From the Department Executive OfficerThisSummaryofActivitiesdocumentsand

celebrates the 2006 accomplishments of thefaculty,staff,andstudentsofTheUniversityofIowa’sDepartmentofCivilandEnvironmentalEngineering (CEE). The Summary lists CEE’sgraduating classes of undergraduate studentsand graduate students. It also lists CEE’s cur-rentbodyofgraduate-studentstudents, faculty, researchprofessionals, staff, adjunctfaculty, and CEE’s AdvisoryBoard.Further, it servesasacollectiverecordofthepapers,books, and reports that CEEpeople published in 2006, aswell as briefly indicating the range of professional serviceactivitieswithwhichtheywereengaged.ThetabletailingthisintroductionlistssomequickreferencefactsaboutCEE.

Inadditiontodocument-ing accomplishments andlistingthenamesofthemanypeopleengagedinCEE’sac-tivities, this Summary is anoccasiontothankthepeopleandorganizationsthathavesupportedCEEandits students during 2006. That support signifi-cantlyenhancesthequalityoftheeducationandresearchexperiencesthatCEEoffersstudents.MycolleaguesandIverymuchappreciatethesupportgiventoCEE.

Threefacultymemberswithprimaryappoint-mentsinCEEwerepromotedduring2006.Also,onefacultymemberwithasecondaryappoint-mentinCEEwaspromoted.Drs.AsgharBhattiand Colby Swan, who both hold 100-percentprimaryappointmentsinCEE,werepromotedtotherankofProfessor.Dr.WalterIllman,whoholds a 10-percent appointment in CEE, waspromoted to the rank of Associate Professor

with tenure. His main faculty appointment isintheGeoscienceDepartment.Dr.PaulHanley,whohasasecondaryappointmentinCEE,waspromotedtotherankofAssociateProfessorwithtenure.HisprimaryappointmentisintheUrbanandRegionalPlanningProgram.

BuildinguponCEE’sreviewandplanningefforts during the previousthreeormoreyears,CEEthor-oughlyrevampeditsStrategicPlan. Faculty and staff viewthe Plan’s development andimplementation activities asan on-going effort, a projectrequiring continuous work.The Plan, designed to be a“continuous work in prog-ress,” will evolve over timein accordance with annualassessment of progress, aswellasadjustmentofprioritiesandtasksinaccordancewithdevelopmentsinopportunityandneed.Inbroadterms,thePlanlinksCEE’sdevelopmentto the conceptual goals ex-pressedinthestrategicplans

formulatedbytheCollegeofEngineeringandTheUniversityofIowa.

ThisSummarymoreoverisachancetothankCEEAdministrativeAssistantGinnyMillerandCEESecretary JudyHolland for their smoothrunning of CEE’s office and overall support pro-videdtoeveryoneinvolvedwithCEE.ThanksalsotoCollinJustforhisworkasmanageroftheenvironmentallaboratoriesassociatedwithCEE. • CEE has 2 office staff, 1 research assistant (environmental), and 2 post-doctoral scholars. Two additional office staff members work solely as editorial staff for the Journal Environmental Science&Technology.Anadditionalresearchassistantandpost-doctoralscholarworkingwithCEEfacultyandarestaffmembersinIIHR.

•CEEhad11Adjunctfacultymembers,and7Secondaryfacultymembers.

•CEEhadanundergraduateenrollmentof150students(Spring’06),andgraduated35B.Sc.studentsinAY05-06.

• ThemajorityofB.Sc.studentscomefromEasternIowaandWesternIllinois.

•AsurveyoffreshmenenteringtheB.Sc.(Civil)programrevealsthatmajor(~80%)interestisinthe“structures”areaofcivil.

•Ph.D.enrollmentwas84;13graduatedin2006.

•M.S.studentenrollmentwas52;9(thesis),6(non-thesis)graduatedin2006.

•Facultyandstaffannuallypublishanaverageof1.8journalpapersperhead.

•Researchexpenditurestalliedto$10.406MduringFY05-06.

•Thebalanceofwomentomenundergraduatestudentswas17%to83%.

Statics Class Experiments Twohands-onstaticslabswereintroducedintheFall2006semester.Over200studentsfromProfessor Bhatti’s and Professor Grosland’sclassesusedrecentlypurchasedequipmentintheStructures,Mechanics,andMaterialsTeachingLab(G430)toinvestigatetheimpactofforcesandtheirreactionsinoureverydayworld. The first lab dealt with the forces on an inclined plane.Ofthethreerequiredvalues(massofthecart,hangingmass,andangleofinclination),thestudents were given two and had to calculatethe thirdso that thesystemremained instaticequilibrium.Theythensetuptheinclinedplaneaccordingtotheirscenariotoseeiftheircalcula-tionswerecorrect. Thesecondlabconsistedofa“bridge”madeupofameterstickhangingfromforcescalesoneachend.Byplacingahangingmasssomewherealong the bridge, they used the equations ofequilibrium to find the reactions on the ends of thebridgeandcheckedtheirworkbycomparingtheiranswerstothereadingonthescales. Future statics labs will include hands-onexperiencewithfrictionandcentroids.

