Setting the Standard of ExcellenceBucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing ields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually among the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

According to federal data released in the fall of 2006 by the NCAA and reported on by the Associated Press and The Chronicle of Higher Education, Bucknell’s four-year student-athlete graduation rate was highest in the nation among stu-dent-athletes who entered college between the 1996-97 and 1990-2000 academic years. Bucknell was one of four institu-tions to graduate at least 90 percent of its student-athletes who enrolled during that four-year period. Bucknell posted a 93-percent rate, followed by Davidson (90 percent), Duke (90 percent) and Georgetown (90 percent).

Bucknell has claimed 108 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports confer-ence in 1990-91. That is more than twice the next-highest total.

Bucknell student-athletes comprised nearly one-fourth of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2006-07. A record total of 360 Bison recorded a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 245 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the sping of 2007.

26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2007.

In addition to the 114 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 240 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school record of 20 last year.

With six more Patriot League championships in 2006-07, Bucknell has now earned 65 crowns in 17 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 85 conference players of the year, 76 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 442 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & ield, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 13 times in the 17-year history of the af iliation, including nine of the last 10 years. Bucknell captured the overall, men’s and women’s Cup standings in 2006-07, when the Bison teams won six Patriot League titles. It was the 10th straight year and the 13th time overall, that the Bison captured the women’s title. In 2006-07, Bucknell won titles in men’s soccer, women’s cross country, women’s indoor and outdoor track & ield, men’s golf and women’s rowing. The men’s basketball, women’s basketball and women’s soccer teams also captured Patriot League regu-lar-season titles.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Maga-zine Academic All-America selections.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athlet-ics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recre-ation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the inest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natato-rium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A new Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine suite, modern of ices for coaches and staff , and new locker room and class-room space are also included in the facility’s layout.

ABOUT BUCKNELL/KLARCABOUT BUCKNELL/KLARC

Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation CenterKenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center

The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fi elds and in the classroom. With 13 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 17 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 114 Academic All-Americans in 37 years and 108 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 17 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model.

The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the fi nest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offi ces for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife, Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The brand new construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison volleyball and wrestling teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the spacious West Fields for softball, Varsity Soccer Field and Graham Field, including the new Phase III portion of the West Fields Project.

- Diverse religious life programs.- Athletics: varsity intercollegiate program, club sports for both men and women and intramural programs.

Residential Colleges: Housing Options with an Academic Twist

- Six themed programs are open to fi rst-year students: arts, environment, global, humanities, social justice and society and technology.- Students take a course together, live together and participate in out-of-class activities such as informal discussions, guest lectures and off-campus trips.

13 Presidents’ Cups • 14 Patriot League Championships in the last two years

In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Pa-triot League sponsors championships in 23 sports - 11 for men and 12 for women. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA

football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked fi rst each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. In addition, the Patriot League fi nished as one of the nation’s leaders in the NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid. The APR is used to measure academic eligibility, retention and graduation of student-ath-letes.

Patriot League student-athletes and teams continue to enjoy success at the national level, with opening-round victories coming in several NCAA Championships, including wins in men’s basketball during the 2005 and 2006 seasons, a championship game appearence in both football and men’s lacrosse and a sixth-place fi nish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship.

The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful com-petitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.

MEN’S SEASON PREVIEWMEN’S SEASON PREVIEW

The Bucknell men’s tennis team posted a 10-14 overall record and 2-3 record in league play last season and will look to continue moving up in the Patriot League rankings this spring. The Bison return six letterwinners from last year’s squad: senior captains Ira Reibeisen and Ben Young, juniors Jonathan Brenner, Daniel Bednarek and Ryan Sandburg, and sophomore Zach Hascoe. Additionally, the Bison add depth this season with four new-comers: junior Jamie Watson, sophomore Peter Eyvazzadeh and freshmen Anton Kovic and Mark Malloy.

“The men made some great strides last year in their level of play, their commitment to working and winning, and their overall dedication to Bucknell tennis,” said Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt. “Our entire starting line-up returned this year and in addition, we’ve added two solid newcomers (Anton Kovic and Mark Malloy) who will impact our starting doubles and singles lineup.”

Bucknell’s top returner from last season is Reibeisen. “Ira is no-doubt one of the best singles players in the conference,” said Helt. He received his second First Team All-Patriot League honor in the spring of 2007 and set the school record for all-time career singles victories (67), doubles victories (57) and combined victories (124) in the fall of 2007. Reibeisen also notched Patriot League Player of the Month accolades in October of 2006 and was named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2006-07 season.

“We are returning one of the best doubles teams in the region with Jonathan Brenner and Ryan Sandburg,” noted Helt. Last season, Brenner and Sandburg went 25-12 overall in doubles play and 9-6 at the No. 1 posi-tion. Sandburg tied Reibeisen’s all-time career doubles victoriesrecord of 57 wins in the fall of 2007.

“In addition, we’ve added two other solid doubles teams to our lineup, both including our freshmen Anton Kovic and Mark Malloy.” A native of Montreal, Canada, Kovic attended Milton Academy in Massachusetts where he received honorable mention in the Independent School League as a junior. For 18 year olds, he was ranked eighth in Quebec for singles. Malloy comes to Bucknell from Hackley School in Bronxville, N.Y. where he was a four-time tennis team MVP and notched a career-high ranking of No. 31 for 18 year olds in the Eastern section.

Helt feels that, “This might be the fi rst year in a long time that we are solid from top to bottom. Zach Hascoe, Ben Young and Dan Bednarek have all returned playing better than ever and they will round out the middle and bottom of our lineup.”

