Ever since joining the Big South Conference, the Liberty Flames men’s soccer program has set a goal of winning a conference champion-ship. And despite several championship ap-pearances and being a perennial contender in the Big South, the soccer season always seemed to come to an end without a confer-ence ti tle. However, the 2007 campaign had turned out to be a banner year for Head Coach Jeff Alder’s program during the regular season. For the fi rst ti me since 2002, the Flames had reached double-digits in wins with a 10-4-2 record. Behind an outstanding defensive ef-fort, Liberty had shut out eight opponents to place among the nati on’s elite in shutout per-centage. In additi on, for the fi rst ti me since its beginning, the squad was ranked every week in the NSCAA South Atlanti c Region weekly poll. Behind outstanding defense and a quick scoring, opportunisti c off ense, the Flames posted a 5-1 mark in regular season Big South acti on to place second in the league’s stand-ings and secure the No. 2 seed for the con-ference’s championship. Focused and deter-mined, Liberty headed to Rock Hill, S.C., the site of the Big South Championship, looking to reach a program goal, which had eluded Flames teams throughout the years. Liberty opened the tournament with a fi rst- round match against the No. 7-seeded UNC Asheville Bulldogs. In a physical fi rst half,

neither team could tally the contest’s fi rst goal, as the match went to intermission, 0-0. Despite carrying play by outshooti ng the Bulldogs 9-1, the Flames could not get the up-per hand. A shot by midfi elder Josh Boateng in the opening fi ve mintues hit the crossbar and the UNC Asheville goalkeeper turned back two other att empts to keep the contest scoreless. In the second half, the defensive struggle conti nued with neither team att empti ng a shot through the fi rst 18 minutes. At 63:02, the half’s fi rst shot by UNC Asheville’s Scott Szy-manski found the left corner of the Liberty net, and the Flames found themselves down, 1-0. However, Liberty remained poised and con-ti nued to work its off ensive patt erns in search of tying the score. Over the next 18 minutes, the Flames were not able to get off a scoring chance, but their pati ence paid off with less than 10 minutes to play. Liberty midfi elder Cameron Chastain was able to get past the UNC Asheville defense and received a long feed from Justi n Willoughby. The junior, fi nding himself one-on-one against the keeper, drilled it past him, knotti ng the con-test at 1-1 with 9:58 remaining. Looking to give Liberty the lead, midfi elder Jeremiah Kappler broke free for a shot with four minutes remaining, but a diving block by the Bulldog keeper kept the score deadlocked. Pushing the att ack, the Flames found the game-winner moments later. Boateng dribbled down the right side of the fi eld and sent a cross-

ing pass through the UNC Asheville penalty area. The cross found an open Willoughby, who pushed home the goal at 87:19 to give Liberty a 2-1 win and advance the Flames into the semi-fi nals. In the semifi nals, Liberty faced the champion-ship’s host and No. 3 seed Winthrop Eagles. As with the day before, shots were once again at a premium in the fi rst half of the contest. Liberty would outshoot its hosts, 4-3, but neither team would be able to muster much off ense. The Flames did come close to scoring fi rst, in the 23rd minute. Midfi elder Brandon Patt erson directed a 30-yard kick toward the top of the net, but the Eagle keeper made a leaping save, defl ecti ng the shot over the crossbar and out of bounds. Both keepers made great saves within min-utes of each other, early in the second half. The Winthrop goalie jumped to his left to deny a shot in the 52nd minute. Three minutes later, 2007 Big South Freshman of the Year, Liberty goalie Paul Gilbert, raced to his right and turned away a header att empt by an Eagle player. Winthrop had another scoring opportunity in the 64th minute when an Eagle att acker turned and fi red from close range, but the Liberty de-fense defl ected the ball just to the left of the net and out of play. Conti nuing to provide an outstanding eff ort in net, Gilbert made several diving att empts to keep the No. 3 seed Eagles

