YVR Soars As An Economic Engine For B.C.Anew economic impact study confirms that
Vancouver International Airport (YVR)continues to be an integral part of British
Columbia’s thriving economy, accounting forsome 26,700 direct jobs and $6.8-billion intotal economic output. The results werereleased earlier this month by VancouverInternational Airport Authority president andCEO Larry Berg in a speech to the VancouverBoard of Trade.
Since the last study in 2000, YVR has
maintained its employment base, despite theaviation industry’s downturn following 9/11,SARS and record high fuel prices. The num-bers of jobs, economic output and GDP haveall grown over the past five years, eventhough the number of employers has droppedto 360 from 400 in that same period.
“Our industry has gone through a numberof changes and faced some significant chal-lenges,” said Berg. “The airport businesscommunity has demonstrated an ability to
adapt and even grow during some toughtimes, solidifying YVR’s role as an economicgenerator in its own right, and a facilitator ofprovincial job creation.”
The continued growth of the airport’semployment and economic impact between2000 and 2005 is due to several factorsincluding:• A 15 per cent growth in the number of

flights to destinations outside NorthAmerica;
• Construction projects, such as theDomestic Terminal upgrade. In 2004alone, 410 person years of construc-tion employment was generated;
• Continued growth in air cargo,including the development of a UPShub at YVR;
• Growth of WestJet and otherdomestic carriers;
• Expansion of retail services in theU.S. terminal.
The arrival of each passenger andcargo flight generates jobs in passen-ger, cargo and aircraft handling aswell as with services offered at theairport such as retail concessions andcar rental agencies. The study foundthat each time an Asia-Pacific air ser-vice with a local crew lands at YVR,close to 795 hours of employment aregenerated. Over a year, the twice-daily service generates 369 personyears of employment.
“As YVR grows and develops itsgateway advantage, the airport’s eco-nomic impact will also grow,” saidBerg.
The gateway strategy promisesadditional employment at YVR: each1,000 origin-destination passengersgenerate 3,300 hours of employmentat YVR while each 1,000 passengersconnecting from Asia at YVR gener-ate 4,900 hours of employment, dueto additional employment from theconnecting flight.
The study, conducted byInterVistas Consulting, is the sixtheconomic impact study of YVR.Since 1994, the first study followingthe transfer of management from thegovernment to the Airport Authority,some 8,800 direct person years ofemployment have been created.

Known in the CanadianAir Force by the callsign “Richmo,” and
more recently at YVR as“Plumber 13,” CraigRichmond will now have anew title: president andCEO of NassauInternational Airport in TheBahamas.
Born in Vancouver andraised in Kamloops, Craigjoined the Canadian Air Force at theage of 17, earning his wings in 1981.After a decade of flying CF-18Hornets and CF-104 Starfighters athome and abroad, Craig returned toschool, earning an MBA at theUniversity of Manitoba. Unawarethat airport operations was in hisfuture, Craig worked as a consultantin IT project management, forestryand small business.
It was as a consultant that Craigwas first introduced to the VancouverInternational Airport Authority in1995. Initially tasked with developinga new AVOP program, his success ledto a full-time position, and eventualpromotion to vice president of AirportOperations in 1998. In this role, Craigwas challenged with the rapid growthof Vancouver International Airportand numerous changes to the air trav-el industry.
The most dramatic events ofCraig’s tenure were those surround-ing September 11, 2001, the recoveryat YVR and the ensuing decline in airtravel. In the weeks and months fol-
lowing the tragedy,Craig’s leadership wasinstrumental in theresumption of regular air-port schedules and duties,and in the implementa-tion of increased security.
Throughout his careerat YVR, Craig gained theutmost respect for theprofessionalism of theYVR team and their con-
tributions to the success of VancouverInternational Airport. “I was alwaysaware that even though I was often infront of the cameras, many, manygreat people were actually doing thework, and making YVR the fantasticairport that it is today.”
As he hands off his portfolio to hissuccessor, Paul Levy, Craig looks for-ward to his new role as president andCEO. His vision is to transformNassau Airport into the “Jewel of theCaribbean” taking full advantage ofthe colourful, rhythmic and welcom-ing culture of The Bahamas. Craigsteps into the role with a clear man-date: to plan, build and operate a newterminal while making improvementsto the existing facilities.
For anyone eager to pursue acareer in airport management, Craigsays, “Arm yourself with solid skills,take advantage of lucky breaks and beready to jump into a new role at anytime.”
It looks like Craig’s philosophyhas served him well.

