As we enter our 49th year, we are thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of being
almost a half-century old. How can we be transformative and responsive while staying true to our
mission?
In 2009 Arts for Learning became an official subtitle of our logo. It is also the name of Young
Audiences signature professional development and residency initiative, Arts for Learning Lessons.
This program gives equal weight to literacy and the arts. It gives teachers new tools for instruction
but is built in a way that teachers gradually release the responsibility of learning to the student, a
much more engaging way to learn.
Arts for Learning Lessons is just one example of how the arts play an important role in leveraged
learning. Teachers learn arts-integration techniques, artists develop a better understanding of
educational relevance, and students learn important skills.
Last year, Young Audiences reached over 200,000 children in all twelve regions of the state with
creative arts programming. Serving children is central to our mission, although, it is not enough
without reaching parents, reaching teachers, and reaching the larger community. Our relationship
with schools and community centers is built on a continuum of offerings and services from exposure
to experiences that deeply connect to core curriculum, life skills, and family.
Young Audiences looks back at the evolution of our quality arts learning experiences and looks
forward to new ways of learning, a new appreciation of the creative mind, and implementation
of innovative tools that produce measurable learning outcomes that don’t compromise the sheer
beauty and inspiration of the arts.
Thank you for your generous support and your confidence in the power of arts in education.

Program Spotlight
Arts for Learning
“I really like the lessons and this approach to teaching. I feel students enjoy learning with an arts approach.” -Tracy, Elementary Teacher
The 2009 Arts for Learning program was made possible by the generous support of the JP Morgan Chase Foundation.
In 2009 Young Audiences Indiana’s Arts for Learning
program reached 12 classes and over 200 students. The
project expanded to two new schools and reached a new
community, Lafayette.
Arts for Learning (A4L) Literacy Units form a ground-
breaking literacy program that blends the creativity and
discipline of the arts with cutting-edge learning science
to raise student achievement in reading and writing.
Working with a design team from the University of
Washington led by cognitive scientist Dr. John Bransford,
Young Audiences crafted fi ve A4L Units for use by grade
3-6 classroom teachers. All the units follow Bransford’s
“How People Learn” model, which involves a gradual
transfer of the responsibility for learning from teacher to
student.
Arts for Learning Teacher Binders for Unit 1 & 2Designed by Young Audiences Indiana
• Five Units address specifi c literacy skills
• Teachers can be trained in each Unit in a
as few as 3.5 in-service hours.
• Each unit can be delivered in 12-18 hours
• Five Companion Residencies compliment the
corresponding units

of workshops and guest performances with high school students and several festival perfor-
mances around the state. This program involved both public performances and in-school
events in each of the regions. The program concluded in December 2009.
