority of the changes occurring on the Blue. Penn statehas added approximately 600 yards to the Blue Course bringing the totalyardage to approximately 7,150 yards. Additionally, the championshipcourse is underwent a major redesign on the 7th & 8th holes. to stiffenthe overall challenge, 20-plus strategic bunkers were placed in the layoutas well as three new water hazards.the Bigten Conference is well knownfor the outstanding caliber of its university-owned golf courses and withthese updates and improvements, the Penn state Blue will sit proudly inthat group. this is the first renovation/redesign to the course since 1994.the Blue Course has hosted over 20 rutherford invitationals, the 1995Northern intercollegiate, the 2009 Bigten Championship and the Penn-sylvania High school Championship from 1982-2001. the PGA Juniorseries as well as the fCWt annually host events at the Blue Course giv-ing junior golfers an opportunity to see the Nittany Lion facilities.

the White Course provides a challenging alternative to the newerBlue Course. With holes dating back to 1922, the shorter White Coursewill test even the most skilled player. the older course provides smallercrowned greens adding to the character and demanding a creative shortgame. the sculpted bunkering that was done in the 20s has been pho-tographed and studied by some of todays top architects.

the practice areas used by the Nittany Lions also have also recentlybeen updated. the ample grass range located at the opposite end of thepublic range was expanded to provide an area for the Lions to practice justabout any shot in the bag. the area has three tiered blue grass practiceareas, two ample fairway bunkers adjacent to the tee, as well as a rollingfairway for players to work on un-even lies. A small pitching green andbunker were also put into place with the undulated fairway. the undu-lated fairway brings a unique quality to Penn states practiceopportunities.

the newest practice area for the Nittany Lions is a quiet two acre Var-sity short-game Practice Center constructed behind the 14th green. twolarge greens were built with several bunkers, level and un-level lies, up-hill& down-hill shots, and two different practice fairways of 50 and 100yards. one green is used for non-impact shots like putting and chipping, and the second, with the two connected fairways, is for pitching, bunkerplay, and all types of creative short-game shots.

Although we play the bulk of our rounds at the University, being able to practice on other courses that match up wellwith upcoming sites really helps our overall preparation.Having all of the golf courses we play so close to campushelps our student-athletes manage their time with relativeease.

the fairways and greens are seeded with bent grass and aresurrounded by blue grass and rye rough. the rolling terrain givesan opportunity for the Nittany Lions to practice a multitude ofshots that they may face in competition from a variety of lies andelevations.

the short-game practice area is a dream come true facility, saidhead coach Greg Nye. i see this area as a virtual playground for ourplayers as they build their short game fundamentals, touch, and cre-ative shot making skills daily in practice.Range

the Penn state Varsity range Practice Area is an ample grassrange located at the opposite end of the public range. this pri-vate golf team area is newly expanded and now includes fourtiers of teeing ground, two fairway bunkers and an undulatedfairway with a small pitch green and bunker. this slightly ele-vated practice area allows players to shoot at a variety of measuredtargets and see the ball land, thus providing instant feedback inevaluating shot distances.

We developed an area where our players not only have out-standing bent grass surface to practice from, but an area where theycan develop their fairway bunker game, and uneven lie adjustments,Nye said. • the construction for the newest facility, a Varsity Golf Center exclusively for the Nittany Lions, is underway and rapidly coming togetherto be completed by May 2010. the Center is located near the 18th green of our Blue golf course, sited centrally to all of our golf teampractice areas, the Walker Clubhouse, as well as the first tees of both the White and Blue golf courses. this center for Penn state varsitygolf will have four coaches offices, a history display area, locker rooms, club storage, a team lounge and porch, a study and communication cen-ter, a V-1 video and practice room with indoor-to-net and indoor to outdoor hitting bays.

thanks to several generous gifts from alumni and friends of Penn state, we anxiously look forward to moving into the new home of Penn stategolf, said head coach Greg Nye. our student athletes will now have a home in which they can communicate with their coaches and teammatesall in one common space. they will have an opportunity to not only store their clubs and enjoy their own personal lockers, but to relax in the teamlounge in front of a fire places and big screen tV. our guys will have access to the best video and training opportunities, and ability to practice allwinter with the addition of the indoor-to-outdoor hitting bays.
