2003 PREVIEW2003 PREVIEW

In 2001, William Paterson won its first NCAA regional championship andmade its first appearance in the NCAA Division III Softball Championships. For an encore, the Pioneers finished atop the New Jersey Athletic Confer-ence for the first time. With 10 players returning this spring, including All-Americans Morgan Dunlap and Sam Kszepka, they are looking tocontinue the championship precedent set the previous two seasons.

Ninth-year head coach Hallie Cohen, who is seven victories from reachingthe 400-win plateau, also has plenty of talent to work with among hernewcomers. If the veterans and fresh faces can blend together, the Pioneerscould again rank high among the elite in Division III softball.

Here is a position-by-position look at this season’s squad:

PITCHERS

Senior co-captain Diane Catalano (14-6, 1.00 ERA, 103 K in 118.2 IP)emerged as a go-to pitcher last season, tossing 40 consecutive scorelessinnings during a school-record 14-game winning streak. That victoryrun armed her with the self-confidence necessary to succeedin big spots. She forms aformidable tandem with Kszepka(13-4, 0.86 ERA), a third-teamNational Fastpitch CoachesAssociation/USA Today DivisionIII All-American and the EasternCollegiate Athletic Associationand New Jersey AthleticConference Player of the Year.Kszepka is also a big offensivethreat, as she led the team inbatting average (.463), home runs(3) and runs batted in (30).

A talented group of newcomers could make the staff even stronger. JuniorKatie Lord transferred from Division II Lock Haven, while freshmen JennScott and Alexis Sous are also strong candidates to log innings throughoutthe season.

CATCHERS

For three years, Dunlap (.382, 33R, 10 2B, HR, 23 RBI) has beensynonymous with the success ofWilliam Paterson softball. Thetwo-time second-team NFCA All-American combines intelligence, leadership, a strong arm and apotent bat to give the Pioneers oneof the most complete players inDivision III. She is known mainlyfor her offense, but opponentsrarely try to steal a base againstthe senior because of her ability topick off runners.

Providing depth behind the platewill be sophomore Nikki Arias

Diane Catalano

Morgan Dunlap

(.222). Although she is the starting third baseman, Arias will also see someinnings at catcher to rest Dunlap, especially if one of the newcomers provescapable of handling the hot corner in her absence. Freshmen Mindy Coxe, the 2002 NJAC Rookie of the Year in field hockey, and Jen Fenton are alsooptions behind Dunlap.

INFIELD

Up the middle, the Pioneers possess the same double-play tandem theyhave had the previous three seasons in seniors Pam Migliaccio (.341, 19 R)and Katie Morris (.282). Migliaccio, a second baseman and co-captain, is aspeedy slap-hitter and a capable base-stealer. Meanwhile Morris, an All-New Jersey Athletic Conference shortstop, has steadily improved heroffensive game over the past three seasons.

Arias is expected to hold down thehot corner after learning on the job asa freshman. On the other corner ofthe infield, junior Erin McNeill (.267), Coxe and Fenton will vie to start atfirst base. Coxe can also play thirdbase, while pitcher Lord could alsohelp out in the infield. FreshmenJessie Mull and Maria Brownprovide depth.

OUTFIELD

Senior Liz Carroll (.293, 9 2B, 6 3B, 20RBI) is the lone outfield starterreturning. Carroll, who will start incenter field, led the team with 15extra-base hits in 2002 and alsoplayed strong defense. The questionis who will surround her. Among thereturnees, sophomores Kelly Harchetts (.217) and Meghan Wagner (.207)are candidates for starting assignments. Harchetts is a hard-worker with asolid all-around game, while Wagner’s asset is the speed she showed as apinch-runner and defensive replacement last spring.

There are two freshmen who will compete for starting assignments areDanielle Patlen and Lindsey Santana. Outfield depth could be bolstered

by Arias and Coxe.

SCHEDULE

Once again, the Pioneers will challengethemselves by facing some of the finestprograms in Division III during theirtrip to Ocoee, FL, for the Rebel SpringGames. Among the teams they will faceare national powers Coe and IllinoisWesleyan. Upon their return home, they face tough New Jersey AthleticConference doubleheaders againstMontclair State, Ramapo, Rowan,Rutgers-Camden and The College ofNew Jersey, as well as challengingtwinbills against non-conferenceprograms such as FDU Florham,Moravian and Wilkes.

HALLIECOHEN

Head Coach

There are twowords thatseemingly bestdescribe HallieCohen: work ethic.Whether it isrunning a practice, putting together agame plan ortackling recruiting, she does so with aseemingly endlessreservoir ofenergy. So muchgusto, in fact, thatit is contagious.

For this reason, there is one wordthat sums up thePioneers’ ninth-year coach betterthan any other:success. Enteringthe 2003 season, she needs sevenwins to hit the400-victory mark. Already, she ranks in the Top 10 among activeDivision III coaches in victories, but her impact at William Patersontranscends numbers.

When she arrived in January, 1995, she envisioned a victorious future. Her first three seasons did not yield much success, so she worked evenharder at turning the Pioneers into a gem on the softball diamond. Sherolled up her sleeves and convinced more recruits and their parents tobelieve in her vision of a first-class program that would excel in theclassroom while also competing for championships.

Since 1998, William Paterson has been one of the elite squads not onlyin the New Jersey Athletic Conference, but also nationwide. It startedwith a 25-15 season in 1998, one highlighted by the program’s firstNCAA Division III postseason invitation in four years. The Pioneersbuilt upon that season in 1999 when they went 30-16, won their first-ever NJAC championship and made a return trip to the NCAA’s.

Over the last three seasons, Cohen has helped the Pioneers continuetheir ascension into national prominence. After going 26-10 in 2000,they won a school-record 39 games and reached the NCAA Division III

Coach Cohen offers words of wisdom tothird baseman Nikki Arias

7

Softball National Championship in 2001. They did so by mirroringtheir coach’s dedication and diligence, overcoming an early setback inthe East Region Tournament by winning five games in less than 48hours to secure the regional championship.

For an encore, the Pioneers were ranked as high as No. 6 in theNational Fastpitch Coaches Association/USA Today Division III poll, finished 29-10 a year ago and finished atop the NJAC during theregular season for the first time in school history. This included aschool-record 14-game winning streak that featured a program-best 54consecutive innings without allowing a run.

For all of Cohen’s accomplishments on the field, her greatest credit isrecruiting a high quality of student-athlete. In the Fall, 2002, semester,13 of this year’s players earned a grade point average of 3.0 or betterand five made the Dean’s List.

Even more impressive is that Cohen also coaches the Pioneers’ fieldhockey team and is one victory away from reaching the 200-winmilestone. Not to mention that she had 14 players who carried a GPAabove 3.0 in the fall.

Prior to her arrival at William Paterson, Cohen coached softball andfield hockey at FDU Florham (then FDU Madison). She went 194-145-1in softball during her tenure in Madison.

A graduate of Wayne Valley High School and a member of its Hall ofFame, Cohen was a scholarship athlete for both softball and fieldhockey at Rutgers University, enjoying standout careers in each beforeearning her B.S. in health and physical education in 1980. She residesin Succasunna.
