Not too much can besaid for the new 2001Pontiac Aztek, at leastfrom an aestheticperspective. A crossbetween a mini-van,mini-SUV and theChevrolet Vega, youmight say this is oneugly vehicle. Rivaledonly by Volkswagen’sThing, apparentlysomeone within GMtook what was probablya good idea and beat itwith an ugly-stick. (Seephotograph 1.)

In the new wave oftransponder-equippedvehicles, the Aztek, utilizing GM’s PKIIIsecurity system, is fullyfield-serviceable.Although the locks arefamiliar and easy toservice, with a few

exceptions, theHuf producedlocks and lockcomponents areavailablethrough dealerchannels only.

As a single keycar, the Aztekemploys GM’sCorporate headkey blank withan embeddedtransponder, andthe CSS orComponent SetStrategy column.Although Hufproduces theoriginal keys, theIlco B99PT or JetB99PHT can beused. (Seephotograph 2.)

Still, for all ofits visual

inadequacies, theone saving graceof the Aztek isthat it isextremely easy toservice. Withminor differences, the ignition lockservice followsstandard CSScolumnprocedures; andthe door andtailgate locks areseparate from thehandles, allowingfor fast, easyremoval andservice.

Opening:

Door locksappear on boththe driver andpassenger doors.

9. By design, the upper shroud cannot be removed without firstremoving the lock cylinder.

7. The screws on this column are unusually long.

8. The upper shroud screws are T15 Torx. Theone shown here is located on the ignition sideof the column, just beside the Theft Deterrent

Module or TDM.

10. Carefully removing the knob from the lock cylinder allows the upper shroud to be removed.

11. Turn the lock to START/CRANK, insert a probe into the lock retainer access hole, depress the lock retainer and remove the lock cylinder.

Opening can beaccomplished in anumber of ways, including picking orimpressioning. If usingopening tools, the lockbutton linkage rod iseasily accessible.

Wedge the door openapproximately 6 to 8 inchesfrom the edge of the door.(See photograph 3.) Using aslide lock tool, locate thelock button rod and unlockthe door. As the lock buttonrod is in close proximity tothe latch linkage rod, thelock linkage rod may bepositioned as either the topor bottom rod, dependingon where the slide lock toolis placed in the door. (Seephotograph 4.)

Ignition Lock:

Although using thefamiliar CSS column, theAztek does present a fewminor differences forproper disassembly. (Seephotograph 5.) Like otherversions of this columnthat are used in GMtrucks and vans, theupper shroud cannot beremoved without firstremoving the lockcylinder. Unlike otherversions of this column, itis not necessary toremove the tilt lever, andthe knob portion of thecylinder can be removedand replaced withoutdamaging the lock orknob. This single featureallows not only for fastremoval of the uppershroud, it is an open doorto easily picking andremoving the lockcylinder.

Begin by using a #2 13. Although similar, neither Strattec nor BWD aftermarket tumblers will workproperly in Aztek’s original ignition lock.

12. The larger knob of the Aztek ignition cylinder is apparent. The original lock isavailable through dealers only. Note the unique sidebar design. See the Aztek

Ignition Lock sidebar on page 18, for more information on this lock.

Page 7: 2001 Pontiac Aztec · 6 • Automotive Edge National Locksmith Automobile Association Opening can be accomplished in a number of ways, including picking or impressioning. If using

Phillips screwdriver toremove the shroud’smounting screws. (Seephotograph 6.) Thesescrews are unusuallylong. (See photograph 7.)

Hooks or tabs holdingthe shroud halvestogether can be found atthe back of the shroudpieces. Carefully drop thelower shroud, makingsure that these tabs aredisengaged beforeremoving the shroud.

With the lower shroudremoved, the screwsholding the upper shroudto the column can beaccessed. Unlike otherversions of this column, the upper shroud usesT20 Torx mounting boltsand not the usual E5inverted Torx. (Seephotograph 8.)

By design the uppershroud passes behindthe knob of the lockcylinder and cannot becompletely removedwithout first removingthe lock cylinder. (Seephotograph 9.) On theother hand, the retainerfor removing the lockcylinder is hiddenbeneath the uppershroud. This presents aninteresting problem forlocksmiths andtechnicians wishing toservice this lock.

Fortunately, unlikeother columns of thistype, the knob from thelock cylinder can beremoved and replaced. To remove the lockcylinder knob, gentlyuse a large straightblade screwdriver and

14. In an emergency, the standard, smaller knobbed CSS ignition lock and thesmaller PKIII key blanks can be substituted for the larger knobbed Aztek lock.

15. The Aztek door panel holds no surprises and is easy to remove.

Page 8: 2001 Pontiac Aztec · 6 • Automotive Edge National Locksmith Automobile Association Opening can be accomplished in a number of ways, including picking or impressioning. If using

pry the knob off of thecylinder. Carefullywork the perimeter ofthe knob so that it canbe reused. (Seephotograph 10.) Also seethe Aztek Ignition Locksidebar on page 18, formore information onthe ignition lockcylinder.

