The station GB?LBN was established at Barns Ness Lighthouse, Dunbar, East Lothian which is situated approximately 30miles to the East of Edinburgh. The station was active from 0830 on the 196 August until 14:00 on the 206 August (timesUTC) with a break of a few hours over night. The bands worked were 80, 40, 20, 15, 1 0 and 2 metres. The very first contactmade and the only one on 2 metres was with W5UN on 2M EME, now that must be a first for Lighthouses weekend. Thecontact was made using a FT1000MP, MUTEK 2M Transverter, a 100Watt 2M Linear inlo a 17 element Tonna pointed at themoon. 80M only produced I contact, 10M produced 7, 15M produced 67 with 20M producing 192 and 40M a 199 contacts.A total of 467 contactrs being made. About half of what we managed during 1999 but this year the extremely bad weather onthe Saturday affecting band conditions plus not so many operators as in previous yesrs were the main factors. Below we2 ta'bles below showing the countries worked and the Lighthouses/Lightships that were contacted.Lastly for information all the QSL Cards for the weekend were posted to the RSGB Bureau on Monday 2I't August so no oneshould complain about not receiving a card from GBZLBN.In summary those who took part enjoyed the whole event and we are now looking forward to next year"s event.

On24 August 2000 the Club visited the Blue Circleone of our members, Landles F eur}latrl GM4XZZ.tdp as the quarry is very impressive.

Page 5

Quarry to g0 oo a tour organised byThis tumed out to be an excellent

Started in 1963, the quarry was established to supply a cement works with limestone, italso supplies shale and sandstone.

The quarry has slowly moved across the landscape in the intervening yeaf,s,followiag theseam of limestone which is gradually getting closer to the surface, they fill in the hole leftbehind with the waste from the next section making it impossible to tell where theoriginal hole was.

The limestone Eearn is about 25 meters thick and is quarried scraping off the surface soiland then drilling into the rock and blasting sections away. There are layers of sandstone

searn on the right. The second higher ledge

*1d slegnesium to get &rough before wereach the profrtable limestone. Sections ateblasted loose, lifted into huge dumper trucksand carried up to ari even huger crushingplant where the rocks are ground down to asize that the cement factaty can handle.

In this view you can see most of theworkings, the quarry is working from left toright, the old hole is being filled up with thewaste from the nert secti.on. The flat bit inthe middle is where rock is being extractedapd you can see the edge of the limestone

is a layer of sandstone.

The white area with the two drilling rigs is the next bit to be blasted away, the white isthe dust from dozens on holes drilled ready to be filled with explosives. The little orangehut is 'the loneliest place in the world' where the shot blaster works from.

Page 6: 200010

Inside the crushet control room,

unfortunately they had a power cut at that

moment so everything had come to a halt,

this meant much running about for the men

on site t ying to get po\r/er restored as this

would delay all their operations' Every&ing

is timed to biast out the rock and deliver it

to the cement plant via the crusher in a

continuous process ie blast some rock, take

a couple of days to truck it up to the crusher

and then repeat! The crusher can handle

1000 tons and hour.

Here you can see the digget and one of

the trucks which carr carry 60-80 tons of

rock at a irne, each of the digger shovels

werghs 22 tonsl

A closer look at one of the dumper trucks

delivering a load to the crusher - just

before rilie got a ride in one!To get anideaof the scaleo I had to reach

up to grasp the bottom of the handrail

while climbitgtp into the cab. Therc is a

set of steps leading up to the 'bonnet'where you walk over to the cab.

Inside it is quite small, really oniy intended

for one persolt but there are two seats. The gontrols are similar te a ca\a gear

selector (its semi-automatic) a steering

wheel and foot pedals for accelerator and

brake. There is a screen in the cab to

monitor the rear as well as a set of huge

rnirrors, lastly there is a scale to indicate

how healry the load is - in tons! The ride down to the blasting face is

surprisingfy bump|, it looked smoofhfrom the outside.

