2007 ‘N’ Level Results

The 2007 ‘O’ Level batch lived up to their expectations of the Principal and teachers, after performing outstandingly

well in the national examinations. Coming into East Spring at Secondary One with a higher T-score than the previous batch, these students did not disappoint the school.

They surpassed the National Average for 11 out of the 14 subjects offered, including all three Languages – English, Chinese and Malay, Chemistry, Physics, Additional Mathematics and Design and Technology. East Spring attained 88.3% compared to the National level of 80.3% for 5 ‘O’ Levels. Eligibility for Junior College also jumped from 59.8% in 2006 to 66.2% in 2007.

With the number of students scoring single digits for L1R5 increasing from 2 to 7, it was remarkable that for the first time, our top scorer, Sing Yong Joong of Secondary 4E4 scored 6 points and 7 distinctions! The other single pointers were Nabilah Banu d/o Nazeer Khan, Ang Wan Er, Goh Xue Ning, Sayed Hamzah b Sayed Ali and Wong Sok Peng, all of Secondary 4E1. The three top scorers of Secondary 5 Normal Academic were Muhd Firdaus b Mohd R, 5N2, Cheng Yoke Jin, 5N1 and Dominic Phua, 5N1.

When asked about his secret for success, top scorer, Yong Joong smiled and advised us to start revising early and regularly-every few days. He even recommended to drink

more water for a clear mind. He also slept early. With 7 distinctions, he should know what he was talking about.

We are certainly very proud of them and aspire to follow in their footsteps.

The workshop on Learning Styles conducted for the staff on 26 February was yet another opportunity for teachers to learn

to engage their students in their classes. Conducted by Mr Michael Choy from Active Intelligence, the workshop took the participants through the Dunn and Dunn Learning Styles Model, The Learning Pipes and Five Appreciation Styles.

More importantly, the session provided useful insights into our students’ learning styles, namely Auditory, Visual, Tactile and Kinaesthetic. A similar workshop had been conducted earlier for the batch of Secondary Four students. The findings on the learning styles of these students help teachers teaching them to prepare lessons that will engage them in the best possible way.

A lunch organised by the Staff Welfare Committee on 7 March was a welcome

respite for the staff of East Spring as it also marked the end of the first term. Amidst the spread of food befitting a Korean barbecue, teachers found time not only to enjoy a hearty meal but also each other ’s company.

Staff Bonding

“The first impression that I had of East Spring, is

that it is a very good school.” This was what Mrs Mohinder told us.

Mrs Mohinder is a teacher at heart. She believes in positive thinking and has always found telling stories “the most powerful way to teach people.” Positive values encapsulated in positive behaviour drive her to role model her belief.

To Mrs Mohinder, East Spring Secondary is a holistic and caring school, where students and teachers are very focused and responsible. She found our school’s values – Responsibility, Integrity, Sincerity and Empathy (RISE) – very meaningful because of what it stands for at the school level and individual level.

Waking up at four in the morning, and getting to school at six forty-five, Mrs Mohinder gives 110% of herself to school. She finds yoga a great way to help keep the balance in her life and makes it a point to do yoga everyday before school. She has found that keeping a structure at home, teaching her three

children self-reliance, and making time for her children when they were younger, help her to keep that balance. Just as she gives 110% of herself in school, she also does the same at home.

A strong believer of Positive Self-talk and Thinking, she encourages students to “believe in yourself, and believe that you are in East Spring because you are good.” She also shared with us the principle of turning problems into opportunities.

Mrs Mohinder wants students, as well as teachers to be proactive and exercise initiative. Her three-minute Power of Positive Energy, is a realisation that everyone needs positive strokes and positive note to start the day well.

She hopes to add value to East Spring, enable teachers to build on their capacity and competency, add vibrancy to our school and eventually to pass the baton for Power of Positive Energy (PPE) from the teachers to students.

Even though our Vice-Principal is very amiable and is someone one finds easy to speak with, she emphasised that she is very firm with students who are disrespectful to teachers, and will personally be there to ensure that they apologise to the teachers.

Welcome to East Spring, Mrs Mohinder! Georgia Ho Yu Xian (3) 4e2

The school organised an Overseas Leadership Training Camp from 8 March to 10 March 2008. This camp was

held at Jeram Besu in Pahang, Malaysia. The objective of this camp was to provide students with the opportunity to learn experientially outside the normal classroom environment. It aimed to cultivate care and concern for fellow schoolmates, self-confidence, team work and develop leadership qualities.

During the camp, students had to overcome their fear of heights and go on a canopy walk which was about 30-50m above ground. It was followed by a jungle trek to the summit of Bukit Teresek where students were able to catch a glimpse of Taman Negara. The afternoon was filled with excitement as everyone went on a rapid shooting journey. No one was left dry after the activity and adrenaline was high amidst a mini splashing competition between the different groups.

The Speech and Drama programme is our school’s developing niche. It is a three-year progressive plan which began in 2007 with the Secondary

One classes. It aims to develop students’ proficiency in Speech and Drama across all streams and levels.