With the uppershroud removed thelock housing isexposed. And, althoughserviced in a similarmanner to other CSSlock housings, thehousing on the Aztek iscompletely different inshape and form.

Because cylinderremoval requires thatthe lock be turned tothe START/CRANKposition, it isrecommended that thebattery be disconnectedto prevent damage tothe vehicle’s starter.

As an alternative todisconnecting thebattery, on Aztek’sequipped with anautomatic transmission, the vehicle’s neutralsafety switch can beengaged to disable theSTART/CRANKfunction. To accomplishthis, first turn thewheels and set theemergency brakes toprevent vehiclemovement duringservice. Rotate the lockcylinder to the ONposition and move theshifter to the neutral ordrive position.

With the starterdisabled, the lock

cylinder can now beremoved. Use a key, pick the lock or drillthe lock’s sidebar torotate the lockcylinder to theSTART/CRANKposition. (See theAztek Ignition Locksidebar on page 18,for more informationon picking this lock.)

If a working key isnot used to turn thelock, to preventcostly damage to thebuzzer actuatorswitch, cut a blankkey with all 4 depthsand insert it into thelock cylinder beforeturning past the ONposition. If a key isnot available, insert apick and raise theswitch to clear theshearline of the lockcylinder.

Once the lock isturned to theSTART/CRANKposition, insert aprobe into the retaineraccess hole anddepress the lockretainer. The lock cannow be removed fromthe lock housing. (Seephotograph 11.)

If it is necessary toreplace the lock, original cylinders areavailable throughdealers only. (Seephotograph 12.)

Unfortunately, theaftermarket servicetumblers and springsfrom Strattec andBWD will notproperly work. (Seephotograph 13.) For an

aftermarket replacement, try using the Strattec#704600 or 704601 (pushbutton). Althoughdesigned for use inPasslock or MRDequipped GM’s, they willoperate using the originalcorporate head key.

In an emergency, thesmaller knobbedcylinders, Strattec #702671and #702672 (push buttonor BWD #LC1353 and#LC1354 (push button),and PKIII key blanks,Strattec #598936 (75groove) or #599260 (88groove) can besubstituted. (Seephotograph 14.)

Door Lock:

Removing thedoor lock isstraightforwardand simple. Nospecial tools arerequired. (Seephotograph 15.)

Using a #3Phillipsscrewdriver,remove the threebolts that hold thepanel to the door. Then use apanel/trimremoval tool toloosen the doorpanel from thedoor. (Seephotograph 16.)Disconnect anyconnectors andremove the panel. When replacingthe panel, takenote as each screwis of a differentlength. (Seephotograph 17.)

barrier, the lock iseasily accessed.Simply removethe door clip andslide the lock outthe front of thedoor. (Seephotograph 18.)Disconnect thelock linkage rodclip to completethe removal. (Seephotograph 19.)

Once removed, the tumblers canbe view from thedrain hole at thebottom of thelock. (Seephotograph 20.)The door locksand componentsare availablethrough dealersonly. There are noknownsubstitutions atthis time. Whendisassembling thelock, be careful

not to lose the detent ballbearing and spring foundat the front of the lock. Also note that there areseven opposing wafers andno sidebar. (See photograph21.)

Tailgate Lock:

Like the door locks, thetailgate lock is not part of ahandle assembly and isrelatively easy to removeand service. (Seephotograph 22.)

Begin tailgate lockremoval by first openingthe tailgate by using a keyor picking the tailgate lock,or by hitting the releasefrom inside the vehicle.Unique to the Aztek, thewindow is latched to thetailgate by twoelectronically controlledlatches located at the ends

22. Like the door locks, the tailgate lock is not part of a handle and is easily removed forservice.

23. Open the tailgate to begin lock removal.

of the tailgate, insteadof the typical singlepiece center mountedmechanical latch. (Seephotograph 23.)

With the tailgatelowered, use a #2Phillips screwdriverto remove the panelscrews from eachcorner of the panel.(See photograph 24.)

Use the samescrewdriver toremove the two #2Phillips screws thathold the latch releasehandle in place. (Seephotograph 25.)

Use a panel/trimremoval tool to lift thepanel from the back ofthe tailgate. (Seephotograph 26.)

Aside from the fewscrews, the tailgatepanel is held to the

tailgate via plastic clips.(See photograph 27.) Becareful not to break orlose these clips whilelifting the panel. (Seephotograph 28.)

With the panelremoved, you will seetwo electronicallycontrolled windowlatches that are mountedto the corner surface ofthe tailgate. Note the wireloop attached to the sideof the latch. This wire isused as an emergencyrelease should power tothe latches not beavailable and the handleinoperative. Duringnormal operation, thereleases for the latches arehidden behind thetailgate trim panel.

24. Remove the trim panel screws.

25. Remove the inside latch handle.

Should they need to beused, it is necessary topull as much of thepanel away from thedoor as possible toaccess the releases.(See photograph 29.)