Design for the Developing World

NewCourseTaughtinFall2006ByCraigJust053:141–DesignfortheDevelopingWorld Thiscourseprovidesourstudentstheop-portunitytoworkininterdisciplinaryteamstoproposesolutionstoproblemspeoplefaceinthe“developingworld.” Studentswillinteractwithlocalcommunitypartners to explore the service-learningobjectivesdesignedintothecourse. Appropriatetechnologiestoimprovewaterand sanitation, energy, housing, and healthwillbestudiedanddeveloped. Communitybuildingstrategies,participatorymethodsandothertechniquesessentialtoagooddesignwillbeexplored.

The University of Iowa American SocietyofCivilEngineersChapterhadanotherveryactiveandsuccessfulyear.Thechapterhelditsbi-annualroadcleanupfollowedbyapicnicandsoftballgamewiththeCEEfaculty.Theannualstudent-facultybowlingchallengewasalsoabighitandanicestressrelieverrightbeforefallfinals. ASCE also had many social events co-hostedwiththelocalYoungerMembersGroupwherestudentsgottomeetprofessionalsfromthearea. ThestudentchapteralsocompetesannuallyinboththeASCE’sNationalSteelBridgeandConcrete Canoe Competitions. Steel Bridgehastheprimarygoalofdesigningastrong,yetlightweightbridge.Buildingtheconcretecanoeisayear-longprojectwherestudentsworkinagrouptodesignandbuildacanoemadeoflightweight concrete. In addition to provid-

inggreatopportunitiestoapplytheirin-classknowledge,studentshaveplentyofopportuni-tiestobuildtheirteamskillsandhavefunwitheachproject. TheSteelBridgeteamtraveledtotheUni-versity of Wisconsin-Platteville for the an-nualRegionalConferenceandSteelBridgeCompetition.Theteamcompetedhard,and,whiletheydidn’tleavewithatrophy,theywonamoralvictoryastheywatchedalloftheirhardworkpayoffasthebridgewithheldtheappliedloading. TheUniversityofIowaConcreteCanoeteamrecentlyrepeatedtheir lastyear’sgreatper-formancewhentheyonceagaintooksecondplaceintheConcreteCanoeMidwestRegionalCompetition.Thecompetition,heldonApril29th,washostedbytheUniversityofIowa.Thewinneroftheregionalcompetitiongoes

totheNationals.Theparticipantsarejudgedbasedonfourparts:designpaper,presenta-tion,aestheticsandracing.Eachareacarriesan equivalent weight towards the final score. The racing involves five separate races: two man sprint, two women sprint, three manendurance, three women endurance, and afourpersonco-edsprint. InadditiontotheUniversityofIowateam,captainedbyEricDeanandSaraWalsh,otherparticipatingschoolsweretheUniversityofWisconsin-Platteville (first place winner), IowaStateUniversity(thirdplace),Univer-sityofMinnesota,UniversityofMinnesota-Mankatostate,NorthDakotaStateUniversityandSouthDakotaStateUniversity. Allinall,ASCEhadaverysuccessfulyear,andlooksforwardtoitsfutureaccomplishmentsattheUniversityofIowa.

Events and PhotosEngineers for a Sustainable World Conference

ThenationalEngineersforaSustainableWorldConferencebrought350peopletoIowaCityfromaroundtheworldtoenvisionsustainabilityforthe“developed”worldand the“developing”worldmadepossible throughpracticalactionandpartnerships. In addition to hosting the 2006 nationalESW conference, the chapter pioneered andled theUIGreenCampus Initiativeand theUIProgressiveCareerFair.Themembershaveheld various campus leadership positionsincludingstudentbodypresident.Membersserveonthecampus-wideEnergyConserva-tionAdvisoryCouncilchargedwithreducingour$55milliondollarannualenergybillby

$750,000 (As of 2006, $2,000,000 in savingshavebeenobtained). In partnership with the Iowa Department ofNaturalResourcesandUIFacilitiesManagement,the EPA P3 Sustainability Competition project,theP3Exchange,wonhonorablementionattheawardsceremonyinWashington,D.C., inMay2006.OneofthememberswasshowcasedduringaNationalCarbonConferencebecausehebikedandtookatraintotheconferencetoreducehisgreenhousegasemissions. Engineers for a Sustainable World has alsoparticipatedinformulatingcurriculumfortwocourses:Sustainable Systems,andDesign for the Developing World.

A team of senior Civil Engineering studentschosetocombinetheirextramuralinterestswiththe curriculum and are building a footbridgeforacommunityinruralPeru.Theirinterestinprovidingassistancetothoseinthedevelopingworld, while fulfilling the senior-design project componentofthecurriculumhasresultedinthechallengeofdesigningandconstructinga15meterspanfootbridgeinYavina,Peru. TeammembersincludedAveryBang,SergioA-wan, Ryan Wallace, Jenna Kusmierek andTaraOlds,allactivemembersoftheUniversityof IowachapterofEngineersforaSustainableWorld(ESW). ThegrouphasteamedwithBridges to Prosperity,an organization that has helped facilitate sitelocationandlocallogistics.FollowingtheinitialsurveyvisitinNovember2006,theteamhasbe-gundesigningthebridgethatwillbeconstructedentirelyoftimberandreinforcingsteeltensionrods,tobetransportedbydonkeytothesite.
