Welcome, 2005 has been a remarkable year for the community foundation of South Puget Sound due to the incredible generosity of our community, and the dedication and insight of our staff and Board of Directors. We capitalized on the work we did in 2004 to strengthen the operations of the Foundation and are inspired by the strong momentum we have going forward. Maya Angelou once said, “When we cast our bread upon the waters, we can presume that someone downstream from another will profit from that grantor’s gift.” Our generous community has cast that bread. In 2005: • Over $282,000 was distributed as grants and awards • $880,000 was received in gifts and contributions • 9 new charitable funds were established • 25 scholarships were awarded to high school seniors and

returning college students • Total assets grew to over $2.9 Million

Many of these grants are from donor advised funds, where the donor advised us on where she would like the distributions to be made. Other grants are from unrestricted funds, in which case our grants committee, comprised of knowledgeable board mem-bers and local leaders, reviews requests for funding, visits various sites and makes grant recommendations to the Board. In 2005 we created a few fund, the Community Youth Fund. This fund was seeded with money from the Walter A. Bratton Memorial Fund. Established as an endowed fund, grant money will be available for years to come to support programs that serve youth. This fund is open to contributions in any amount from anyone in the community. We also created a new type of fund, an acorn fund, which is a program for building an endowed fund over time. We are continuing to grow in 2006 and invite you to be come a part of our community of giving.

A community foundation can provide funding in many areas that enhance the quality of life. That includes building on the community’s strengths and helping to fill areas of need. The pie chart shows the breakdown of all grants awarded by category in 2005.

Why do people give through the Foundation? Funds established at the Foundation help donors invest in the causes they care about most.

Charitable Funds Giving options. Choose the one that’s right

for you.

Donor Advised Funds. You can have ongoing involvement in the use of your gift. You work with our staff, identifying ways to use dollars from the Donor Advised Fund you establish to address the issues and needs you care about cost. Your recommendations are submitted to our local board for approval; we then distribute grant dollars.

Unrestricted Funds. Your gift can address ever-changing community needs—including future needs that often cannot be anticipated at the time your gift is made. We evaluate all aspects of community well-being—arts and culture, economic development, education, environment, health and human services, recreation, and more. The flexibility of your unrestricted gift enables your community foundation’s board to respond to the community’s most pressing needs, today and tomorrow.

Field of Interest Funds. Target your gift to address needs in an important area of community life. Arts. Conservation. .Aging. At-risk youth. You identify your personal interest area when making your gift; our board awards grants; grants are then made to support the programs and organizations that are making a difference in the area you select.

Scholarships. You can invest your gift in our community’s future and show students you care, all with the guidance and personal services of your community foundation. You determine the criteria students must meet to receive the scholarship you establish. With your assistance, students achieve their academic and career-oriented goals—from preschool to postgraduate work.

Designated Funds. You can direct your gift to a specific nonprofit organization or purpose. Help provide ongoing funding for a senior center, museum, or virtually any nonprofit charitable organization. Nonprofit organizations can use a Designated Fund through the community foundation to build their endowment and enhance their ability to accept large and complex gifts.
