The Sundays after Pentecost comprise the longest season of the

Church Year. After spending a half-year looking at Christ’s life for us,

we now spend a half-year looking at Christ’s life in us. By the power

of the Spirit working through the Word and Sacraments, Christ

produces spiritual growth within us. That growth is symbolized by

the green colors that drape the church for much of this season.

God Speaks Even in this post-modern age, everyone believes in truth. The college

philosophy professor claims, “There is no such thing as absolute truth!” But is he not in

that statement claiming he absolutely believes a truth? Everyone believes in truth.

Everyone conducts their life according to what they believe to be true. Which raises the

question: is what you are building your life, your future, your dreams on actually true?

Here’s the test. Have you built your life on what God says or on human ideas? Only the

truth that God speaks is a sure foundation for your life.

Over the course of the summer we will take a closer look at our lives as Christians Living in

God’s World. While life in God’s world is beautiful, it is not without its difficulties and

challenges. Yet, we take comfort and find strength in the fact that the God who did all the

work for us in procuring our salvation, continues to be hard at work in our lives every

single day. Our worship will follow this pattern:

INVOCATION

M: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Most merciful God,

C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves.

We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,

so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,

To the glory of your holy name. Amen.

M: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God

forgives us all our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I de-

clare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of

the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

The Rite of Holy Baptism may take place here.

M: Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;

C: incline your ears to the words of my mouth!

M: I will utter teachings from of old,

C: things that our fathers have told us.

M: We will not hide them from their children,

C: but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord,

M: and his might, and the wonders that he has done.

C: so that they should set their hope in God.

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 78

After a brief musical introduction, the congregations joins to sing “You Are My All In All.”

Please note that after the second verse, we sing the final refrain twice. The second time through the

final refrain, it is a half step higher.

The children may remain in their seats for the Children’s Message.

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord!

The Word

M: O God,

you rule over all things in wisdom and kindness.

Take away everything that may be harmful

and give us whatever is good;

through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

FIRST LESSON Deuteronomy 11:18-21

18 “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in

your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as

frontlets between your eyes. 19 You shall teach them to your children, talking

of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the

way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 20 You shall write them on the

doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21 that your days and the days of

your children may be multiplied in the land that the LORD swore to your

fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.”

VERSE OF THE DAY

Cantor: Your word is a lamp to my feet

And a light for my path.

Refrain

Psalm 119:105

This version of the verse of the day is sung in what is called “echo style,” very prominent in the early

Christian church. A cantor sings. The congregation then echoes the cantor.

Refrain

When God spoke these words through the ministry of Moses, he meant for them to have a home in our

hearts and souls, rather than just tied to our hands and heads and written on our doorposts and gates.

SECOND LESSON 2 Peter 1:19-2:3

19 And we have the prophetic word

more fully confirmed, to which you will do

well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in

a dark place, until the day dawns and the

morning star rises in your

hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no

prophecy of Scripture comes from

someone's own interpretation. 21 For no

prophecy was ever produced by the will of

man, but men spoke from God as they were

carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2:1But false prophets also arose among

the people, just as there will be false

teachers among you, who will secretly

bring in destructive heresies, even denying

the Master who bought them, bringing

upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And

many will follow their sensuality, and

because of them the way of truth will be

blasphemed. 3 And in their greed they will

exploit you with false words. Their

condemnation from long ago is not idle,

and their destruction is not asleep.

False teachers give their own interpretation, suited for themselves or their audience.

Not so true prophesy! Man does not contribute the message, but the mouth for

God’s message. God’s truth brings all false teaching and false teachers to ruin.

