Photogrammetric Award (Fairchild)

2004 Recipient: Dr. J. Chris McGlone Dr. J. Chris McGlone has made several outstanding contributions through his R&D efforts sincereceiving his PhD from Purdue in 1980. McGlone is a senior systems scientist in the School ofComputer Science of Carnegie Mellon University and has been a member of the research facultysince 1992. He received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky, and M.S. andPh.D. degrees in Civil Engineering (Photogrammetry) from Purdue University. His thesis implementedthe block adjustment of multispectral scanner data, including geometric information for additionalstrength, and the evaluation of the block adjustment results.

McGlone’s career in both industry and academe has been focused on the combination ofphotogrammetry and computer vision. At H. Dell Foster Associates he worked on industrialinspection applications of machine vision, while at Loral Fairchild Systems he was involved in thedesign and modeling of reconnaissance cameras and in the application of computer visionalgorithms to reconnaissance imagery.

In 1992 he joined the Digital Mapping Laboratory, where he is working on applications ofphotogrammetry to automated cartographic feature extraction. Specific research topics haveincluded vanishing point analysis and the use of simultaneous bundle adjustment with geometricconstraints to construct precise building models and to evaluate feature matching and geometrichypotheses.

McGlone is a co-author of the textbook Introduction to Modern Photogrammetry and is theeditor of the Fifth Edition of the Manual of Photogrammetry, the standard photogrammetricreference published by ASPRS. He also contributed chapters to the manuals DigitalPhotogrammetry: An Addendum to the Manual of Photogrammetry and Non-TopographicPhotogrammetry.

McGlone is a member of IEEE and ASPRS. He has served on the program committee of severalconferences, as the ASPRS correspondent to Commission II of the International Society for Photo-grammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), and is currently secretary of ISPRS Working Group III/7.

Purpose: This award was established in 1943 to stimulate the development of the art of aerialphotogrammetry in the United States.

SAIC/Estes Memorial Teaching Award

2004 Recipient: John R. Jensen

John Russell Jensen is a Carolina Distinguished Professor in the Department of Geography at theUniversity of South Carolina. He majored in physical geography and analytical cartography andremote sensing at the following institutions: B.A., California State University at Fullerton, 1971;master’s, Brigham Young University, 1972; Ph.D., UCLA., 1976. While attending UCLA, he workedfull-time for Aero Service Corporation where he was trained in photogrammetry on analyticalstereoplotters and orthophotoscopes. In 1977, he accepted a professorship at the University ofGeorgia. In 1981, Jensen went to the University of South Carolina as an associate professor andhelped to develop a new Ph.D. program in “Geographic Information Science” specializing inremote sensing, cartography, and GIS. The academic program is now one of the most respectedin the nation. Jensen became a USC “Carolina Distinguished Professor” in 1986.

His research has focused on: a) remote sensing of coastal wetland biophysical resources (e.g.,biomass, leaf-area-index); b) development of digital image processing algorithms to extract andmodel change; c) development of error evaluation statistics for assessing the accuracy of multiple-date change detection, d) improvement of the remote sensing and GIS supported environmentalsensitivity index (ESI) mapping used worldwide for protecting coastal resources; and e) modelingwater quality parameters (chlorophyll, dissolved inorganic matter, suspended sediment) usinghigh spatial and spectral resolution remote sensor data. Jensen was President of the AmericanSociety for Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing in 1996. He has published more than 100 refereedjournal articles dealing primarily with remote sensing of the environment. He was a co-author ofASPRS’ Manual of Remote Sensing (1st and 2nd ed.) and Manual of Photographic Interpretation(2nd Ed., 1997). He contributed to People and Pixels (1998) and chaired the writing of Down toEarth: Geographic Information for Sustainable Development (2002) published by the NationalResearch Council, National Academy Press. His textbooks Remote Sensing of the Environment(2000) and Introductory Digital Image Processing (3rd Edition; 2004) are used throughout the world.Jensen has mentored 55 master’s students and 25 Ph.D.’s in remote sensing. All of them areworking in the field.