PRESIDENT’S CORNERBy LARRY BERG, President and Chief Executive Officer
YVR By The Numbers
The Airport Authority’s mandate is to ensure YVRmeets the growing demand for air travel, andcontinues to realize its potential as a premier
global gateway and economic generator for BritishColumbia. So, we spend a lot of time thinking aboutthe future.
Sometimes, though, it’s good to pause and take alook at where we’re at now, because we’ve certainlycome a long way since we assumed responsibility forthe airport in 1992. That year, we had about 700 take-offs and landings a day, served 9.9-million passen-gers, and handled 144,000 tonnes of cargo. Weoffered scheduled non-stop service to 10 internationaldestinations and eight in the United States.
YVR now averages about 800 aircraft arrivals anddepartures each day and in 2005, we welcomed morethan 16.4-million travellers, a new record, and handled223,700 tonnes of cargo. We now provide schedulednon-stop service to 18 international destinations and23 in the United States.
Where does our traffic come from? Domestic pas-sengers make up slightly more than half of the annualtraffic through YVR. Transborder passengers accountfor about a quarter of our yearly visitors; another 22per cent is made up of International passengers, withAsia-Pacific travellers at about 15 per cent andEuropean travellers at about seven per cent. The bal-ance is comprised largely of travellers from Mexicoand the Caribbean.
Of all the passengers who pass through YVR, abouta third connect to onward flights. Approximately 65per cent of YVR passengers are tourists – residentsfrom outside of B.C. travelling for leisure purposes –
while 30 per cent are travelling for business. Demographically speaking, nearly 80 per cent of
YVR passengers are over the age of 35. Thefemale/male split is nearly even, at 53 per cent and 47per cent, respectively.
That’s a look at our passengers, but where are theygoing? The top three destinations to and from YVRare, in order: Toronto, Calgary and Los Angeles. Theshortest flight from Vancouver is service to Nanaimo,which clocks in at 24 minutes. The longest non-stopflight offered from YVR is to Manila, more than 10,548kilometres away – that flight takes 14-and-a-halfhours.
This snapshot of where we are now also gives us aview of where we’re going. When we look to ourgrowth areas, we see increases in several sectors,most notably the European sector, where traffic wasup by 11.6 per cent in 2005 compared with 2004. Wealso saw growth in domestic traffic, which increasedby 4.5 per cent; transborder (Canada-U.S.) traffic,where we saw a 3.6 per cent increase; and Asia Pacifictraffic, which was up by a moderate 1.9 per cent.
With Approved Destination Status from thePeople’s Republic of China nearing completion, weexpect a more dramatic rise in Asia-Pacific traffic inthe years to come, as Chinese visitors find it easier tovisit Vancouver for tourism and leisure. With a city andprovince this beautiful, there is little doubt that trav-ellers the world over will continue to find reasons tovisit Vancouver, and that’s good news for YVR and forthe many businesses and services that depend on theairport and the tourism industry for their continuedsuccess.

