ProQuest document link Abstract: President [Bush] meets today with French President Jacques Chirac and speaks by satellite to a

group of Central European leaders, beginning two weeks of intensive public diplomacy meant to shore up world

support for U.S.-led military operations in Afghanistan. The main thrust of the latest statesmanship is to counter

rumblings across Europe and elsewhere that a month of U.S.- led military strikes in Afghanistan is grinding

uncertainly toward winter, with no sign of rooting out Osama bin Laden, his al Qaeda terrorist organization or its

Taliban backers. Next week, Bush hosts Russian President Vladimir Putin for a White House summit, followed

by a visit to his ranch in Crawford. In addition to the war on terrorism, the two leaders are expected to focus on

mutual cuts in nuclear arms and Bush's plans for building a controversial ballistic missile defense system.

Chirac, who expressed support for Bush in a White House visit last month, has offered several dozen warplanes

to the effort. So far, Bush has declined, citing the difficulty of integrating the French pilots into a complex and

    hastily executed air campaign.
