Shalom and welcometo the Greater Vancouver Jewish Communities celebration of Israel's 60thYear as an independent state. When we first began planning for the day we envisaged a Jewish "GreekDay" type of celebration but it became obvious that there was a majordifference between Jews celebrating Israeli life and culture and Greekscelebrating Greek culture or Japanese celebrating Japanese culture,Italians celebrating Italian culture, etc. etc. Because the truth is that lessthan 15% of this province's Jews can legitimately claim to be Israeli evenwhen we include their children born in Canada.
The fact is that well over half of BC's Jews stem from an Eastern Europeanancestry with the balance from other parts of Europe or Europe via SouthAfrica, Latin America or the US. A growing number of Sephardic Jews hailfrom North Africa or other parts of the Middle East. Really most of ushave only three things in common - we consider ourselves "Jewish", we areproudly Canadian and we have a passionate attachment to a tiny sliver ofland we call Israel.
So I don't know about you but for me this day is as much about being aproud Canadian as being a Jew and a Zionist. Because in this country wecan proudly proclaim who we are and what we believe in without fear ofbeing thought "less Canadian". And in the same spirit we should acceptthat there are also those who feel resentment and anger towards Israeland they too have an inalienable right to peacefully proclaim their feel-ings and viewpoint without fear of persecution.
So my two greatest wishes for today are that the sun will shine and that itwill shine on thousands of people who appreciate that they live in a coun-try that allows us the freedom to be who we are without fear of persecu-tion. God bless Canada and God bless Israel!
