LLSome of the faces are new, but the expectations are thesame as always within the world of William Paterson.Regardless of how many newcomers will fill Coach JeffAlbies’ lineup card this spring, history and a high talentlevel lead the Pioneers to believe they will again be amongthe best and brightest in the New Jersey Athletic Confer-ence, the Mid-Atlantic Region … and perhaps evennationally as well.
Below is a breakdown of the 2002 Pioneers.
PITCHINGThe game of baseball starts with who takes the ball andstands 60-feet, 6-inches from homeplate, ready and willing to silence anopposing lineup. Senior Bo Coutts(4-1, 4.12 ERA) is one of the NJAC’stop returning hurlers and will be thePioneer ace. After Coutts, Albies hasjunior Jack Baker, a highly toutedtransfer from Division I St. Peter’sCollege, who owns a durable rightarm. Three other juniors also factorinto the starting mix: CharlesBowman (3-3, 4.93 ERA) and JimCarroll (4-1, 5.62) were both in therotation last season, while DanSinger (0-2, 7.33) split time betweenstarting and relieving.
In the bullpen, either junior TimAbrantes, a transfer from SussexCounty College, or sophomore Mat Sackman(1-0, one save) will close. Both throw hard, and both hadsolid preseasons. Setting them up will be the combinationof sophomore John Petrillo (1-0) and freshmen DanCorrado, Anthony Mangine and Jake Pravkewitz. Thecoaching staff loves Petrillo’s stuff. Petrillo and thefreshmen could all end up as starters at some point.
CATCHERSIn essence, the Pioneers have two interchangeable partsbehind the plate. This is the ultimate compliment to juniorsRyan Stanek and Bryan Weingart, two strong offensiveplayers with good defensive capabilities. They split timelast season behind the plate and as designated hitters, ascenario that could play out again in 2002. Weingart (.391,12 2B, 3 HR, 26 RBI) was selected second team All-NJAC asa sophomore, while Stanek (.333, 13 RBI) is seen by thePioneer coaches as a potential pro prospect.
INFIELDGoing into this season, the main question is: Who will formthe William Paterson double-play combination? Offensewill not be a prerequisite, Albies explained, as he wants atandem that can turn two and take pressure off the Pioneer

pitchers. Senior DanSherlock (.341, 20RBI, 44 runs, team-high 17 stolen bases)and junior JasonTiseo (.316, 20 runs)started last season, but both are beingpushed by freshmanTim Banos andjunior Dan Suarez.Suarez is a transferfrom St. Peter’s,while Banos’defensive abilitiesdrew raves duringthe preseason.
On the corners, junior Mark Kalish (.314, 5 HR, 26 RBI) is atwo-year starter at first base, but is getting a strong pushfrom hotshot freshman Vin Mazzo, an all-state sluggerfrom Emerson Boro High School. At third base, freshmanTim Hoffman owns a strong stick and above-averagedefensive skills.
OUTFIELDPerhaps the team’s deepest area, the Pioneers have sixquality outfielders, a pleasant daily dilemma for Albies.Junior Bryan Graham (.331, 10 2B, 4 3B, 5 HR, 51 RBI) is alegitimate pro prospect who scouts have been
watching for twoyears; he will startin right field.Sophomore JesseCardoza (.358, 2HR, 13 RBI) willlikely start in leftafter a terrificfreshmancampaign. Theprobable starter incenter is juniorRonald Hayward,a top-flight JUCOplayer at Bishop(AL) CommunityCollege after
getting drafted out of Marist High School by the CincinnatiReds. Hayward is fleet-footed and a five-tool player worthwatching this season.
There is much more to the Pioneer outfield, though. Theirthree backups are all freshmen, but all are quality perform-ers. Dwayne Dowell is fast and has shown a great deal ofbaseball smarts. Andrew Diaz and John Katsigiannis bothswing strong bats and could vie for time not only in theoutfield, but also at designated hitter.