off the scoreboard, including a hard liner from close distance with ti me winding down in regu-lati on to send the contest to overti me. Neither team was able to score the game-winner in the fi rst overti me period. However in the second overti me, Alder’s team made good on the only shot att empt of overti me to claim victory. Boateng took a pass from Adrian Bumbut and blasted an 18-yard shot from the right side into the top right corner of the net, to give the No. 2-seeded Flames the 1-0, double overti me decision. The goal, coming with three minutes remaining in the second overti me, advanced Liberty to its fi rst ti lt since 2001. Two days later, the 12-4-2 Flames faced the No. 4-seeded Radford Highlanders in the Big South Title ti lt. The Highlanders had defeated No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina in the semifi nals, 3-1, and looked for a measure of payback on the Flames aft er an earlier season, a 3-0 blank-ing by Liberty in Radford during the regular sea-son. And while history rarely concerns the players on the current team, Liberty had been in this positi on four previous ti mes in its history and each ti me had come away empty handed. The Highlanders stake themselves to 1-0 advantage in the contest’s seventh minute. A crossing shot from the right side found the left corner of the net at 6:38 for Radford’s only score of the match. Liberty answered off its third corner kick of the half, evening the score in the 34th minute. On Boateng’s corner kick, Willoughby sent a crossing pass in front of the net, which defend-er Douglas Nyame headed into the top of the net. The goal was Nyame’s fi rst of the year and knott ed the score at 1-1. Once again, the Flames struck quickly to take a 2-1 advantage, before intermission. Less than two minutes aft er Nyame’s goal, Chastain found

himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper aft er receiving a pass on the right side by Bumbut. On the att ack, the midfi elder sidestepped the keeper and blasted his game-winning att empt into the bott om left -hand corner of the net for a 2-1 Liberty edge. In the second half, the Liberty defense took over. The back line of Michael Gelatt , Michael Ward, Andrew Kappler and Nyame, the back-bone of the Flames defense the whole season, helped to limit the Highlanders to four shot at-tempts during the period. Only one of the four shots reached Gilbert in net, and he success-fully repelled the att empt, as Liberty captured its fi rst-ever Big South Championship. “I said this since the beginning of the sea-son. God took a group of ordinary men and did something extraordinary,” stated Alder aft er the game. “I really feel he prepared us for this all year and am very proud of my team.” Boateng was named Tournament MVP for his play in Liberty’s three wins. Joining Boateng on the 2007 Big South Championship All-Tourna-ment Team were Andrew Kappler, Willoughby and Chastain. Later in the week, Boateng received selec-ti ons to both the College Soccer News Nati onal and Soccer Soccer America Players of the Week teams. The victory ran the Flames’ mark to 13-4-2. The 13 wins were the most by a Liberty men’s soccer squad since 1999. For their fi rst-ever NCAA Tournament ap-pearance, the Flames faced MAAC Champion Loyola (Md.) in Balti more, Md. Despite a sec-ond-half rally, Liberty fell 2-0. However, it could not undo a magical season for the Flames. A month later, the College Soccer News dubbed the 2007 Liberty season, “A Season to Remember.” It was defi nitely that, as the Flames fi nally obtained one of their program’s goals – a Big South Championship.

Jeff ALDERHead Coach

Eighth SeasonLiberty, ‘91

Under Jeff Alder, the Liberty men’s soccer program has fi rmly en-trenched itself among the elite of the Big South Conference. In 2001, Alder took over a program which had been a consistent winner, build-ing it into a perennial contender for the Big South Conference ti tle, as evidenced by the Flames’ fi rst Big South Championship last season and initi al NCAA Tournament appearance. Alder, a long-ti me fi xture on the Liberty campus, enters his eighth season as the head coach of the Liberty men’s soccer program. He spent nine years as an assistant and four seasons as a player for 21-year head coach Bill Bell, before taking over as the program’s third head coach in 2001, giving Alder more than 20 years on Liberty Mountain. During his seven years at the helm of the men’s soccer program, the Flames not only captured their fi rst Big South Conference ti tle, but have always recorded a top four fi nish in the conference’s regular sea-son standings. Liberty has fi nished fi rst (2001) in the Big South regular-season standings once, placed second three ti mes (2003, 2004, 2007) third (2002, 2005) twice and fourth (2006) once during his tenure. Stu-dent-athletes under Alder have also combined to earn two Freshman All-American honors, a ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American ac-colade, eight all-region recogniti ons, three Big South Freshman of the Year awards and 30 all-conference selecti ons, including 12 fi rst-team members. In additi on, he has seen eight of his players move on to the professional ranks and four picked in the Major League Soccer Draft . Alder has also been the driving force behind the growing visibility of the Liberty soccer program, both regionally and nati onally. Last season, Liberty was ranked every week among the top teams in the Nati onal Soccer Coaches Associati on of America (NSCAA) South Atlanti c Region Poll. In additi on, the Flames have traditi onally played several highly-ranked programs each season.