The SAIC Estes Memorial Teaching Award was inaugurated in 2003 and is named in honor ofProfessor John E. (“Jack”) Estes, teacher, mentor, scientist, and friend of the American Society forPhotogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

Purpose: This award is designed to recognize individual achievement in the promotion of remotesensing and geographic information systems (GIS) technology and applications througheducational efforts. Award recipients are chosen based on documented excellence in education,teaching, mentoring, and training.

Donor: This Award is presented by ASPRS with funding provided by Science ApplicationsInternational Corporation (SAIC) and consists of a presentation plaque and a cash award of$2,000.

Region of the Year Award

The Rocky Mountain Region is the winner for the third year in a row. The competition for theRegion of the Year was once again very tough! The Region was also the Region of Month winnerfor September 2003. Their constant endeavor to outdo themselves not only enhances theirimportance to their members but to the Society as well. The Rocky Mountain Region receivedthis award for outstanding accomplishments in all areas of region activities, some of which includea terrific region newsletter, holding the largest Fall GIS and Remote Sensing Conference in theWestern US, and many other technical meetings, tours, expanding local chapters, awardingscholarships. The Region has also supported The ASPRS Headquarters by setting up the matchingBuilding Fund contributions, and establishing the 2004 National Conference Planning Committee.The Rocky Mountain Region not only competed royally, the presentation of their annual reportwas one of the best ever received at headquarters.

The Columbia River Region has been selected for First Honorable Mention for their superioraccomplishments in region activities, including an excellent newsletter, extensive technicalmeetings such as hosting an International meeting of the ISPRS for “Three Dimensional Mappingfrom InSAR and Lidar,” and other technical meetings. The Region has played the important role ofhosting national-level workshops for the second year in a row, including one on preparing for theProfessional Certification Exams. Columbia River Region was also the “Region of the Month”winner for June and December 2003.

The Central Region has been awarded Second Honorable Mention. The Region deserves thisAward for their achievements, including a vigorous membership campaign and hosting numeroustechnical meetings that have drawn many new student members. With this effort the CentralRegion has exceeded the Student Membership goal by 17%. Among its many activities, TheRegion has provided scholarships, opened an ASPRS Library/reading room, published six informativeand colorful newsletters, and produced an up-to-date website.

Purpose: The Region of the Year Award was established in 1968 to recognize excellence at theregional level in providing service to the members and to the profession at large.

The Rocky Mountain Compiler, first place winner of the Region Newsletter of the Year award, is avery informative, easy to read, colorful, eight-page publication. This publication contains manyimportant concerns of the region as well as for ASPRS National, such as meetings, calendar events,membership, Certification programs, and Scholarships. They do an excellent job of keeping theirmembers abreast of all events.

The Central Region Newsletter is a beautiful and colorful bulletin (published six times in 2003) andcontains important news on student chapters, regional technical presentations, panel discussionson such important topics as Licensing and Certification, and information on the ASPRS Membershipdrive.

Wavelengths, the Columbia River Region newsletter is the third place winner. This informativenewsletter covers National and Regional news and reports on important issues such as the ASPRSworkshop on Preparing for Certification, and provides information on Remote Sensing Update.Spotlighting Student Chapters and new members all add up to a publication that reflects theRegion’s dedication to its members.

Purpose: The Society first bestowed this award in 1980 to recognize excellence of the Region inproviding service to the members and to the profession at large through publication of a newsletter.

ASPRS/IGIF Student Travel Grant

Steven Lennartz and Michele Baum

Steven Lennartz is a graduate student from the University of New Hampshire. His professional goalis to pursue a career in the application of remote sensing and GIS technology to natural resourcemanagement, specifically to issues involving ecosystem management and environmentalmonitoring. He hopes to showcase his research for his Master’s degree and to network with across-section of professionals from private industry, academia, and government.

