Page 5: 2008 dbq 12-3-12 2

Group the docs so that . . .• There are 3 or more groups of docs• Each doc is in a group• (you may put some docs in more than one group) On a sheet of paper write all the groups and the

doc #s. Example: Wanting peace – 1,6

Page 6: 2008 dbq 12-3-12 2

Group documents & support the thesis with evidence from the documents.

• This means write a paragraph for each group and explain how each document in that group shows a “factor that shaped the modern Olympic movement”

• Write a body paragraph using one of your groups… “One factor that shaped the modern

Olympic movement was nationalism (3,4,5,6,10). Each of these documents shows how pride for nations influenced the games. In doc 3, Lunn says that for the Nazis, the ski competition was a way to show German superiority. In doc 4, …”

Analyze Point of View

• This means to choose 3 docs and explain why the speaker / writer of the doc has his particular point of view. (POV in 3)

For example “Matthias (doc 4) focuses on the

rivalry with the Soviet Union in the interview because he competed at the beginning of the Cold War and the interview was given during the Cold War so Matthias’ point of view was influenced by the intense political rivalry between the USSR and US.”

Analyze Point of View

• On your paper, choose another document and explain the POV of the author or speaker.

“Matthias (doc 4) focuses on the rivalry with the Soviet Union in the interview because he competed at the beginning of the Cold War and the interview was given during the Cold War so Matthias’ point of view was influenced by the intense political rivalry between the USSR and US.”

Page 11: 2008 dbq 12-3-12 2

POVs• Doc 1 – Courbertin is very positive about the

modern Olympics. His point of view is influenced by the fact he is the founder of the Olympic movement, he obviously wants to show how great the Olympics can be so he may exaggerate how the Olympics will unify people.

Page 12: 2008 dbq 12-3-12 2

POVs• Doc 3 – Lund is very critical of the Nazis. His

point of view is influenced by the fact that his country, Great Britain, was in political tension with Germany and the Nazis before World War II. His point of view may be more influenced by the fact that by the time of his interview he saw the destruction caused by the Nazis so looking back he will see their evil side.

Page 13: 2008 dbq 12-3-12 2

POVs• Doc 5 – Azuma describes the Tokyo Olympics

as a miracle. His point of view is influenced by his leadership of the group who organized the Olympics, he probably wants to show how great it was and so he may exaggerate the benefits of the games. As mayor he may also want to declare that Tokyo is now a great city.

Page 16: 2008 dbq 12-3-12 2

Add doc

• An additional document, like a journal from a spectator at the Olympics could show other factors involved in the Olympics. A spectator might show how people from all nations are friendly during the Olympics or reinforce the ideas that people from different nations were rivals.

Page 17: 2008 dbq 12-3-12 2

Add doc

• An additional document such as an article or interview from a Latin American athlete or official could give different factors that made the modern Olympics. There is not a perspective in the documents from this region.

Page 18: 2008 dbq 12-3-12 2

Add doc

• In doc 7, the Japanese article argues that Koreans didn’t make money on the Olympics. An additional document such as an interview with a Korean business owner could give a Korean perspective on the economic factors in their country during the Olympic games.