Under Jeff Alder the Libert

Last season, Alder saw his 2007 squad capture the Big South Title and move on to the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst ti me in program history. The Flames recorded the second-highest win total in school history with a 13-5-2 mark and fi nished second in the Big South with a 5-1 regular-season ledger. Defense was one of the keys to Liberty’s success, as the Flames posted nine shutouts and held opponents to a 1.07 goals against average. Al-der’s team outscored opponents 36-22 and allowed only one total goal in seven home games during the season. The Liberty head coach also saw forward Adrian Bumbut, who fi nished his career among the program’s all-ti me scoring leaders, move on to play professionally. In additi on, de-fender Mike Gelatt became the program’s fi rst ESPN The Magazine Aca-demic All-American. In 2006, Alder meshed a team of experienced veterans and several newcomers to post a 9-6 overall mark, overcoming early injury to several key players to close the season with fi ve consecuti ve victories, before fall-ing in overti me in the semifi nals of the Big South Championship. He also saw two of his players go on to play professionally and for their country’s nati onal team, Trinidad and Tobago, in Darryl Roberts and Osei Telesford. In additi on, under Alder’s guidance, Roberts fi nished his career as the school’s all-ti me scoring leader. In 2005, the Flames lost several key players to injury during the pre-season, yet even aft er a rough start, Alder had Liberty in a positi on to claim fi rst place in the conference going into the last day of the regular season, as the Flames fi nished 6-8-2. The previous season, Alder’s team once again overcame several inju-ries to key players and a tough schedule to fi nish with a 9-10-2 overall mark and a second-place Big South regular-season fi nish. Liberty fi nished second in the Big South with a 4-2-1 record and 8-9-1 overall under Alder in 2003. He guided the Flames to an 11-8-2 record, including a 4-2-1 mark in Big South play during the 2002 season. Later, Roberts was named the Liberty program’s fi rst Freshman All-American.

Despite a 9-10 overall record in his fi rst season in 2001, the team fi n-ished the regular season ti ed for fi rst place in the Big South with a 5-2 league record and reached the ti tle game of the Big South Champion-ship. As an assistant coach, Alder served as the recruiti ng coordinator, a role in which he oversaw the recruiti ng process, including evaluati ons, home visits and offi cial visits. His other responsibiliti es included assisti ng in the preparati on, implementati on and supervision of daily practi ce sessions, scouti ng of opponents, team travel and scheduling. Alder also spent six years as the Director of Academics for Athleti cs, supervising the overall athleti c academic support program for all of Lib-erty’s student-athletes. In the fall of 2002, he relinquished those responsibiliti es to focus all of his ti me and energy into the men’s soccer program. Alder has acquired coaching experience under the directi on of Bruce Are-na and George Gelnovatch at the University of Virginia Camp of Champi-ons. He has also coached at the state and district levels for the Virginia Olympic Development program and has served under Gelnovatch as a guest evaluator with the U.S. Under-18 Nati onal Team. Two years ago, Alder att ended the United States Nati onal Team Camp as a guest of coach Bruce Arena, prior to the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. He holds a NSCAA Nati onal Coaching Diploma, a NSCAA Advanced Na-ti onal Diploma with Disti ncti on and a NSCAA Premier Diploma. Alder has served as a site supervisor for the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tourna-ment for fi ve years (2003-2007) and is a member of the NCAA South At-lanti c Regional Advisory Committ ee. He has also been a voti ng member for the NSCAA Top 25 College Rankings, the past three seasons. Alder received his bachelor’s degree in business management from Liberty in 1991. While playing at Liberty, he was a four-year starter on the men’s soccer team. In his fi rst season as a Flame, Alder earned the 1987 Most Promis-ing Freshman Award. He was also named all-conference in 1987 and was given the Coaches Award and made the Dean’s List in 1989. Aft er posti ng a 7-10-2 record in his freshman season, the Flames went on to have three straight winning seasons in Alder’s fi nal three years on the team. During his senior year, he helped lead the Flames to a 12-2-2 record. Jeff , his wife Lori, son Chandler (12) and daughter Grayson (6), reside in the Lynchburg area.