Michele Baum will be presenting a paper entitled “”Investigating the Use of Static GPS, RTK, andDifferential Leveling for Measuring Orthometric Heights” at this year’s conference. This is the firstconference that she has been able to attend and she’s hoping for feedback to help refine herideas, improve her presentation skills, and help prepare for her thesis defense. As she states, “Forthe past year and a half, I have been focusing mainly on the technology itself. I have not had theopportunity to explore its applications in any depth. Attending the conference would give mean opportunity to see some of the ways that the technology is applied to real-life issues… andcould open doors for my future.“

ASPRS, as a member organization of The International Geographic Information Foundation (IGIF)may select qualified students to attend the ASPRS Annual Conference with financial support fromIGIF. ASPRS/IGIF provides two grants of $500 each to two qualifying students in support of airfareand lodging. The grant also includes a one-year student membership in ASPRS with all associatedprivileges and a complimentary conference registration for the selected students provided theyvolunteer to help at the conference. The grants were first awarded in 2003.

Purpose: the intent of this program is to increase student exposure to the respective professionsidentified with each of the member organizations of IGIF, and to encourage continued studentidentification with and membership in, a national professional organization.Past Award Recipients:

AMELIA MARIE BUDGE

Ms. Amelia (Amy) Budge graduated from the University of New Mexico (UNM) Department ofGeography in 1975 with a BA degree, taking a position as a customer service representative atUNM’s Earth Data Analysis Center (EDAC), Photo Dissemination Program. As manager of theProgram grew it from a modest self-supporting function into an internationally recognized activearchive for Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz, Space Shuttle (STS), and historical aerialphotography. She represented New Mexico in the National Cartographic Information Center(NCIC) and its successor Earth Science Information Center (ESIC). As Manager of EDAC’sClearinghouse Services during the 1980s and 1990s she inaugurated strategic and tacticalimprovements in the scope of activities and range of services that have become standardpractices in several federal, state, and privately operated active archives for imagery and maps.She instituted mechanisms by which the operation recovered the costs of filling user requests.

For 27 years Budge has been involved in many of EDAC’s geospatial projects and is currentlyserving as Deputy Director of EDAC, managing major NASA, DOT, and FGDC projects. She isteam leader for EDAC’s NASA Earth Science Information Partner (ESIP) project and is coordinatingdevelopment of an Internet accessible, data delivery system that is interoperable with otherNASA ESIPs, and that provides information and data from a broad spectrum of satellite sensorsand platforms to local and regional resource managers. She has been an active participant onthe ESIP Federation Interoperability, Outreach, and Metrics Committees. She is also the projectcoordinator for EDAC’s National Consortium for Remote Sensing in Transportation for Security,Safety, Hazards, and Disaster Assessment, funded by U.S. DOT. Mrs. Budge has served as PrincipalInvestigator and project manager on six projects funded by the Federal Geographic DataCommittee (FGDC) to develop metadata for GIS data, establish an Internet clearinghouse node,conduct metadata training workshops, and inaugurate a web mapping service capabilitycompliant with the Open GIS Consortium’s web mapping specifications.

She was appointed by the Secretary of the Department of Interior to serve on an the NationalSatellite Land Remote Sensing Data Archive (NSLRSDA) Committee, which advises the Secretaryon issues related to long-term archiving of Earth-oriented satellite data. Budge is one of thefounding members and past President of the New Mexico Geographic Information Council(NMGIC), she currently serves as Vice-President and a Board member. She also represents theState of New Mexico on the National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC). Ms. Budgeis experienced in organizing and conducting workshops, seminars, and meetings, and hasparticipated in organizing several national and regional conferences.

