The past year was bittersweet for Marin Agricultural Land Trust. Last November we lost Ellen Straus, and in July Ellens husband Bill passedaway. It is impossible to overstate the importance of Ellen and Bill to ma l t , in every phase of its life. From the init ial vision t hat a privateorganization could play a meaningful role in the preservation of agriculture in Marin County, to the extraordinary success mal t has achieved oveits first 23 years, Ellens tireless efforts, her unflagging optimism, and her ability to project en thusiasm and commitment to others were essentialconstants in mal t s growth. To perpetuate Ellens vision, we have renamed the fund through which we do all of our conservation easement projectsthe Ellen Straus Farmland Preservation Fund. We will miss Ellen and Bill deeply, but their vision will continue to inspire us for years to come.On the sweet side, every conservation easement project is a milestone, and this year we completed two, bringing the total of farmland permanentlyprotected for agriculture to more than 32,000 acres. The acquisition of an easement on the 307-acre Zimmerman Ranch in Marshall overlookingTomales Bay made possible the transfer of the property to the next generation. mal t also purchased an easement on the 208-acre Leiss Ranch closto Petaluma and the Marin-Sonoma County line, permanently protecting it from subdivision and non-agricultural development. Both reflect ourcontinuing progress in protecting Marins agricultural landscape, and the enduring commitment of these families to their land and farming heritage.

While agriculture here, as elsewhere, faces challenges from rising land values and the globalization of production and markets, a truly excitingtrend is the diversification taking place on local farms and ranches. From organic row crops to grass-fed beef to value-added products likefarmstead cheese, ma l t has encouraged this trend by co-sponsoring with UC Cooperative Extension and Marin Organic a series of well-attended workshops for producers interested in learning about farming and marketing options.

M a l t has long understood the importance of public support not only to agricultural land conservation, but also to the future of agricultureitself. Seven years ago we created education and communications departments. We initiated a small offering of hikes, tours, and special events tolet the public sample products of Marins farms and ranches and to get to know the owners and producers. This year we completed a strategic planfor education which acknowledged its importance t o the future of agriculture in Marin and set goals to increase our capacity for connecting landand people. We also prepared our first marketing plan to highlight in a broader geographic area ma l ts support of the tradition and the future of Marin agriculture. This effort continues in a series of credits about ma l t airing on kqed- fmand completely underwritten by a generous donor.

We now have before us more opportunities to preserve land t han at any time in our history, and the greatest challenge we have ever faced toobtain the funding necessary to complete these projects. We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our members and donors, whose supportsustains and encourages us. We are confident that with your continued partnership, we will be able to preserve the agricultural land that is suchan important part of the heart and soul of this place that is so dear to all of us.

Easement Acquisition and Stewardship M a l t was the first agricultural land trust in the United States. By offering landowners a conservation alternative to the sale or developmentof their farm property, ma l t has permanently protected more than 32,000 acres that might otherwise have been sold or subdivided. Th is yearwe purchased conservation easements on the Leiss Ranch in Chileno Valley and th e Zimmerman Ranch in Marshall, and we are pushing aheadon several easement projects we hope to complete by the end of 2003.

Our ability to continue this successful program hinges on our having funds available to meet the cost of an easement as determined by anindependent appraisal. Until 1998, ma l t had a steady source of easement funding available through Proposition 70 , passed by California votein 1988. By 1998, those dollars were mostly depleted, and we turned to a capital funding strategy that raised $1 0 million. Currently, the goaof the easement program is to leverage, to the greatest extent possible, private and public money.

This year, for th e first time in ma l t s history an easement was funded en tirely through grants from the California Coastal Conservancy andthe California Department of Conservations California Farmland Conservancy Program. We secured almost $700,000 from these two agencieApproximately $2.3 million dollars more in public agency grants for projects to be completed in fiscal year 2003-2004 havd already beenapproved.