Dean Short begins his fi ft h season as an assistant coach for the Lib-erty men’s soccer program. He assists in all aspects of program including re-cruiti ng, scouti ng, practi ce instructi on, goalkeeper coaching and game strat-egy. With his assistance, the Flames climbed to new heights in 2007, captur-ing their fi rst Big South Championship. A goalkeeper during his playing days, Short’s work with freshman keeper Paul Gilbert paid dividends, as the fi rst-year keeper went on to post eight shut-outs and a 1.08 goals-against-average in earning Big South Freshman of the Year honors. “Dean has been a great mentor for the players spiritually and has done a good job in the development of our goalkeepers and fi eld play-ers,” states head coach Jeff Alder. “He is a huge asset to our program.” Short, a 2002 Liberty graduate, was a four-year starter in goal for the Flames, completi ng his career with a 35-22-4 record. He also posted a 1.12 goals-against-average and recorded 19 shutouts during his ti me at Liberty. Both marks rank third all-ti me in program history. Short earned Big South all-conference fi rst-team honors three straight seasons (1999-2001), one of only three Flames in program history to do so. In additi on, he was named to the Nati onal Soccer Coaches Asso-ciati on of America (NSCAA) All-South Atlanti c Region team in 1999 and 2000. In the summer of 2005, Short earned a NSCAA Nati onal Coaching Di-ploma. He assists each summer with several camps. Before coming to Liberty, Short spent the fall of 2002 as an assistant coach at Haverling Central High School in Bath, N.Y. While in 2003, he played for the Charlott e Eagles in the A-League. 2008 SEASON BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

The Big South Conference is celebrati ng its 25th Anniversary in 2008-09, a milestone com-ing on the heels of unprecedented achieve-ments and unparalleled success in League his-tory over the past few years. Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Con-ference has matured into a competi ti ve leader in college athleti cs, acti vely pursuing excellence on the fi eld of play and in the classroom. The league’s growing presence as an NCAA Divi-sion I athleti c conference is evident by athleti c accomplishments on the nati onal stage, inno-vati ve marketi ng and media partnerships, in-creased television packages, and quality athlet-ic competi ti on while intenti onally fostering the academic, personal, social, athleti c and leader-ship development of each student-athlete. The Big South Conference was formed on Aug. 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Bapti st College) Athleti c Director Howard Bag-well and Augusta President George Christen-berry began recruiti ng members into the Big South, receiving initi al commitments from Au-gusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the league’s fi rst commissioner and conti nued to solicit new members. His ef-forts led to the additi ons of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to consti -tute an offi cial conference. The Big South’s fi rst year of competi ti on was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fl edged NCAA Division I sta-tus. During its infancy and prior to securing au-tomati c bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several nati onal postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. The league received its fi rst auto-mati c bid in 1990 to the NCAA Baseball Cham-pionship. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the reti ring Dr. Singleton as commissioner. Un-der Sasser’s leadership, the conference imple-mented its public relati ons and compliance programs, and introduced its fi rst-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competi ng among some of the fi nest teams in the nati on. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Con-ference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this ti me, the conference has had two individual NCAA nati onal champions, close to 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16”in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and base-ball, has received nati onal Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s bas-ketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & fi eld, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to

play in the NCAA Tennis Singles Championship three ti mes, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nati onal team and indi-vidual scoring leader in men’s basketball twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an insti tuti on fi nish fi ft h in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the conference’s highest-ever team fi nish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only conference nati onwide to have an at-large par-ti cipant in the football playoff s (Coastal Caro-lina), a team in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last four years, while its playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fi ft h-year of the Big South’s football existence. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the league’s third Commissioner, and in his 12 years at the helm of the Big South, Kal-lander has been instrumental in aggressively promoti ng the conference to new levels. The conference has enjoyed record levels in marketi ng revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and soft -

ball for the fi rst ti me in conference history, as well as increased nati onal television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initi ated its fi rst long range stra-tegic plan, re-affi rming the league’s vision as a disti ncti ve athleti c conference committ ed to the quality of insti tuti onal life through athleti c competi ti on. He also spearheaded the eff orts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruiti on in 2002. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the conference introduced its fi rst live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video off er-ings to more than 500 events annually through a partnership with the member insti tuti ons, as well as the creati on of a conference blog and an online merchandise store. The conference’s on-fi eld accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. An-nually, more than 40 percent of conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidenti al Honor Roll for maintaining a cumu-lati ve 3.0 grade-point average, and the league has had more than 90 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

