2008 and BeyondDear Friends...

A special note from a child shows their appreciation on the second day of the new Tyson Elementary program.

Camp Fire’s mission of building caring, confident youth and future leaders was evident all throughout 2008. Through a partnership with Anchorage Community Land Trust, we opened a new program serving youth-at-risk at William Tyson Elementary School in Mountain View.

We enhanced our proven track record of providing safe, nurturing care for children in our after school programs by engaging in the process of national accreditation through the National AfterSchool Association. Our day camp program at APU drew record enrollment. Youth in rural communities from as far away as Ambler received water safety instruction and youth development activities to build leadership. We continued specialty camps for youth from the American Diabetes Association and Denali Family Services at our residential camp on Kenai Lake.

After careful, thoughtful research and planning, Camp Fire embarked on the early phase of our Campaign To Make It Possible to raise $5M. The Inclusion Fund portion of the campaign will insure youth and families who may be experiencing financial difficulties can have access to Camp Fire programs for at least 10 years to come! And at last, we will rebuild and rejuvenate our resident camp on Kenai Lake so that youth will learn about and enjoy outdoor recreation activities in one of the most pristine and inspiring environments in Alaska.

Camp Fire’s vitality and stability is made possible through the efforts of many dedicated volunteers, donors and talented staff. We are deeply grateful for their relationship to Camp Fire and for their caring of Alaska’s youth.

Summer Camps

Archery range at Camp Kushtaka.

The Alaska Council’s co-educational summer camps provide 1,000 young campers with opportunities to be outside, connect with nature, learn new skills, make new friends, and get in touch with a sense of life that is larger than one’s self. With the supportive guidance of caring adult counselors, campers build their own unique community in which each member experiences a sense of connectedness, affiliation, belonging, safety, acceptance and appreciation.

Our camp programs are designed around the following outcomes for campers:

– greater self-awareness and positive values

– Increased social skills and sense of belonging

– Increased knowledge of and appreciation for the natural world

Camp Kushtaka is a residential camp located on Kenai Lake in Cooper Landing, serving campers ages 7-18.

Camp Si-La-Meo is a day camp program in Anchorage located on the campus of Alaska Pacific University, serving campers ages 4-13.

Rural Alaska Program

heading upriver in Mcgrath.

All the fun of summer camp witha focus on teaching swimming,cold-water survival skills, andhealthy living.

The Rural Alaska Program teaches swimming and cold-water survival skills to children and teens who live in communities along coasts and large rivers. Alaska consistently has the highest rate of drownings in the country; more than ten times the national average. The program came to life more than 45 years ago as a way of addressing the drowning rate and has evolved to include boating safety, healthy life skills, recreational activities such as crafts, games, hikes and camp-outs, and youth community service projects.

2008 Participating Communities:

Ambler, Beaver, Chistochina, hughes, Kalskag, Koyokuk, Mcgrath, Stebbins, St. Mary’s, Tatitlek, White Mountain

“Swimming, arts, crafts, snacks, soccer, softball, gym time and even overnight camping – Camp Fire did it all!”

2008 Highlights

National Accreditation for Camp Fire’s School Age Child Care Program!

Camp Fire’s Chugach Optional program earned the status of Nationally Accredited Afterschool Program in 2008. We are honored to be the first non-governmental agency in Alaska to receive this recognition. Accreditation by the NAA is recognition of quality afterschool programming that is family focused, professionally managed, and based on measurable standards.

We are very proud of all the staff involved in obtaining this goal, and we look forward to the day when all of Camp Fire’s afterschool programs are accredited.

New Community Center Program Opens at Tyson Elementary in Mountain ViewIn partnership with the Anchorage Community Land Trust and the Anchorage School District, and with support from Annie E. Casey Foundation, BP, ConocoPhillips, ML&P and the Rasmuson Foundation, Camp Fire opened its first ever morning Community Center Program. The program meets a critical need for the students and their families by providing before school care at the school. Participation is free to all students, and the program serves approximately 50 children each day.

New Energy at Camp KushtakaVolunteers installed two solar-powered infrastructure systems at Camp ‘K’ to provide power for the camp’s water pump system and the dining hall. The use of solar provides cost-effective, reliable power and serves to build knowledge and understanding about alternative energy for a new generation of Alaskans. The solar project was supported with donations and materials from the Anchorage Downtown Rotary, ConocoPhillips Employee Volunteer grant Program, Alaska housing and Finance Corporation, the Alaska Building Science Network, The Rasmuson Foundation, ABS Alaskan, City Electric and gCI.

During the 2008 Spring Work Weekend at camp, more than 70 volunteers rolled up their sleeves and helped ready camp for the summer season. In a partnership with the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance program, members of the American Society of Landscape Architects Alaska Chapter conducted a site analysis and brainstorming session on the camp’s recreation plan and stewardship of the natural environment.

Community Events Raise Funds to Support Youth and FamiliesCamp Fire is honored and deeply grateful to have been the beneficiary of several community and corporate events in 2008. The funds raised through these events help the Council provide opportunities to all youth through program scholarships, additional staffing and after-school programs in low-income neighborhoods.

2008 Events:Anchorage Mayor’s Charity Ball, Arts in the Park, CIRI golf Classic, Wayne Bradison golf Tournament, Wild Salmon on Parade
