Shim replacement method (Compensation for the lead angle and tool relief angle)When the pitch is large or the screw diameter is small, thelead angle becomes large and the effective relief angle onthe advance flank side �2 becomes small. In particular, thiswill cause shorter life of the insert in the case of trapezoidalscrew with small flank angle. It is ideal without anyinterference for the thread cutting tip to have the equal reliefangle on both right and left. Replace the shim so that therake face of insert faces the thread groove direction (thatis, � = �3).

In other words, �1 = �2 when the thread lead angle is equal tothe compensation value. Namely, the relief angle of the toolitself is equal to the effective relief angle. If the wrongcompensation value is used, �1 > �2. Namely, the effective reliefangle becomes smaller. Therefore, carry out compensation ofthe lead angle so that the following range is obtained: ± 1° when the included angle is 60° and 55° ± 30° when the included angle is 30° and 29°

Guideline for infeed per pass and number of passes� Determine the infeed per pass and number of passes while referring to the table and description below.

� When using the full-profile insert, set the total infeed amount by taking the finish stock of 0.1 mm into account.� Set the first infeed to 150 ~ 200% of nose R and do not allow it to exceed 0.5 mm.� The infeed amount during the final pass must be 0.05 mm minimum. No zero cut to be made (extra-small infeed or zero cut for machining
of the work hardened surface only will cause shortening of tool life).� The partial-profile insert or inside diameter insert has small nose R. Reduce the infeed per pass and increase the no. of passes.� Standard infeed per pass and no. of passes are shown on page 261 - 262 for each thread shape.