Dubbed by the College Soccer News as “A Season to Remember,” the Liberty Flames put together arguably the best season in school history in 2007, capturing the program’s fi rst-ever Big South Championship for its initi al NCAA Tournament appearance. Using head coach Jeff Alder’s philosophy of team over individual, the Flames’ group eff ort propelled the squad to 13 wins, the second- most victo-ries in a season in Liberty history. In each contest, a diff erent player stepped up for the Flames, who used a strong de-fensive eff ort to limit opponents’ shooti ng chances and a quick striking, opportunisti c of-fense, in fashioning a 13-5-2 overall mark and a 5-1 Big South record. In additi on, Liberty, for the fi rst ti me in the history of the NSCAA South Atlanti c Region Weekly Poll, was ranked among the region’s top 10 teams throughout the enti re season, reaching its highest ranking of No. 5 on Oct. 2. On a humid, overcast aft ernoon in Lynch-burg, the Flames opened their season at Lib-erty Soccer Field against the Mount Vernon Nazarene Mountain Lions with what would become a familiar sight throughout the sea-son in home contests, a shutout. Senior Adri-an Bumbut nett ed his fi rst two goals of the year and fellow senior Toby Lewis scored on a header to lead Liberty to a 3-0 triumph in its opening match of the season. Four days later, the Flames used an out-standing defensive eff ort at Campbell to hand the Fighti ng Camels only their second loss at home in two years. Freshman goalkeeper Paul Gilbert had an excellent night in goal, turning away seven shots, as Liberty made Chris Phil-lips’ blast on the fi rst shot of the game stand up for a 1-0 triumph. Solid defense conti nued to be a strong suit in the following contest at Gardner-Webb.

Despite seven corner kicks for the Runnin’ Bull-dogs in the fi rst half, the Liberty defenders al-lowed only one shot to reach Gilbert in a 0-0 draw at intermission. However, in the second half, the Flames quickly took control. Junior midfi elder Joshua Boateng pounced on a loose ball two minutes into the period and tallied his fi rst marker of the season. Bumbut followed 15 minutes later with a score of his own, as Liberty would go on to defeat Gardner-Webb, 2-1. The home team’s goal was the fi rst tally allowed by the Flames in 243:18 to open the year. During the ensuing week, Alder’s club was ranked in the fi rst regional poll. Looking to con-ti nue its momentum, Liberty squared off with unbeaten College of Charleston on the fi rst day of the UNCW/Jameson Inn Soccer Classic. The Cougars scored two quick goals aft er the 65th minute to hand the Flames their fi rst setback of the season in 2-0. However, the Flames rebounded two days later with a 2-1 victory over host UNC Wilming-ton. Bumbut found Boateng for a goal in each half of the Flames’ triumph. The duo, along with midfi elder Daniel McGarry, was named to the all-tournament team at its close. Early in the ensuing week, Boateng garnered Big South Player of the Week honors for his eff orts in the weekend tournament. Aft er four straight road games, the Flames returned home to host Longwood. In an evenly played defensive ti lt, the two clubs batt led to a 0-0, two overti me draw. A week later, Liberty hosted instate rival Radford in its fi rst confer-ence match-up of the season. The Flames made it two straight shutouts and four on the season in defeati ng the Highlanders, 3-0. Midfi elder Juan Guzman got Liberty on the scoreboard early with his fi rst goal of the year. Lewis and Bumbut added second-half goals in the victory. The Flames ended September looking to ex-tend their start to 2-0 in the conference and 6-1-1 overall when they closed out their three-game home stand against Winthrop in a much anti cipated early Big South match. On a warm aft ernoon, Liberty struck fi rst, as Bumbut con-verted a free kick just outside the penalty area for a 1-0 lead less than six minutes into the con-test. The Flames then held a talented Eagles defense in check the rest of the way for their third consecuti ve shutout and fi ft h of the year. Off to a good start in conference play and sporti ng a 7-1-1 record, Liberty entered the month of October with its highest-ever regional ranking in the Oct. 1 South Atlanti c Region Poll, being voted No. 5 in the region. In additi on, Bumbut was named the Big South Player of the Week for his performances against Radford and Winthrop. On the fi eld, the Flames’ struggled a bit at the start of the year’s 10th month. Liberty took to