CLIVE FRASER

Professor Clive Fraser is currently a Professor in the Dept. of Geomatics at The University ofMelbourne. Fraser received his Bachelors in Applied Science (photogrammetry & surveying) fromCurtin University, Perth, and his Masters in Surveying Science, University of South Whales, both inAustralia. He received his PhD in photogrammetry from the University of Washington in the US.Clive’s particular areas of interest are in digital photogrammetric mapping, industrialphotogrammetric measurement systems and the exploitation of high-resolution satellite imageryfor geospatial information generation. On the industry side, he is involved with the developmentof innovative image-based spatial IT products and he served in a part-time capacity from 1998 –2001 as Technical Director of Geomatic Technologies Pty Ltd, a spatial information companybased in Melbourne. Prior to his current appointments, Fraser served as Reader and Head of theDepartment of Geomatics from 1993 to mid 1998, and prior to joining the University of Melbournehe was for 10 years Vice President of Geodetic Services, Inc. in Florida, the World’s leading companyin industrial photogrammetric systems and services.

Fraser is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering andin recognition of his academic and professional work he has earned numerous international awardsincluding the President’s Medal and the President’s Prize from the Photogrammetric Society ofthe UK. He is a Fellow of both The Photogrammetric Society and the Institution of Engineers Australia.Clive has a number of active international research and industry collaborations, and he serves asa consultant to industry in Australia, Japan, the US and Europe. He also serves on the EditorialBoards of four of the leading international journals dealing with photogrammetry and remotesensing and he has authored more than 200 publications.

Fraser was first Certified as a Photogrammetrist in 1986. He joined ASPRS as a PhD student inSeattle in 1977. In the same year he was awarded The Wild Heerbrugg Award by the Society, andin the following year he won the Bausch and Lomb Photogrammetric Award. This started a longand productive association with ASPRS. His contributions to the Society being most significantlyrelated to its publications and research support activities. Most notably, he served as the AssociateEditor of Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing (PE&RS) from 1987 to 1992, he authoredone of the chapters in the ASPRS Manual of Non-Topographic Photogrammetry in 1989, and he iscurrently involved in writing two of the chapters for the forthcoming edition of ASPRS’ Manual ofPhotogrammetry. Moreover, he has been an active reviewer for both PE&RS and selected ASPRSpublications for more than 20 years. He has also served on selection committees for differentASPRS awards & has been active in technical program selection for ASPRS Technical Meetings,especially in regard to close-range photogrammetry. He has also received the FairchildPhotogrammetric Award, the Talbert Abrams Award (Grand Prize twice and Honorary Mentiononce), the Davidson President’s Award for Practical Papers (three times: first, second and thirdplace.) Since his first publication in PE&RS in 1980, Fraser has published a total of 20 scientific

papers in the journal and continues to contribute papers every year. In addition to thesepublications, he has presented papers at 16 ASPRS Annual and Fall Meetings since his firstattendance at such a meeting in 1978. He has rarely missed an Annual Meeting since.

PAUL F. HOPKINS (1955-2003)

Dr. Paul F. Hopkins was a tenured professor at the School of Environmental Resources andForest Engineering at the State University of New York College of Environmental Scienceand Forestry (SUNY ESF) and Director of ESF’s Council for Geospatial Modeling and Analysis.Dr. Hopkins received his BS in Forestry from the University of Maine with Distinction in 1977,his MS in Environmental and Resource Engineering in photogrammetry and remote sensingin 1980, and his PhD in 1992 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in digitalphotogrammetry and remote sensing.

Hopkins had a passion for teaching and he derived great pleasure in communicatingthe benefits of the mapping sciences to anyone who would listen. He was willing to teacheverything from elementary surveying and map interpretation to advanced remote sensingand GIS. His research and consulting focused on the application of airborne and satelliteimagery to forest management issues with a keen interest in geometric and radiometricintegrity of remotely sensed data. He sought and received support for multiple sourcesincluding the U.S. Forest Service, National Science Foundation, NASA, NOAA, and manystate and county agencies. He had close to 50 publications and presentations to hiscredit.

