2007 SEASON PREVIEWThe 2007 season will see nine letterwinners return, a tough non-conference schedule and a

new era begin as the team begins their first year of competition in the South Atlantic Conference. With several new faces that could be in the mix, there could be a few questions left to answer.

The seniors leading the way for the Lady Railsplitters are Amanda Baker and KarleeWyrick. Baker was a starter for most of the 2006 season on the right side and will look to be aforce to be reckoned with at that position. Wyrick has been a defensive mainstay for three sea-sons. She is an effective server and is expected to be more involved this season.

Three juniors - Jaclyn Dvorscak, Caitlin Hankins and Cami Lefeld - will each look toplay a more expanded role as they continue their growth.

The sophomores are Amanda Collins, Alison Hess, Amanda Horenkamp and AmberVanderlin. Last season was a very productive one for this group, and they will look to increasetheir numbers as well as challenge others to step up their play.

Six new faces will join the Lady Railsplitters this season, so competition and depth will bea nice addition this season.

Transfers Alicia MacIntyre and Katelynn Riordon look to bring experience and imme-diate contributions to the team.

Freshmen Lia Bevins, Leah Cagle, Lauren Kiwacka and Ashley Knight are a talentedgroup that will be very competitive.

The schedule will feature some new competition as well as some familiar foes in a newlight. Out of the 27 schools LMU will face this season, six of them will be for the first time.

For only the second time in program history and the first time since the 1992 season theLady Splitters will be playing in a new conference. Matches against longtime rivals Carson-Newman, Tusculum and Mars Hill will now have added meaning as those schools are fellowmembers of the South Atlantic Conference and in conference play “everything counts.” TheLady Railsplitters and Coach Smith are not strangers to most of the SAC schools. Under histutelage they enter SAC play with a 53-22 record against conference schools.

LMU will once again open the season at home in their invitational tournament as well asplay in tournaments at Carson-Newman, Lees-McRae and Montevallo.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL COACHING STAFFHEAD COACH:Mike Smith

Continuing a winning tradition and getting a “preview” of life in theSouth Atlantic Conference were the goals of the 2006 season. Goinginto the 2007 season, Coach Smith feels that both he and the team areready and excited to compete in their first season of South AtlanticConference competition. The 19 wins in 2006 continued a tradition as it marked the LMUprogram’s tenth consecutive season of 19 or more wins. Under Smith, the Lady Railsplitters have earned four conferencetournament appearances and have had 11 players named all-confer-

ence, academic all-conference or freshman of the year. The 1999 suqad received a team awardfrom the American Volleyball Coaches Association for their academic achievement. Coach Smith is currently tied for 30th in the NCAA Division II and third amongst SACcoaches in total career wins with 264. During the summer months, Smith enjoys promoting and teaching volleyball. He spends manyhours on the road running camps all over the region for middle and high school players. Originally from Manchester, Kentucky, Smith was a member of the baseball program at Lin-coln Memorial University. He received his bachelor’s degree in athletic training/health in 1992 andhis master’s degree in education administration and supervision in 1994. In addition to his coach-ing duties, Smith serves as the Lincoln Memorial University Athletics Compliance Officer. He ismarried to the former Katy Stanley and they have one daughter, Mary Kathryn.

GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH:Megan Sumrell

Adding a coach with playing experience, enthusiasm and a win-ning background is important, and the LMU volleyball program hasfound that in Megan Sumrell. Megan is from Chattanooga, Tennessee, and played for a success-ful team at Notre Dame High School. Following graduation she en-joyed to a successful career at Middle Tennessee State. She ended hercareer as the Blue Raiders' all-time assist leader, and the team finishedher senior season with a Sun Belt Conference championship and a top35 national ranking. Megan holds a bachelor's degree in exercise science and will be working on a master's ineducation and teacher licensure at LMU. Her primary responsibilities will be coaching the setters, film breakdown and overseeing thefitness and conditioning program.

MARY E. MARS GYMNASIUM The LMU volleyball team plays all ofits home matches in the historic Mary E.Mars Gymnasium, the home of LMUvolleyball since the program came intoexistence in 1989. Since 1992 the LadyRailsplitters have compiled a 121-60record, good for a .669 winning percent-age in 15 seasons of play in the facility.

Since the opening of the Turner Arenain 1991, the facility has been used almostexclusively by the volleyball team.Beginning in 2004, the facility hasundergone extensive renovations includ-ing a new scoreboard, technologyupgrades at the scorers table/press row, repairs to the locker rooms, new windowsand new glass-door entrances. The Annan Natatorium, built in the early1950’s is connected to the Mars Gym andis currently undergoing renovations aswell.

The facility seats 1,500 spectators for athletic events, and houses offices and classrooms. Coach Mike Smith’s office was movedhere in 2004 and is located next to the West entrance.New to the Mars Gym is a state of the art weight room for use by the LMU students, faculty and staff. Several classes are taught inthe facility using both the court and classrooms located in the front and rear of the building. The J. Frank White Academy also usesthe Mars Gym as their home basketball court.

The building now known as Mars Gym was originally a sports arena at Camp Forrest, an Army post and prisoner-of-war camp inTullahoma, Tennessee, (now a part of Arnold Air Force Base known as the Arnold Engineering Development Center), from 1941-1946.One of the more famous people using the future Mars Gym during this period was General George S. Patton, who used the facility in1941- 42 to help train the 2nd Armored Division. Later in the war Camp Forest was also used as a POW camp. After the war CampForrest was closed and the building was no longer in use.

In 1946, LMU began a $75,000 campaign for a new athletics facility and it was suggested that the Camp Forrest building be boughtand moved to the campus. The building was renamed the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium after the mother of a former member of the Boardof Trustees, Sam Mars Sr., and dedicated to all mothers everywhere. The Mars Gym was officially opened on November 29, 1948 in abasketball game which saw the Railsplitters fall 58-4 to the Tennessee Volunteers. In the1950’s the Mary S. Annan Natatorium wasadded to the building. Mars Gym served as the home of the men’s and women’s basketball teams from 1948-1991.