the road for a match at North Carolina, coming up on the short end of a 7-1 score. Four days later, the Flames hosted Marshall in a back-and-forth defensive struggle which ended in a 0-0, two overti me draw. Liberty conti nued its shutout streak at home the following week with an 8-0 win over Colum-bia Union. Senior Brandon Patt erson nett ed a hat trick for the Flames in the win. Alder’s club then closed the week by traveling to Conway, S.C., for a meeti ng with Big South co-leader Coastal Carolina. The Chanti cleers scored two early fi rst-half goals, only to see the Flames mount a furious rally in the second half. Lewis cleaned-up a rebound in the contest’s 60th minute to cut the Liberty defi cit in half and then proceeded to force fi ve keeper saves in the closing minutes. However, the rally fell short as Coastal Carolina held on for a 2-1 win. Putti ng their fi rst conference defeat behind them, the Flames quickly got back into the win column in conference play with a 2-0 victory over UNC Asheville. Junior midfi elder Chris Mandell found Bumbut with a pass for a tally in the fi rst half, while forward Justi n Willoughby scored his fi rst goal of the year in the second half. The shutout ran Liberty’s season total to eight. Once again stepping out of conference, the Flames faced nati onally-ranked Virginia in a midweek ti lt. Despite outshooti ng the Cava-liers, 10-9, Liberty did not score in a 3-0 set-back. Standing 8-4-2 overall and 3-1 in the Big South standings, the Flames looked to make a push for a high seed in the conference tourna-ment in their fi nal two matches, both against league rivals. In their last road match of the regular season, Bumbut scored three ti mes and Liberty’s defense shut down High Point off en-sively, aft er allowing a fi rst half goal, in a 3-1 win to close out October.

As November began, the Flames looked to secure second place in the Big South standings in its fi nal game, a match at home with VMI. Bumbut, McGarry, Guzman and Willoughby all nett ed goals, as Liberty closed the regular sea-son with a 4-1 win. The VMI goal was the only goal the Flames allowed at Liberty Soccer Field in seven games during 2007. Before the contest, the nine graduati ng se-niors on the Liberty roster were honored. Part of the largest recruiti ng class in the program’s history, the group played a key role in the devel-opment of Liberty soccer over their four years in Lynchburg. Bumbut, David Cassidy, Dan Garber, Andrew Kappler, Jeremiah Kappler, Jon Letsen, Toby Lewis, David McCall and Brandon Patt erson were each recognized for their contri-buti ons to Liberty soccer.

Finishing the regular season with a 5-1 con-ference record and a 10-4-2 overall mark, Lib-erty garnered the No. 2 seed in the 2007 Big South Championship in Rock Hill, S.C., where the Flames opened the tournament on Nov. 15 against the No. 7 seed, UNC Asheville. The night before the contest, several Flames took home honors at the annual awards ban-quet. Goalkeeper Gilbert was named the league’s Freshman of the Year, while seven Flames earned all-conference team menti ons. Bumbut, Guzman and defender Mike Gelatt were named to the All-Big South fi rst team, while Boateng, Gilbert, McGarry and defender Douglas Nyame were selected to the second team. The following aft ernoon, Liberty found it-self locked in a physical, defensive struggle through the fi rst 62 minutes of play, before UNC Asheville nett ed the contest’s fi rst goal for a 1-0 lead. However, the Flames struck quickly in the game’s fi nal eight minutes, as Chastain knott ed the game in the 82nd minute and Willoughby scored with 3:19 left to advance the Flames to the next round with a 2-1 win. In the semifi nals, Liberty squared off against No. 3 seed and tournament host Winthrop. Neither team could fi nd the mark in regulati on, as the contest headed to over aft er 90 minutes. And aft er a scoreless fi rst overti me, the Flames advanced to the Big South Final, when Boateng found the mark for a 1-0 victory. Two days later, Liberty claimed its fi rst-ever Big South Championship ti tle and an automati c berth to the NCAA Tournament, also its fi rst, with a 2-1 triumph over No. 4 seed Radford. Aft er falling behind 1-0 earlier, Nyame ti ed the contest late in the fi rst half on header off a cor-ner kick. A few moments later, Chastain beat the Radford keeper for the game-winner.

2007 SEASON REVIEW

Liberty’s Boateng was named the tourna-ment’s MVP, while fellow Flames Chastain, Wil-loughby and defender Andrew Kappler joined the midfi elder on the all-tournament squad. Boateng also earned menti on on both the Col-lege Soccer News Nati onal and Soccer Weekly’s Player of the Week teams. The following week, the Flames played Metro Atlanti c Athleti c Conference champion Loyola, Md., in the fi rst round of the NCAA Tournament on the Greyhounds’ home fi eld in Balti more, Md. Host Loyola scored two goals in the fi rst half and then held off a strong second-half from the Flames for a 2-0 win in Liberty’s fi rst-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. A few days later, Gelatt became the fourth Liberty student-athlete to be named a fi rst- team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Amer-ican. In additi on, Boateng, Bumbut and Gelatt were named to the VaSID all-state squad, while Bumbut, Boateng and Guzman earned All-South Atlanti c region honors. The College Soccer News paid tribute to the 2007 Liberty season by recognizing the Flames as one of 17 Division I programs with “Seasons to Remember.” The disti ncti on paid tribute to the programs which “greatly exceeded expecta-ti ons, or won more games than ever before, or accomplished something that will be a spring-board for future seasons, or put together an im-probable run.” No matt er what the reason, the Flames certainly had a “Season to Remember.”