Hopkins was a hard working and energetic member and participant both nationallyand locally in ASPRS since 1977 and was a Certified Photogrammetrist. His service includedbut was not limited to Chairmanship of the ASPRS Strategic Planning and MembershipCommittees and as a core and charter member of the Electronic CommunicationsCommittee. He was the National Director of the Central New York (CNY) Region, from1987-93 and served on the Executive Committee from 1989-93. Hopkins was Vice President,and twice President of the CNY Region as well as a long time member of the RegionCouncil. He regularly and actively participated in the ASPRS annual and regional meetingsand helped establish and direct the New York State GIS Conference Co-sponsored byASPRS and The CNY Region. He was instrumental in establishing the William JohnsonMemorial Fund after Bill’s untimely passing. Hopkins received the ASPRS Meritorious ServiceAward in 1990 & 93, the Ford Bartlett Award in 1992, was the first recipient of the AltenhofenMemorial Scholarship, and was the winner of the First Place Student Award from the WesternGreat Lakes Region.

Hopkins was also a member of the ACSM, the Society of American Foresters, and theAmerican Society for Engineering Education. He was a 20year member of the PlymouthCongregational Church, UCC and a dedicated Boy Scout Leader. He was a Merit BadgeCounselor for the Hiawatha Council for skiing, orienteering, surveying, forestry, andenvironmental sciences. At various times of the year one could hear about the manyScout outings that Hopkins and his sons experienced. An avid hiker and backpacker,Hopkins was a sports fan. He and his wife, Chris would pack all of their baby equipment,including coolers, to go and watch a Syracuse Chiefs game with babies in tow.

Those who new Hopkins and worked with him understood that he would take his familyski outings in the local hills each winter week. His e-mail signature “Live to Ski; Ski to Live”

was about Hopkins’ whole philosophy on life — family, work, community. He lived to thefullest intertwining all his time, talents, and devotions. Hopkins is no longer with us, but let’shope that our profession never forgets everything he stood for.

ELIAS JOHNSON

Dr. Elias Johnson is completing a distinguished career of contributions to remote sensing andphotogrammetry education, and is teaching his final semester as Professor of Geography,Department of Geography, Geology, and Planning at the Southwest Missouri State University(SMSU.) He received his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Oklahoma in 1977 after earningBachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Northern Illinois University. In addition to serving on thefaculty at SMSU, he served as an Assistant Professor at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota.

Johnson has taught photogrammetry, remote sensing, aerial photography interpretation,cartography, and thematic mapping courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levelssince 1977 at SMSU. He received numerous honoraria, research grants, and sabbatical leaves allrelated to his continued interest in the varied disciplines of geography and cartography. Johnson’sresearch interests included land cover analysis using image processing and GIS, as well asadvanced photogrammetric and remote sensing procedures for regional mapping. He has steadilypublished throughout his career including SMSU “in-house” as well as domestic and internationalpublications. He participated in the ASPRS 2001 Gateway to the New Millennium Conference. Heremains active in research as evidenced by his co-authored publication in the Journal of AridEnvironments (accepted 2 April 2003). He has also co-authored a presentation at the AmericanGeophysical Union Convention (December, 2003) and co-authored a chapter, Climate of NorthAmerica, in the Encyclopedia of Climatology since his retirement. Elias was a primary developerof SMSU’s Institute of Resource Planning and Management and served as a consultant to the Cityof Springfield on aerial photography interpretation issues.

Professor Johnson played a principal role in developing and modernizing the Cartographyand Map Technology program at SMSU. He worked closely with U. S. Geological Survey andNational Imagery and Mapping Agency personnel to design and modify the curriculum. Hedeveloped a cartography minor for the university in 1984. He works continuously with companiesand individuals in the GIS industry to ensure his students are involved with state-of-the-arttechniques, processes, materials, and equipment.