The men will open the 2008 spring season at home against Duquesne on Feb. 2. The Bison will host additional home matches against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Feb. 23, Fairleigh Dickinson on March 22, UMBC on March 29, Navy on March 30 and Delaware on April 22. On the road, Bucknell will face Quinnipiac, St. Bonaventure, Brown, Villanova, Mount St. Mary’s, Colgate, Binghamton, Penn State, Lehigh, Army, Lafayette and Blooms-burg.

“Our schedule is stronger than ever and we plan to use that level of play to prepare us for Patriot League competition,” said Helt, “This year, our goal is to play in the championship match. Our main competition will still be against Navy and Army, but I feel we’ve taken a huge step closer to being able to compete with those strong programs.” The 2008 season will wrap up with the Patriot League Championships, set for April 25 – 27 in Hamilton, N.Y., at Colgate.

The Bucknell women’s tennis team is coming off an 8-16 overall record and 2-2 record in the Patriot League last season, advancing to the championship match in the league tourna-ment for the third straight year. The Bison return 11 letterwinners from last season: senior captain Caitlin Baffa, juniors Tiffany Card, Paulina Gamboa, JoAnna Grossman and Ca-mille Simonetti, and sophomores Carlin Calcaterra, Eva Lipiec, Megan Lee, Kirstyn Sotak, Tania Varela and Renee Weissend. Additionally, Bucknell welcomes three incoming fresh-men to the 2007-08 squad, Dara Dwojewski, Lauren Lucido and Lauren Rottkamp.

“Last year we were able to work hard to overcome some adversity in our program and we ultimately found ourselves back in the championship match,” said head coach Rebecca Helt, “This year, being healthy, strong and having returned all but one of our starters, this team looks better than ever.”

Helt notes that “Our top six will be as strong as any in the league, and it won’t be easy to decide the starting line up with the level of depth we have on this team. Our focus will be on executing solid doubles play to pick up the early point. Then, I think we’ll have strong performances from our singles players, particularly in league play.”

“Tania Varela and Paulina Gamboa return as two of the best singles players in the league,” said Helt. Varela was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year last season and also earned a spot on the All-Patriot League First Team in her freshman year. Gamboa also earned a spot on the First Team All-Patriot League squad last season and was the only Bison to post an undefeated record against Patriot League opponents. “Carlin Calcaterra and Caitlin Baffa will once again make an impact on our starting line up,” said Helt. Calcaterra went 10-22 overall in singles play and Baffa went 5-6 overall in singles play last season. Helt also noted that, “We add some incredible freshmen talent; Lauren Lucido, Dara Dwojeski and Lauren Rottkamp all look to impact our starting singles and doubles line-up.”

Helt feels that “Our schedule is stronger than ever and we’ll use it to prepare us for Patriot League matches.” Bucknell will open the 2008 spring season at home against Duquesne on Feb. 2. The Bison will host additional home matches against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Feb. 23, Fairleigh Dickinson on March 22, UMBC on March 29, Pittsburgh on April 4, Lehigh on April 7, and Delaware on April 22. On the road, the Bison will face Cornell, Quinnipiac, Syracuse, St. Bonaventure, Brown, Villanova, Mount St. Mary’s, Colgate, Army, Lafayette, Binghamton and Bloomsburg. The women will end the 2008 season at the Patriot League Championships, set for April 18 – 20 at Army at West Point, N.Y.

Alexander Anderson (’71): A three-year letterman in tennis and captain his senior year. Anderson had a career singles record of 38-2. He continues to hold the school record for consecutive match victories at 33, and is third in career match winning percentage at .950. Anderson entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1999.

Stephen W. Baird (’72): The 1971 MAC fall tennis champion, Baird was an Eastern singles semifi nalist and doubles fi nalist in 1972 and had a career 38-1 singles record. President of the American Platform Tennis Association, Baird is a fi ve-time national champion in the sport. Baird entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.

Marjorie A. Deck (’73): Co-captain of the fi eld hockey and basketball teams, Deck was also undefeated in tennis dual matches in her career and ranked fi fth in the East as a senior. Deck is often referred to as one of the pioneers of women’s tennis at Bucknell having played on the team before women’s sports gained varsity status in the fall of 1973. Women’s tennis was given varsity status only months after Deck’s graduation. Her success on the club team had much to do with the upgrade of women’s tennis to varsity status. Deck entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1989.

William C. Bartol (’87): William Bartol, a pioneer of baseball and tennis at Bucknell and head of the mathematics department for 46 years, Bartol is generally given credit for creating the nickname “Bisons” for Bucknell athletic teams. An outstanding student and athlete as an undergraduate, he also served as head of the engineering department and as director of the observatory. Bartol played on baseball teams that lost only one game in four years while helping raise funds in support of the Athletic Association. About 1910, he suggested that the nickname “Bisons” be adopted for Bucknell teams because of the proximity of the campus to areas populated by the American bison in the late 1700s. Bartol, who died in 1940 at the age of 92, was connected with Bucknell longer than any other person in its history as a student, teacher and university historian. Bartol entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1987.

Ed Hess (’90): One of the best tennis players in Bucknell history, Hess held the school record for singles victories at 60 until the fall of 2007, while accu-mulating only three singles losses during his career. He stands fourth on the singles-doubles combined win list at 101 and is eighth on Bucknell’s all-time doubles victories list. Hess won the East Coast Conference singles title in 1987, 1989, and 1990, in addition to two conference doubles titles. His teams won three ECC team championships, posting a 38-12 record in those seasons. Hess entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2003.

THE PLAN FOR BUCKNELLTHE PLAN FOR BUCKNELL

Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,400 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leader-ship. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a diff erence and have a positive impact on the world.

In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed Th e Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.”

Th e Plan comprises fi ve strategies:

Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation;

Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a resi-dential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility;

Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and inter-cultural world;

Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off -campus study and faculty research;

Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our fi nancial future.

Th e Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