DR. JERRY FALWELLLIBERTY UNIVERSITY FOUNDER AND FORMER CHANCELLOR (1933-2007)

At the age of 22, having just gradu-ated from college in June 1956, Jerry Fal-well returned to his hometown of Lynch-burg, Va., and started Thomas Road Bapti st

Church with 35 members. The off ering that fi rst Sun-day totaled only $135. Falwell oft en said about the fi rst collecti on, “We thought we had conquered the world”. Today, Thom-as Road Bapti st Church has 24,000 members and the total annual revenues of all the Jerry Falwell minis-tries total over $200 million. Within weeks of founding his new church in 1956, Falwell began the Old-Time Gospel Hour, a daily local radio ministry and a weekly local television ministry. Nearly fi ve decades later, this Old-Time Gospel Hour is now seen and heard in every American home and on every conti nent except Antarcti ca. Through the years, over three million persons have communi-cated to the Falwell ministries they received Christ as Lord and Savior as a result of this radio and television ministry. In 1967, Falwell implemented his vision to build a Christi an educati onal system for evangelical youth. He began with the creati on of Lynchburg Christi an Academy, a Christ-centered, academically-excellent, fully-accredited Christi an day school, providing kin-dergarten, elementary and high school.

In 1971, Liberty University was founded. Today, over 41,000 students from 50 states and 80 nati ons att end this accredited, liberal arts Christi an universi-ty. Falwell’s dream has become a reality. A pre-school child can now enter the school system at age three, and 20 or more years later, leave the same campus with a Ph.D., without ever sitti ng in a classroom where the teacher was not a committ ed follower of Jesus Christ. Falwell was also publisher of the Nati onal Liberty Journal, a monthly newspaper which is read by over 200,000 pastors and Christi an workers, and the Fal-well Confi denti al, a weekly e-mail newslett er to over 500,000 pastors and Christi an acti vists. In June 1979, Falwell organized the Moral Major-ity, a conservati ve politi cal lobbying movement which the press soon dubbed the “Religious Right.” During the fi rst two years of its existence, the Moral Major-ity att racted over 100,000 pastors, priests and rabbis and nearly seven million religious conservati ves who mobilized as a pro-life, pro-family, pro-Israel, and pro-strong nati onal defense lobbying organizati on.The Moral Majority chose California Governor Ron-ald Reagan as “their candidate” for President in 1980, registered millions of new voters, and set about to in-form and acti vate a sleeping giant - 80 million Ameri-cans committ ed to faith, family and Judeo-Christi an values. With the impetus of the newly organized MoralMajority, millions of people of faith voted for the fi rst ti me in 1980 and helped elect Ronald Reagan and many conservatve congressmen and senators. Since 1979, about 30% of the American electorate has been identi fi ed by media polls as the “Religious Right”. Most recent major media surveys have acknowledged these “faith and values” voters re-elected George W. Bush in November 2004.

Though perhaps bett er known outside Lynchburg for politi cal acti vism, Jerry Falwell’s personal sched-ule confi rmed his passion for being a pastor and a Christi an educator. He oft en stated his heartbeat was for training young people for every walk of life.Falwell, who went home to be with the Lord at theage of 73 on May 15, 2007, was married to Macel for 49 years and they have three grown children and eight grandchildren.

2007 BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONS

ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION 2008 SEASONNJEFF BARBERDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Jeff Barber was named the Direc-tor of Athleti cs at Liberty University on Jan. 23, 2006, becoming the 10th Director of Athleti cs in the history of the University. The University has charged Barber

with the future leadership of the athleti cs depart-ment and the building of a strong fi nancial basis for the department which will guide Liberty University athleti cs into the ranks of the elite NCAA Division I athleti c programs in the na-ti on.Barber has wasted litt le ti me making an impact at Liberty, as in less than three years, he has been in-strumental in guiding Liberty on a path to the next level of collegiate athleti cs. He has spearheaded athleti cs facility improve-ment projects in nearly every athleti cs venue, high-lighted by changes to Williams Stadium. During the summer of 2006, the football program’s oncampus playing facility received the latest in playing surfac-es as FieldTurf was installed, while numerous other smaller projects were initi ated to aestheti cally im-prove the appearance of the facility. However, Barber’s chief facility accomplishment since joining the Flames in 2006 was overseeing the completi on of the Williams Football Operati ons Center. The new 48,000-square foot state-of-the-art home base for the football program is one of the most outstanding FCS (formerly I-AA) football-only faciliti es in the nati on. In additi on to Barber’s athleti c facility achieve-ments, the new Director of Athleti cs has spurred a dramati c recording-setti ng increase in Flames Club memberships and season ti cket sales for football and basketball. In 2007-08 the athleti cs booster club set new records, pulling in $351,000 in annual membership contributi ons. The same year saw Liberty Athleti cs