For more than 30 years, Johnson provided support and assistance to ASPRS and the State ofMissouri in advancing applications of the mapping sciences. He has demonstrated continuedlong-time service to ASPRS, and has won ASPRS’ Ford Bartlett Membership Award five times. Heserved on the society’s Student Activities Committee for three consecutive years. Professor Johnsonwas also instrumental in establishing the SMSU Student Chapter, Central Region of ASPRS in 1986and served as faculty advisor for a dozen years. He served as the faculty sponsor of the campusEnvironmental Education Committee and Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU — an international honorsociety in geography) for three years each – both of which use advanced geospatial informationtechnology. In 1989, the Rolla Region (now the Central Region) honored Johnson with theOutstanding Member Award. In addition to ASPRS, Johnson is a member of GTU, Association ofAmerican Geographers, The Remote Sensing Society, Missouri Academy of Science, and theMissouri Geographic Society.

Purpose: Started in 1992, the designation of Fellow is conferred on Society members who havebeen active for a total of at least ten years and who have performed exceptional service inadvancing the science and use of the mapping sciences and related disciplines. It is awardedfor professional excellence and for service to the Society.

William A. Fischer Memorial Scholarship

2004 Recipient: Carl J. Legleiter

Carl J. Legleiter, currently a Ph.D. student with the Department of Geography at the University ofCalifornia Santa Barbara, has been selected to receive the 2004 William A. Fischer MemorialScholarship. Legleiter is being presented this award in recognition of his outstanding academiccredentials and his very impressive record of research, publications, and service in applied remotesensing. Legleiter’s research will apply high spectral and spatial resolution data, geostatisticalanalysis, and hydrologic modeling to examine channel dynamics and riverine ecology. The resultsof his work utilizing these new approaches should make an important contribution to our ability toapply remote sensing to the characterization, monitoring, and preservation of river systems. TheAward Review committee wishes Mr. Legleiter much success and is confident that his current andfuture research efforts will continue to make important contributions to the remote sensingcommunity.

Michel Morgan is a doctoral candidate at the University of Calgary, Department of GeomaticsEngineering, with a concentration on photogrammetry. He has an extremely strong backgroundin theoretical and mathematical photogrammetry. He also has an exceptional list of refereedpublications and was the lead author in seven proceedings papers. He provided an excellentproposal for continuing studies, and has excellent faculty references including his faculty advisor,Associate Professor Dr. Ayman Habib.

Purpose: First given in 1986, the Robert E. Altenhofen Memorial Scholarship is intended toencourage and commend college students who display exceptional interest and ability in thetheoretical aspects of photogrammetry.

Ta Liang Memorial Award

2004 Recipient: Ryan L. Perroy

Ryan L. Perroy’s selection was based on his academic achievements, planned program ofresearch-related travel, and extracurricular activities. Perroy received a B.S. in Physics from TheCollege of William and Mary, and is presently enrolled in an M.S./PhD. program in Remote Sensing/Soil Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has maintained consistently excellentgrades throughout his academic career. In addition, he has been involved in a variety of significantextracurricular service activities. Perroy’s research involves the use of remote sensing to developa methodology for identifying areas in rural Albania that are seriously affected by erosion basedon soil reflectance characteristics and vegetation. He has identified a research problem that isboth tractable and of obvious value to the country. The award will be used to defray the expenseof travel to Albania for fieldwork related to his thesis.

Purpose: The Ta Liang Memorial Award was established in 1989 to facilitate research-related travelby outstanding graduate students in remote sensing. Such travel includes field investigations,agency visits, participation in conferences, or any travel that enhances or facilitates a graduateresearch program

Ji Sang Park has been selected to receive the 2004 Paul R. Wolf Memorial Scholarship. Park is currently a Ph.D. student with the Department of Civil and EnvironmentalEngineering, Geo-spatial Information Engineering Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.He has demonstrated and has been recognized, at all levels, for his continued interest, dedication,enthusiasm, and aptitude to become an education professional. Space Imaging Award for the Application of High Resolution DigitalSatellite Imagery

2004 Recipients: Jason Janke and Qian Yu

Jason Janke is a Ph.D. student in Geography (GIS and geomorphology) at the University of Coloradoat Boulder. His area of interest is the integration of geospatial data, remote sensing and GIS forapplications in geomorphology. His project title is “An Analysis of Rock Glacier Flow using TemporalDigital Orthophotos and IKONOS Imagery.”

