My Brothers Beloved, It is my pleasure as well as my duty to present this letter of greetings as it will give me greater pleasure to meet with you as we assemble to re-examine our cause, re-dedicate ourselves to the noble ideas of this great fraternity, and regale in the joy of being a brother to those assembled. This year continues to be another momentous one in the annals of Alpha Phi Alpha’s history. The demand for Alphas’ leadership and service is immense and your response has been nothing short of awesome. We have placed our marks on the chronicles of history repeatedly through out our existence and we did so once again recently with the ceremonial groundbreaking for the erection of the memorial to our brother Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I am proud of the way this brotherhood has embraced our new mission statement

and supported our national programs and strategic alliance partners. There is also much greater participation in our national programs. Participation in national programs is not an option and we expect and demand adherence to Alpha’s mandates. Externally Alpha receives high marks across the nation for the service we give to our communities and we know that we have yet to achieve our maximum potential. I am honored to serve as your General President in this historic time and to be able to lead this Fraternity at this time in our existence. The greatest chapter of this august body is yet to be written; its greatest members - yet to be inducted, its greatest leaders - yet to take the oath of office. As we write the next chapters in our history let us remember those who have gone before us and who draw us back here right now. Let us walk in their steps. Let us live in their time. Let us carry forth their mission. It is as if the Jewels are passing on to us the words of a famous poem paraphrased: "To you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die we shall not sleep..." May God bless this great fraternity of extraordinary men and all that we represent. Fraternally,

Darryl R. Matthews, Sr. General President

Delaware Maryland Washington, D.C.

March 29, 2007 Brothers of AlphaEast, On behalf of the Brothers of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Alpha Phi Alpha Chapters (MAAC), it is my sincere pleasure to welcome all of you to the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront in Baltimore, MD, site of the 75th Eastern Region Convention. It is my aspiration that your stay be pleasant, stimulating, informative and, most of all, fraternal during the next four days. Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland and the fourth largest city on the East Coast, after New York City, Philadelphia and Jacksonville; its metropolitan area is the 19th largest in the country. Baltimore, a bustling city built on tradition and civic pride, is an American success story. Since the redevelopment of the Inner Harbor in the late 1970s, Baltimore has set the standard for urban renewal and is now a major travel destination welcoming over 11 million business and leisure visitors each year. The crown jewel of Baltimore is the Inner Harbor, a scenic and popular waterfront area with dozens of retail stores, restaurants and attractions. This, combined with Baltimore’s easy accessibility, makes the city unique. What most people don’t realize is that most sites and neighborhoods are within walking distance of each other, and this makes “Charm City” an ideal place for business as well as pleasure. The fun and festive atmosphere of the Harbor is enhanced by street entertainers, open-air concerts, fireworks, parades, paddle boats, cruise boats and an outdoor ice skating rink. Baltimore is also the home of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African-American History and Culture. The year 2006 was indisputably the pinnacle of success for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. We celebrated one hundred (100) years of outstanding leadership and committed service to our communities. But, as always, Alpha men cannot rest on past laurels. While here, please make sure to take part in all the business sessions and bring this information back to your Chapters so we can continue to advance the cause of our beloved Jewels. Also, please make certain that you benefit from what the city has to offer. I want to personally thank Brother Roland Fletcher, the Local Convention Chair, and his committee for their hard work and commitment to ensure a successful Convention. Again, welcome to the city of Baltimore, MD and I hope that you enjoy your stay. Fraternally,

David Raphael MAAC President & District VI Director

March 29, 2007 To My Brothers, Ladies, Guests and Friends of AlphaEast: It is my great pleasure to bring you greetings and welcome you to beautiful Charm City on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary Eastern Region Convention of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Though it has been some time since I had the honor and pleasure to act as your host for such an event, rest assured that the Host Chapter Brothers and their Ladies, are prepared and eager to ensure that you have the greatest convention ever.

Your hosts for this very significant event in AlphaEast are honored to have this opportunity. The Host Chapters include the Alumni Chapters of Delta Lambda (Baltimore), Kappa Phi Lambda (Columbia), Iota Alpha Lambda (Aberdeen) and Beta Alpha Lambda (Baltimore County) and the College Chapters of Beta Alpha (Morgan), Mu Rho (Towson), Sigma Sigma (Hopkins) and Nu Kappa (UMBC). All of these Brothers and our Host Ladies, promise challenging and rewarding events and activities during your stay in Baltimore. As Ladies Activities Co-Chair Mrs. Yvonne E. Fletcher often says, “We want our guests to be thoroughly entertained and completely exhausted at the end of the convention”.