Craig Richmond: S on the Compass… By Artie Chumpol
Over the last few years, technologyhas changed dramatically, makingimmediacy the watchword.
Travellers can now conveniently‘time shift’ and ‘place shift’ theiractivities, allowing them to performthese activities wherever it’s conve-nient.
For example, companies that pro-vide short-term and no-term rentalsfor travellers needing access tophones and lap top computers havebecome increasingly popular.
Since 1987, Cita Cellular has been
offering the convenience of short-term and no-term phone rentals.Taking advantage of changes in wire-less speed, along with the increasedcomputing power of cell phones andsmart phones, Cita offers equipmentwith three new services:
Visual GPS Tracking. Travellerssee a map with clear directions andvisual horizon-based views of a loca-tion; making it easy to track the desti-nation and if an incorrect detour ismade, directions immediately showhow to correct the travel route.
Cell Phone Translator. Travellersspeak into their cell phone and itrepeats the sentence in the new lan-guage of choice. It is also possible totype the sentence and read the transla-tion.
Email/Internet Accessibility.Using web-client access or ‘push’emails, travellers can view theiremails at a later time if Internet acces-sibility is unavailable. A built-in cam-era can photocopy documents anddata can be entered from the alphanu-meric keyboard. In turn, data can be
collected and stored for later use orsent to a location for immediateaction.
The equipment may be rented on ashort- or no-term basis from theTourism Info Centres at YVR’s
Domestic and International Terminallocations, or from the downtownlocation at 200 Burrard Street.
For further information contactDebra Danny at Cita Cellular at 604-657-5020 or visit www.cita.info.

Carry-On Luggage Packing TipsSummer is one of the busiest travel
periods and with increased securi-ty restrictions early airport arrival
is advised. To alleviate stress and pre-vent travel delays, contact your air-line to find out the number and size ofitems permitted as carry-on luggage.
The following are some considera-tions when packing:

MONEY MATTERS By Peter Kutney, Equinox Financial Group
Systematic Withdrawal Plan: A Great Strategy For Retirement Income
Mutual fund investors wanting regularincome from their investments have aunique and attractive option available: the
Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP). WithSWPs, investors are able to redeem modestportions of their mutual funds on a regularbasis while keeping the majority of the mutualfund invested.
The strategy is simple: reap rewards whilekeeping your money working. SWPs provideregular income while avoiding the capital ero-sion of a large, one-time withdrawal.Incremental withdrawals allow an investor’snest egg to continue increasing since most of itremains in the mutual fund.
In addition, SWPs offer flexibility as theinvestor chooses when and how the with-drawals will occur: for example, monthly, quar-terly, or semi-annually. What’s more, instruc-tions can be changed at any time. Generally,SWPs do not incur administration fees and theinvestor can specify payment to be received bycheque or direct deposit to a bank account.
SWPs offer numerous benefits. Incrementalwithdrawals help weather the natural ups-and-downs of market forces, as funds are redeemedduring different months at different prices,
avoiding a large one-time redemption at anunfavourable price. With a well-planned andcarefully monitored SWP, the bulk of one’sinvestment may grow quickly enough to match,or even outpace, the rate of withdrawals.However, investors must ensure withdrawalsdon’t exceed the mutual fund’s performance, orthe investment could be eroded considerably.
Numerous studies examining the amount ofcapital that can be withdrawn annually withoutdepleting capital, using back-tested withdraw-al rates of four- to eight per cent over a 40- to50-year period, have been done. The conclu-sion? With a balanced portfolio of stocks andbonds, it is possible to withdraw four- to fiveper cent of your account value each year, withcapital being exhausted in only the mostextreme “bear” market.
Who uses SWPs? Retirees wishing to sup-plement their CCP or OAS income are primecandidates. Also, people who have made sub-stantial past investments for a special purpose,such as an emergency fund to supplementunemployment, funds to finance a sabbaticalyear, or income for an entrepreneur in the earlystages of a new business. A SWP can betremendously useful in a variety of situations.
Finally, a word about the tax treatment ofSWPs. SWP payments from a RegisteredSavings Plan (RSP) or Retirement IncomeFund (RIF), are 100 per cent taxable whilemonthly payments from a non-RSP accountare non-taxable. A T3 tax form will be issuedfor the share of dividend and interest incomereceived from the fund.
In summary, a SWP offers these importantfeatures:• Regular income allowing capital the poten-
tial to continue growing;• Predictable income, making budgeting easi-
er; • Control over where and when payments are
deposited; • Flexibility to change the structure at any
time.For more information on SWPs, contact
your investment advisor.