surpass the $1 million mark in giving, as the Flames Club brought in $1.3 million in total capital gift s. Barber has also guided the Flames to success on the athleti c fi eld of competi ti on, highlighted by the 2007-08 season when Liberty captured its sixth Big South Sasser Cup championship and fi rst since the 2002-03 season. Liberty won 10 team championships during the 2007-08 campaign, including eight Big South ti tles, an NCAA East Regional championship in wrestling and an IC4A outdoor ti tle in men’s track and fi eld. Besides the Sasser Cup championship, Barber also saw Liberty bring home the Big South’s Men’s All-Sport and Women’s All-Sport trophies, along with its second individual nati onal championship when Josh McDougal crossed the fi nish line fi rst at the 2007 NCAA Cross Country nati onal championship.Liberty is only the second athleti cs department in Big South history to win the Sasser Cup, Men’s All-Sport and Women’s All-Sport trophies in the same year. The Flames’ success has garnered nati onal att en-ti on on several levels, earning Barber a three-year ap-pointment to the NCAA’s Recruiti ng Cabinet, begin-ning with the 2008-09 academic year. Barber brought a wealth of experience in the areas of athleti c fundraising and administrati on to Liberty University, including 25 years in the athleti c industry.Barber came to Liberty aft er spending 11 years at South Carolina, including his last three years as Se-nior Associate Athleti c Director for Development/Gamecock Club Executi ve Director. Barber served on the senior management team at South Carolina for nine years, helping raise more than $14 million annually, while working closely with legendary football coaches Lou Holtz and Steve Spur-rier. Barber supervised the solicitati on and receipt of over $85 million during his tenure at South Carolina, setti ng records each year in annual gift s to the Game-cock Club, which was at 16,500 members when he fi nished. He was also responsible for all major gift s to the Gamecock Club which exceeded $15,000 annually and developed that level of giving from 21 members to 137 at his ti me of departure.

Barber joined the athleti cs department at South Carolina in 1996 as an Assistant Athleti c Director for Development and was promoted to Associate Ath-leti c Director/Gamecock Club Executi ve Director in 1999. Prior to his days at South Carolina, Barber served fi ve years at Furman in Greenville, S.C., starti ng as Ex-ecuti ve Director of the Paladin Club in 1991, before being promoted to Senior Associate Athleti c Director for External Aff airs in 1994. While at Furman, Barber was responsible for the collecti on of $14 million in revenue from annual giv-ing, capital gift s and endowed gift s, while guiding the Paladin Club to gift s totaling $3.75 million and set records for fi ve-consecuti ve years. He was also the chairman of the Furman Pro-Am Golf EndowmentTournament, which totaled receipts of $6.5 million. Barber got his start in collegiate athleti c adminis-trati on at his alma mater as the Assistant Director of East Carolina’s Pirate Club in 1987. While serving four years with the Pirates, Barber parti cipated in the re-ceipt of annual giving of $4 million to the Pirate Club, while organizing and managing Pirate Club acti onsand Pirate Pro-Am fundraisers. Before joining the staff at East Carolina, Barber served three years in major and minor league base-ball as he was the Assistant General Manager of the Columbia Mets in Columbia, S.C. (1985-86) and Di-rector of Operati ons for the Montreal Expos SpringTraining Camp in West Palm Beach, Fla. (1986-87). Aft er graduati ng from East Carolina, Barber served as a health and physical educati on teacher in Colum-bia, S.C. for four years (1981-85), while coaching foot-ball and basketball. Barber graduated cum laude at East Carolina in 1981 with a bachelor of science degree in health, physical educati on and recreati on. In 1997, he con-ti nued his educati on with a degree from the Sports Management Insti tute, graduati ng as class spokes-man. Barber is a member of NACDA and NAAD and serves on the Board of Directors for the Child Evange-lism Fellowship for Central Virginia. Barber, a nati ve of Greenville, N.C., is married to the former Donna Dacus and the couple has three children – Kati e (13), Lindsay (11) and Jay (10).