Brothers we also want you to be informed, involved and invigorated by AlphaEast’s continued recognition and uplift of Scholars and Scholarship throughout the convention. Your book donation is only a part of our continued support of the National Program, “Go to High School, Go to College”. The needs of our African American youth and communities may seem at times overwhelming, but with faith in GOD, trust in one another, mutual respect and unity of purpose, there are no obstacles that we cannot overcome.

We thank you for your attendance, your good wishes and active financial support of our Beautiful Baltimore City and surrounding jurisdictions. You are magnificent and we love you---ENJOY YOURSELVES.

A MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY

Dear Friends: It is my pleasure to congratulate the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. on their 75th Anniversary Easter Region Convention and to welcome you to the great City of Baltimore and State of Maryland. Throughout its 100 year history, the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha have endeavored to inspire and motivate African- Americans in this country and around the world. Today, the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha continue to give a voice to the oppressed peoples of the world, through acts of service. Programs such as the Go-to-High School, Go-to-College, which encourages the completion of secondary and collegiate education, Project Alpha, which works to increase knowledge of teenage pregnancy, and A Vote-less People is a Hope-less people, which focuses on political awareness and empowerment – taken together – demonstrate the power of the philosophy that one person can make a difference and that each of must try. I commend the Brothers of the Eastern Region of Alpha Phi Alpha, and wish all the best for you during your stay in our great State of Maryland. Sincerely,

Martin O’Malley Governor

Educated in the public school system, Lowery attended 12 schools in 10 cities, graduating from Lima (Ohio) Senior High School. He earned a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Howard University and a MS degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California. After graduation from Howard, he spent 2 years in the US Army, primarily in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His work experience was mostly with the federal government – General Services Administration, Navy Department, NASA, Department of Energy, United States Information Agency, and State Department. He held various positions - including US Army Captain, aerospace engineer, management inspector, Spacelab Program Manager, and Assistant Inspector General for Inspections. While at NASA he served as the Manager, Spacelab-Mir Mission, one of the few African-Americans to perform such duties. He was designated Deputy Assistant Inspector General for Inspections, Office of Inspector General, US Department of State in February 1999. His occupational travels took him to Japan, Russia, Iceland, France, Latvia, Cote d’Ivoire, Uganda, Kenya, Slovakia, Eritrea, Namibia, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, South Africa, Denmark, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Mexico, and Haiti. He retired in January 2002 after 38 years of service as the only African-American male member of the Senior Executive Service in the State Department. He is an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated since pledging Mu Lambda Chapter in 1984. He has held leadership positions on the chapter, regional, and national levels. He was twice elected president of Mu Lambda. His primary interest has been on youth, especially African-American males. As such, for seven years he chaired the regional Leadership Development Institute for high school students conducted annually at Howard University. As Chairman, National Programs Committee, he wrote the leaders guide for the "Go-to-High School, Go-to-College" program that is mandatory for all chapters in the Fraternity. He was the advisor to Beta Chapter, at Howard University, from 1986 until August 2000. General President Adrian Wallace appointed Lowery Interim Eastern Region Vice President in August 2000. He inherited a five-figure debt upon assuming the office, but left his successor a five-figure surplus in July 2001. While in office he oversaw a fiscally and fraternally successful convention in Buffalo; restored the financial standing of the Region; and, working with Area Director Brother Larry Charles, chaired the final session of the General Convention in New Orleans that removed the sanctions unfairly imposed on several Brothers in the Eastern Region. His civic service includes: former PTA president (he conducted a study leading to the placement of business managers in selected DC schools); SCLC; the Thursday Luncheon Group (African-American Foreign Affairs personnel); Ambassadors International Club; Boy Scouts of America (past Cubmaster); the blue-ribbon DC Committee on Public Education; and former secretary of the Shepherd Park Citizens Association. He owns two Cold Stone Creamery franchises in Washington, DC with his wife and son. Lowery and his lovely wife of 40 years, the former Modestine Elizabeth Johnson, reside in Washington, DC. They are the proud parents of 3 children – Marc (Washington), Scott (Atlanta), and Terese (Washington); and have three adorable grandchildren – Taya, Nyla and John.