So we have to exteod a huge thank Youto everyone at Blue Ckcle, Dunbar fot aninteresting and informative trip. Thequarq, is on a scale that one can onlygrasp by being there they use somegenuinely huge machines to do a hugejob, shiftingmillions of tons of rock.

Lots of auroral activity on VHF which has resulted in poorer conditions on HF over the past month. The updates are stillrelatively few and far between but John MM0CCC has decided to join us again and add some more interest to proceedings. His 144MHz only total this month has he$ed boost the table a bit. Here is the info I have received...

The first update to arrive this month was one &om Bob GN{AUYZ. He has had a quiet couple of months due to the manyevents we have at this time of the year and work commitments. However, he still has a few new ones to add. One of thesewas a contact with GM4WLL/P during our Summer Isles Expedition which gives Bob IO78 as a new l44Mllz square. Allthe new ones are... 7lv[Ilz : Wales(GW); 14MHz : Croatia(9A), Germany@L), France(F), European Russia(UAl);zI}.&lz: Ukraine(tlR); l44lvlllz: Scotland(IO78). In total that gives Bob an extra 6 on FIF and 1 on VHF.

The award for this month's biggest number of additions goes to John MM0CCC who joins the VHF tables for the first timethis year. He has submitted a 744lvfrIz only total so far but say he hopes to add 7}\/fttz scores to next months submission.John has been quite busy on 2m with some aurora and a bit of tropo too to help boost his total. That places him 2"d on 2m inthe tables. His score comes from... l44lvfrlz:N.Ireland(IO64), Scotland(Io68, IO75,IA76,IO78, IO85, 1086, IO87,IO89), England(IO?0, IO80, IO81, IO82, IO83, IO84, IO90, IO9l, IO92, IO93, IO94, IO95, JO00, JO01, JO02, JO03),Wales(Io7l, IAT},Isle Of Man(IO74), France(JN09), Germany(JN3g, JN49, JN57, JN58, JO30, JO31, 1040, JA4l,IO42,JO52, JO53), Switzerland(JN46), Czech Republic(JN79). Belgium(J0l0, JOll, JO20)" Netherlands(J0zl, 1022, JO32,JO33), Denmark(JO44) An impressive, l44MiIz only, score of 62 on VHF for John.

Kent SM0ELViON9CLV e-mailed me to say that he couldn't give an update as he has temporarily misplaced his log! Asusual though, he passes on his regards to all at the club.

Another busy month at GMOCLN. Unfortunately very little of the activity has been valid for the tables. I have been to theSummer Isles with David GM4WLL and Jim MMOBQI where we put approximately 2500 QSOs in the logs between us. Itwas great to work various club members on both IIF and VHF, giving most a new IOTA reference or locator square. How-ever, due to the resulting preparations, my shack was packed up for over a week (probably nearer two) and my tables score istherefore low this time round. My additions for the tables this month are. .. 14WIz : Monaco(3A), Puerto Rico(KP3);l44l\&Iz: England(JO08). A not so impressive total of 2 more on FIF and I on \{HF.

Could you please make sure that I receive your next updates by Wednesday 186 October at the latest.Good DX errd73 until next month.

What follows is a brief summary of this years club entry for the RSGB IOTA Contest. This was submitted last month but dueto space constraints it had to be carried over to this issue. As I am sure you all know we went to the Island Of Tiree againand this year used the callsign GM2T. The 75 DXCC countries we worked were....

In total, during the 24 hours of the contest, we managed to work 1554 stations of which 18 were duplicates. The breakdownof vaiid contacts was....

Our final score was 9372 QSO points x 219 multipliers = 2,052,468 points

A good result, but one which could have been better, if we had managed to operate without computer network RF problemson 40m and 80m. A11 we need to do now is wait for the official results to be published sometime nexl year.

CLT'B LIBRARYSome time ago a suggestion was made by Vic GM4GGF that club members willing to lend out any technical publications toother mernbers should provide a list for publication in the newsletter. Bob GM4IJYZ submitted his list some time ago and dueto a lapse on my part it was never published. My apologies to both Bob and Vic for this lapse Ron GM4IKU