The series of Speech and Drama workshops conducted as part of the SFL curriculum equip the students with the skills that will build the students’ confidence through the use of verbal (speech) and non-verbal forms (drama). Such competencies are also needed in project work and oral presentations. The workshops also provide opportunities for the participants to develop their intellect, creativity, independent learning and promote other corollary skills such as research, reasoning and evaluative skills.

This year, the workshops began with the Secondary Ones in February. For the Secondary Two students, it is their second year of training.

Speech and Drama Workshop

This year, the PE Department introduced a new activity as part of the Orientation Programme for Secondary One students.

At the close of the week long programme, the newcomers were attached to the different CCAs to get a taste of the CCA into which they could be recruited.

A group of students was attached to the Publication and Photography Club. To give them a taste of news reporting, the club sent them out to the different CCAs that were also having their activities on that day.

Armed with their little notebooks and a camera, they went about their little assignment with the guidance of senior members of

the club.

They came back with their observations of some of the CCAs:

“During our visit to the Infocomm Club, we

learned that the members learn

how to use the macromedia flash. They will also learn to edit photos, create websites, blog templates, animations and programming e.g. creating hand phone games.”

“When we visited the Environment Club, we found them doing outdoor activities. After tagging along with them for some time, we found out that they were leaf sketching and bark tracing. They told us that the reason for that activity was to prove that different kinds of trees have different bark patterns. They sketched the leaves in order to create several leaf sketch souvenirs.”

“The members of Wushu were very energetic. They had to be focused so that they did not hurt themselves. At the start of the performance, a representative showed us how to handle the sword. We were impressed at the way they swung the sword fiercely.”

It was obvious the secondary one students had a fruitful time in the CCA that they were attached to. We hope that they are successful in getting their preferred CCA.

CCA Attachment DayCCA Attachment Day

Pahang Adventure CampOn the last day, we visited Home for the Handicapped in Rauh. This home caters to those with down syndrome as well as those who are physically impaired. Known as “ trainees”, the students learn life skills and develop their physical abilities in the home. During our visit, our students helped to paint the home and did some gardening. They had combined activities like morning exercises as well as a karaoke session. The trainees even performed a special dance for their Singapore visitors. We were touched by their hospitality and being with them had certainly taught us the value of empathy.

The Vision of East Spring Secondary School’s Character

Development Programme, “A Caring Community of Responsible Learner”, is closely aligned with the School Vision of “Passionate Learners, Upright Citizens.” In addition, the school’s Strategic Thrust 2, Vibrant and Enriching Programme for Holistic Development, is a key guide in the planning of the programmes.

The Character Development Framework is multi-dimensional, spanning across academic and co-curricular programmes. Central to the framework are the school values which form the basis for the integration. Under each programme, the activities are designed to inculcate one or more of the school values and the relevant social-emotional

competencies. A typical East Springian is thus developed holistically via the different aspects of his life, during his academic career in East Spring Secondary School.

RISE LessonThis is a structured curriculum developed by East Spring Secondary ’s in-house lesson designers known as the Apple Core Group. It comprises self-designed lessons that integrate Pastoral Care, Civics & Moral Education, National Education and Social & Emotional Learning. All teachers are deployed to teach the RISE Lessons.

Character Development - An Integrative Approach Success for Living (SFL)This component gives a practical approach in the various aspects of student development as highlighted in the i-box. The aim is two-fold: to reinforce what is taught during RISE Lessons and in addition SFL is a programme aimed at equipping students in lifeskills and also to develop Social and Emotional Learning through its varied experiences.

A broad range of activities are introduced like Leadership Awareness, Cyber Wellness and Self Awareness and Management skills. Students also go on learning journeys to enable them to develop a better understanding of constraints and vulnerabilities that our society faces at large.

The i-boxThe i-box addresses 7 aspects of student development. The starting point is the student as an individual (i-Am). By addressing the self, we hope to bring about growth in all other areas. Through self-awareness, the school hopes to develop motivated students who display effective self-management (i-Motivate). We picture East Springians as achievers (i-Achieve), inspring role models (i-Inspire) and masters in their own talents (i-Master). They are also individuals who readily contribute to the community and the nation (i-Serve). Finally, East Springians are young vibrant youths with aspirations to move on in their lives or to higher learning (i-Aspire).

With clear directions and focused efforts, East Spring Secondary School has received the following accreditations in 2006: i) National Education (Development) Awardii) Character Development Award (Level 1)

This year, in March, we have been validated for Character Development Award (2008). The results will only be announced in August 2008.

St. Luke’s Eldercare located at Tampines St.11, is a centre that takes care of frail elderly patients who are either

suffering from stroke or dementia and ambulatory problems. The social workers at the centre not only look after the elderly during the day, but also ensure they enjoy their day there.

So our class, 4E2 were divided into two groups. Our group was tasked to help clean the wellness centre, which is a gymnasium that contains equipment for the elderly to exercise to help them remain fit and healthy. But this was not as challenging as the next assignment which was to entertain the hosts. The other group, on the other hand appeared more excited when they were told to take a group of elderly to the karaoke room for their crooning session, which is a block away.