But challenges to the landscape and to agricultural productivity continue to present themselves long after conservation easement acquisitionsare completed. Noxious weeds and soil erosion, for example, can profoundly impact the lands ability to support agriculture as well as native plantsand wildlife.

To meet these ongoing challenges, ma l t must maintain a vigorous stewardship program. A primary objective is to fulfill the legal responsibilitiesma l t accepts as easement holder. Visiting protected ranches annually and archiving reports and photographs have become significant effortsas weve grown. Equally important is our commitment to maintaining excellent relationships with those who own and continue to managethe ranches. Toward this end, ma l t s annual Landowner Dinner was initiated three years ago to show appreciation for those who have protectedtheir property under ma l t easements. The dinner is highly regarded by the agricultural community and was completely underwritten this yearby a generous ma l t member through The Community Fund of the Marin Community Foundation.

M a l t continues to support sound management on easement-protected ranches by consulting regularly with landowners, sponsoring seminars andworkshops, and providing a vital stream of information on management issues. Through the Stewardship Assistance Program, a grant programinitiated two years ago with funds raised in the capital campaign, ma l t allocated $24,890 in the past fiscal year to protect over a mile of creek andriparian areas and several springs that are importan t water sources for both livestock and wildlife. Four addition al grants totaling $53,000 havebeen approved for 2003-04.

Through our easement acquisition and stewardship programs, West Marin landowners and ma l t supporters cooperate to safeguard a bountifuharvest and a healthy landscape.

Education and Outreach M a l ts Education Department has been building relationships between the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors of our community forthe past seven years because we believe that to preserve farmland in active agriculture, we must also preserve peoples connections to the land.Th is year, along with ranchers, growers, and producers, we welcomed more than 3,000 people to 35 hikes, ranch tours, and talks.

By nurturing peoples relationship to the land, we can help keep the land healthy and productive for generations to come. This means teaching

communities about the social, environmental, and scenic values enhanced by our family farms. It means educating consumers about the importanceof buying local products so farmers can stay in business. And it means connecting our children with the wonders of agriculture so they grow up tobe adults who will support Marin farms.

M a l t volunteers have played a critical role in making these links. They contribute generously in many ways and also have made their ownpersonal connections with the land, the farmers and ranchers, and with each other. These associations help them become a powerful communityof advocates for family farms.

Under a new strategic plan for education developed this year, we hope to give more adults and children t he opportunity to visit farms andlearn about local agriculture. We also hope to partner with a wider variety of organizations and community groups to get our message out toother sectors of the Bay Area community.

Nurturing the next generation of land stewards is the shared goal of two collaborative projects in which ma l t participates. While the goalsof the Marin Agricultural and Education Alliance ( ma ea) and the Marin Food Systems Project ( mf sp) overlap, their activities differ.

In June, ma ea hosted the 5th annual Marin Summer Agricultural Institute for teachers and has now connected more than 13 0 teachers wfarms and the curricular materials needed to t each students about t heir connections to food and farming. New this year was the Marin FarmField Studies Program which allowed some 30 0 students to experience farms and be awed by the size of Holstein cows or eat fresh green beansstraight from the field.

The mf sp is working with schools to pass and implement policies that integrate curricular connections to local agriculture, environmentaleducation, garden-based ecological lessons, nutrition, and healthy school food. In the last year, two more school food policies were passed andschools moved closer countywide to involving parents, teachers, food service directors, and school nurses in an ongoing dialogue to connect schoolsto local farms and fresh food.

In the year ahead, as we work to protect farmland for future generations through the purchase of conservation easements, ma l t also willcontinue to act as an incubator for innovative and effective programs that encourage agricultural literacy, raise awareness of local farming,and encourage healthy relationships between people and the land.

Since its founding in 1980 , ma l t has led the way in farmland preservation in the United States. ma l t s success has been the result of inspiratioon the part of its founders and dedication on the part of those who have followed in their footsteps.