LLHead Coach28th Season
Within the William Paterson athletic department, colleagues like to kid Albies about his status as alegend. Considering his resume, calling him one ofthe greatest to ever coach Division III baseball is nota stretch.
Since inheriting the reins in 1975, Albies has turnedthe Pioneers into a national power, a program forothers to admire and emulate. Simply put, he knowsthe game and he knows how to relate to his student-athletes on such a level that William Paterson haswon two national championships (1992 and 1996),appeared in the Division III College World Seriesseven times, taken home 11 New Jersey AthleticConference titles, and enjoyed 23 straight winningseasons. His career record says it all: 732 wins, 310losses, 10 ties.
Beyond the numbers, though, Albies knows how torecruit and nurture talent. Twenty-eight players havesigned professional contracts largely thanks to histutelage, spanning from former New York Yankeeand Chicago White Sox slugger Dan Pasqua to ShaunStokes, a seventh-round selection of the St. LouisCardinals in 2000.
Albies himself has professional baseball experience, having played second base in the Atlanta Bravesorganization for three years and also professionallyin Canada for two seasons. From there, he embarkedon a strong career playing for the Westwood Mer-chants of the Metropolitan Baseball League; he wasinducted into the league’s Hall of Fame in 1990. Healso managed one summer in the prestigious CapeCod League, where the country’s top amateurplayers regularly gather every summer. In addition,he was a guest of the Romania Baseball Federation in1993 and gave clinics in the country.
In addition to his on-field successes, Albies was alsothe national baseball chairman of the NCAA DivisionIII Championships committee and the NCAADivision III Mid-Atlantic Region. He has also servedon the NCAA Division III All-American, NCAASelection and Legislative Action, and ABCA All-America committees.

REMEMBERING THE 1992NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
There was the crack of the bat, the sight of the ball clearingthe wall, and then the euphoria spilling out onto the field.Once Ralph Perdomo connected on the game-winning, three-run homer to beat California Lutheran, 3-1, in the bottom ofthe ninth inning, William Paterson became the proud ownerof its first baseball national championship.
Thanks to Perdomo, the Pioneers finished 36-7 (14-2 NJAC)and won their final 12 games while also taking the NewJersey Athletic Conference and Mid-Atlantic Regional titlesfor their trophy case.
Perdomo was named the World Series MVP after hitting.471 under the bright lights; he finished with a .359average, 60 hits, a team-high 52 runs and 47 RBI en routeto being named an All-American, All-Region and All-NJAC.Junior outfielder Keith Eaddy was also a first team All-American, leading the team in hits (68), RBI (61) anddoubles (18). The last of the All-American trio, senioroutfielder John DiGirolamo, scratched out 61 hits, scored 46runs and belted 11 doubles.
On the mound, juniors Scott Farber and Rob Grahamshowed plenty of poise. Farber beat Cal-Lutheran in the titlegame to finish the season 8-0 with four saves and a 2.67ERA. Graham went 7-0 with a 2.40 ERA; two of his victoriescame in the Series.

LL REMEMBERING THE 1996NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
Mark DeMenna provided more home-run heroics, sending athree-run homer soaring over the fence to help the Pioneers(39-5-1) score a 6-5 victory over California Lutheran to givethem their second national championship in five years andcapped the best season in school history.
There were no shortage of heroes on this team. Juniorshortstop Brian Lindner would get drafted by the SeattleMariners after posting one of the finest offensive seasons inPioneer history. He set school single-season records for hits(84), RBI (79) and doubles (19) while also batting .440 witheight home runs en route to making the All-American firstteam. In addition, he formed an incredible double-playcombination with sophomore second baseman DanLautherhahn (.378, 38 runs), as they turned 40 of the team’sNCAA-best 55 twin killings.
DeMenna, a sophomore center fielder, also had a bigseason. Ditto for senior right fielder Brian Kelly (.400, 172B, 9 HR, 47 RBI, 53 runs), a second team All-American,and junior catcher Dan Egbert (.366, 36 runs, 11 2B, 31RBI). One of the all-time Pioneer greats, senior thirdbaseman Paul Bumbaco, hit .331 with 33 runs scored andfinished as the Pioneer leader in hits (226), RBI (182),doubles (50) and at-bats (620).
On the mound, juniors Brian Appelman (school-record 11-0,3.61 ERA, 75 strikeouts in 92.1 innings) and BobSlomkowski (9-0, 2.86 ERA) both had strong seasons.Appelman was named an All-American. Freshman EduardoGomez (8-1) also was strong for the Pioneers.