HYMN OF THE DAY My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less

Page 11: 200614 - Pentecost 2 - LIVING IN GOD'S WORLD - God Speaks ...€¦ · 14/06/2020  · LIVING IN GOD’S WORLDLIVING IN GOD’S WORLD God Plans God Calls God Controls God Hears God

11

SERMON Matthew 7:15-29

15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in

sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious

wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people

pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from

thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a

bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad

fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree

that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into

the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will

enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the

will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me

on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name

and in your name drive out demons and in your name

perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I

never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine

and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his

house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose,

and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did

not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But

everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put

them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house

on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the

winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a

great crash.” 28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the

crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as

one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

The foundation of rock-solid truth—God’s Word— can withstand any storm. That is why faithful ministers

of the Word proclaim the truth and faithful hearers of the Word put Christ’s words into practice.

CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Coming Up at Beautiful Savior Moncks Corner This Week

Tuesday, June 16 at 4:00PM—Youth Catechism Class meets via Google Meet.

Sunday, June 21 at 10:30AM—Worship: LIVING IN GOD’S WORLD—God Calls What explanation is

there for whom God calls? He calls such sinful and weak people. Only mercy can explain the men

he chose in this Sunday’s lessons: a despised tax collector, an exiled killer, a persecutor of

Christians. However, God not only graciously calls sinners to public ministry (apostles, prophets,

and pastors), but ultimately he calls every Christian in the same way. There are so many people out

there who would represent God better than us. They don’t lose God in a pile of daily

responsibilities like we do. They don’t question God’s ways as much as we do. The only answer to

the question, “Why did God call me?” is his mercy that bends down from the perfection of heaven

to touch my imperfect life with grace, forgiveness, and love.

Looking Ahead

WELS News

Beautiful Savior is a member of WELS, the third largest Lutheran Church

body with congregations around the world.

Our hearts ache as we reflect on the tragic death of George Floyd in

Minneapolis. We are also grieved because of the other innocent lives that

have been lost and because of the many people who have been injured in

the aftermath of the Minneapolis tragedy. Added to that, we are saddened

by the widespread destruction and theft of property and businesses.

As Christians, we mourn the loss of any human life, especially when a

person’s time of grace, given by God, is cut short. We understand that

when injustice or crime occurs, society rightly calls for the guilty to be

punished and for efforts to prevent such things from happening again. We

support the right of citizens, guaranteed by the United States Constitution,

to protest peacefully the action or inaction of their government and to use

lawful means to correct injustice. But we also recognize that when people

break the law, it is the God-given responsibility of the government to

protect the life, property, and safety of all citizens.

And we pray. We pray that God would bring comfort and healing to all

who have been affected by these events. We pray that God would heal our

nation and restore peace to our cities and towns. We ask God to open the

eyes of those who mistakenly believe that they can right one wrong by

committing another. We plead with God to give wisdom and courage to

those who are entrusted with positions of leadership on the local, state,

and national level. We ask God’s forgiveness for our own lack of love and

compassion for our neighbors and for taking for granted the peace and

freedom that God has provided to us. We ask God to confirm in us the

conviction that racism in any form is contrary to the Christian faith and

inconsistent with the love that God expects us to have for all. We pray for

a government and for institutions that strive to see to it that all people are

treated with equality and justice.

We look to God to bless our land with justice and peace. Only he can do

that. On our part, our responsibility as Christians is to speak the truth of

God’s Word in love. Our mission as God’s church on earth is to proclaim

God’s call to repentance and to share the saving and powerful message of

the gospel of Jesus Christ. “We preach Christ crucified!” (1 Corinthians

1:23) It’s that message alone that can lead people to know the true peace

and security of sins forgiven and guilt removed. It’s that message alone

that can create hearts of faith that respond to God’s grace with love and

compassion. It’s that message that alone can move people, no matter

what their vocation, to express their faith as Christians by living in a way

that serves God and benefits the people around them.

when injustice or crime occurs, society rightly calls for the guilty to be

punished and for efforts to prevent such things from happening again. We

support the right of citizens, guaranteed by the United States Constitution,

to protest peacefully the action or inaction of their government and to use

lawful means to correct injustice.
