84 – CCR – Basics

• CCR Program consists of two parts:– Defining your Channel and Reaches– Generating a Channel Condition Report, based on new survey data.

• Defining your channel requires either:– DXF File– Microstation DGN File

84 – Case Study – Getting Started

1. Open the ‘Sample Channel Condition 84’ project.

2. Start CCR from the ‘Utilities – Other – Channel Condition Reporter’ menu item.

3. It’s time to define our channel. The steps are:a. Load your DXF or DGN file and define the layers with the channel lines.

b. Identify the type of channel and the various polylines used to define it.

c. Specify the number of ‘reaches’.

d. Define the Channel depth and name.

e. Adjust individual reaches.• Change the channel depth in the reach.• Add boundaries to eliminate depths on the edges from becoming the controlling depths.

84 – DGN File with Channel Elements

84 – Selecting DGN Layers for Display

• You can control which layers are displayed from the DGN file.

1. Click ‘Layers’ from the lower menu bar.

2. Click ‘None’ to turn off all layers.

3. Click Layer 58 on and then click ‘Apply’. This is the layer where they placed our polylines.

4. Click OK.

84 – Selecting the Channel Type

• Click the ‘L=?‘ button (left menu) to assign each polyline to a channel line type.

• First, specify the channel type.– Single Channel: One lane.

– Quarter Half Quarter Channel: Three lanes. Two outside lanes that extend along the outside of the channel (¼ channel width) and a wider lane in the center (½ channel width).

– Four Quarter Channel: Four lanes. Each lane is ¼ channel width.

84 – Assigning the Polylines

1. For each channel line:a. Click on the line type associated with the polyline. For

example, Outside Left.

b. Now click on the polyline associated with that line.

2. When finished, click ‘Create Channel’.

84 - Reaches

• The channel is divided into sub-areas called ‘Reaches’.

• Click the ‘Reaches’ menu item.

• You can create reaches by:– Entering the number

of reaches.

– Specifying a distance between reaches.

For our example, use ‘Number of Reaches’ and enter ’12’. Click the ‘Create’ button.

Reaches R-1 through R-12 are created and placed on the screen.

84 - Reach Adjustment

• Each reach has a ‘handle’ where it intersects the centerline.

• You can select the reach tool (Arrow icon) and drag reaches along the centerline.

In this example, the first reach is ‘buggered’. Grab its handle and drag it a few feet up the channel until it straightens itself out.

84 - Setting the Channel Info

• Click the ‘Channel’ menu item to enter the channel information.1. Give your channel a

name. (Two fields)

2. Enter the Survey Date.

3. Specify the default channel depth. For our case, use 34.0.

4. Click ‘OK’.Note: If the Project Depth changes as you proceed up the channel, you will have to open the properties of each reach and enter the Project Depth for that reach.

84 - Getting to the Reach Properties

• You can click on the ‘Book’ icon (right bottom) to open up the file list shown on the left.

• For each reach, you can right click on the Reach name and select ‘Properties’ to change the properties of the reach.

84 – Reach Properties – Part 1

• Reach ID: Allows you to change the name of the reach.

• Reach Depth: Click ‘Override’ and you can set a Project Depth for this reach that is different from the normal project depth.

• Reach Width and Length: Just displayed for info.

• Orientation: This decides how the reach line is constructed.– Minimum Distance– Perpendicular to Centerline– Set Angle

84 - Reach Properties – Part 2

• OLT Distance (Outside Left): – This defines an area, inward from the

outside left polyline, where depths less than the Reach Depth will be reported as shoals but will not be reported as a controlling depth.

– It allows flexibility so that a minimum depth along the very outside edge of a channel does not become a controlling depth, but is still reported as a shoal.

• ORT Distance: (Same for the right.)• Description: (User supplied).

For R-7, enter ’50’ for the OLT Distance and ‘100’ for the ORT Distance.

84 - OLT and ORT Distances

• You can now see the ‘hatched’ areas.– 50’ inward from the

outside left polyline (bottom).

– 100’ inward from the outside right polyline (top).

• Depths falling in these areas cannot become ‘controlling depths’ but are still reported in footnotes as shoals.

84 - Saving the Channel Configuration

• Once you have adjusted any necessary reach properties, you have finished creating the channel.

• You only have to create the channel one time.• You can now save the channel configuration to a file. (Click

‘File – Save Project Settings’ and save it with an RPT extension.)

• In the future, you can:1. Start CCR.

2. Open the Channel Configuration (RPT) file.

3. Enter your survey data.

4. Determine the shoals.

84 – Entering your Survey Data

• After you have created your channel (or read an existing RPT file) it’s time to enter your XYZ data.

• CCR can read:– ASCII XYZ Files

– Microstation DGN Files

• If you use a DGN file, you can select the layer that contains the sounding data.

We’re going to read 3 DGN files for our data. The soundings are on Layer 49.

1. Click ‘XYZ – Sounding Display’.

2. For Dgn Level to Extract Soundings, enter ’49’. Then click ‘OK’.

3. Now click XYZ – Load Soundings and give it the name of the files with your soundings. You can specify multiple files.

• Initially, all of your soundings will be displayed on the screen.

4. Click ‘XYZ – Sounding Display’

5. Let’s hide all soundings deeper than 34’ (Project Depth)

6. Click ‘Apply’.

The results are shown to the right.

84 - Searching for Controlling Depths and Shoals

7. Hit the ‘Shoals’ menu item.

• On the screen display you’ll see different colored depths.– RED = Controlling

Depth

– YELLOW = Shoal (Deeper than CD but shoaler than Project Depth.)

– BLUE = Would have been a CD but it lies in an OLT or ORT zone.

84 – Review of Controlling Depths and Shoals

9. Click ‘Review’.• You can select the Reach and

Segment and look at:– Channel Depth (Project)

– Controlling Depth of Segment

– Any Shoal Depths in Segment

• You can also output an ASCII XYZ file containing the Shoal Depths and/or Controlling Depths from this window.

84 – NOAA Report

• Click ‘Report – Screen’ to view a summary report in the NOAA format.– Click on the last

reach in the bottom of the list to scroll the list downward.

• Click ‘Report – Text File’ to generate a TXT file copy of the report for import into other applications.