But our shyness soon disappeared because as Valerie Lim reflected, “Seeing the elderly trying their best to participate in the games despite their difficulties, I realised that our presence was appreciated by them.” One by one, class members stood up to take the lead in the games.

Apparently at the karaoke lounge things got off to a rousing start. Jasper Sim recounted, “Everyone at the karaoke lounge was enjoying themselves including the elderly as they sang along with one another.”

The service learning experience was definitely very enriching for Secondary 4E2 as expressed by Tiara Surya, “The visit to St. Luke’s was very interesting and it definitely bonded the class together and built up our class spirit. More importantly I felt a sense of satisfaction for doing something for the community.”

On 15 February 2008, East Spring Secondary comme-morated Total Defence Day in a simple but dignified

ceremony. That morning, the spectators stood around the levels of corridors surrounding the parade square, eyes glued to the marching contingents comprising the NPCC, NCDCC, NCC, SJAB, Girl Guides and Scout units.

The ceremony began with members of the NCC cadets hoisting the Singapore flag. A member of the Girl Guides had the honour of reading the Total Defence Commemoration Message. The ceremony ended with the fine and synchronised marching of the various contingents with the principal, Mrs Sng taking the salute.

During the school assembly, the Singapore Broadway Theatre presented a short skit concerning issues related to terrorism. Though the performers were funny, they ensured that they drove home the serious message on the need to be vigilant. Our very own Drama Club members also put on a skit on the

It was an interesting night out, on 15 February, for some members of the Photography and Publication Club. This was

one event we knew would be a photographer’s delight. We had also learnt that some members of our Circus Outreach would be performing. Armed with cameras, we made our way to the Padang where the procession would take place.

As we had gone there about two hours earlier, hoping to get a good view, the wait was tedious and it was made worse when the procession did not start on time. The glitches were to be expected as it was the rehearsal night. But when it actually began, the photographers really had a field day. Every where you turned, you could hear the sound of shutters and see flashes flicker all

Chingay Festival

around you. Needless to say, our own budding photographers were excitedly shooting as though they were professionals.

As the procession paraded in front of us, we kept craning our heads to catch glimpses of our schoolmates. But we learnt later that Circus Outreach performance was a static display and they were not in the procession. Still, we did not wait in vain because it was a truly spectacular procession of sight and sound.

NCC Overseas Training

During the November holidays last year, I was one of the ten NCC cadets from the various schools who were

selected to go on desert trekking trip in India. The aim of this trip was to foster bonds between cadets of the two countries and exchange ideas on training.

The journey to Jaisalmer was a 20-hour train ride from Delhi. This was unusual to us, Singaporeans who live on a small island. We passed the time playing card games, sleeping and talking. After the tedious train ride, we took another five-hour bus ride to our campsite in the middle of Thar desert. We were all extremely exhausted and could not wait to arrive at our campsite to meet the Indian cadets and our camels!

We had a pleasant surprise. There were running water and electricity all in the middle of the Thar Desert! Not what we had expected. We also found out that we had made front page

news in the newspapers for three days. But soon our excitement of going on a camel safari turned to

groans of body ache. After 8 days of sprinting through the

desert on camel backs, certain parts of our body started to hurt

really badly. Imagine covering a distance of 150km sitting on a camel!

But there were no regrets. Where in Singapore could we experience the harsh desert terrain and great wildlife or enjoy the wonderful sand dunes which were almost 4-storey high?

January 2008 marked a significantly memorable month for me as I was able to embark on Exercise Thunder Warrior. This

10-day exercise allowed National Cadet Corp (NCC) cadets like me to experience the various cultures outside Singapore as well as enable us to witness first-hand the military exercises of Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) at their overseas training site in New Zealand.

Upon arriving in New Zealand, we were paired up with cadets from the New Zealand Cadet Force, with whom we stayed for the first 2 days of Exercise Thunder Warrior. I, along with my partner, was warmly greeted by the members of the O’Connor household who lived in a rural area of New Zealand. It was interesting for me to see farm animals.

On Day 3, all the cadets involved in Exercise Thunder Warrior met up again to make the journey to the SAF overseas training camp located at Waiorou. We had to break journey at Rotorua for a rest. There we were greeted by the Maoris, much to our excitement. For the next few days, we witnessed several SAF military exercises. We also had the opportunity to witness the artillery division of the SAF as well as be exposed to live-firing and troop and vehicle movement. I was truly excited as well as honoured to have been given the opportunity to witness these military exercises as only authorised personnel are allowed into the SAF training premises.

Two NCC members, Hafiz Bacon and Mohammed Afiq were privileged to be involved in two separate overseas stints, namely in India and New Zealand respectively, as part of their NCC training. The two cadets recounted their unique experiences.

Wong Yee Fong

menghasilkan sebuah sajak maya sendiri.

Bengkel Sajak Maya