The objective of Janke’s study is to establish procedures for detecting Rocky Mountain glaciermovement using a unique combination of GIS and photogrammetry and high-resolution IKONOSsatellite imagery. The study will provide automated procedures for glacier motion detection, assessthe uncertainty of motion measurements, provide a better understanding of long-term horizontal/vertical glacier movement on a regional scale and uncover potential evidence of climate change.This proposal was very well-written, included well-developed methods and is adequatelydocumented with references. Mr. Janke is an excellent student and already has several publicationsin the field of rock glacier movement.

Qian Yu is a Ph.D. student in remote sensing at the University of California at Berkeley. Her area ofinterest is remote sensing applications in ecosystem studies. Her project title is “Comparison ofIKONOS and EO-1 Hyperion Data for Estimating Leaf Area Index and Forest Crown Closure.”

Yu will compare the use of Hyperion hyperspectral and IKONOS imagery for estimating leaf areaindex (LAI) and crown closure (CC), both critical structural parameters of forests that are used toquantify energy and mass exchange characteristics of terrestrial ecosystems (e.g., photosynthesis,respiration, transpiration and carbon/nutrient cycles). Field work has been conducted to collect LAIand CC measurements for a forest in the Sierra Nevada mountain range and field measurements willbe compared to estimates derived from hyperspectral and high-resolution image data. Results areexpected to improve LAI and CC estimations from remotely sensed data and assess the spatial andspectral advantage of combining hyperspectral Hyperion data with multispectral IKONOS images formeasuring LAI and CC. The proposal has strong support from Ms. Yu’s institution and major professor,includes a well-developed methodology and is well written.

Purpose: This award was originally sponsored by EOSAT and known as The EOSAT Award forApplication of Digital Landsat TM Data designed to support remote sensing education and stimulatethe development of applications of digital Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data through thegranting of digital Landsat data for applied research by undergraduate or graduate students. TheAward was established in 1991. In 2001 it became known as the Space Imaging Award for theApplication of High Resolution Digital Satellite Imagery

The Leica GeoSystems Internship

2004 Recipient: Cameron Ellum

Cameron Ellum, a PhD candidate in the University of Calgary’s Department of GeomaticsEngineering, has been selected as the recipient of the 2004 Leica Geosystems Internship, aneight-week intensive program open to graduate students in photogrammetry and remote sensing,designed to augment the participants’ existing research. Ellum will have the opportunity to workin a commercial environment on a project which will utilize his research in integrating GPS andphotogrammetric measurements. Leica Geosystems is looking forward to his internship and toexposing their engineers to some of his fresh ideas.

Purpose: Leica GeoSystems Internship (formerly The LH Systems Award) is an eight-week internshipfor graduate students in photogrammetry. The selected intern works with Leica GeoSystemspersonnel at a selected Leica GeoSystems facility. The internship consists of a stipend of $2500plus an allowance for travel and living expenses for the period of the internship.

Donor: This internship is presented by ASPRS, with funding provided by Leica GeoSystems Theinternship provides the award winner with an opportunity to carry out a small research project ofhis/her own choice, or to work on an existing Leica GeoSystems project as part of a team.

Z/I Imaging Scholarship

2004 Recipient: Kristin Eickhorst

Kristin Eickhorst, currently a Ph.D. student in Spatial Information Science and Engineering at theUniversity of Maine, working under the guidance of Prof. Peggy Agouris, has been selected toreceive the 2004 Z/I Imaging Scholarship. Her research is focused on developing novel automatedmethods for image-based spatio-temporal information representation. She is currently workingon a project funded by the National Science Foundation and is also collaborating with NASAscientists to apply her Ph.D. work to forecasting the movement of invasive plant species. Thiscollaboration draws on Eickhorst’s undergraduate background in environmental science andbiology. In addition to being a good researcher, Eickhorst has been an excellent student,maintaining perfect grades and an active presence in departmental activities, teaching labsections of senior- and graduate-level image processing and remote sensing classes, andconducting workshops for visiting high school students. Eickhorst has also been involved in outreachto the larger com-munity through her work as coordinator of volunteers for ACSM and ASPRSnational conferences. The committee wishes Ms. Eickhorst further success in her career inadvancing spatial information sciences.

