Thepleatingtechniques,matboard,andturnlockaren’tsohardontheirown,butallamassedtogethertheystarttomakethisprojectalittledifficult.

Thisprojectisajournalcoverthat’smadetofitatypicalcompositionbook.Theinnersidefeatures8pencilpocketsandtheoutsidefeaturesaturnlockclosure.ItwasinspiredbyJulesVerneandismeanttoinvokeimagesofjournalingwhiletravelingunderthesea.

matchingupyourpencilpocketpiecemainfabricpiece

withitscorrespondingliningpiece.Lineuptheupperrawedge,matchingthesinglenotch,thensewthetwolayerstogether.Presstheseam,thenflipthepiecesoversotherightsidesarefacingout.Thenpressthepieceagainsothetopedgeiscrisp.

Nowwe’regoingtostartbuildingthepencilslots.Takeyourfabricpiece

labeledJournalInside-Left,andlineupthebottomleft

cornerwiththebottomleftcornerofyourpencilpocketpiece.Thepocketshouldbelongerthantheinnerjournalpieceandrunofftheedge,butwe’regoingtopleatthepocketuntilitfits.BeginbybastingtheleftsideofthepencilpockettotheJournalInside-Left.Thenstitchthepocketinplacealongthefirststitchinglineasthepictureillustrates.

We’regoingtoformtheslotsbyfoldingthepocketalongthepleatlines.HereyouseeI’vetakenthefirstpleatlineandfoldedittowardstherecentlysewnstitchline.Withthatfoldinplace,sewthenextstitchlineasindicatedbythepatternguideline.Ifyou’redoingitright,thebottomedgeofyourpocketpiecewillalwaysbeflushwiththebottomedgeofyourJournalInside-Leftpiece.

Here’sthenextpleatbeingmade.Onceagain,foldthenextpleatlinetowardsthepreviousstitchingline,thensewthenextstitchinglinebesideit.Thepatternguide-linesindicatewheretopleatandwheretostitch,sodon’tletallthedifferentlinesbogyoudown.

Hereitiswithallthepleatsandstitchlinesmade.Whenthelaststitchline

isdone,therightsideofyourpocketpieceshouldbe

perfectlyflushwiththerightsideofyourJournalInside-Leftpiece.Ifit’snot,youmightwanttocheckthatallofyourpleatsweredonecorrectly,theyshouldberoomyenoughtofitapencil.Ifeverythingseemsfinethough,don’tworrytoomuchabouttheexcessfabricandjusttrimitoff,thenbastetherightsideofthepocketsectiontotheJournalInside-Leftpiece.

Withthepleatsallmadeandthesidessecurelyinplace,bastethebottom

sectioninplaceaswell.Besureallthepleatsarefoldedin

thesamedirectionforthebestlook.Youmaywanttoironthemifyouwantaverycrisplook,butit’snotnecessary.Nowcongrat-ulateyourself,becauseyoujustfinishedthepencilpocketsection!

GrabyourJournalInside-Centerpieceandlineupyourbookslotalongtherightedgeofthepiece.Matchuptherawedgesanditshouldlineupastheguidelinesindicate.Bastetheslotinplacealongthebottom,top,andsides.

Nextyou’llwanttotakeyourInsideJournalLeftandCenterpiecesand

sewthemtogether.Matchuptheirrawedgesalongthe

notchedside,thensewthemtogetheralongthatedge.Thisissothatwhenyoupresstheseamopen,theystillremainontheleftandcenter,respectively.

Lastlyyou’lladdtheremainingsection,theJournalInside-Rightsection.

Matchupthedouble-notchededgeofbothpieces.

Thisseamwillbebasted,aswe’llberippingitoutlaterinordertoturnthecoverrightsideout.Withthatinmind,sewataregularstitchlengthforabout5/8”,thenswitchtoyourlongeststitchlength.At5/8”fromtheend,switchbacktoyourregularstitchlengthandcontinueon.Whentheseamissewn,pressitawayfromthecenterpiece,towardstheJournalInside-Rightpiece.

the outer journalWithalloftheinnersectionscomplete,youcannowsewontheoutercoverofthejournal.Layerthepiecestogetherwithrightsidesfacing,andlineupalltherawedges.Thesewentirelyaroundtheperimeterofthejournalcover.Whenyoufinish,trimtheseamallowancestoabout¼”andalsoclipthecornerssotheyturncrisplyinthenextfewsteps.

Toturnthecoverrightsideout,we’regoingtogobackandpickoutthestitchesfromstep10.Ripouttheentireseam(carefully)becausewe’llbeslippingthematboardinthroughthisopeningaswell.Whenyoufinish,turnthecoverrightsideout,pokethecornerswithachopstickorothersimilartooltogetsomegooddefinition,thenpressthewholethingverywellsotheedgesareniceandcrisp.

Nextwe’regoingtostartslidinginourpiecesofmatboard.Startwiththe

onelabeledA,andslideitintotheopeningyou’veripped

opentowardstheleft.Youmighthavetobendtheboardeversoslightlytomakeitin,butthefitshouldbebetteronceyougetitmostoftheway.Itshouldstillbealittlesnugthough,that’sagoodsign:DMakesuretheboardisshovedwaydownintothecornersbeforegoingontothenextstep.

Onceyourfirstboardissnuglyinplace,sewitinplacebysewingaseam

justoutsideoftheboard,goingallthewaydownthe

case.Therearestitchingguide-linesonthepatterntogiveyouanidea,butforthemostpartlettheboardbeyourguide.

Whenyou’vefinishedwiththeseamafterboardA,repeatstep13withboardB–reallyshovingitintheresoitsitssnuglyagainstthelastpreviousboard.Nowsewitinplacejustasyoudidthepreviousboardtoo.Sonowyoushouldhavetwoboardsinplaceandtworowsofstitching.Beforethenextstep,slideboardCinplaceaswell,justlikewiththelast2boards.Getitsoit’sgoodandsnug,butdon’tstitchitinplace.

BeforewestitchboardCinplacewe’llhavetogetthelastboardsinthereaswell.SlideboardEtowardstheright,gettingitgoodandsnug.Thensewitinplacejustasinstep14.
