CADA Initiative

industry scholar
cooperation
• Goal: Encouraging the
industrial/academic collaboration in adding commercial value to digital archives.
• Budget: $58,000,000NTD ($1,657,000 USD), expect to support 10 projects
2002/12/117 APEC Workshop on e-learning and Digital Libraries
28
CADA Initiative
• What we expect from the projects– Focus on the value-adding process, including:
• The creative process• New technology in applying DA• New business model, new transaction mechanism)• Evaluation of commercial value
– Emphasize on the process, not end product (although won’t mind if some hot items come out of it).
2002/12/117 APEC Workshop on e-learning and Digital Libraries
29
CADA Initiative
• Each project must involve
– Academia/industry/content provider
– Academia/industry
– Content provider/industry
2002/12/117 APEC Workshop on e-learning and Digital Libraries
30
CADA Initiative
• Who gets what (IPR of outcome) – The rights belongs to the executive units.– NDAP reserves the right of usage during the
executive period of NDAP
2002/12/117 APEC Workshop on e-learning and Digital Libraries
31
CADA Initiative
• We held three public meetings announcing CADA– Taipei:10/25, around 250 participants– Taichung:11/6, around 120 participants– Kaohsiung : 11/8, around 100 participants
• Presentation and demo– Presentation: 9 main content providers– Demo: 9 main content providers plus compani
es with technology

Conclusion
• Digital archives of cultural heritage should have commercial value. (Education is one obvious market, but there should be more.)
• Government can (should) provide funding to encourage industry/academia/content provider collaboration to expedite the process
• Two critical issues: business model and IPR
