Manasquan River, Point Pleasant Canal and Barnegat Bay. The luncheon includes an “all-you-can-eat buffet including Italian sausage and peppers and Swedish meatballs, as well as a “create-your-own” salad/sandwich with ham, turkey, roast beef, cheese, vegetables, a variety of breads and rolls, coffee, tea, soda, and juice. MAYOR’S Museum members, Marge and Paul Edelson are shown below in April receiving the Mayor’sLIFETIME Lifetime Achievement Award. They were honored for their many volunteer contributions to ACHIEVEMENT our township over the years. Marge is a founder of our museum, a trustee, Chairperson of theAWARD Quilt and Crafts Committee, and Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee. She also takes

all our 3rd grade classes on historic tours of our township and teaches some of the classes when they visit the museum. Paul is our Memorial Bricks Chairman and has been recording oral history from some of our elderly residents. This is a program designed to preserve the past for the future.

ANTIQUE/ On May 6, Wayne and Ginny Stevenson presented their interesting program “Antique/Unique” UNIQUE to the museum featuring many one-of-a-kind items. Members and friends who attended PROGRAM thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Many attendees brought items of their own for the

Stevensons to identify and evaluate.

RAFFLE A beautiful queen size quilt, “Birds in the Air” is being completed by our faithful quilterSALES members to be raffled at our December exhibit. The colors, which include shades of blue,

lavender, and white are combined to make this particular quilt one of their most appealing productions to date. Raffle ticket books will be mailed out shortly to our members. Please do your best to sell or purchase one or more books. We have 3500 tickets to sell and need everyone’s help. Please keep in mind that this is our major fundraiser of the year. In the past, many of our members have sold 4, 5, 6, and even 10 books. We will again be selling raffle tickets at some of the local supermarkets and also at Boskovs as we did last year. We need help on the following Friday and Saturdays: Sept 12 & 13, Sept 19 & 20, Sept 26 & 27, Oct 3 & 4, and Oct 24 & 25. A sign up sheet requesting your help will be available at our meeting. ARCHIVES Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003 9am to 3pm. Monmouth Co. Library, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan, AND NJ. Archives Day is a fun and informative event. It is a free public event to encourage HISTORY awareness of our documentary heritage and New Jersey’s history. Mark your calendars andDAY plan to attend. Our museum will have a booth at this event displaying our lovely quilt, other

sale items and some historic artifacts. We will also sell raffle tickets. Historic organizations and societies from the county and state participate plus variousworkshops are offered. In the morning there will be a welcome and awards presentationfollowed by a Keynote address by Governor William Livingston (portrayed by ChristineJohnson). Each year a different historical personage is portrayed at this event. Your Museumhas been participating in this event for several years. WOOLLEY The archeologists have been working at the Woolley House completing state requirementsHOUSE before the house is readied for the move. UPDATE The township is in the process of working with an architect to design a new foundation.

Some of the cost of the foundation will be covered with the $100,000 legislative grant that the township and museum received.

EXHIBIT “Before the Malls: Shopping in Asbury Park” is the title of our December exhibit which is 2003 scheduled at the old Oakhurst School on December 6, 7, and 8. The exhibit tells the story of

Asbury Park as Monmouth County’s shopping mecca—from the opening of Steinbachs in 1876 to the dawn of the mega-mall in the 1960s.We are looking for photographs, postcards, vintage clothing, early credit cards, bills, receipts and memorabilia from such storied retailers as Dainty Apparel, Tepper Bros., The College Shop, and more.We are searching for “experts”—those who remember shopping, working, and enjoying Asbury’s golden age of retail. MUSEUM’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY by Marge Edelson

Did You Know…..

…that in October 2003, the Township of Ocean Historical Museum will celebrate its 20th

anniversary?

…that in those 20 years the Museum has been open to the public every Tuesday except the holidays when schools were closed, totaling approximately 1000 days?

…that in the past 20 years the Museum volunteers have presented programs to over 6000 Township school children?

…that in the past 20 years approximately 8000 adults have visited the Museum?

…that in the past 20 years additional hours too numerous to calculate have been devoted to planning and preparing exhibits, research, committee meetings, quilting and fundraising; bringing this Museum to the status it enjoys as a recognized community institution?

While the first 20 years of the Historical Museum have been devoted to reaching out to friends and neighbors to establish a presence….

In The Next 20 Years……

…the Museum prepares to move into the Woolley Homestead, a local “architectural gem” that will make the Township’s legacy “come alive” and will offer visitors a chance to step back into the history that created the Township in which we live.

…there will be a continuation and expansion of programs that interpret our past and our efforts to preserve the stories and events that have molded our community.

…the life-blood of the Museum will be greater participation and support enabling its successful stewardship of local history.