With the panelremoved, peel back theplastic vapor barrier togain access to thetailgate lock. Note thatthere is no linkage rodsattached to the lock, itis simply an electronicswitch that is used toactivate the windowlatches. A single doorclip holds the lock inplace. (See photograph30.)

Remove the doorclip, and thendisconnect the lockswitch’s electricalconnector. (Seephotograph 31.) Thetailgate lock can nowbe removed forservice. (See

photograph 32.) A view ofthe bottom of the lockshows all seven tumblerswithin the lock. (Seephotograph 33.)

Like the door locks, thetailgate lock is availablethrough dealers only. There are no knownsubstitutions.

Glove Box Lock:

Servicing the glove boxlock on the Aztek is assimple as servicing thelocks on the rest of thevehicle. (See photograph34.)

To remove, open theglove box and removethe two #2 Phillips

26. Lift and remove the panel from the door.

27. Except for a few screws, the tailgate panel is held to the door via clips.

Pick the lock to the locked position, depress the lockretainer and remove the plug. (See photograph 36.)

Programming Procedures:

Several important points need to be made beforeattempting to duplicate or generate new keys for theAztek.

* When performing on board programmingprocedures, only a Master key can be used to open theprogramming mode.

* Only a total of ten keys can be programmed intovehicles equipped with the PKIII system.

* When duplicating, if ten keys are alreadyprogrammed into the vehicle, the attempt to addanother key will fail. No existing keys will be deletedor removed from the system.

* When generating new keys using the on boardmethod, all existing keys are deleted or removed fromthe system. Any keys that were previously in thesystem can be added again using the on boardduplicating method.

* Finally, when duplicating, two methods areavailable - Cloning and actual duplicating.

Cloning requires the use of aftermarketREAD/WRITE keys and either Jets ETD-1 or Ilco’s RW2to clone an existing key. When using this method, theduplicated key is an exact clone or duplicate of theoriginal, the transponder code and all. The vehicle’sPKIII system will not be able to determine whether theoriginal or duplicated key is being used.

Actual duplicating requires either aftermarket ororiginal equipment READ only keys. Each duplicatedkey will have it’s own unique transponder code. Thevehicle’s PKIII system is capable of discerning thedifference between this key and others that have beenprogrammed into the vehicle.

For the purposes of the article, only actualprogramming is covered. For more information oncloning using Jet’s ETD-1 or Ilco’s RW2 see a Jet or Ilcodealer, or see Saber Tool’s transponder web site(www.sabertool.com) on cloning keys.

Key Duplication:

1. Duplicate an original working Master key onto annon-programmed transponder key.

29. Two electronically controlled window latches areattached to each corner of the tailgate. Each latch

includes an emergency release wire.

30. A single door clip holds the tailgate lock in place.

28. Be careful not to break or lose these panel clipsduring trim panel removal.

Manufactured by Huf, the Pontiac Aztek ignitionlock has some unique features that both aid andchallenge the locksmith in the servicing of the lock.Following are some of these features.

Aztec Ignition Lock SidebarRemoving the Knob:

Unlike CSS cylinders designed and built by othermanufactures, the knob portion of the Aztekignition lock can be removed and replaced withoutpermanently damaging the lock. Held on by aninternal expanding snap ring, by prying around theperimeter the knob with a large flat bladescrewdriver, the knob can be gradually worked offof the cylinder. (See photograph 37.)

36. Once picked, the plug’s retainer can be depressed and the pluglock serviced.

Once removed, the snap ring on the cylinder isclearly visible. (See photograph 38.) Whenreplacing the knob, make sure that the knob isseated firmly on the face of the cylinder and thatthe snap ring is expanded into and properlyseated in the knob. (See photograph 39.)

Picking the Lock:

The sidebar design of the Aztek lock allows itto be easily picked. (See photograph 40.) Unlikethe sidebar construction of other CSS cylinders, the sidebar of the Aztek lock is not staked intothe side of the cylinder and is a completely

separate component.(See photograph 41.) Thissame Huf design is usedon all 1997 and up Saturnlocks. When all the locktumblers are removed, the sidebar can beremoved and reinstalledfrom the face of the plug.(See photograph 42.)Removed, the sidebarsprings can be seensitting in the springpockets of the sidebar.(See photograph 43.)

Begin picking by firstremoving the knob tofully exposes the sidebarand the tumblers. (Seephotograph 44.)

Use a piece ofmechanics wire (astraightened paperclipwill work) and a lockpick to manipulate eachtumbler so that thesidebar notch aligns

with the sidebar. Place the wire near the sidebar, whileusing the pick to pull the first tumbler down until thesidebar notch is visible. Insert the wire into the sidebarnotch, holding the tumbler in place. Proceed to the nexttumbler and repeat the process. Repeat for eachtumbler.

When all tumblers have been aligned, slowly removethe wire, allowing the sidebar to fall into place. The lockis picked.

38. The snap ring on the cylinder holds the knob firmly in place.

39. The backside of the removed knob.

40. The sidebar design in this cylinder makes picking possible, and is identical to the 1997 and up Saturn sidebar design.