Purpose: The Z/I Imaging Scholarship, first offered in 2003, grew out of the Intergraph Award forBest Scientific Paper in Spatial Data Standards which was established in 1993. The purpose ofthe Z/I Award is to facilitate graduate-level studies and career goals adjudged to addressnew and innovative uses of signal processing, image processing techniques, and theapplication of photogrammetry to real-world techniques within the earth imaging industry.

The Department of Geography of the Federal University of Technology, Minna offers anundergraduate program in applied geography with options in Remote Sensing Applications andApplied Meteorology. Masters degrees are also offered in remote Sensing Applications, AppliedMeteorology and Environmental Management. Lectures and laboratory exercises are conductedin the Digital Processing and Geographic Information Systems (DIP/GIS) laboratory and theGeography laboratory. These laboratories house tutorial materials on remote sensing, geographicinformation systems and meteorology. There are plans to keep expanding and improving on theavailable facilities for the benefit of the academic community.

The University Library Services Department was established in 1984 for teaching and researchwork for the University and the immediate community. The Department of Geography has set upa Departmental Library where the ASPRS, ESRI, and Wiley publications and PE&RS will be cataloguedand available to the students and staff.

Purpose: The Kodak International Educational Literature Award was first bestowed in 1990. Itsgoal is to improve the quantity and quality of literature in the recipients’ libraries that deals withthe mapping sciences (i.e. photogrammetry, remote sensing, GIS, and related disciplines) byproviding ASPRS educational materials and publications.

The Kodak International Educational Literature Award includes $350 worth of books, manuals, orother literature published by ASPRS; a five-year subscription to PE&RS, proceedings of the AnnualConference and Fall technical meetings for five years; one free registration to the Society’s AnnualConference at the time of receiving the award for a member of the institution to whom theaward is being given; and a hand-engrossed certificate.

Since 2001, the award has been augmented by a generous grant from the Environmental SystemsResearch Institute (ESRI) of the complete ESRI Press Library collection and, starting in 2003, selectedtitles from the John Wiley and Sons, Publishers, catalog.

George E. Brown, Jr. Congressional Honor Award

Purpose: ASPRS created the award in honor of the late Congressman George E. Brown, Jr. and thecontributions he made to advance the benefits of imagery and geospatial information to Society.Representative Brown was very supportive of the geospatial industry. He authored key legislationaffecting the industry, supported geospatial information research, and promoted the develop-ment of the commercial remote sensing industry for the greater good of Society.

This award is presented periodically to recognize members of the U.S. Congress whose leadershipand personal efforts have advanced the science, engineering, application, education, andcommerce of imaging and geospatial information. In addition to a plaque, the award consists ofan opportunity for ASPRS to sponsor a geospatial sciences presentation to an elementary school,secondary school, or university of the recipient’s choice in his or her District or State.

Purpose: Established in 1960 as the Wild-Heerbrugg Award, it became the Leica Inc. Fellowship in1991 and was awarded through 1997. The Leica, Inc. Presidential Citations for Meritorious Service

Purpose: Presidential Citations for Meritorious Service were presented by the President of theAmerican Society for Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing beginning in 1965 to members in specialrecognition of meritorious and outstanding administrative contributions (in contrast to scientificachievement) during his presidential year.” This recognition ended in 1991 and was replaced byCertificates of Appreciation for Meritorious Service. Each recipient of a Presidential Citation forMeritorious Service has voluntarily contributed his or her time and talents for the benefit of theSociety during the past year. The Presidential Citation Certificate is a symbol of the Society’sgratitude.
